Amazon.com essential recording
Only months after his initial conquest with My Aim Is True, Elvis Costello delivered an even fiercer diatribe. His first record with the long-running Attractions, 1978's This Year's Model remains one of that blistering rock year's most indelible albums. Orwellian even when not directly alluding to the great man (a sly nod to 1984 on "Living in Paradise"), the 22-year-old and band crashed through the raging anti-party of "Pump It Up" ("When you don't really need it"), the perverted Spectorisms of "Hand in Hand," the punk manifesto "Radio, Radio," and the stylishly anti-fashion "This Year's Girl" (in the season of Suzanne Somers, no less) with no less force than the Clash. Probably his greatest, most elegantly imagined and rendered long-player. The bonus tracks on Rhino's 2002 edition include an "Alison"-style take on Costello's country ballad "Stranger in the House" and a cover of the Damned's "Neat Neat Neat," both early proof of the new king's adeptness at outfitting his sets with conceptually brilliant surprises. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:
A rock classic beautifully rendered on cd.......2007-01-30
The merits of this album need not be discussed here. This Year's Model has been widely regarded as a rock classic for over twenty years now. What does need addressing, however, is the sound Rhino has acheived in rendering this recording on cd.
The 'remastering' game that has been going on for the past decade has yielded mixed results. Record companies promising superior sound have come up short more than half the time when it comes to reissuing classics. Lucky for us, that's hardly the case with Rhino's treatment of Elvis Costello's back catalog.
This Year's Model is what every fan hopes for when plunking down hard earned cash for an album he already owns. The sound is incredibly warm with every instrument coming through distinctly. It is as if the Attractions have set up shop in your living room. Seriously, the immediacy of this recording is so impressive that I had to play it on the cheapest stereo in my house just to make sure I wasn't imagining it.
Revisit a classic and hear what you missed the first time around. This Rhino series will be the death of our pocketbooks.
elvis's 2nd album, one of the best by about anyone.......2006-09-13
i had been in a deer hunting accident. i awoke in a hospital and down the hall a boombox was playing this album very loudly. i knew everything was going to be okay.
Well worth re-buying.......2006-04-27
I owned an older CD of this from the 80s, one of his rocking-est albums and my favorite, along with "Delivery Man". The definitely superior sonic remaster (not a lot of obvious re-mixing for a change!), the bonus disc and informative liner notes really made this worth buying. I subsequently bought the other remasters with bonus discs, and now have a huge library of THE Elvis (as I heard him claim on a radio interview in 1977), with loads of demos, alternative versions and tasty goodies.
His masterpiece enhanced by second disc.......2006-03-15
This second album by Elvis Costello is far better than My Aim is True, in my opinion. The tunes are more immediate with much more of a pop flavour whilst the music is also more rhythmically varied and compelling. It marks the transition to his wonderfully accessible Armed Forces masterpiece.
There is even a reggae beat in (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea and a ballad with lovely piano - Little Triggers. My favourites on the original disc are the up-tempo Pump It Up, You Belong To Me and the poignant This Year's Girl, plus of course the pulsating Radio Radio with its subversive lyrics. Night Rally is somewhat dark and disturbing.
The second disc includes a wealth of previously unreleased tracks, demo tracks, live and alternative versions. Not all of these alternate takes are as gripping as the familiar versions but they are certainly interesting and worthwhile, demonstrating various facets of his extraordinary musicianship.
I think this is Costello's best..........2006-01-26
In truth, I've only been exposed to ten or eleven of Elvis' 30+ records. Some are very good. Some are very bad. Still others are just okay. But This Year's Model beats 'em all, except possibly its sequel, Armed Forces.
The first thing you may notice about this album is the difference in bands. Clover, Costello's collaborators on My Aim Is True (his third-best), were just another bar band. Not the Attractions. The Attractions were an anaglam of punk, New Wave and a bit of funk (listen to Bruce Thomas' bass, and you'll know what I'm talking about). They're also far more fierce. They don't just rock, they rock with a vengeance. And everybody adds something important: Bruce and Pete Thomas give a strong, supple, funk-rock rhythm section; Steve Nieve, weird, sometimes cheesy keyboards. And Elvis of course gives the VENOM.
Then there's the songwriting, which is even sharper than it was first time out. The melodies are always strong, whether the song itself is great (the Beatles-like No Action; the cynical This Year's Girl, lightspeed Lipstick Vogue) or just okay (Little Triggers, Hand in Hand). But even the just-okay songs are listenable. And the lyrics. Remember how I talked about venom? It's all over the place. You've got your big, bad, funky anti-hendoist classic Pump It Up (with the ultimate shout-along chorus - arena-ready, but in a good way. And that bass solo!), the nervy, paranoid, very underrated Beat (which I think is my favorite on the album - I love the chorus and Neive's keyboards), the unforgivably nasty, take-no-prisoners attitude of This Year's Girl (Based on the Rolling Stones' Stupid Girl, which it manages to one-up in the anger department); the aforementioned Lipstick Vogue, which again spares nothing in putting down an ex-lover ("Sometimes I almost feel... just like a human being" - great, GREAT lyric), and my second-favorite, (I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea, where Costello unloads all his ire against vanity. And it's funky, with Elvis almost rapping over the tight groove. Love it. Oh, almost forgot the Spector-esque protest Radio, Radio. WHAT A SONG! While Costello was mad with everybody, he decided corrupt, payola-influenced DJ's would be another valid target. And while it's essentially whining, who can argue with the brutal lyric "They say you'd better listen to the voice of reason/but they don't give you a choice because they think that it's treason" (or something like that)? Love the video, too. I'm not the kind who sits around watching MTV or VH1 - I saw it at a Hard Rock Cafe - but it was amazing, just so unpretentiously fun - look at Steve Nieve in the background, totally making a fool of himself. (It's worth noting that, right afterwards, GN'R's pompous, unintentionally hilarious video for Estranged came on - no need to ask which one I prefered, I hope). More to the point though, that's a hell of a video.
And this is a hell of an album. Like My Aim is True and Armed Forces, it's all the Costello a beginner needs, along with a compilation of some kind.

Marshall Crenshaw never again scored the commercial success he saw with his acclaimed 1982 self-titled debut, but he kept the knack for writing melodically rich, evocative, touching songs. Culled from releases over a 15-year period (from the explosive '81 single "Something's Gonna Happen" to the fine Miracle of Science), This Is Easy leans heavily toward the pensive side of Crenshaw's oeuvre. Whether nicking an old B.B. King album title ("Blues Is King") for a generalized lament or facing specific questions raised by the everyday ("You Should've Been There," "Better Back Off"), Crenshaw always offers a riff, a hooky chorus, and a thoughtful outlook to ensure each of these songs their long lives. With many of their source albums out of print, This Is Easy fills a real void. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Solid Compliation.......2006-08-19
Marshall Crenshaw does make it seem easy, doesn't he? His songwriting and lyrical abilities complement each other fine and the result is work that always seems fresh and original...no matter how many times I listen. I tnink the fact that he is able to deliver a pop-rock sound with substance and a signature sound is what separates him from his peers. This compilation exhibits this and further adds fuel to the Crenshaw reputation that still is prominate in musically educated circles.
Best stuff on his first two albums.......2004-12-28
This disc reveals clearly that Crenshaw shot his creative wad on his first two albums, "Marshall Crenshaw" and "Field Day." After that he maintained his pleasant and distinctive sound, but the songs were mostly echoes. The songs from those early discs deserve 4 and 5 stars, but the rest get 1 or 2 stars.
The Album I'd Take to a Desert Island.......2004-06-20
There are very few albums that I would label as "must haves." "This is Easy" is one of them.
The word "underappreciated" is tossed around all the time in regards to Crenshaw. I don't think this word fairly applies. I think that the people who've heard his music appreciate it a great deal. "Underheard" is probably a better choice of adjective.
As it says in the liner notes for "This is Easy," it is almost a crime that Crenshaw's work didn't get played on the radio, or MTV or - well - much of anywhere. His songs are catchy, his lyrics earnest without seeming dopey and his musicianship first class. Perhaps his sound was just too "old fashioned" for the New Wave '80s and Grunge '90s, but I propose that his work has stood the test of time much better than many of the bands with whom he competed for airplay.
Hats off to you, Marshall.
This is easy, easy music to love.......2004-02-15
THIS IS EASY is a way above average greatest hits collection, for the simple reason that Marshall Crenshaw has been one of the finest writer/performers of the past twenty years. Beginning with his stunning debut album MARSHALL CRENSHAW, in 1982, he has produced a string of first rate albums filled with superb songs, the vast majority written by Crenshaw, with an occasionally gem by someone else, like the incredible "I'm Sorry (And So Is Brenda Lee)," written by Ben Vaughan.
The bulk of the great songs come from Crenshaw's first three extraordinary albums (all well worth owning) the eponymous first album (1982), FIELD DAY (1983), and DOWNTOWN (1985). Over half the album derives from these three albums. These contain what is arguably the best pop rock produced by any American performer in the early 1980s. I've played the album for friends who were only slightly familiar with Crenshaw, and while they recognized and liked the songs, I have wondered why they weren't far more widely known than they are.
I have become increasingly convinced that record companies play no useful role in a society where methods of music distribution have changed so dramatically. If one could eliminate the record companies, eliminate monopolies like Clear Channel (the first of these is inevitable, the second unfortunately not), perhaps talent rather than hype and promotion and the monopolization of the airwaves would determine whether or not performers would rise to the top. There are literally hundreds of bands and musicians who have been forced down our throats because the record companies have built them up and then overexposed them. Meanwhile, first-rate talents like Marshall Crenshaw don't receive the hype, and don't get the exposure that they deserve. The record companies and the monopolies don't deserve to control the airwaves if for no other reason than the fact that they have done such a miserable job of promoting talent.
In a better world, where talent determined whether or not someone's music was widely heard, Marshall Crenshaw would have been huge. This isn't a hard conclusion at which to arrive. In fact, it is easy.
This Is....great songwriting.......2004-02-02
Like so many "smart songwriters" in the world of rocking pop music (think John Hiatt, Clive Gregson, Dwight Twilley, Tim and Neil Finn, etc), Marshall Crenshaw never seemed to get the total respect due him. Sure, he's had some breaks. Not everyone gets their songs covered by Bette Midler or gets featured in a few big budget Hollywood movies. Or for that matter, even gets to crack the top 40 at all, as Crenshaw did with "Someday Someway." It's just that musically, Crenshaw released a perfect debut to critical raves and pop success, then saw it slowly recede as he released solid albums year after year. While I am fortunate to have most of the original CDs, most of them are out of print. Most aren't even listed on Amazon as available used!
So then as usual, it's Rhino to the rescue. Gathering 22 songs from the albums up to "Miracle of Science" must have been a daunting task. After all, how could you choose what to include and omit? While I do agree that some of his later day albums get the short shrift (especially "Life's Too Short"), there is hardly a song here that I can't listen to over and over again. Like the modern day Buddy Holly he is, Crenshaw blends both a certain innocence and naivete with world weary charm, perhaps best exemplified by "This Is Easy" and "Cynical Girl."
Go ahead, just try and listen to the CD and NOT go around with at least one of the hooks bubbling around in your head for the next 36 hours. From the rockabilly shake of that first single, "Something's Gonna Happen," to the closing beauty of "Starless Summer Sky," this is pop with bits so catchy you'll think something is stuck to your shoe. Even his cover selections (Hiatt's "Somewhere Love Can't Find Me," Ben Vaughn's "I'm Sorry (But So Is Brenda Lee)") show the kind of affection for sophisticated pop music that would glut the radio if there were any justice in the world.
I really can't think of anything bad to say about this CD, other than the fact that I want "This is Easy, Too" to eventually show up. "Fantastic Planet Of Love," "Hold It," "Rocking Around in NYC," "Steel Strings," "Crying, Waiting, Hoping" (from "La Bamba"), "She Hates to Go Home," "Valerie," "Some Hearts," etc. etc...........how about it Rhino?

"Magnificent" is the right word.......2006-12-13
I love every song on this CD. Chris's creativity is amazing with or without his brother (although "with" is stellar.) He's an incredible singer and a man who gives so much soul to his lyrics. He pulls you into that other world with him like a modern day pied piper. (There wouldn't be much pulling with me. I'd follow him anywhere.)
The dreaminess of Train Robbers (seemingly inspired from Butch Cassidy), Like a Tumbleweed in Eden, ...If you see California, Eagles on the Highway--all great. He rocks out in Sea of Love--those drums are powerful--turn this up really loud for the full effect. Who is he talking about in Surgical Glove? Hmm.
This quickly became one of my favorite albums. People just don't realize how talented Chris is--I don't believe he will ever get his due nor would he care. I come back to This Magnificent Distance again and again--I usually listen to it every week--it's a staple in my car. YEAH Chris!
"You're coming down, you're never the same".......2006-10-02
This is one of those albums that are so unique and so special, that you know it won't get the acclaim it deserves. In the best case scenario, people would discover it 30 years from now, like we discover forgotten albums from the 60's and the 70's.
And it can't be any other way.
This is not an album for the masses. Its not cheerful, its not comforting, and its not romantic. This is not "popular" music, but personal music at its best. Its Chris's personal mix of styles and inspirations, his personal lyrics and songs, and for those of us who fell in its magic, its our personal soundtrack. When someone asks me what is the sort of music that I love the most, I put This Magnificent Distance in the stereo.
From the crunching riffs of Forty Days, you know that you go on a journey, a personal journey through the music styles that defined Chris Robinson as an artist, as well as defined my taste of music. Then, the haunting magic of Girl On The Mountain, followed by the organic sound of Mother Of Stone, with its beautiful touch of percussions. Train Robbers offers a nostalgic look at one of the most romantic scenes of the "old times" - the train robbers (the original title of the song was "the last of the old time train robbers"), but the music is an evidence that the "old time", free-form rock is still alive. For many reasons, Chris Robinson IS the last of the old time train robbers: he is the last of the old-time musicians, sings from his soul and making real, uncompromisig and somewhat unpopular music. The song ends with a teriffic solo from Paul Stacey. The next song. Like A Tumbleweed In Eden, is a Dylanesque ballad. You can really feel Dylan's influence on this slow and haunting number. The next song, When The Cold Wind Blows At The Dark End Of Night, is the song that captures the feeling of a hollucionary drug in the best and most honest way. With its changing speeds, the painfully disharmonic bridge and its haunting lyrics. "You're coming down, you're never the same".
...If You See California offers a nice relaxation from Cold Wind Blows, and its a much needed rest. This is a beautiful number, simple and optimistic. It is clearly influenced and currespond with Dylan's Girl From The North Country, a song that Chris has covered many times with the Black Crowes. The Never Empty Table is a mid-tempo return to the 60's sound as well as state of mind, as Chris offers us all a place on his table. By opening your mind to this album, you accept the offer. Eagles On The Highway is the music of America: Its display of obvious Americana icons in the lyrics (Eagles, Highway) as well as musical fusion of Rock with touches of country, blues and soul. Surgical Glove is a small epic. Its got a riff that puts you in another place and another time. Sea Of Love is a dark hard rocker, perhaps the least accessible song on this album, but its got its dark magic, waiting to be discovered. The albums closes with the bluesy Piece Of Wind, with a great, long harmonica solo at the end.
This album is differt from the Black Crowes popular cuts, and can only be described as the next musical stage after 3 Snakes And One Charm (with songs like One Mirror Too Many, Bring On Bring On and How Much For Your Wings in mind). This album is certainly not for everyone, and will never appeal for the masses. But this is what makes it so good.
Terrific follow-up.......2006-08-27
Unlike his solo debut, which was softer in scope, this is most certainly and undeniably a "rock" record. And though there are elements in some of these songs that remind the listener of his previous offering, "This Magnificent Distance" is a good old-fashioned 70s-style hippie rock record at the core. The songs grab you immediately, which makes this a wonderfully engaging testament to Robinson's creative evolution as a songwriter.
Excellent.......2006-04-28
I'm not even sure where to start with this guy. The Black Crowes are pretty much the new Allman Brothers, in more ways than one. The more I listen to, learn about, and explore this band the more I'm amazed. Such is the case with Chris' solo stuff as well. What a gift he's got, lyrically AND musically. You can be a close-minded person and label hippie/psychedelic rock but this album will seriously blow your mind. The New Earth Mud will, as well. Do yourself a favor and at least give it a listen...whether or not you like the Black Crowes a lot or not.
A Must Buy For Crowes Fans!!.......2006-01-30
If you have the true Crowes bug, you will love it. I was suprised to find out how much I actually like it. It is an alternative to a more calmer side of chris. Like the Crowes it will grow on you and than you won't be able to shake it. It is worth the buy.

a good sound from the southside johnny band, can't wait to see them @ the end of the week!!!
Excellent Value for the money.......2006-08-07
If you're searching for Southside Johnny albums, you're going to definitely want the first 3, which are not really easily found these days in the US. The best-of is good, but you really owe it to yourself to hear the first 3 records, complete. Since the 3-fer box is out of print, you should pick this cd up (it's a UK import) and then go score a copy of Hearts of Stone (total s/b around $30 all-in) and you'll add three essential Jersey albums to your collection. They're must-hears for fans of Bruce, a testimony to Miami Steve's genius, songwriting & production chops and good taste, and SSJ and the Jukes ain't too shabby live either (if you get a chance to see them).....
A Jukes two-fer that deserves space on your CD rack!.......2005-04-09
Let's just say Bruce Springsteen was the other guy who helped contribute to the "Asbury sound". It always amazes me how many Springsteen fans know so little about Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. That is truly a shame. These first two albums reissued on a single CD is a fine place to start for anybody yearning for some great rock & roll with one of the finest singers & a crack horn section to boot. Oh, the guest appearances are great too, Lee Dorsey & Ronnie Spector duet with Johnny on a couple of numbers. Springsteen & Van Zandt contribute heavily to the writing & arranging of these 1st two albums. Steven Van Zandt was then still a member of The Asbury Jukes before becoming a full-time E Streeter behind Bruce. The fact that Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes have not yet been considered for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is an injustice. Superb songwriting, soulful singing, and the band ROCKS! These are the first two albums of that great Jukes Triumvirate. I bought "This Time It's For Real" at the time of its release, and I still listen to it at least once a week. This music is like fine wine - it only gets better with age. If these don't move you to your soul, nothing will. . .
Music speaks for itself.......2004-05-14
If you are reading this, then you know the music itself is 5 stars. I beleive the liner notes are rather extensive than the originals, and possibly re-mastered. But c'mon, Amazon, the Asbury DUKES? It's the Asbury Jukes...this ain't Hazzard County.

Fall in to submission, hit and run transmission.......2007-05-06
If "My Aim Is True (With Bonus Disc)" landed on the music scene like a stick of dynamite with the fuse lit, "This Year's Model" was the explosion that came after. Elvis' first album with the Attractions more than lived up to its predecessor, in that having a working band behind him matched the music to the blunt force of the songs.
Once again, it is the stark voice of EC that opened the album as he ominously intones "I don't wannna kiss you, I don't wanna touch." When the players kick in, it's a whole 'nother world from "My Aim Is True," and for the first time, "new wave" had a front man. Before this album had been released, one of the central songs had made headlines. Elvis' broadside at narrow-format broadcasting, "Radio Radio," was performed in such a bizarre fashion on Saturday Night Live that he was effectively banned from the show for almost a decade and made this (then) seventeen year-old a fan for life. That performance sealed a decision for me to get into radio and make artists like Elvis accessible to listeners. When I was fortunate enough to tell him this many years later, Elvis kindly autographed a ragged poster of "Armed Forces" "Don't blame me."
Personal nostalgia aside, fourth CD version "This Year's Model" contains all the songs that comprised the original US and UK versions and the original UK artwork. These are some of the songs by which EC is measured, like "Radio Radio," "Pump it Up" and "The Beat." The Attractions' playing was melody driven in addition to frenetic, a perfect compliment to Elvis' brilliant lyrics. And it was already becoming apparent that keyboardist Steve Nieve was becoming an architect of what American ears would identify as "punk rock." The remainder of "This Year's Model" provides some hot songs that proved what this band of raving 20 somethings were capable in their rock and roll youth. This was the second of Elvis' "Angry Young Man" trilogy and it is a perfect moment.

Best BJM Yet!!!.......2007-05-02
This is the best BJM album to date. I love all the BJM records but I listen to this album everyday. Seriously, I left it over at a friends house one night by accident, the next day he went out of town for a week and I was really considering buying it again at a local record store because 7 days without it seemed too long. You really get the sense that Anton is hitting his musical zenith with this album.
And this is our music. "Tomorrows Heroes Today".......2006-10-24
This album is a bit more mellow than "TPW:A Retro".
It contains some great tracks such as "Here it comes", "Starcleaner".
There are more instrumentals on this album, more than the other albums.
I still love their music either way.
Believe Us, Baby..........2005-12-18
I admit to never listing to this band, or the Dandy Warhols until this year. I had heard of them, but nothing more. Intrigue led me to buy this album, and I have to say its a great one. "Here It COmes" is beautiful and introspective, "Geezers" rocks, and has one of the greatest lyrical hooks ever. "You Look Great" makes me rock out with air drums. "Starcleaner" is amazing in how much it truly sounds like a psychedelic tune from the 60s. "PRozac And Heroin REvisited" is such a trip, I cant help but raise my arms and sway in slow motion. ITs one of my favorites on this album, and I REFUSE to pick a favorite. "Here To Go" is achingly beautiful and sad. "Maryanne" Im not thrilled with. I usually fast forward through it. Sorry guys. ;o) "Some Things Go..." is also a great melody. Very CHill. I think this a a superb album on the whole, and I get such a rush when I discover such a fantastic band that slipped under my radar. I highly reccommend this one, and Im sure Ill gush over the other ones, as I buy them. THanx for the music guys. :o)
the strongest album to date instead of just a collection of great songs.......2005-10-06
ok this is deffintly there most focused album. The musical peices fit in with the whole cd, making it the most trippy and epic sounding album. R. Hillary "abdominal surgery patient",this persons facts are all wrong so i wouldnt really listen to what he/she says. like that there were 42 albums in the past 10, years i think there on #9, im not exactly sure but, pretty sure. Also on my cd there are only 15 tracks and i think 2 instramentals they all flow so well that it dosnt really mater so much, beleive me you will love this album if you like trippy 67 era music. Not that there exactly retro but it sounds like Anton has perfected psycadelic music. Also You look great when im F**ked up is only 3min 14sec, so i really dont no what album abdominal surgery patient is listening to because its not the same one i have, and there are words to it, so maybe he has a diffrent copy then i have, i dont no.
why not.......2005-01-02
I always thought that the BJM's really good stuff where the older albums they produced with Matt Hollywood and the other great musicians they had but this new album is just phenomenal like the others. The melodys man Anton Newcombe is by far the greatest musican I've heard. Every song on this album is great and his supporting cast of musicians do not fail to produce the highest quality of music like the older musicians had done. I began to just like the record but after i heard the song "When Jokers Attack" man that killed anything i had heard with a melody like that before. This is a must to any music fan, you don't realy have to get into the BJM's older material to like this. Why Not get it.

Classic electric Lindley.......2007-02-27
This oddly titled 2nd release from David Lindley and El Rayo-X is my favorite from this era. It includes the usual top notch covers and more than usual of his own quirky songs like the classic TALK TO THE LAWYERS, the enigmatic driving SPODIE, the short and so sweet acoustic instrumental LOOK SO GOOD (a good foreshadow of his career to come), as well as the rockin', MAKE IT ON TIME, and playful RAM-A-LAMB-A-MAN. Besides his own tunes it includes my favorite covers like TURNING POINT, BROTHER JOHN, and PREMATURE.
Throughout, the band is tight and relaxed, rockin yet restrained in a nice balance; Lindley delivers just the right notes at just the right time. The covers are done with the typical El Rayo-X roots-rock or reggaeized treatements. While this recording sounds like it's from the early 80's all the songs have aged well and I like to hear 'em regularly, especially when I want to hear Lindley's electric slide, smile and feel good!
Let this whole thing grab you.......2005-02-28
The song "Talk To The Lawyer" sounds like it is based on reality. Getting a telephone call from someone who could be from the FBI or CIA might be a common experience for people in the public eye who think that certain things are funnier than other people would openly admit. David Lindley has a knack for opening some cans of worms that other people would avoid. Lately he has been singing about a catfood sandwich in a tribute to food in the green room in places he has toured, which I may never forget. Many musicians get excellent timing from spending so much of their real life on stage. Lindley has the comic mentality needed to keep hammering away at a joke until you expect to keep hearing it forever.
Many of these songs (Turning Point, Brother John, Premature, Rock It With I, Ram-A-Lamb-A-Man) sound like the style of Caribbean music that occasionally are good enough to become pop songs. The starting song, "Something's Got a Hold on Me," is rousing in its theme and rhythms. The last verse has a few words that you might not catch the first time. Unlike Ed Sullivan asking the Rolling Stones to muffle some words on "Let's Spend the Night Together" to avoid ruffling the feathers of those who don't want to think about what is going on when young people go out with each other, David Lindley might be distorting his normal singing style to sound like he is suffering from some unexpected agony when he gets to the line, "I lower the stone but I hurt all day." Only those who are determined to know every word of that song are likely to realize that he is singing about something that apoplectic, precious, or whatever, but (for dramatic reasons) the song makes sense best if that is the last line anyone is likely to figure out. In the chorus, enthusiasm for the euphemism *love* predominates. "Make It On Time" is also a rousing song. The final song, "Look So Good," reminds me of someone playing `Amazing Grace' on a slide guitar. David Lindley plays such guitars extremely well, tours occasionally, and I'm glad I had a chance to see him in 2004. I've had these songs much longer and knew who he was before I tried to learn any of the songs he plays, but I still like "Something's Got A Hold On Me" better than the rest.
Excellent !!!.......2003-02-19
Like Mr. Beamer I had the pleasure of taking in the live viewing of David Lindley "The Legend" at the "Belly Up Tavern" in Solana Beach, CA, very likely we were at the same show becasue if I recall correctly they only played one weekend. I had already been an avid listener of Lindley's and was eager to hear him live. Even though he had already been around for a number of years his songs were still as sharp and clear as they were originally sung ! His live performance was as vibrant and stimulating as his songs are, and his collection of guitars, including his electric violin, are an incredible accumulation of style and power. My only regret was that at this particular showing the one song I wanted to hear "Bye Bye Love" he didn't get to :-(
which is a bummer because I was trying to tell a girl I met there that she knew one his songs, that being bye bye love, and he didnt sing it !
She must have lived in a hole though cuz she hadn't heard mercury blues either ! So thats my 2 cents thanks for listening!

David Lindley makes everybody smile........2001-01-02
My first experience with David Lindley was about fifteen years ago in San Diego. My cousin and I drove to Solana Beach and saw him at the Belly Up. He can, and does play almost anything. I guess "Brother John" is my favorite as well as "Tuberculucas and the Sinus Blues". I will see him again if I can ever escape Grover Beach.

One might assume the first album Neil Young put out upon his return to Reprise Records in 1988 after a misbegotten stint with Geffen would signal a comeback for the temporarily misplaced singer-songwriter. Actually, This Note's for You's successor, 1989's Freedom, is Young's late-'80s hallmark release. This one's the last in a series of titles from Young in the most capricious phase of a fickle career. Here he's on an Albert Collins kick, tackling blues-based tunes backed by his short-lived, horn-powered Blue Notes. While the anti-endorsement title track kicked up some dust at the time, the 10-song collection is weighed down by undistinguished, one-note workouts like "Ten Men Working," "Married Man," and "Sunny Inside" (the titles pretty much sum up the songs). Thankfully, Young returned to his own shade of blue after this curious bar-band one-off. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
Better than you may have heard.......2005-05-14
Neil Young's foray into the blues is a solid effort. Thanks to the Blue Notes, the musicianship is excellent blues playing, and not some rock n' rollers weak attempt to play the blues. This is a vastly unerrated CD, particularly by those who want to hear loud rockin' Neil or the country "Harvest" Neil forever and ever. Here Neil takes us back to the root of both types of music and shows us a real good time doing it. If you like the blues in any form don't miss this one. It has some great musical moments. Now, if only Amazon would show a little respect and list all the songs on this CD....
Play some blues, Neil.......2005-01-07
Neil Young experiments with bluesy R&B sounds a la the Stax Horns on this one. Horn charts are key components to each track but the results vary.
HIGHLIGHTS:
The title track's jab at corporate sponsorship and involvement in the music industry showcases guitarwork that's slinky and strutting. As an afterthought, Neil tosses off the best lyric in the tune by noting "I've got the real thing...", appropriating Coke's old slogan for the fadeout. "Coupe de Ville" is Neil's elegy to a failed relationship. The titular car is one of the possessions Neil still has but "if I can't have you, I don't want nothing else." A smoky jazzy sax accompaniment creates the mood along with a guitar part that sounds almost ukelele-ish at times (it works..really...) "Life in the City" turns Young's outrage to the plight of the homeless and points lyrical knives at neighbours who turn a blind eye to people sleeping on the sidewalks and families living on the freeways("Don't that trouble you, brother..don't that trouble you, pal..don't that trouble you, sister") It's punched up by horn blasts a la the JB's. The only disappointment might be the wailing trumpet at the song's close which fades out before it really cuts loose. Then again, better to leave us wanting more than to overstay your welcome. "A Married Man" trods the same path as Hall and Oates "Family Man"..the tempted hubby trying to tow the line. He tells the would be mistress that he "ain't got time to party..ain't got time for you no more..". "Sunny Inside" is a fairly bland paean to his love interest, but the track is really nice, sounding like a long lost Sam and Dave tune. The understated vocal for "Can't Believe Your Lyin' " is the closest to true blues expression. Unemployment is viewed here as a byproduct of love's failings...he loses his job because all he can think about is her infidelity. All-out blues wailer "Hey Hey" features a muted trumpet and tremeloed guitar competing with a sprightly brass part. Neil hypes his woman as the genuine article compared to the ones he "don't want around.."
LOWS:
"Ten Men Workin'" is very, well, WORKMANLIKE...the lyrics are the cliche about how "we're working hard to rock ya", sinking the song despite a pretty decent horn arrangement. "Twilight" never really picks up any steam, one of the album's duds...all mood and atmosphere, but no real fire. It's OK..but Neil's capable of much better. "One Thing" suffers the same fate.
BOTTOM LINE:
It's far from Neil's worst and has some great stuff on it, but it's not the highmark of his oeuvre either. There are just enough low points to keep me from giving it an unqualified 4 stars.
3 1/2 stars
A thankful comeback after the debacles of the 80s.......2003-07-29
After the disastrous years with Geffen, during which only "Trans" stands out as a halfway decent album and "Landing on Water" is arguably his worst effort for anyone, Young returned to Reprise, the label of all his past glories, and while this album may not be as good as "Rust Never Sleeps" or "Tonight's the Night," it is manna from heaven when compared to his four previous albums. It is a genre album, to be sure, and caps the decade when he went from country to hard rock to electronic to rockabilly to synth rock to country and finally to swing before returning to "old Neil" form with "Freedom." But "This Note's For You" stands apart from the rest of the genre stuff, like "Hawks and Doves" and "Re-Ac-Tor" did, because of the thankful quality of the songwriting (except for a few tracks) and the overall consistency of the effort. Also, the songs don't ALL SOUND THE SAME (ahem, "Landing on Water," ahem). He shifts quite nicely between upbeat, get-your-feet-a-tappin' swing to slow and moody blues. The album may not make most fan's top five lists, but this, combined with the next year's "Freedom," catapulted Young from the disastrous 1980s back into the glory of his earlier days, at a time when all but his most devoted fans had deserted him.
One of Neil Young's best.......2003-06-01
This Note's For You is one of Neil Young's best albums even if it didn't sell. This is the last of Young's experimental albums before he went back to his formula of making either largely acoustic albums or noisier but still very good albums with Crazy Horse. This is great rhythm and blues with an outstanding horn section. The title track is the best known track and it's Neil at his best as he attacks corporate sponsorship while the horn section responds after each line. The rhythm section of Rick (the bass player) Rosas and Chad Cromwell lay down a killer groove throughout the album. Other great R&B tracks include "Ten Men Workin'", "Life In The City", "Sunny Inside", and "Hey, Hey." But for all the great R&B, it's the moodier tracks that are the strongest. "Coupe De Ville", "Can't Believe Your Lyin'" and "One Thing" are very strong with "Coupe De Ville" being one of the best tracks Neil has ever recorded. Albums after this like Freedom and Harvest Moon would bring him back in the spotlight but This Note's For You is more consistent than both of them.
Neil's blues are solid but not truly moving.......2002-12-06
This disc is an interesting aside from Neil Young -- who has recorded quite a few interesting asides amid all his great work! On this one, Neil does the blues, but I would have preferred him to strip them down and make them haunting -- sort of a blues version of "Harvest," perhaps, with more acoustic layers. Instead, this is pretty slick stuff, though "Ten Men Workin' " grooves along pretty well. If you really want to hear Neil Young's blues album, that's easy: Just buy "Tonight's the Night." As he once said of one of his songs, that album is out of pitch but still in tune, as Young wears his pain on his sleeve following the death of original Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten -- and a roadie, I think, named Bruce Berry, if memory serves. Feel free to correct me on the name, but if you knock the album itself, them's fightin' words.

Like that of every rock & roll star of the '50s, Fats Domino's claim to fame was made in the singles market. In fact, Domino had been recording hit singles at Imperial for eight years before the label released his first LP in 1956. Indeed, what's most interesting about Rock and Rollin' with Fats Domino (not to be confused with its follow-up, Fats Domino Rock and Rollin'), repackaged here with his third LP, This Is Fats Domino (not to be confused with his fifth LP, This Is Fats), is that the tracks were recorded over those eight years (beginning with 1949's "The Fat Man") and yet his style never changed. Domino's hit singles can be found on My Blue Heaven. This one's for those who want to hear obscure tracks such as the original version of "Rose Mary" (written for his wife) and 1952's "Reeling and Rocking." --Bill Holdship
Customer Reviews:
Important Fats Domino Reissues.......2001-12-17
If you are a fan of New Orleans Rhythm and Blues, Fats Domino is required listening. "This is Fats Domino" was my first Fats Domino LP, so I'm biased! I'm happy to see these are coming out in their original formats.
Before these Collectibles sets came out the only way to my knowledge one could get all these songs on CD was to shell out for the Bear Family complete Fats Domino recordings "Out of New Orleans"--something I couldn't afford. The 4-CD box set that was widely available a few years back confined itself mainly to hits. But many gems were omitted, and some of those appear here. In particular, the instrumentals "Swanee River Hop," and "Fat Man's Hop" (not "Shop", as printed on the Amazon playlist) show more the extent of Fats's piano skills than most of his hit songs. Buy this CD and settle back for some REAL rock and roll!

Maryland's Danny Gatton was best known as a rockabilly cat, the man who put blistering guitar licks behind the likes of Robert Gordon, Billy Hancock and Delbert McClinton. Like his heroes Les Paul, Lenny Breau and Hank Garland, however, Gatton is both a country picker and a solid jazz man; he stole the show on a Blue Note jam session with Joshua Redman and Roy Hargrove on New York Stories in '92. Gatton kept both careers going at once; Cruisin' Deuces (1993) was a rockabilly outing, while his duet album with Philadelphia organist Joey DeFrancesco, "Relentless," is a straightahead jazz project. One pursuit reinforces the other; Gatton's jazz playing brings a harmonic sophistication to his rockabilly work, and his country experience gives his jazz solos a dramatic flair. --Geoffrey Himes

Psychobilly Rocker Meets Jazz Organ Monster.......2007-02-23
It's on the second cut, "Broadway," that Danny Gatton realizes what he's gotten into on this date. When you're Danny Gatton, you're used to blowing everybody else away. But Joey DeFrancesco wasn't being blown away by anybody, at least not that day. He takes a supercharged solo, and when Gatton gets it back, you can hear him quoting "I'm Beginning To See The Light." Oh, yeah. No cruising on this date. And, happily enough, the two of them proceed to blast through a program of jazzy blues.
It is clear from listening to this that while Gatton had amazing chops, he really wasn't a jazz player. That didn't stop him from having a whale of a time with Joey D, however. You could make an argument that this is one of the best examples of Gatton's playing, if only because DeFrancesco was such a worthy running-mate. Listen to them laughing on "Blues On The Half Shell"--they're having a great time. And if the idea of rockabilly rubbing up against jazz sounds appealing, you'll have a great time, too.

Steve Grey hit the nail on the head. Gatton was putting forth a great effort... but his unschooled approach to music is rather glaring in contrast to DeFrancesco's musical prowess. But, It sounds like they were having a great time.
DeFrancesco is so articulate... heads and shoulders above the crowd. Gatton was an icon, to a degree, but when set side by side with a great all around groove doctor... the Gatton image doesn't shine as brightly, but exudes raw energy at a very high level. I personnally think it is raw energy... but a bit unpolished.
Now... I've seen Gatton many times. I'm from DC and a musician to boot. And I love Danny's style and miss him... and understand that when he came back from California after a brief period of session work... he too, recognized his technical limits.... that said; Gatton displays a straight up, off the cuff feel for the groove... Gatton was good, very good, but there were A LOT of musicians who also were and are more polished. This release demonstrates that Danny Gatton had limits. A quick listen to a lot of Gatton material will also reveal a repetitivness that cursory examinations might miss. I'm not faulting him... but laid open with DeFrancesco... those types of limitations are evident.
For a Joey DeFrancesco release... it's great. Joey is the B3 King and proves it! With Danny it still rocks and grooves and works. I still own it and enjoy the release very much.
Just pure energy, style and licks to spare!.......2006-07-05
This is the second version of this CD I have owned I like it that much that I gave one away reluctantly to a pal in England. From the moment this album starts you know you are in for a ride, and what a ride it is. From the beauty of 'The Chess Players' to the sheer intensity of 'Gearheads' , this album just overwhelms the listener with an ever-changing palette of different sounds. Is it country? Is it Jazz, Is it Rockabilly?. This is the kind of music you can't put into a category....simple as that.
One reviewer likes Hank Garland...sure, but that is comparing apples to oranges..for a start, there is NO-ONE like Joey DeFrancesco around...and the sound that these two guys produce is totally unique....it's a pity Danny is no longer with us, another one of these collaborations would have surely been a milestone, if this isn't already.
Unbelievable.......2006-01-12
This is a fantastic set of music. You have to listen to it to believe it.
Holy Chops Batman!!!.......2005-01-20
I was a sound tech for a number of years. I used to have this CD in my intermission rotation. No matter what genre of music the audience came to see, they were all blown away by the smokin' chops displayed by both musicians on this disc.
