5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Gem.......2006-12-11

Powderfinger is a huge hit in their native Australia, and I can't see why they never caught on in the states. All the songs on this, their best, album manage to be very melody-driven (especially the catchy "My Happiness" and "The Metre") while utilizing some pretty rocking guitars ("Like a Dog" and "Thrilloilogy") and being lyrically sophisticated (From "Like a Dog": "Now he nervously sits as he rattles his cage/But he's happy to be stuck back in his halcyon days/Now we're trying hard to reconcile a history of shame/But he reinforced the barriers that keep us the same"). I would classify all the songs on this album as very sensitive, but make no mistake, Powderfinger knows how to rock. A cohesive album, no pitfall songs.

This album holds particular emotional weight for me because it was lent to me by a girl who I had pretty strong feelings for, but we had grown distant. She lent me the CD so as to assure that we'd see each other again, but we never did. Chrissy Gill, if you're out there, I have your CD and I'd love to see you.

5 out of 5 stars OdysseyNumberFive .......2006-04-26

Odyssey Number Five isn't a 5 star album it's a 6 star album!!!!
If you've got the album you would understand why.

Powderfinger is my favourite band ever!!!! I've got all their albums counting the live one and the best of. And on my birthday this year I got the Tranfusion EP from their early days in 1993. If you like hard rock you should try to find it.

At the start of this review I said it's a 6 star album. This album isn't even their best!! (Double Allergic is a bit better)

Alot of you people propbably never heard of Powderfinger so I'm going to show you

Bernard Fanning - Vocals, Guitar, Harmonica, Keyboards
Darren Middleton - Guitar, Backing Vocals, Keyboards
Ian Haug - Guitar, Backing Vocals
John Collins - Bass
Jon Coghill - Drums

I think I have to to get on to the review.

Waiting for the Sun - Great opener and 4th single off the album(5/5) (3:52)

My Happiness - Worst on the album 1st single off the album (3.5/5) (4:36)

The Metre - Nice track and last single off the the album. They hardly ever play this one live!! (4.5/5) (4:33)

Like a Dog - 3rd single off the album and one off the best!!! (4:20) (5/5)

Odyssey Number Five - I love the drums on this one but it's way too short (5/5) (1:46)

Up and Down and Back Again - Why wasn't this on fingerprints??? This song is one of the best off the album that means it should have been up there. 2nd best song on the album!!!!!!!! (5000000000000/5) (4:23)

My Kind of Scene - Most of you problaby have heard this one before (It was on Misson Impossible 2 Movie)2nd single of the album
This song has heaps of names
My Kind of Scene
My Kinda Scene
Not My Kinda Scene
My KInd of Scene (Oh Yeah)
(Not) My Kind of Scene (Oh Yeah)
And they're all the same song!!!(5/5) (4:37)

These Days - Just a re recording of the oringnal, but still great but still great. Most of you problaby heard this one too because the oringnal was in a movie (5/5) (4:59)
We Should Be Together Now - 2nd worst, but that doesn't mean it's bad!!! (4.5/5) (3:45)

Thrilloilogy - Powderfinger's 3rd best song ever!!!!!!!!! And best song on this album !!!!!!!!!!!!(500000000000000000000/5) (6:10)

Whatever Makes You Happy - This song is a very sad ballad about one member of the bands mum died. Very very very very very sad ending to this album (2:29) (5/5)

If you like rock you must get this album

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, (the Negatives Don't Get It).......2006-03-06

This CD is a superb example of rock that doesn't need heavy distortion, thrashing and screaming. It's, well-- truly MUSIC. Something confident musicians can create who don't need to prove how tough they are. The thoughtful lyrics, and the flush spacious arrangements make this a great "car album" that you can just leave on play, and explore every track. I would also add that it captures a "live sound" very well. This one became an instant favorite for me, and should be as well for anyone with an open mind.

5 out of 5 stars What were the negative reviewers smoking?.......2004-12-24

Personally, I believe that Powderfinger is one of the best Australian bands out there. It is one of the albums in my collection that I can start up and listen from the first song to the last. Do not listen to any negative reviewers - 'Odyssey #5' has more than enough redeeming features to make any Powderfinger fan happy.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Stuff.......2004-03-07

Due to the fact that Australia is isolated form the rest of the world, we tend to be much more Alternative. Think Alternative is to Australia as what R&B is to America. This means that if you want hard Iron Maiden...go somewhere else but this album i found was quite deep and Bernard Fanning's voice is a lot more melodic than your average rock band's giving The Finger a much more individual sound. Personally I think that Powderfinger wouldn't be where they are now without Bernard's vocals.

4 out of 5 stars These guys rock.......2003-01-10

As a new listener I love this album. I have since hearing this , gone in sarch of all things PF. Finding the common older releases is easy but keep an eye out for the more obscure tracks and releases from the early days.

5 out of 5 stars Powderfingers best album.......2001-06-26

Odessey Number Five is the most recent album by the Australian Band, Powderfinger. Lead singer, Bernard Fanning's unusual voice cuts through the melodic guitar and is a nice change from the mass produced voices so common on today's radio. Clean, sharp, soulful and fresh.
