Just as a keyboard needs a mouse and peanut butter needs jelly, a home theater system needs a subwoofer. KLH realized this when it designed the HTA- 9006, an affordable six-piece home theater speaker package which can purr as well as roar.

A powered subwoofer anchors the HTA-9006. Its down-firing 8-inch driver kicks with lightning-like speed and garners terrific visceral impact from a muscular 100-watt amplifier. The cabinet is ported to increase sensitivity and frequency extension, yet it's still small enough for you to tuck into a corner or under an end table.

But we're most impressed by the subwoofer features we usually only see on far costlier models: a crossover that's continuously variable from 50 to 150 Hz (letting you adjust the upper end of the sub's range); a 0-to-180-degree phase switch (which can compensate for distances between your sub and your front speakers); a continuously variable volume control (essential for easy fine tuning); an auto on/off sensor (you never have to think about turning it on or off), and speaker-level as well as line-level inputs (granting flexible setup options.

Four identical two-way satellite speakers handle front- and rear-channel duties. Each small black cabinet features a 4-inch fiber-cone woofer and a 0.63-inch tweeter. The horizontal center channel employs exactly the same drivers, but here twin woofers are placed to the outside of the tweeter for a little extra body (most film sound comes from the center channel). Duplicating the drivers for all- around timbre matching is one of the keys to superior surround sound--again, kudos to KLH.

The center channel does a great job of fixing dialogue at the screen and blends beautifully with the front and surround speakers to create a surprisingly expansive and three-dimensional soundscape.

With stereo CDs as well as 5.1-channel DVDs, this system's midrange is articulate and natural. It may not be as detailed as the very best and it does have a touch of box coloration, but that's acceptable in this price range. What's really important is overall balance, and in that regard this system excels.

And that subwoofer works like a champ! It's never obvious or heavy-handed but, when called upon, it delivers the explosive thrills that make home theater so much fun.

Got the picture? KLH's HTA-9006 is one heck of a good little home theater package and a truly great value. --Wayne Garcia

3 out of 5 stars Almost Worth the Money, Certainly not a Penny More.......2001-09-02

I got a $200.00 gift certificate to spend at Amazon.com and needed surround sound speakers, so I bought by price... Now I wasn't expecting Bose quality here, and my expectations were not exceeded. For the money I got a great subwoofer and decent center channel, but the four satellite speakers were pretty weak on sound quality... about the same as having four clock radios around the room. So, my advice? Save up a little more and buy at least the next grade up.

4 out of 5 stars Great value.......2001-06-14

Only problem I have encountered is the subwoofer making the metal on top of my receiver rattle!! That really gets annoying, but I'll simply move the receiver elsewhere. These are a great value, and offer good imaging if placed correctly.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, excellent value!!.......2001-03-21

For the price of this set, you absolutely cannot go wrong. I have this set hooked up to my Kenwood VR-305 receiver, and I cannot believe how good these sound. I have been using surround sound for about 6-7 years now, and this complete set matches, in fact surpasses in a lot of ways, my prior speakers which a mix of Infinity and Sony. I used to have 2 large front speakers w/12 inch woofers that combined did not put out as much clean bass and overall clarity as these KLH's do. The subwoofer has all the adjustments you could need to get it soudning good, and the satellites do a splendid job in reproducing the high and mid ranges. You do have to fiddle around to get the right balance between the speakers and the sub, but once you do, you will be sincerely impressed. The center channel matches the quality of my Infinity center channel (I paid 150 for that one alone). If you are an audiophile you probably could find some faults with it, but for the music and movie lover like me who likes good, rich, clean sound, I dont see why you would spend more on another set...unless of course you could afford or would be willing to spend hundreds upon hundreds of dollars for speakers (I cant, and even if i could, i wouldnt!). The only reason I dont give this set 5 stars is because the "auto" power on the sub (which is supposed to kick the sub on when audio is detected) is not very sensitive, and the power sometimes shuts off at lower volume levels. So for low levels you just have to leave the sub on and take the little extra effort to turn the sub off when you're done using it. Otherwise, I would not hesitate to recommend this set anyone. Its probably the best value on a speaker package you'll get for this price.

4 out of 5 stars Same as HTA-9005 + PSW-8100.......2000-11-28

I have KLH HTA-9005 and PSW-8100, which are the exact components in this system, however cost less :) I am pretty happy with my system. It sounds great! Two small points though: Satellites could use some more highs and sub makes some humming in low volumes.
