This JBL 400-watt, 12-inch powered subwoofer reproduces sound with incredible power, delivering the punch that puts the "cinema" in home-cinema system. The custom-designed MDF enclosure provides unparalleled spaciousness and definition, while the PolyPlas polymer-coated cellulose fiber cone woofer features traditional JBL engineering--the same technologies used in JBL's professional audio equipment found in stadiums, music halls, and movie theaters around the world. Meanwhile, a high-temperature, oversized, state-of-the-art fiberglass voice coil and HeatScape motor structure let this subwoofer effortlessly and endlessly play all types of movies and music.

The woofer is built on a cast-aluminum frame, which reduces distortion and increases power-handling capability. A low-diffraction IsoPower baffle directs the sound into the room, reducing the distortion often caused by cabinet vibration. In addition, the lock-mitered, computer-designed enclosure requires no bracing, while the FreeFlow flared port increases bass response without adding unwanted port noise. And to top it off, the high-performance, high-efficiency, high-output amplifier produces an incredible, room-filling 400 watts of bass power--enough to satisfy even the most demanding bass enthusiasts. And to ensure the cleanest possible signal, all Studio series loudspeakers are equipped with all-metal, five-way, gold-plated binding post speaker terminals.

Specifications include a 22 to 150 Hz frequency response and a continuously variable crossover from 50 to 150 Hz. The sub measures 16.19 by 17.19 by 18 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a five-year warranty on parts and labor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This Sub Delivers for Movies and Music.......2007-06-16

I could not be happier with the quality and sound of this sub for the price. For a hardcore audiophile like myself I wanted smooth, tight, accurate bass with a wide frequency range that was solid from down to at least 25Hz up to 100Hz.

There is no distortion, frequency loss, bottoming out or muddiness with this woofer. The ported enclosure is solid and the speaker well made. I didn't realize how big or heavy this thing was until it arrived in my living room and I had to take it out of the box. Based on the weight and make of this unit I could already tell it was going to be a strong performer, and no matter the format (movies/music) this sub delivers with beautiful clarity.

The power is adequate, but the clarity is what I love about this sub. I thought 400 watts would be a bit much for a subwoofer in my home, but now I realize I made the right decision. Higher powered subs like this allow for loud play with lower distortion and increased performance because the amp isn't working as hard, and since the sub is rated for higher power as well there will be less distortion at high volumes. It's the right investment at the right price. I have this paired with the cinema series JBL surround speakers and the balance is just right.

5 out of 5 stars JBL S120P II 12" 400-Watt Powered Subwoofer .......2007-05-14

Excellent, one of the best purchases that have made. Incredible effect. I wanted to buy other more.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks to the other reviewers!.......2007-03-08

I read the reviews and decided to upgrade my old subwoofer to this one espcecially with it being a such a great deal. It was delivered very quickly and I decided to take the advice from the reviews and buy a LFE cable. I compared before and after using a subwoofer cable and then the LFE cable - definitely made a difference with my Denon.

Tested it using the scene from Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring where Gandalf confronts the Balrog. My old subwoofer whimpered and clipped during this scene - the new one blew me away. You could almost feel the hot breath coming from the beast.

I want to say thanks to the other reviewers and defintely throw my recommendation in as well - it's a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing quality for price.......2007-02-09

This beautiful and exquisit addition to any AV system is well worth the effort. Delievering 400 watts of pure, unsolicited bass which will, literally, stand the hair on your neck. This unit is actually very fashionable so that you do not have to 'hide' it somewhere in your room. I actually have mine behind my Ent.Center, which is just beacuse it fits like a glove. The bass reponse is greatly controlled and utilized by the controls on the unit; however, make sure you get good bass cable(s) to hook up to it. Something of this magnitude definately requires that the user not use the $5 cables that places sell. If you are going to buy this unit, show it off in the best way it can be shown off. The chase scene in 'Batman Begins' is AWESOME! 5 of 5 on this unit.

5 out of 5 stars Very impressive sub for $300.......2007-01-27

I recently purchased this JBL sub through Amazon. I had set high expectations based on my research over the last few years (evaluating Martin Logan/Definitive/Klipsch..etc). I am in process of setting up my second surround system for a recently finished basement. My first system includes a KSW-10 sub which I purchased a few years ago as a starter. I have been pleased with the KSW, but I knew the limitations of a 10" Klipsch sub. As I am now in the break-in period of the JBL, I must say that it is quite impressive. I compared the two side by side (w/music and movies) and experienced a spectrum of sound that I have been missing all these years. The JBL rids the classic "boomy" sound that is quite irritating and noticable with the KSW. It produces a very tight/compacted full sound, which is what I have been looking for. The sub demonstrates a very high level of power with no distortion. However, I have noticed the very low humming sound (with volume at 0), that has been mentioned in multiple reviews, but it not noticable unless the room is completely silent. As far as aestetics, aside from the goofy silver plate on top, it's your classic black wooden box, but I think it is filled with sand...cause it's heavy!

In my opinion based on all my comparisons, I would conclude that this is the best sub <$600 that I have heard.

Finally, I would recommend like other reviewers to use a good LFE/Sub cable, because it does make a difference.
