Product Description
During the "1001 Degrés Centigrades" period, MAGMA was stuggling to find a wider audience. This was mainly due to the fact that the French band played such an innovative music and used its own language, usually known under the name Kobaian. So, drummer extraordinaire Christian VANDER and his teammates decided to hide behind a different name and write texts in English. Not too long in fact, as the second side of the only opus recorded have been deisgned to lead the listener to discover musical landscapes not so far away from Zeuhl. "Ündia" even sees the comeback of Kobaian... Unfortunately, the UNIVERIA ZEKT exeperience didn't last long, and MAGMA went back to its own concept shortly after with much success. That's why "The Unnamables" (1971) is often regarded as a mythical album ! As every Musea reissue, the CD version includes biography, rare photographs, etc. Dear friends collectors, prepare your money !

4 out of 5 stars An introduction to Magma.......2004-09-03

Univeria Zekt was a one-time effort to introduce Magma while trying something simpler and different. Yet this material was outside the normal context of Magma, so that's why it's called "The Unnamables." This was done in late 1971 after Magma's second album "1001 Degrees Centigrade". There is a lot of variety here. There are similarities also. For instance:

"You Speak and Speak Colegram" and "Ourania" are not too far off from Soft Machine at the time of "Third".
"Altcheringa" sounds like early Chicago with a vocalist not much different from Terry Kath.
"Clementine" is the quietest and most melodic. It is an instrumental with flute, acoustic guitar, and bass.
"Something's Cast A Spell" sounds like Blood, Sweat, & Tears, only in a less commercial way.
"Africa Anteria" is the longest at 11:30 and starts off simple enough at the beginning. It is upbeat, then it gets more upbeat with a brass section that won't quit. Finally it becomes a drum solo with high-pitched avant-garde chanting, probably from Christian Vander himself. It reminds me of Stockhausen.
The last song "Undia" is sung in their Kobaian language, making it more like a Magma song. It seems to have some Eastern influence to it.
Overall, this is a great album. This is the one to get if you don't know about Magma, but wanted an idea. Univeria Zekt could be referred to as "Magma-lite."
