    Album Description

Two CD set. The official Eurovision Song Contest album for 2007 featuring all 42 songs that are part of this prestigious annual European competition. From the centre of Helsinki, this year's competition is in the home of last years shock winners: Lordi, who will open the ceremony with their serene beauty! This year, the main ceremony takes place on May 12th and will be screened on BBC1. The semi final will take place a day or two before and will be screened on BBC3, where Europe will have the chance to vote for the rest of the countries who will make the final and have the opportunity of performing again to all of Europe and even Australia (who just love the contest!). Scooch are representing the UK with their pure pop number, but will they stand a chance against France's Les Fatals Picards with their kitsch pop pastiche 'L'amour À La Française', Romania's strangely (almost listenable) ethnic number by Todomondo, Greek pop god Sarbel who could get the ladies of Europe a bit hot under the collar with 'Yassou Maria' sung in Eurovision-friendly English or how about the soft Goth rock of Belarus entrant: Koldun who wants you to 'Work Your Magic'!?!! EMI.

For this movie about 1930s boxer Jim Braddock (Russell Crowe), director Ron Howard interrupted his longtime collaboration with composer James Horner and teamed up with Thomas Newman. It's a wise decision: Newman has a lighter touch and his somber palette emphasizes the fact that Cinderella Man is more thoughtful drama than mere brawling flick (even a track titled "Pugilism" eschews obvious punchiness in favor of ominous, rolling tribal-like percussion. Elsewhere, "Weehawken Ferry" illustrates Newman's ability to write swelling, majestic music that's not bombastic. Typical of the subdued approach is Paul Giamatti's version of "Londonderry Air," which he delicately whistles. The score is interspersed with a few lovely Depression-era tunes such as Chicago tenor saxist Bud Freeman's "Tillie¹s Downtown Now," Roane's Pennsylvanians' "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky," and especially Eddie Cantor's wonderfully biting "Cheer Up, Smile, Nertz" ("Our judges are queer/Our banks disappear/And all the while they tell us to smiiiiile"). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars The Soundtrack to Cinderella Man is great.......2007-01-11

Cinderella Man is one of my favorite movies of all time. And the soundtrack does not disappoint. They have all of the powerful songs heard on the DVD. It even has the songs that you could barely hear in the movie because they were simply background music to the scenes. For instance, when Mike Wilson and Jim Braddock sit down together after work and have a drink and discuss the troubled times their nation was facing during the depression, you can faintly hear a song called, "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky" by Roane's Pennsylvanians. That song is on here in its entirety.

The other example is found in the scene where Joe Gould is seen driving off after just speaking with Jim about his hopes of getting him another fight after Jim had defeated Corn Griffin. Joe is trying to leave before Mae can see him because he knows she would not approve of his talking with Jim and the potential of another fight for her husband. Anyway, just as he gets in the car, and as he drives off, you can here Bud Freeman's "Tillie's Downtown Now" being played--another great song from that era.

Every sound of Cinderella Man is found on this soundtrack. The lone downside to this CD is that the songs are not found in the order they appear in the movie. The first four songs are in order and the last five or so are in order, and the rest is thrown in the middle. They are all there, but as is typical for most soundtracks, they don't all coincide with the order presented in the picture.

This soundtrack is a terrific purchase for any fan of this movie. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Another good score from Thomas Newman........2006-11-07

Thomas Newman is becoming quite the composer. He has such a unique style, but is able to use it to compliment the movies he scores without the music sounding out of place or out of period. The tracks "Turtle" and "Pugilism" are fun to listen to. The first track is short and yet somehow moving. There are enough songs from the period to lend the right flavor to the soundtrack (including a track of Paul Giamatti whistling "Londonderry Air"). This one's definitely worth having if you're a fan of Thomas Newman.

    5 out of 5 stars Very nice.......2006-08-03

I suppose this would have been better, like another reviewer said, if some of the tracks had been more than minute-long cuts of the music from Cinderella Man. Still, it's a fantastic soundtrack!--I don't know what "conventional" meant when someone called it that, but if you like sad and somber music, you'll certainly like this. Try it. It's almost better than the movie itself, and the movie was great. After this, I have to hear Thomas Newman's other work.

    3 out of 5 stars Why..........2006-07-11

I dearly loved the movie, "Cinderella Man," and the music in it. However, why on earth, on the CD, did they play only a minute, or less, of some of the best music? Like, "Hope of the Irish," I liked that so much, but 52 seconds dosn't do it. In the film it was at least 3 minutes or more. I have decided not to buy the soundtrack simply because of this.

3 out of 5 stars A fairly conventional score for Thomas Newman, but enjoyable nonetheless.......2006-03-25

Cinderella Man is, in a way, a return to conventional scoring for Thomas Newman. For a long while we've heard world instruments and percussion banging it out before stopping to allow beautiful themes to grasp our souls, but in Cinderella Man the effort is more restrained. It is largely a score for piano and strings, and fans of Thomas Newman will have heard the sound before. But, all the same, it is an enjoyable score for Newman fans of both kinds, and while it does take a while to get into a full expression of the story, it is definitely worth the wait.

The piano is used a lot in the score, making appearances across most of the tracks, including the gentle "The Inside Out" or in "Mae", appear with the delicate strings that we have come to expect from Newman. "Pugilism" makes use of pizzicato movements, whereas the two Irish influenced tracks, "Hope of the Irish" and "Turtle", bring back some more unconventional instruments as one would expect. But largely, the score meanders in the background, establishing a delicate tone and texture, but never really taking a forefront. Of course, I must make mention of the wonderful "Weehawken Ferry", which presents a crisp walking movement of strings, similar to what was heard in Shawshank Redemption. However, it is not until the final few tracks that the music finally free's itself from it's subdued nature and reaches out. "Big Right" explodes with blaring french horns and sharp strings, until it finally fades off and allows the highlight track, "Cinderella Man", to come in. This track is Newman at his best, with his typical soaring string arrangement of the main theme introduced in "The Inside Out", before finally reverting back to quiet woodwinds and piano near the end.

Cinderella Man is by no means an innovative or groundbreaking score - it's a fairly conventional drama score. The same adjectives could be applied to the movie as well. Is it worth the pick-up? Definitely, if you are looking for more Newman goodness. However, if you're looking to get into the world of Newman with a more colorful score - try "Angels in America" or "Road to Perdition".

      Album Description

Evelyn Ryan (Julianne Moore) is a devoted housewife and mother of ten in the 1950s. Her husband (Woody Harrelson) can't seem to make ends meet, but that doesn't stop the car from breaking down, the mortgage coming due and the bills from piling up. It falls to Evelyn to defy the conventions of the day and find a way to keep her family together with the odds stacked against them. Applying her remarkable resourcefulness and an uncommon wit, Evelyn finds her own way in the profitable jingle contests popular in the 1950s and'60s.

Composer John Frizzell adds his own sophisticated sound to the compositions and brings on two great musicians - Sara and Sean Watkins - to play fiddle and guitar. The Soundtrack includes recordings by The Ames Brothers, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Dee Carstensen, Kay Starr and new recordings by k.d. lang "I'm Sitting on top of the World" and the film's Woody Harrelson.

The Simon and Schuster book The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio: How my mother raised 10 kids on 25 words or less (by Terry Ryan) is currently available.

        5 out of 5 stars A+ Snare Drum Work!!!.......2001-05-25

This is a fantastic album. It's an absolute must for any student or enthusiast of drumming. The snare drum solos on this recording are executed flawlessly and serve as an excellent study reference filling a real void. Mr. Gauthreaux has obviously spent a lot of time working on his craft. There are some wonderful classics performed, including 'Three Camps', 'Downfall of Paris', and my favourite 'Grandfather's Clock'. The sound of the recording is also excellent and very "true" to the instruments used (love that Gladstone Snare). It's about time somebody recorded these solos - great job!!!!

            Album Description

Angels of Mineral Springs is a CD of eleven original songs by Chris Stuart. The songs range from pure bluegrass ("The Road Into Town") to the Irish-influenced "I Did Not Hear Them Go". It might best be described as a "story" album with strong lyrics and attention to acoustic arrangements that place each song in it's own world.

5 out of 5 stars Great "back porch" music..........2007-01-18

Before television or radio, there was a time when folks would gather on the back porch after all the evening chores were done and pass around a guitar, making their own entertainment. Chris' music reminds me of that. Very relaxing, moving when it's supposed to be, and always pleasant.

I'm so glad I own this album!

            5 out of 5 stars Well-produced Americana from a masterful storyteller/singer.......2003-01-28

I first became familiar with Chris Stuart when he was performing with the fine contemporary bluegrass band, Cornerstone. Originally from Florida, Chris is now a Californian who clearly shows that he's still got southern musical sensibilities and a knack for crafting and singing beautiful expressive songs with meaningful messages. In 1993, Stuart took top honors in both the bluegrass and gospel categories at the Merlefest Chris Austin songwriting contest. Over the years, his songs have been recorded by Claire Lynch, Suzanne Thomas, Sally Jones, the Schankman Twins, Tina Adair, and others. Best described as Americana music, "Angels of Mineral Springs" features first-rate guest artists Ron Block, Chris Jones, Irl Hees, Gabe Witcher, Pam Daley, Eric Uglum, Marshall Andrews, and others. Besides guitar, violin, bass and some sparingly used mandolin and banjo, Hammond organ, percussion, cello, viola, tinwhistles, and keyboard also find their way into the mix on this album.

Gabe Witcher fiddles a haunting half-minute "Desert Lullaby Intro" to set the stage for a sad tale of doom in "Springhill Mine." Pam Daley provides a beautifully blended harmony vocal on this, and other ballads on the album. A funky classic soulful sound is given to "Elvis Stays Home," which tells of one of Elvis' childhood dreams, its foreboding of the future, and what Elvis would've done had he not left to become King. "I Did Not Hear Them Go," a relaxed Celtic-flavored song, is an expressive and unique way to ask about lost loves. Ron Block's banjo drives a bluegrassy "The Road Into Town," with its "love of the old mountain home" theme. The album's title cut is an uplifting tale of two angels. Pam Daley and Gabe Witcher provide a rawboned arrangement of "Desert Lullaby," a soothing new-timey tune with an old-timey feel featuring only vocals and fiddle. The singing of Chris Stuart, Pam Daley and Eric Uglum sent a chill up my spine as they harmonize "Saro, I'll forever call your name" for a pioneer child lost. Country music influences are apparent as the album begins to draw to a close with the songs, The Last Yellow Rose, Slow Dancing at Evangeline's, and Chasing the Fire. Stuart ends the project with an inspirational message of hope in "A Single Candle."

Chris Stuart is a talented singer and masterful storyteller. With this album, he takes his eloquent lyrics, and complements them with beautiful accompaniment and pleasant musical arrangements. It's simply exceptional music, spiced up with many different influences so all should find something to tingle their aural palette on "Angels of Mineral Springs." I personally wouldn't have minded a few more uptempo pieces, but, all in all, this album is a very professional and well-produced showcase for Americana singer/songwriter Chris Stuart. He is currently fronting a band called "Chris Stuart and Backcountry" so look for them also at a venue or festival near you. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now magazine)

            5 out of 5 stars Top pick.......2002-09-25

Got my copy of this CD the other day. It's a breath-taking recording, expertly crafted by one of the best songwriters anywhere. It's my pick for the best alt.country recording of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Chris Stuart - Angels of Mineral Springs.......2002-09-09

This CD is a must have for anyone who appreciates great music with meaningful and heartfelt lyrics. Chris Stuart has assembled some of the finest musicians in the business today. Each song is carefully produced and meticulously arranged in order to allow the listener to experience each song just the way the artist had envisioned it.

Every cut on the project was written by Chris. In addition to his wonderful songwriting, Chris' vocal performance is outstanding. Chris displays his versatility on slow ballads like "Saro" and "Springhill Mine," a hard driving bluegrass song "The Road Into Town," and the lighter (or maybe deeper) songs like "Elvis Stays Home."

Helping out on this project is Ron Block of Alison Krauss and Union Station on guitar and banjo, Irl Hees of Lonesome River Band on bass, Chris Jones on vocals, Pam Daley on vocals, Gabe Witcher on fiddle, Eric Uglum of Lost Highway on guitar, Marshall Andrews of Lost Highway on bass, Roger Gillespie on percussion, and Eva Vazzana on keyboard.

Chris co-produced the project along with Janet Beazley who also adds just the right amount of tinwhistles and flute in all the right places.

The project was engineered and mastered by Eric Uglum at New Wine Studio in Hesperia, CA.

If you are looking for a traditional bluegrass CD this is not it, but if you want some great music done superbly, you need look no farther than Chris Stuart's "Angels of Mineral Springs." This is the best CD I have heard this year! If I could give it more than 5 stars I would.

4 out of 5 stars Nice fuzzy indie rock.......2004-02-15

Jangly, propulsive, anthemic, fuzzed out power-poppish rock. This Midwestern husband-wife duo, drummer Amanda Ziemba and guitarist/bassist Joe Ziemba, split the harmony and lead vocals and move all over the indiepop landscape, with dashes of Green Day, The Softies, subtler '60s pop and plenty of grinding, shimmery guitars. It's pretty much stuff you've heard elsewhere before, but as you listen to the whole album, their sound grows on you and emerges from the shadow of generic sameiness. It's impressive that two people can make so much noise together, and that it all sounds so cohesive. Not bad!

When I was recently in Chicago I had a chance to see this band perform live. I wasnt sure at first, but once the show started I couldnt believe my ears. I had to buy this CD after the show. ... It is worth the money trust me.

The Like Young is a small band made up of Joe doing the vocals, guitar, and bass and Amanda his wife playing the drums and doing a small amount of vocals. This is one my favorite bands and this energatic cd will realy wake you up in the mourning. This cd is almost impossible to dislike...
