AudioSource SW Fifteen 200-Watt Powered Subwoofer

Product Description
Amazon.com Review
The AudioSource SW Fifteen pounds out 200 watts of low-end power, bringing high-impact slam to action DVDs and greater ambient detail and instrumental heft to your favorite music.

A variable low-pass filter (LPF) lets you tailor the sub's output to your existing speakers. By setting the LPF high (toward 180 Hz), you can fill in the bass for bookshelf speakers that may have little bass output. If you use a lower setting (toward 40 Hz), the sub supplements and perceptually deepens the output from larger, floorstanding speakers.

You get more than just the basics here: the SW Fifteen comes with a phase-invert switch for placement flexibility (to help align the crests and dips of the different sound waves when the SW Fifteen and your main speakers are in different places) and auto-on signal sensing for power conservation.

You can hook up the SW Fifteen in one of two ways. In the first case, you can feed the sub one or two RCA-tipped line-level signals from your preamplifier or surround receiver. (The sub has two inputs, but many receivers offer only one subwoofer output, which is fine.) Using this method, your receiver can most effectively route the LFE (low-frequency effects) channel from Dolby Digital or DTS surround programs directly to your subwoofer. The SW Fifteen offers two RCA outputs (really just throughputs) in case you want to send the signal along to a second subwoofer or power amplifier.

Alternately, you can run speaker cable from your receiver to the SW Fifteen and then from the sub's outputs to your front-left and -right speakers. This results in a more seamless transition from the subwoofer to your speakers, as the signal arriving at your speakers has already been filtered through the SW Fifteen's internal crossover (the variable LPF discussed above). If you plan to listen to stereo music with your subwoofer, this might be the way to go.

Our biggest gripe with the SW Fifteen is that it offers clip-type speaker terminals rather than banana-type (five-way binding posts). It still sounds good, but just be sure you have pin-tipped cables or bare-wire tips if you intend to use the speaker-cable hook-up method.

The SW Fifteen has one feature that few subwoofers at any price offer: a variable-crossover knob that clicks when turned, allowing greater precision in selecting points between 40 and 180 Hz (the 80 and 120 Hz points are marked).

The SW Fifteen does an excellent job with power handling. There's plenty of reserve here, and the bass itself plows quite deep. What the sub gains in depth and power, however, it loses in definition--fans of taut, punchy bass might want to look elsewhere (but be prepared to sacrifice some of the ultradeep tones if you stay at this price.

With careful placement and painstaking adjustment of both the level and the crossover frequency, the SW Fifteen can be quite pleasing, though, especially when it's supplementing nearly full-range speakers with extra body and low-end solidity. --Michael Mikesell

4 out of 5 stars Subwoofer DEAL!!.......2007-02-19

I can't imagine what some of these people are doing with this product?
This is a $199.00 15" subwoofer. If you have some nice bookshelf speakers and want something that will put out much more than reasonable low end response, it's great. No, it's not an Aerial $5,000.00 product, but, darn, it's does a nice job. I have found mine to be much more than just satisfactory. I don't play rap music at 200db, which is why I probably have not had any problems. I love the fact it has a 15" driver and a nice large ported cabinet. It really gets the low register on the music scale, and it is warranted for not one or two or three, but for FIVE long years. Mine has not blown one single fuse, it has the auto turn on/off feature, when it receives a signal, so I never have to worry about turning it off, and I say buy one, if you can find one. I did add some nice air conditioning insulation in mine, smoothed things out nicely. I am using this with Legacy Studio loudspeakers, which are just nice little bookshelf speakers, and boy does it cut the mustard on adding that bottom end, GREAT GREAT addition. How does anyone not have a subwoofer these days, I have them on every system I own! Oh, I do have the Aerial subwoofer, but then it's used with Aerial loudspeakers and Jeff Rowland equipment, big difference, but for a small to medium system, the AudioSource is the ticket, oh yes!

At above reasonable volume levels it does a very good job. I have one thought on this blowing fuse issue, some buyers must indeed be using this at extremely high volumes, and therefore the amp is getting hot and blowing fuses. I have had mine very loud, and never blow anything, but most of my listening has been at normal listening levels, where the low end is tight and controlled, and I don't push a $200.00 designed driver and amplifier into a $2,000.00 subwoofer range.

Some common sense here would go a long way.

Sounded great for a short while. Fuses keep blowing so something is very wrong. Hoping Amazon takes care of this one ... we'll see. Depressing to have something that should work yet won't ... I never cranked it up or drove it hard.

Stay away from Audiosource.

UPDATE: they sent a new amp section --- easy to install and has been superb since then. Now 4 and 1/2 stars. It's been fine for two years plus now! Excellent customer service too!

1 out of 5 stars Two have blown.......2003-11-02

My first one lasted less than a month. Blew it's fuse and when I replaced the fuse, it just made a loud hum. The amp was blown. I have an HK510 AVR with sub-out, so I know I didn't give it too much juice. I was skeptical to get another one, but decided to try in hopes I just got a lemon. Amazon was great and paid for shipping both ways. The second one lasted a few months and then the exact same thing. I sent an email on Sunday to thier customer support and got both an email and phone call from them on Monday. They told me they are aware of the problem and have a fix. They are having me just send the amp, so I don't have to pack up and send this beast. Good customer support so far.

4 out of 5 stars About this subwoofer.........2003-09-13

I bought this subwoofer about 2 years ago from Amazon.com and I was pleased the day it came. It is placed in a room that has cement walls and a cement floor, and it still delivers bass you can hear and feel. I run it with a 500 watt surround sound reciever, and it is used with large speakers.
I haven't had any problems with the subwoofer thus far. Some of the other reviews list the amp getting hot fast at high sound levels, and after a few hours at loud volumes, yes, the amp will get hot. Shutting it down for a few minutes, though, will cool it, and prevent any damage due to overheating. As far as performance, this subwoofer can handle relatively high volumes without distortion. Basically, for the price and sound quality, it is a good buy for anyone interested in adding the low-end sound to their system.

1 out of 5 stars Unsatisfactory.......2003-04-15

After 3 months, 2 drivers, 2 amplifiers and $...to ship the parts back twice, we are still dead in the water. I should have stopped the bleeding within the initial 30 days and sent it back to Amazon. The unit instead will be going into the trash can. In retrospect, I should have researched further and found out this was a discontinued item, and that Audiosource does not have replacement parts.
