This CD pairs two prime Red Steagall records from the mid-1970s and reveals just why the Texan has become a pillar of Western music. The 1976 collection Lone Star Beer and Bob Wills Music marks the pinnacle of his recording career, offering a wonderful assortment of Western swing and Texas tonk. The title creed remains his biggest hit, but there are a number of other original songs--barroom ballads like "Neons and Nylons" and "Whatever Made Me Think" and two-steppers like "My First Night Without You" and "The Walls of This Old Honky Tonk"--that display his ample gifts as a direct, down-to-earth songwriter (he was a successful songwriter before he was a performer). Steagall enlisted a superlative cast of musicians including guitarist Leon Rhodes, fiddler Johnny Gimble, and steel man Sonny Garrish to help him carry out his vision. For All Our Cowboy Friends, from the following year, is a quaint and heartfelt tribute to the cowboy and rodeo lifestyle (he was a rodeo rider and horse breeder before he was a songwriter) that oozes personality and authenticity. Together, these two albums form a definitive Western music manifesto. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars Red Steagall CD.......2007-05-14

Lone Star Beer & Bob Wills Music is a good track, but For All Our Cowboy Friends is a GREAT track.

5 out of 5 stars Two classic western albums.......2005-01-14

Red was never a big name in country music but he carved his own niche and made a good living in the process. He spent many years performing on the rodeo circuit. His main influences are western swing (especially Bob Wills) and cowboy music (especially Marty Robbins). The two albums presented here demonstrate Red's music superbly.

Lone star beer and Bob Wills music, the first album here, is a western swing album. Red wrote or co-wrote five of the songs here including the title track. One of the other songs is a brilliant cover of Truck driving man, perhaps the best-known song here. In its way, this album is a fitting tribute to Bob Wills although none of his songs are covered here.

For all our cowboy friends, the second album, is a collection of cowboy songs. Red wrote six of the ten songs here including the title track. There are covers of My adobe hacienda and Little Joe the wrangler but Red avoided all the cowboy classics. With original songs as good as Red contributed to this album, he had no need to record the oldies although I'm sure he could have done them superbly.

The albums presented here are far removed from the commercial mainstream but there is a significant market for this type of music. If you enjoy western swing music by such as Bob Wills or Asleep at the wheel, buy this. If you enjoy cowboy music by such as Marty Robbins or Michael Martin Murphey, buy this. If you enjoy traditional country music with plenty of steel guitar and fiddle, buy this. But if you don't enjoy any of those types of music, look for something else.

5 out of 5 stars Red's the Best!.......2003-01-29

Are you a fan of western swing? How 'bout cowboys and rodeo? If you can answer yes to either of these, and you like western music then you owe it to yourself to check this out. Red, quite simply, puts out the best. I've been following him since the late 70's, used to follow him to honky-tonks and rodeos, from Sayre, Oklahoma to the NFR. Had both on albums but just now found these on CD. Try this CD and see if it's not the best combo of western-swing and cowboy music you've ever heard. Red, if you see this, wishing you all the best and a great big thank you for your music.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Red Steagall.......2001-07-10

If you appreciate Red Steagall you will appreciate this cd. It has some of his best Texas Swing music and his very best Rodeo Songs. After thousands of miles my tape of "All My Cowboy Friends" finally wore out and I thought I would never find another copy. Now I have another copy to help me get down the road again. Steagall's music is not for everyone but if you like his music this cd is what your looking for.

4 out of 5 stars good news and not-quite-good news.......2000-03-29

The first 10 cuts -- the ones that comprise the wonderful 1976album Lone Star Beer and Bob Wills Music -- are as close to perfectionas honkytonk swing gets. As I hear it again after a long separation, the album sounds as good as it did when I bought the LP version nearly a quarter-century ago and spent the next few years playing it down to the grooves. "Neons and Nylons" holds its own against any country song about drinkin', dancin', and chasin' women -- an inexplicably neglected masterpiece of hillbilly art and a surprisingly subtle evocation of both good times and melancholy reflection. "Under the X in Texas" and "Alexis from Texas" swing jauntily, and "Whatever Made Me Think" is as powerful a catch-in-the-throat country weeper as you're ever going to hear. With its brilliantly imagined and executed stripped-down sound, the album wastes not a note or a lick, and it lays end to end one magnificent song after another, reminding the listener just how good country music can be when placed in the right hands. Perhaps inevitably, Red Steagall's follow-up, included here (the last 11 cuts), is something of a letdown, a decent though hardly outstanding collection of cowboy (mostly rodeo) songs, none bad but none especially memorable; certainly none gets close to the standards Ian Tyson set long ago in his own rodeo tales, notably "Someday Soon" and "Old Cheyenne." Steagall's cover of "My Adobe Hacienda" is just plain uninspired; on the other hand, he proves that you can't go wrong with the venerable Western folk ballad "Little Joe the Wrangler." His "My America," though no "This Land Is Your Land," is better than its title would lead you to believe. Steagall's heart may be on the Western plains, but his soul is in the honkytonk.

Writer-director John Sayles's complex, adult mystery delves deeply into borders at myriad levels, a theme echoed beautifully in this collection of country, blues, norteño, R&B, and folk songs that appear as source cues in the film. Sayles's hand in picking them is evident in terms of both quality and thematic resonance: in a telling gesture, Ivory Joe Hunter's mournful "Since I Met You Baby" is answered with a Spanish cover version, created for the film, featuring Freddie Fender. Whether reinforcing the film's cultural milieu or underlining its emotions, strong performances from Lucinda Williams, legendary Mexican songstress Lydia Mendoza, Little Willie John, Little Walter, and Conjunto Bernal give Lone Star heft far beyond most cinematic song compilations. --Sam Sutherland

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent soundtrack!.......2001-11-20

This soundtrack really evokes the movie's many moods very well. Renewed my interest in Tejano music as well as traditional Mexican music!

5 out of 5 stars Let the Good Times Roll!!!.......2000-11-21

What can I say...This CD is raw knee smackin' fun! I plucked a couple of tunes on my trusty banjo afterwards. Me and my boys were hootin an hollarin' till the cows came home...literally! If you need some good music for a barn raisin', shiveree, or just a good ol' shindig, this is the CD for you. Hee Haw!

2 out of 5 stars Music good; quality BAD.......2000-04-22

If you are like me, you buy a soundtrack because the music really stood out in the movie, and, usually, you enjoyed the movie, so the music brings back a little of that good memory. John Sayles used the music in his movie as a transition between scenes and it was very effective. The traditional music is excellent. The reason for my 2 star review is the fact that the production quality on the CD is extremely bad. Granted, most of the songs were probably somewhat obscure and the original media may not have been top quality to begin with, but from the first song you really hear a hiss in your speaker like you are playing a tape recorded to another tape. This CD really needed some digital enhancement. Don't get me wrong, the music is excellent, but if you are one of those people who buys a CD for the reason that it is supposed to sound better than a tape, then, in this case, you would be just as well off purchasing the cassette and saving a few dollars.

4 out of 5 stars A great companion to a fantastic film.......1998-12-11

Like the film itself, the soundtrack to "Lone Star" is complex and thought-provoking. It's a good introduction to a variety of musical genres and plays well. I would have liked the album better without the music composed for the film; it's distracting and takes away from the melodic, melancholy works by Lydia Mendoza, Ivory Joe Hunter, and even Freddie Fender that so evoke the pensiveness of the movie. (I'm a little surprised that a Tejano movie soundtrack didn't have Flaco Jimenez on it, though.) Still, most of the songs are great. It's one of the few movie soundtracks I am glad I own.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best New Movie Soundtracks.......1998-06-20

I'll make it simple-rent the movie and you'll see! John Sayles knows how to pick a soundtrack as well as he writes, directs, and edits!

Nanci Griffith's MCA debut made some minor concessions to commercial country radio, without sacrificing the integrity of quiet, utterly personal songs. The steel guitar of Lloyd Green and the big drum sound of Russ Kunkel are the most distinctive additions to her "folkabilly." But producer Tony Brown deserves credit for never trying to make Griffith something other than one of the finest songwriters of her generation. "Ford Econoline," her tribute to folk singer Rosalie Sorrels, shows Griffith's deep understanding of the singer/songwriter tradition, a knowledge that sets her apart from peers like Mary Chapin Carpenter and Kathy Mattea. --Roy Kasten

    3 out of 5 stars Love in a Memory.......2007-03-22

While this isn't mature Nancy, I get plenty of enjoyment out of probably half the songs. I urge any fans of Flyer or "One Fair Summer Evening" to get a copy for the song "Love in a Memory" a little story song that hits with the weight of a Doestoevesky novel. The last verse will give you chills. ("His sons are young dreamers...")

The title song is a blast on the dance floor.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Album By Nanci.......2007-01-15

I Realy Like To Listen To This Lady, She Is Just Great....

5 out of 5 stars The original version of From a distance.......2005-08-17

Bette Midler had the big international hit, Cliff Richard had a big UK hit and Kathy Mattea recorded a country version (albeit with bagpipes) but Nanci Griffith recorded the original version of From a distance. Although Nanci wrote much of her own material, this is one that she didn't write. Nevertheless, it gave Nanci a massive career boost and remains the song that she is best remembered for.

This was the first of four albums that Nanci recorded for MCA. Note that all four have been re-packaged as a double-CD in the UK although they vary in style so some people may still prefer to buy this as a separate CD. Besides From a distance, it also includes such great songs as Lone star state of mind, Cold hearts closed minds, Sing one for sister, Ford Econoline, Let it shine on me and There's a light beyond these woods, to name just a few.

Nanci had a style that began as folk-country but she also attracted some rock fans when she subsequently brought other influences into her music. If you enjoy listening to Nanci the folk-country singer, this is for you, together with her Philo / Rounder albums Once in a very blue moon and Last of the true believers. Her more recent music is also of a high quality but different.

    5 out of 5 stars A must for a Nanci Griffith fan!.......2001-03-22

This is by far one of my favorites of Nanci's work. I adore her voice and love the sweetness and feeling as she delivers.

    5 out of 5 stars Bravo Nanci!.......2000-02-19

I love Nanci Griffith very much and have all of her cds. My love affair with her music started off with Other Voices/Other Rooms, now I have just got to see her in concert. I didn't think you could scratch a CD until I bought this one, and I have not traded it in yet. Maybe if I bought some scratch remover, this would help. I taped this CD for the assistant principal at our High School. She loves the tape a lot because she drives a Ford Econoline, she even listens to it while driving in her Ford, Econoline.

    Description

A tangy, melodious country-and-blues score! is how The New York Times described Lone Star Love when it played in New York last spring. Inspired by The Merry Wives of Windsor, Lone Star Love transports Shakespeare's immortal John Falstaff to post-Civil War Texas, where he wreaks havoc on the town of Windsor, and in so doing, gets his comeuppance. A toe-tapping, crowd-pleaser of a show, Lone Star Love features the beloved Red Clay Ramblers, who since 1975 have been melding bluegrass with jazz and rock, leading The New York Times to exclaim, "Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! The Red Clay Ramblers play like angels auditioning for Gabriel!"

I understand this show is coming to Broadway within the next year. I saw the show when it played off-Broadway last year and there are some great songs on this CD. I predict at least four numbers will become very popular (and probably adopted by some mainstream C&W stars)once the show attains Broadway status. The Red Clay Ramblers have produced some great music in the past but I predict this will be their best ever.

This compilation of live performances from 1960s-'70s Texas blues megastar Johnny Winter offers topnotch examples of the bigger-than-life psychedelic blues rock of the period. The collection features 11 tracks, many of them standards of the genre: "Jumping Jack Flash," "Big Boss Man," "Spoonful." Unfortunately, while the CD includes a fairly extensive bio of Winter, it doesn't include recording dates or locations for these tracks, possibly because in most cases they're unknown. A couple of guest appearances are noted, however: that's Jimmy Reed on "Big Boss Man," and Willie Dixon himself shows up for "Spoonful." Lone Star Shootout is, all in all, a highly enjoyable collection for those who like their Texas blues served straight up, with no wimpy lemon slices or dinky little umbrellas. Good stuff. --Genevieve Williams

Being a fairly new Winterhead, this was one of the first of his CD's that I bought. Sound quality is not altogether bad, but the music is unforgettable. Very enjoyable, and one that you will listen to time and time again. Best cuts, backstage version of Black Cat Bone, Mother Earth, and Help me.

3 out of 5 stars Great music, Bad sound quality.......2002-07-03

I picked up this CD today, being a fan of Johnny Winter, despite the warning on the back of the CD which says "Sound quality may not be equal to today's recording standards". Well, they weren't kidding. This CD sounds pretty bad. This is due, however, to the quality of the original tapes, not the CD mastering. I'm sure that they did the best they could with the material, but beware, the quality is weak. The songs were taken from different shows, so some songs sound better than others. At best, it's about bootleg quality.

Now on to the music itself. The note on the packaging is also right on about another thing: the performances DO kick .... They were compiled from shows in Austin and Dallas, Texas circa 1969 - 1974. Despite the shoddy sound quality, the performances are hot. Johnny is on fire on these tracks, particularly the scorching "Mother Earth". He does a little slide playing on "Black Cat Bone", and features a solo acoustic tune, "Lowdown Gal of Mine". Two blues legends also make appearances. Jimmy Reed on "Big Boss Man" and Willie Dixon on "Spoonful".

Johnny Winter fans should check this out, but be warned the sound is weak. Listen to this with headphones with the volume turned up loud. Also, the recording dates aren't listed in the liner notes, but it's definitely early in Johnny's career, mostly likely the early 70s.

Great Texas blues from a blues master. Just too bad the quality isn't better.

4 out of 5 stars Rock and Blues.......2002-06-25

Johnny Winter dominates his axe on this record. His guitar flows from great rock tunes to blues classics. Aside from his own music, he covers Sonny Boy Williamson's "Help Me" and the Rolling Stones "Jumping Jack Flash".This album fits well in my blues and rock collection. Highly recommended for all rock and blues fans.

We all relate to those albums that 'should have been huge' but weren't. Then many years later they somehow attract retospective attention for being ahead of their time. Well, here's 2-on-1 CD that is just that. I was lucky enough to see them live (supporting Mott!) and I can remember how they stood out from the pack then. The music still does today which is all one really needs to say. Power, melody, passion, prog, metal, originality, musicianship, soaring vocals .... it's got the lot. Buy, turn up and enjoy the ride.

I am 40 years old and remember cruising around with my buddies back in the 80's when i was 18 or 19 listening to UFO's obsession,Zeps live album, and some Vandenberg. It was the first time I ever heard Lone Stars firing on all six and I was quite simply just blown away. Years ahead of its time as sort of a mix of progressive, metal, jazz, rock or whatever, its songs stood out in my mind and I tried to find it for years but to no avail. After Michael Schenker left UFO for a solo career the band enjoyed the vast talents of guitarist Paul Chapman, and through his very own web site a couple of years ago I received my very own copy of Firing on All Six autographed by Paul. It held up just as I expected, the music was powerful, bass driven, with awesome keyboards and intricate guitar playing that was just exhilarating to experience. Paul Chapman remains one of the unsung guitar players of rock, and as such many people never have had the pleasure of experiencing this group or for that matter a good deal of UFO's awesome brand of blues metal. As I said this release was years ahead of its time and is just an awesome, awesome listen. I highly recommend it to fans of 80's metal, hard rock, prog rock,or even jazz. Its just that friggin good.

Gives you a sampling of his very many different musical talents. PUT THIS IN YOUR COLLECTION FOR SURE.
