these bose speakers are wonderful, it has great sound, can get plenty loud, and fis easily on and under desks. Also know that there could be many alternitives that are just as good for 100$ less.
(And incase your wondering, the 2 small speakers arn't wireless)

Wanted smallest PC speakers possible that put out the best sound. Current model of this system has speakers on stands, which we didn't want. Excellent sound, and the desktop volume/mute controller is perfect for someone who is constantly taking phone calls. Highly recommend.

I have to say, that This is the best product out there, for such a reasonable price you get the most clear sound you cannot ever get form any other supplier. Bose definitely is the best quality brand for all systems sound. The speackers are tiny and can be placed anywhere. The volume control system is just great, with one touch you get on-off, and volume using the wheel around it, easy and convenient. The bass is very powerfull. You wont be dissapointed. This is a must have product at home or office. I love it.

I culdn't have made a better buy for this amount of money. As of today I'm stll very satisfied with the great preformance that three speakers can provide. I can't belive that I waited so long to deside on buying this speaker system, which is quite pricy. But then again, Bose is the best way to go for those of us that can afford it. Overall the Companion 3 is a great buy. ---Sweet!!!!!!!!!---

A+ for Customer Service.......2006-11-01

I love the system but it failed six months after my warranty expired. But for $50 Bose fixed the unit and the turnaround was superfast -- I shipped it to them on Monday and received my working unit back on Friday. Fabulous.

If you care about sound, stay away from these........2007-07-01

I am very experienced with music and sound - in fact it's my profession.

I was in the market for the best computer PC speakers for home, and something that looked good in our living room. (Otherwise I would hook up an AMP and some decent small speakers.) Our family was on vacation and I was in a Bose store and noticed them. It's hard to listen critically in that kind of environment, as they were using specially mastered music and nice soundproofing.

The crappy sound they produced on my system was shocking. I have special audio processing software that's used for broadcast radio and even after spending days trying to tweak them to hide the imperfections, I was never able to fix the strange problems.

What was wrong? Let me list the reasons:

1) The midrange was terrible. As another poster commented, "it sounded like they were coming out of a tin can." There was some issue with these speakers in the upper mids which caused a really annoying tone. I couldn't get past this.

2) The low end sounded initially good, but after many hours of critical listening I found that only 60-80k was being generated from the subwoofer. The important low-mid frequency range could not be produced by the subs and the satellites.

3) I could get some good high end, but doing so also increased the problem mid highs which were terrible.

Two weeks were spent with professional audio tweaking software to try to fix the problems in the speakers.

I understand why the looks of these speakers have appeal. They do look modern and sleek and fit the mold of something you would expect in an Bose or Apple store. If you buy speakers for sound, these are not acceptable. Many cheaper speakers on the market including the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 have a much better flat frequency range across the entire spectrum and cost $100 less. The Klipsch produce accurate highs and deep bass. They sound like average "real" speakers.

I returned these speakers to Circuit City and then turned around and went to Best Buy down the street to buy a pair of the Klipsch. I am very happy with these. The Best Buy computer "geek" spent some time with me listening to each system. The only speakers that Bose beat were the $25 Altec set.

If you like them - that's great! I don't want to rain on anyone's parade if you're a Bose fan, but I was really disappointed.

Best PC speakers so far.......2007-06-23

I've had the Companion 3 series II for a while now and I haven't had a problem. The sound is the best I've ever heard from my computer and it lives up to Bose's reputation for sound and quality. Easy to hook up with a user friendly manual. The depth and variety the speakers put out is phenomenal. It's worth the $250 by far. Really a great buy and I would highly recommend it if you're looking to enhance you're music, gaming and videos.

The best I could find..........2007-06-12

These were a bit expensive, but it was the best 2.1 system I could find. A lot of the computer speakers have 10% harmonic distortion, which is obvious when playing music from MP3's or ACC, or CD's. And most won't even play at a decent volume. Logitech and Klipsh where the only 2 speakers that sounded as good as Bose, and then it came down to the compact size of the Bose and my personal listening preference. Anyway, I would like to chalenge the manufacturer's to start making decent speakers. When 80% of the speakers on the shelf have 10% THD and sound bad when playing digital music, you know there is a problem. I can't believe most people accept that level of distortion.

Can't get past the hiss!.......2007-06-12

Was optimistic about these speakers, wowed by the price and the brand. Can't deny the great sound, but was immediately frustrated by the buzzing/hissing/white noise that plays through the speakers regardless if they are plugged into anything. Called Bose, and the service department was completely unhelpful. Exchanged for another set, still the hiss. So I returned them and got Logitech Z-2300... at exactly 1/2 the price, sounds fantastic, and best of all, no hiss!

THEY SOUND GREAT........2007-06-05

I am not an audiophile. Plus, the 1970s were way too loud for me (disco to pick up girls with feathered hair, and the Eagles, Doobies, and Yes for good music). Because of those wonderful(!) memories, I'm starting to lose my hearing. Thus, I don't hear the minute differences in speakers and sound cards and amplifiers anymore. (NEVER GET OLD!!!)
That said, I can honestly tell a difference with this speaker system. The sound seems a little richer, fuller, and more detailed. I hear things through these speakers that I did not hear before (though I have to really crank it). These replace a set of JBL Creatures that blinked out on me week-before-last. They are connected to an Apple iMac running Windows through Boot Camp.
The things I hear are features like the tapping of the saxophone keys on a Spyro Gyra song ("Elegy for Trane"), and the turning of pages on a Ralph Vaughn Williams piece ("The Lark Ascending" - truly the most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard).
Really, I decided to spend the extra money on these because of their construction and my history with Bose. I have a pair of Bose 301s that are probably 25 years old. They are still working quite fine. I hope I can get the same type of longevity and performance out of these that I have gotten out of the 301s.
Kudos to Bose. Whatever magic they do on their speakers sure seems to make a difference.
(By the way, I bought these on something of a whim from a brick-and-mortar store. There was an Apple rep in the store and I felt sorry for him, so I bought these so he could get the credit. Otherwise, I would have bought them from Amazon. I have been very, very happy with all of my dealings with Amazon, and use them every chance I can.)

The sound is strong & clear. The bass are absolutely fantastic, and if you want to improve them just place the subwoofer 5" far in front of wall, it's when you say Wow!. Satellites are very small, nicely designed and you won't ever understand how something so SMALL sounds that BIG. Volume level was lower than I expected, but the guilty guy was my Toshiba laptop's sound card, so I had to upgrade it with a cool pcmcia Creative Audigy 2 ZS. Now, that's sound !

I use these sound system primary to enjoy karaoke music at my parties with family and friends (lot of people!), this is why it was an important point a higher sound level. So I'm really happy with this investment. It's expensive in front of its competitors, right, but as always it is: if you want things to work perfect you have to pay for it!

Great addition to my system........2006-10-07

How much bass do you need?

I have not compared these speakers to others in the price range, but these speakers fill up my study with crisp, clean, satisfying sound I can listen to hour after hour. Bose's sound shaping is very apparent, but the result is pleasing with a full sound field.

I have a more expensive system in the living room with Definitive Technology ProCinema 100's and I don't feel any compulsion to leave the study when I want to crank up Radio Paradise.

System usability is also greatly enhanced with Bose's external volume/mute control.

Build quality also appears to be high. Stick these speakers on a 24" widescreen LCD monitor and you have a very functionaal system.

Note: These speakers are a bit solid for their size. I suggest you buy some industrial strength velcro from Lowes or elsewhere if you plan to use Bose's inccluded L-mounts to attach these to the top of your monitor. 2"x.75" ought to do it,

Nice sound but...........2006-09-23

....the quality is somewhat questionable. After owning these fine sounding speakers for a little over a year, they quit working. You would think that for this much money, that they would last a little bit longer. And, of course, they are only guaranteed for one year. So buyer beware.

Room-filling sound at a hefty price.......2006-08-16

I'm not going to lie: these speakers are among the most expensive computer speakers on the market. If money isn't an issue, however, I would highly recommend them.
The bass is tight and controlled, and the highs are clean and crisp. I'm a big classical music fan and when I listen to denseley layered music such as Brahms' Symphonies the inidivdual parts are clearly distinguishable and the sound is rich and full. Also, watching movies on my computer hasn't been the same since I purchased the Companion 3's: they are sublte when they need to be but when the film calls for big sound, they really deliver. I often find myself in movie theaters thinking that my speakers could rival the intensity of the theater's.

I have no problem whatsoever with the quality of the sound, but the high price may discourage you. There is simply no need for it to be over $100 more expensive than speaker sets with comparable sound. The price bugs me, but since this is a review of the product itself, I have to give it 5 stars.

Crisp, clear and expensive.......2006-08-09

Few things about Bose

- crystal clear sound
- good base
- clarity to the limit of hearing all intruments descretely with lot of details.
- terrific clarity and effects even in low volume
- simplicity for install and use
- and expensive (hence the 4 stars and not 5)

Bose also gives you rubberfeet to put the front speakers on your sensitive wood table to avoid any scratches along with the option to mount it on your LCD Flat panel grips.

I am using Creative Audigy 2 Platinum sound card and Bose had been a great experience as they both are legends of sound industry as in an marriage made in heaven.

I highly recomend the Bose system for those who are challenged for space on their computer tables but want a great sound in addition to manual quick control of sound next to speakers with visual LED and one additional device hook-up jack for something like an ipod. For others who want true surround sound with 5.1 speakers logitech 5450 with rear wireless speakers is always a choice which primarily costs almost the same.

One piece of advice: upgrade your sound card to minimum creative audigy level and keep your bose on clean protected power as in same power care for your computer - this will get you max value for your $money$ :-).

PS: one more "suggestion": when you convert/RIP your CD's to MP3's look for the following settings under preferences/options of your software
Bit Rate: 192 Kbps
Sample Rate: 44.1KHz
and if possible use 24 bit
This will be a negligible overhead on space (~1MB per song) but you will feel the difference.
