The DVD drive plays DVD, DVD+RW, and VCDs, in addition to MP3 and JPEG image CDs. With a mixed-mode CD, you can even select a treasured JPEG image to serve as the backdrop to your MP3 listening. Video features include picture zoom, multi-angle viewing, and parental lock. The system's 85-watts-per-channel receiver delivers a total of 500 watts, and the system's Class D amplifier was designed with special attention to the extreme dynamics possible in DVD movie presentations.

The MX3900D's four two-way satellite speakers and center-channel speaker are acoustically designed to match the tonal characteristics of the receiver. Front left, right, and center speakers are magnetically shielded to prevent any interference with your TV's image. The sixth speaker is a passive subwoofer with twin-port bass tubes that enhance the speaker's delivery by letting it move more air at carefully tuned frequencies. The tuner offers 40 FM/AM presets.

The receiver features two analog-audio inputs and one analog-audio output, along with a digital-audio input and output (both coaxial). Three video outputs (including the primary monitor output) accommodate a range of televisions, from sets with standard composite-video terminals to sets offering high-resolution component-video inputs.

crap.......2004-08-15

Worked ok for 2 1/2 months then...nothing. no seperate ff/rw button, too few inputs...very few outputs...poor rear speaker volume...disappointing! open and closing drawers problematic. I have a 15 year-old JVC 4.0 that works fine....this p.o.s. went back to the factory.

Its looks pretty good given its specifications.

My major complaint about this system is, I could hardly heard from the Back speakers and hence missing Surround sound effects of Dolby Digital.

And then little inconviniences are,
1. No direct "Fast Forward (>>) / Backward ( < <) feature. We need to select System Menu and go to the submenus to forward.
2. The IR sensor is bottom of the unit at an angle facing down, and had trouble opertaing the remote when the unit is placed in Entertainment center.
3. The disc selection is slow.

Nice, but there's better........2004-07-03

I know I probabaly shouldn't expect so much for the good deal that I got, but the MX3900D was a major disappointment.

I have had problems since day one with the sound levels while playing DVD's. When I have the radio turned on I can keep the level at about a 5 or a 6 and hear it through my whole house. For a DVD I have to turn the level to 25 or 30 to barely hear common conversations. It is also really irratating that when I put a new DVD in the changer and then select that tray that the DVD doesn't automatically start playing. Isn't that the point of the DVD menu that movie companies put on the disc?? I even went so far as calling Philips to find out about the problems and was told that these are known issues and can't be fixed.

Sorry, but I want a system that I don't have to crank all the the way so that I can hear my movie. This one went back to the store.

Everything I could have hoped for!.......2004-06-30

I received this as a Father's Day gift. My five year old son and I had it up and running in less than an hour. It needed no additional cables and we were blown away by how good it sounded. Keep in mind this is my first venture into a home theater system. I could not see spending a mortgage payment on a system with a 5 and 2 year old that would put something through a subwoofer or something.

The sound is great. Set up is easy and the price is fantastic!

Great Sound, Great Price.......2004-03-31

I bought a factory reconditioned 3950 from Overstock.com, and couldn't be happier with it. This system has some really nice features like sound that can be easily adjusted with the remote depending on where you are sitting in the room. It also has a voice enhancer feature that can be turned off/ on with the remote as well.
The sound is great for HTIB. The bass is tight, and dialogue is clear no matter what movie is playing. Considering I paid less than $200 for this system, I really don't see how the sound could be that much better in a HTIB that costs 5-10 times as much, which I saw when I was looking.
In addition to the great sound, this is a nice looking system, also. Philips is one of the few electronics companies that understands that exterior design is almost as important as sound quality.
Another reviewer mentioned the flimsy disc trays, this is true. They are very flimsy - I don't think it would take much to damage one, then you are SOL. But overall, I would definitely recommend this system to anyone who can't justify spending tons of money on a home theater setup.
