4 out of 5 stars Wrongs righted.......2007-05-27

There have been compilations before of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, the band he formed after leaving John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, but this latest one puts right most of the wrongs and omissions of those.
Everything you expect is here including Oh Well Parts 1 & 2 in its full 9 minute glory and without fading out in the middle, where you had to turn over the single, as previous collected versions had; and the previously unreleased US Version of Need Your Love So Bad, which is a superb extended six minute piece, with strings arranged by Mickey Baker (who played guitar on Little Willie John's original). Stop Messin' Round was on the flipside of Need Your Love So Bad, but it is here in the slighter shorter version used on the album Mr. Wonderful.
The towering magnificence of The Green Manalishi is also re-established by its inclusion. The compilation ends with a token track by Chicken Shack, because of Christine McVie's involvement with the band, and the then-recent hit remix of Albatross by Chris Coco, both of which I could have done without in this particular context, perhaps replaced by their first single, Rambling Pony/I Believe My Time Ain't Long.

4 out of 5 stars wow...thorough retrospective...........2007-01-12

considering Manfred Mann was much more of a chart success in the UK, this collection has all the hits a US audience will ever need, including Do Wah Diddy, The Mighty Quinn, and the full length 7 minute cut of Blinded by the Light. It also has some of the more minor radio hits of the late 70s and early 80s by the band, including Runner--which is, surprisingly, an edit that is a minute shorter than the LP version. The hard to come by Lies (through the 80s) is here as well. The only glaring omission is the song Make the World Go Round, another of his pseudo-synthpop tracks from the 80s era of music. While most of the music is broken into separate discs, 60s on CD 1, 70-80s on disc 2, there are also some odd newer recordings, like a 1997 cover of the new wave track "Pleasure and Pain," originally recorded by the Divinyls in the early 80s.

The mastering is excellent--but there are absolutely NO liner notes past the general track information. You'd think with such a career spanning set there would be some brief history inside.

3 out of 5 stars Memory is merciful.......2006-11-06

Had a few Budgie records in my collection when I grew up. No when I listen to them 25 years (or so) later it's not that good anymore. "Parents" is worth to move to your iPod though.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best the "The Best Of".......2003-01-22

This title is one of the best the "The Best Of" compilations I've ever heard. I own other "best of" CDs but they usually deliver the commercial songs of the band or artist. I don't really know if it's due to the fact that Budgie was not a commercial blast, but this CD shows the essence of the band and is certainly a very good acquisition for anyone who likes true hard rock / heavy metal.

5 out of 5 stars Live at the rockpile.......2002-01-09

Ive been working in the entertainment business for year's(live sound)and had the extreme pleasure of working with budgie back in the 70's.the best of budgie disc is a great representation of songs they wre playing then.THIS BAND is straight ahead no frill's kick [butt] rock at it's finest, and this disc showcases there talent nicely.

...n fan forever

4 out of 5 stars An excellent intro to Budgie's output.......1999-08-07

They may not have been Zeppelin, but they could rock! This album is a good overview of the three albums it covers, but to really appreciate Budgie at their raw, rockin' best, you should get the first, eponymous album - it's basic and brilliant! That said, you should BUY THIS NOW!!

2 out of 5 stars OVER AND OVER AGAIN.......1999-04-21

Boring and sundry, this lazy triad ripped off everyone from Zepplien to Big Star, and did so without even a modicum of success. Tim thought it was the greatest music ever, and he thought he was the greatest lover ever. Nothing cold ever be further from the truth! I hate you! And you owe me sixty dollars idiot!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Masterpiece! .......2004-12-28

Ah, the youth of today. Or shall we say of the 80's when Musical Youth first hit the scene. Five Jamaican born lads fresh from Birmingham, England released what would be known as their biggest hit with 'Pass the Dutchie' in early 1982. Highly regarded as one hit wonders, this disc proves doubters wrong. Musical Youth were talented musicians who never fully got the credit and recognition they so rightly deserved. Part of that was due to their record company, poor management and well, youth. This disc contains such uptempo hits such as 'Pass the Dutchie', 'Youth of Today' and 'Heartbreaker'. Also included is a duet with Donna Summer and a remix to 'Pass the Dutchie'. This is a must have for die hard fans and reggae fans worldwide.

5 out of 5 stars Still great music!.......2004-12-09

Yes, I'm still a fan of Musical Youth. People who own this album will agree that this music can only give you good times. It's cheerful and happy music by five boys who were very talented musicians. This album proves that their career was way too short. You will of course find the worldwide smash hit "Pass The Dutchie" on this cd, as well as a remix from 1994 that's completely overflowing. But you'll also find other great tracks like "The Youth Of Today", "16" and the duet with Donna Summer "Unconditional Love". If you like reggae and don't mind it a bit poppy, you'll definitely like this!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Story So far..........2007-07-05

One of those great, but almost unnoticed NWOBHM bands that couldn't break into the spotlight like Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Diamond Head or Judas Priest. They were, however, one of the better bands in the late 70's and 80's if you liked good hard rock. Tygers of Pan Tang were a blend of heavy riffs, power pop, some blues, and straight forward almost no gimmicks rock. Whether the guitarist was Robb Weir or John Sykes [Whitesnake/Blue Murder/Thin Lizzy] the guitar licks were sensational, particularly with both guitarists after their debut album Wild Cat. These guys went head to head with Samson, Saxon and other bands in the revival that brought Heavy Metal to the forefront of the music industry in the 80's. Some great and quite different sounds on this disc include Love Potion #9, Rendezvouz, Hellbound, Silver & Gold, and Danger in Paradise. If you are already familiar with the Tygers then you may want to move on to The Cage, Spellbound, Crazy Nights and Wild Cat [listed in the order that I like them]. This disc spans the years with MCA and their single that got them that contract Don't Touch Me There. For the price this is an exceptional disc that will let you know if you need to search out the other masterpieces from this truely exceptional band

4 out of 5 stars Breaking the vault into bits.......2004-12-13

Do yourself a favor - This anthology is available as a double disc version. More songs, more comprehensive and a better value. Get that one instead.

The double disc best of is like having a Def Lep super hits jukebox. Thirty four tracks, rather neatly divided into two discs, packed to the gills and a nifty liner book with band members commenting on the songs (personal favorite, "Slang" was about phone sex!). This twin CD renders the old "Vault" superfluous.

I have no problems with the songs being inconsequentially listed. I don't want a history lesson, I want to rock. By opening the first disc with the still amazing "Pour Some Sugar On Me," you're put on notice that the music is out to party you hearty.

This set leans more to the pop hit sound that was exemplified by "Pyromania" and "Hysteria." It also leans heavily on those titles; since songs from two albums comprise half of the CD. But you also get "Bringing On The Heartbreak," the power ballad that put "High and Dry" over the top, and their killer cover of Sweet's "Action" from the odds and ends "Retro-Active." (The harder rock and less known material comes forth on disc two of the double set. Disc Two is also the source of this collection's sole new song, a rather subdued but still distinctly Def cover of The Kinks' "Waterloo Sunset.")

The liner notes promise a covers album in 2005, and given their choice of influences (Kinks and Sweet...strange roots, guys!) I am very interested to see how Def Leppard enters middle age.

3 out of 5 stars Def Leppard tries to make a better compilation..........2004-11-15

Super Vault (2004.) Def Leppard's second hits compilation.

[Let me start this review by saying that you will NOT find a bigger Def Leppard fan than myself - THAT'S the reason I'm being so harsh in this review in some areas.]

Def Leppard was one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time - in the eighties and early nineties, that is. The group's style of pop-flavored hard rock was tough to match, and it seemed that the group could do no wrong... until the mid-nineties. The group eventually abandoned their metal roots, becoming a POP BAND. The once-great band had finally fallen. It was in 1995 that they released their first hits compilation, Vault, which failed terribly on many levels - the songs were not in order, the tracklist overemphasized some albums and underemphasized others, too many songs were from the later (and less good years), and so forth. Now in 2004, in an attempt to recapture some of their former glory (ha ha ha), the band has released a second hits compilation - the dual-disc Super Vault. Is this an improvement over the old package, or is it another dismal failure? Read on to find out.

PROS:
-IN TERMS OF THE SHEER VARIETY OF MATERIAL REPRESENTED HERE, THIS COMPILATION PUTS THE OLD ONE TO SHAME. The old compilation only covered 1981-1995, and this one covers 1980-2004! That one had fifteen tracks, and this one has thirty-four - nineteen more! If you're gonna get one of the compilations, this is the obvious choice.
-IF IT WAS A BIG HIT, IT'S HERE. Def Leppard had no shortage of hits, and they're all here. Many of them missed a slot on the original Vault, and many of those "deprived" hits get their proper respects here.
-LOTS OF UNDERRATED SONGS. One thing I dissed the original Vault for is its lack of material from the earlier albums. This album somewhat succeeds at correcting this flaw. Many tracks from High 'N' Dry and Pyromania that were never hits are on here - and they deserve to be. It surprised the hell out of me (in a GOOD way) that the band chose to put Die Hard The Hunter on here!
-YOU GET A NEW SONG! The compilation features the previously unreleased track - Waterloo Sunset.

CONS:
-WHY ARE THERE ONLY TWO TRACKS FROM THE BAND'S DEBUT ALBUM, ON THROUGH THE NIGHT!? Lack of tracks from this album was my biggest complaint with the original Vault (that one had NO songs from this album), and I can't believe the band made the same mistake twice. The omission of Hello America is unforgivable. And what about Sorrow Is A Woman, When The Walls Came Tumbling Down, and The Overture? For shame, Def Leppard.
-THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE FOR THE SONGS NOT BEING IN THE ORIGNAL RELEASE ORDER! Yet another mistake made on the original Vault that wasn't corrected here. This makes for a very awkward listen that is bound to confuse fans new to the band.
-NONE OF THE BAND'S PRE-ALBUM MATERIAL CAN BE FOUND HERE. This sucks, since none of this material has ever been officially released on CD (The Def Leppard EP, for example.) The original version of Ride Into The Sun would have been a nice track to put on here.
-TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON THE POP YEARS. I'm glad the CD focuses on the rock years, but there are too many junk tracks from the band's pop period. How the hell could they put Now on here instead of Comin' Under Fire? Even with all the emphasis on the pop years, one major pop hit from the nineties is missing - All I Want Is Everything. Why?
-THE UNRELEASED SONG IS A MONEYMAKING PLOY. Every band does this to sell their hits compilations, so that people who own most of this material will be shelling over cash for the sake of a single track. It should have just been released as a single.
-WHY RELEASE A NEW COMPILATION INSTEAD OF A BOX SET? The band desperately needs to release all of their albums together in a box set, with rarities as bonuses. Doing that would have been a much smarter move than releasing this compilation, and it would have made the band more money.

OVERALL:
This compilation is a major step up from the original Vault - but sadly, it ends up failing in most of the same areas that that compilation did. Your best bet would be to get all of the band's albums (start with Pyromania and Hysteria.) No compilation will ever truly do this band justice.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible set of tracks.......2004-11-11

Once again, the def rules. All my favorite tracks appear in this collection. The recording is outstanding. I noticed diverse details in the songs which I have never heard. 5 out of 5 stars Musical Youth at their best.......2004-07-17

I love this album, but then: I was a Musical Youth fan since 1982's "Pass The Dutchie" and have remained a fan ever since. I doubt that you could call this 'The Best Of' Musical Youth, as they made some really good tracks that are only on their studio albums and singles (B-sides!), but this definitely IS the collection of all tracks that have been singles (A-sides). This one is practically the same as "Maximum Volune: The Best Of Musical Youth", except is has different liner notes and leaves out the unnecessary 1995 remix of "Dutchie". To conclude: this is a great item for everyone that loves "Pass The Dutchie" or anything else by MY and an addition to the collectors' collection, but wasn't necessary to be released since Universal releases "Maximum Volume" AND One Way released "Anthology".

3 out of 5 stars More Like Half And Half.......2007-05-27

If, in 1968, you'd predicted which rock stars of the day would survive, much less age well, Eric Clapton would most likely have been at the bottom of your list, had he made the list at all. That was the year I saw Cream perform, and while the show was spellbinding, the cast of characters was cadaverous. To be fair, at the time it was considered chic for rock stars to look like they were homeless, hadn't bathed in months, and subsisted on a steady diet of Mountain Dew and candy bars. Even by these low standards, Cream presented on-stage mayhem that only seemed possible through a barely managed tripartite psychosis and amphetamines.

A lot of rockers have "gone to France" since then, or worse, become grotesque caricatures of themselves. Some left the business altogether - Arthur Brown was last seen painting houses on Cape Cod. But the ironically nicknamed "Slowhand" is alive and well, having evolved as a player while still staying true to his blues roots. An amazing achievement. He even looks healthy. I saw him a year ago on a double bill with Robert Cray, (who simply burned the house down), and he still had the bite I noticed first on Stepping Out, which appears on the John Mayall album that introduced Eric Clapton. He also had most of the legendary speed.

What this longevity has meant is that there's always another crop of sprouts introduced to EC. The enterprising ones, who've heard that he lays claim to the title of "best rock guitarist ever," may follow the string to see where it leads, and it leads of course, to Cream, the first "super" group. Cream's tenure was brief, but its impact was immense. (Led Zeppelin, for example, got their entire act from Cream. Clapton was almost tapped to replace John Lennon in the Beatles.) Ginger Baker, drums, was the senior member who actually organized the group. Jack Bruce, a musical vunderkind, was the genius behind the group's success, as well as being its voice.

For listeners interested in skimming the surface, this CD is a great place to start. Crossroads, Strange Brew, and Born Under A Bad Sign are mandatory listening. (Sunshine Of Your Love - a tired hit - is obligatory.) There's another Best Of CD available, and while it has more tracks, the selection is not that much better. Any of the 4 original Cream CDs are worth owning, (Fresh Cream, Disraeli Gears, Wheels Of Fire, Goodbye). The listener new to this material will also want to check out Blind Faith. But of all the choices, I would recommend avoiding the Best Of route and going straight to Goodbye. Half live and half studio, Goodbye is Cream at their absolute best, the live tracks in particular are incendiary.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band.......2007-04-22

This band had a unique sound.I originaly got into this band because Kiss always mentioned this band as one of their favorite bands. As i am a huge Kiss fan,i am curious at time to listen to their musical origins.
I knew Sunshine of your love and White Room. But the rest were not known at all to me.So i decided to get a copy of their best.
Man i was not disappointed.Got right into it and couldnt stop playing it.Some songs seem to be addictive, probably recorded them on tapes made out of hippy weed.
This collection is a must for fans of Clapton, Bruce, and Baker and the great rock of the late 60s. .Great stuff this, and i reccommend this band.

3 out of 5 stars Decent, but now obselete.......2006-02-26

The one-disc, twenty-track Best of Cream has officially rendered all other Cream collections obselete. And this is no exception. Though this is a good bunch of tracks, the one-disc collection is so much better. This reminds me of a Jimi Hendrix compilation entitled Smash Hits: probably worked in its day, but is now just about useless. Nice cover photo, though.

5 out of 5 stars SKIMMING THE CREAM.......2005-12-20

STRANGE BREW-THE VERY BEST OF CREAM: Like Eric Clapton's previous group the Yardbirds, power trio Cream introduced millions of rock fans to the blues, in this instance via the most contorted, "jam packed" interpretations of Robert Johnson and Albert King ever channeled through a psychedelic wah-wah pedal. The band boasted Jack Bruce's triple threat bass/harp/vocal prowess, Ginger Baker's jazz-tinged skin stroking, and Clapton's "Guitar God" pyrotechnics, and Cream's originals (WHITE ROOM, SUNSHINE OF YOUR LOVE, BADGE, etc.) were on a par with their mentors' compositions. Not surprisingly, it was far too much talent to contain under one roof and they imploded after two short years. What's left behind is this stunning (albeit crimanlly brief) account of a band that actually lived up to all that "supergroup" hype (and how often does THAT happen?) RATING: FIVE SPOONFULS

5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection of Cream.......2005-08-29

This is the best of the best by Cream. There are no bad songs on this album. It starts with "Badge", written by Eric Clapton and Beatle George Harrison, which is a very good song. Next is the classic song "Sunshine of Your Love", the song that got me hooked on Cream, an excellent song and you should be ashamed of yourself if you don't like it. Next comes "Crossroads", one of my personal favorites, is the classic Robert Johnson blues song, with Eric Clapton on lead vocals. Next is "White Room", which is a very good song and the other song that got me hooked on Cream. "Born Under a Bad Sign" comes next. It is a great bluesy song about bad luck. Next comes "SWLABR", which is a good rock 'n' roll song. Next is "Strange Brew" which is also a good song. Next is "Anyone for Tennis?" which is a nice song on the slower side. "I Feel Free" is a really good song and another one of my personal favorites. "Politician" is another bluesy song about being a Political person. Then we have "Tales of Brave Ulysees", which is a great rocking song. Lastly is the bluesy "Spoonful" which is the longest song on the CD running at 6:29.

Overall this is a great album and i reccomend to anyone who likes Cream. For beginners, start with this, the newer "Very Best of Cream", or "Disraeli Gears"

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2007-04-05

This Dusty Springfield collection gives a great overview of the finest moments in Dusty Springfied's long recording career. From the early Sprigfields track "Island of Dreams" till the 1990 track "Reputation". Logically main focus is on her greatest period from middle 60's till early 70's when she scored several top-ten hits all of which are included here.

Among the lesser known tracks are the fine "Dusty in Memphis" outtake "You've Got a Friend" and a rare live recording of "Quiet Please, There's a Lady on Stage".

Her hit with the Pet Shop Boys "What Have I Done to Deserve This" is also included. All in all a great and highly recommendable collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Dusty Springfield Album You'll Ever Need.......2006-12-03

This is the compilation to end all compilations! Includes her signature classics, "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me," "Son Of A Preacher Man," "The Look Of Love," and "I Only Want to Be With You." But there's much, much more to Dusty. She put her timeless spin on so many hits of the rock era, one would think the songs were written for her. Just listen to her take on "Anyone Who Had A Heart," "You've Got A Friend," "This Girl's In Love With You," "Close To You," "Goin' Back," "If You Go Away," "You Don't Own Me," "Piece Of My Heart," "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," "Make It With You," and "Oh No, Not My Baby." All were made hits by other artists, but listening to them on this compilation will make you forget the original recordings. There's so much more to this collection than her hits and covers. It spans 4 decades of her career, and closes out with her hits with the Pet Shop Boys, "What Have I Done To Deserve This," and "In Private." Look no further, this is a great greatest hits collection. She is simply sublime.
