Customer Reviews:
Subwoofer.......2007-06-27
Great sound, I have had it for 1 year and love the bass produced by this speaker.
I would purchase another one if I needed an additional unit.
Nice sub.......2006-11-03
The E250 is the right sub if you are looking for a very good balance in price/performance. It will not wake up all the neighborhood but outputs power enough to have a satisfactory experience in home theater applications. I like that it automatically switches to stanby mode if no signal is detected after some minutes.
Decent performer for the price.......2006-07-17
Quick summary of the following review: the JBL e250p 12in powered subwoofer is a decent performer if you can get it at a hundred or more dollars below the MSRP and if you have JBL towers/center channel to match it with. There are, however, much better subs for only a little more money out there.
I have been using the JBL e250p matched with JBL e80 towers and a c25 center channel, with older RCA surrounds, using a fairly old RCA A/V receiver, for about two months. The room I have been using is pretty good sonically, and the sub sits in one corner that I've determined produces the best bass response. I've set up the system using a spl meter and AVIA's home theater calibration DVD.
The sub matches up with the other JBL speakers well. I would say that for home theater applications (eg movies) the e80 towers absolutely need the sub--they cannot produce the necessary bass on their own. I have not been able to make the sub completely "transparent," however; you can still notice when it is doing it's thing, unlike some higher end subs that disappear and mingle perfectly with towers/center channels.
This sub works best for 5.1 movies. Although a little boomy and not as tight as I would like, it still produces satisfying bass and rumbles nicely on films like Saving Private Ryan. It is not terribly detailed, and that nice rumbling can quickly turn overpowering and loose all focus and detail if you turn the volume up too much on the receiver or on the sub itself. Interestingly, I did learn that the correct phase setting for me in my room was at the 180 position, so that is certainly worth trying--getting the phase right can produce cleaner bass response with the tower speakers.
For music this sub is a little less able a performer. The 12in driver takes a little time to recover as it pounds away, so it can get somewhat muddy on faster beats. Still, listening to Tool's new 10,000 Days it did a perfectly reasonable job given it's price point.
Using the AVIA LFE sweep and a spl meter, I determined that the sub's published frequency response ratings are technically correct--it reaches down to 25hz, but only barely. At 40hz the decibels start to drop off dramatically; 30hz barely registered, and at 25hz it is essentially gone, with nothing at all from 20-25hz. So, if you are looking for that kick-in-the-chest 18 or even 16hz, look elsewhere (try an SVS sub, for example).
I have to say there are better subs out there, and getting a good subwoofer can be worth a little extra money. This system is not actually mine, but my father's, and I recently purchased an Onix Rocket UFW-10. I briefly hooked it up in place of the JBL e250p and the Rocket produced a major difference, even though the UFW-10 is a 10in enclosed sub. The bass response was noticably tighter and cleaner, something I could notice especially in music and in gunshots in movies. However, the UFW-10, unless you find it on sale as I did, is considerably more expensive than the JBL. A more affordable, super tight, "musical" sub could probably be found through HSU Research. Their 10in subs only reach down to 25hz as well, but they are reportedly very tight, clean, and flat in their frequency response.
Overall, for the price, and matched with other JBL speakers, this is a decent sub and should satisfy non-audiophile listeners and those unconcerned with having the absolute best. I have experienced the sub get overly rumbly and lose focus on fast, deep bass, and it bottoms out quickly below 30hz, but it still does it's job, especially for movies.
Trash -- buy the longest extra warranty available.......2006-05-05
Just search the 'net for reviews. Purchased the first one from an online vendor and it arrived DOA. Glad they honored the warranty, and the second unit arrived about 2 weeks after the first was returned. AWESOME deep bass for movies (especially U571 and the depth charge blasts). Rattled the glasses on our bar. Then, about 14 months later, is began to squeak and squawk eeeeeeeeeeeooooooouuuuuwwwwwweeeeeeeee sounds, louder than one can bear to hear. Warranty period was over.
For about 6 months, you could unplug the unit (min 3 or 4 days down time) and then get a movie or two played before the noise would start again. That got old really fast and it did not always work.
Gave up and purchase a Sony SA-WX700 subwoofer about 6 months ago and was initially very disappointed with it's output. However, that opinion was totally bogus -- guess that subwoofers have to go through a bit of a break-in period? After about three or four movies, it really rocked the house and we are loving the Sony.
Used with a Yamaha HTR 5280 amp and a Northridge 7 speaker surround system (center, 2 surround fronts, 2 surround rears, and two standing ND310s), the Sony kicks
Great Sub, Great Price.......2006-03-23
I have this sub paired with JBL E30 satelites, JBL E C35 center, JBL E N24WII for surrounds and a Yamaha RX-V767 AV receiver/amp.
This sub is the star of my new HT/stereo setup. I use this system in my main family/great room for music 60% of the time and surround system for movies 40%, and this sub does great for both. This speaker has great lows (real low) for movies etc, it will engualf the room with bass, and it has great, tight bass - punch for music. I listen to everything from Sade & Rick Braun to Korn & Tool and this speaker does great at whatever it is asked to do. I think the front firing configuration on this sub is more accurate and predictable than the typical down firing subs.
Bottom line - if you have the space for this (it is big, the only possible negative about it) buy this subwoofer you will not be dissapointed!
