In years past, if you wanted to watch special-effects extravaganzas in all their glory, you had little choice but to hit the local multiplex. Now, with products such as the HT-6600DP home theater in a box, your living room can host cinema-quality sound that puts all but the most modern theaters to shame. This 700-watt system (120 watts x 5, plus a 100-watt powered subwoofer) delivers exploding sound from its five-disc DVD changer and Dolby Digital-, DTS-, and Dolby Pro-Logic II-compatible receiver. The unit features Precision Cinema Progressive Output technology, which processes image changes at the pixel level to better reproduce the source material, and Precision Drive 2 with Dynamic Tilt Compensation for more accurate playback. In addition to playing DVDs, the system handles CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+RW, and MP3 formats, and offers 20 FM and 10 AM station presets on its built-in tuner.
Like many other home theater systems, this HT-6600DP is loaded with extras that enhance the home viewing experience, not the least of which is the 32-bit Digital Signal Processing for superior audio performance. Other convenient features include a twin laser pickup, instant replay, block noise reduction, virtual surround, SmoothScan and SmoothSlow modes, CD and DVD text, and custom parental control. Graphic images and audio files are enhanced by the 12-bit video digital-to-analog conversion (with 108 MHz processing) and the 96 KHz, 24-bit linear PCM decoding.
Another benefit of home-theater-in-a-box systems is the convenience aspect, as the bundles include not only receivers and DVD players, but also a set of surround-ready speakers. Included in the HT-6600DP are a slim center speaker, four satellite speakers, and a 100-watt powered subwoofer with an 8-inch driver. The speakers are magnetically shielded so as not to interfere with the TV picture.
The system is compatible with a host of other components, with three analog audio inputs, one analog audio output, three optical digital inputs, a coaxial digital input, and an optical digital output. The A/V inputs are composite and S-Video type, as are the A/V outputs. The system also includes two component video inputs and one output, plus a monitor video output, A+B speaker terminals, and a 1/4-inch headphone jack. The entire system comes in silver and is powered by a UniCommander remote control. The device carries a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
