5 out of 5 stars Positive Education Always Corrects Error.......2001-01-04

Allright, i'll have to admit to being a wee bit biased on this one. In my opinion, Slam are the business. Their Soma record label is one of the most innovative and consistently excellent on the scene, their work as Slam, Pressure Funk and Counter Plan never fails to impress, and their '94 classic 'Positive Education' remains arguably one of the best techno records of all time.

I've been hoping for a Slam mix to come out since my first mindblowing night at the arches ... so when I recently found a copy, it was with shedloads of anticipation that I breathlessly crammed it into my CD player..

As with most DJ mix formats these days, the package is spread out over two CDs, which leads you to expect (and later get) a chilled out set on one, and a more floor-friendly and lively set on the other. The cover art is also pretty indicative of the genre - the warm colours, the angular and retro-futuristic architecture of the motorway overpass and the implicit journey theme give cues of what is to come. Looks pretty cool as well.

Flipping it over, the tracklisting looks promisingly creative and original, containing remixes of old school classics like the anthemic Sueno Latino and Chez Damier's 'Close' with the today's hottest tracks like Bushwacka's monstrous 'Healer'. We also get to hear a lot of excellent grooves from some new British up-and-comers. The most obvious tracks are new mixes of Positive Education (forgiven!) and Jaguar (ditto!). They still rock!

The technical quality of the mixing is excellent if that is the sort of thing that interests you. Slam are true veterans, having been a part of the formation of the Scottish scene back in '88, achieving legendary status during their residency at the Atlantis nights at the sub. Today they continue to hold their own with the best of them on the international DJ circuit as well as at home with their wild boat parties and club nights.

However, the best thing about these mixes is the track selection and programming - imaginatively fusing underground house and techno in the deep and funky Soma style. Wambonix blends into E-Dancer in a way that sounds not only totally natural but positively lovely, and the momentum continues to build into a crecendo that only real DJ's know how to create - if you let the music take you, you can almost taste the vibe - you're instantly teleported beneath central station with a couple hundred nutty Glaswegians!

You can tell that Slam are still passionate about the music, and with a second album on the way you can't help but feel the best is yet to come. This particular CD rates up there with Subculture, Decks FX & 909 and Stacey Pullen's DJ Kicks in the kick-arse mix stakes, and it comes thoroughly recommended to the faithful and potential converts alike.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet "Sisters Of Mercy".......2003-01-31

This is an update to the previous review I wrote since I now own the Vagabonds, Kings, Warriors, Angels box set. The version of Sisters Of Mercy on the box set is indeed the one with all vocals and the sound quality is superior to the version in this set. This song alone should've broke the band out as it is simply awesome! I also noticed that released in January 2003 is the Grand Slam Live recordings from Mark Stanway but as of yet, I haven't heard anything from it so I can't comment on the sound quality. If I hear anything about it I'll post a review for it. Rock On!

    4 out of 5 stars What could've been..........2002-10-30

Listening to this set is bittersweet. The songs here are just as good as anything latter day Thin Lizzy did. You can hear the caliber of talent this band had and the fact they were never signed is definitely an injustice. However, because this was culled from private tape archives, sound quality on some tracks leaves a lot to be desired. Not sure what happened to the master reels or if they ever were any, but after listening to this, I ache to hear what could've been done using masters with today's technology. The band must've been awesome live as well. In the liner notes, it appears Mark Stanway is working on a live compilation as well. Hopefully the sound quality will be better on that one. Not sure how these versions of Sisters of Mercy compare with the Thin Lizzy box set since I don't own that yet. The alternate take is better sound wise, but is mainly instrumental through the entire song instead of continuing with vocals after the intro. Wish I could hear a cleaned up version including all the vocals. If you can tolerate the sound quality issues, this set is a must own for any Phil Lynott fan. Unfortunately, it wasn't too long after these recordings that he left this world. What a tremendous loss to the world of good music. Phil will continue to live through the music he and his fellow musicians made. Cheers!
