Amazon.com essential recording

It may not have been the first rock opera (the Who's Tommy was released in 1969), but Jesus Christ Superstar was a legendary album long before it hit the stage, thanks to Tim Rice's compelling book and lyrics combined with Andrew Lloyd Webber's irresistible music. Telling the story of the last days of Christ from the point of view of Judas (Murray Head), the still-unmatched original cast also stars Deep Purple's Ian Gillan as Jesus and Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene, the role she made into a career (with a cameo on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack). Decades later, such songs as "Superstar," "I Don't Know How to Love Him," "Heaven on Their Minds," and "Everything's Alright" still retain their extraordinary power. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beyond doubt the best JC Superstar.......2007-06-09

I have as many as four versions of Lloyd-Webber's and Tim Rice's legendary masterpiece and this is the best one by far. Ian Gillan's performance is absolutely fantastic. Besides the process of remastering has been quite successful considering the fine sound one can appreciate listening to this 2 cd set. A beautiful libretto with full lyrics is also included. If I had to choose one single cast I would definitely keep this one. Well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars If exploring this opera rock- then this is the classical.......2007-05-14

I just saw the performance being done here in caracas, full orchestrated and in spanish.. surprisingly good..

Though not as impressed as I was when I saw the movie in my 20's.. what always stayed in my mind was the inerpretation of the original LP.. the dispair and intensity of judas in "Dammned for all time" its just too much... Ian Gilla's interpretation on getsamni is unique.. yet I think this is the only song that is best sang in the movie.

5 out of 5 stars original Jesus Christ Superstar with Ian Gillan.......2007-05-12

It had been years since I listened to this album and I was very pleased. It still holds up in every way. The music is rockin and the vocals from Ian are amazing. I wish they would have used him in the movie because Ted doesn't come close.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!.......2007-05-07

I only wish the folks that put out the CD of the '73 movie had been as diligent to put out such a superior product! There is not ONE THING wrong with this CD, but I still find myself listening to Ted Neeley's version, tho it is harder to sing along to and sounds like they're singing in a tin can!
Ian Gillan is/was an amazing talent! This CD is a must-have for all JCS fans!

5 out of 5 stars JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, DID YOU KNOW THIS SHOW WOULD GO SO FAR?.......2007-04-23

From the stirring majesty of it's main musical theme, (Je-sus Christ, Su-per-star), to the pop perfect song craft of it's light heart, (King Herod's Song, Everything's Alright), and the deep drama of it's darkest moments, (Damned For All Time/Blood Money, Trial Before Pilate), JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR remains a pop music masterpiece. Andrew Lloyd Webber, (composer), and Tim Rice, (lyricist), successfully, and respectfully turn religion into a modernist cultural celebration by fusing rock music elements, traditional opera, and a host of other musical styles, (Dixieland, Black Gospel, Folk), into the story of Christ, surmounting to a genuinely dramatic and involving opera, with vocal performances so realized, it is as if the listener is seeing as well as hearing. The guitar work here is simply amazing; the reverberating drone of the opening chords, angry accompaniment to full orchestra, solo bits and pieces bridging sequences and moods powerfully; this cutting electric gee-tar fits in quite snugly with traditional orchestra. Horns blast, blare, go funk, and celestial, and piano leads you through some of the most catchy pop ditties of the 20th Century. Strings swell into emotional climax, and vocal chorus shifts from adoring masses of angelic sentiment to vengeful voices of damnation and threats,(crucify him!). It's a powerhouse piece of music. Mind you, this is a secular story of Christ, quite scriptual, minus the Resurrection, with witty lyrics and tragic human pathos, (Jesus' weakness and doubt, Judas' suicide), that gives as much reverence to the historic man as it does the spiritual. I've never seen the staged show, but it would have trouble competing with the musical theatre of my imagination that this recording offers. Interesting to note; the Pope of the years Jesus Christ Superstar was first released, periodically played the entire opera on the official Vatican radio network. I guess he had good taste in music.

5 out of 5 stars something to have.......2007-03-14

These CD's are filled with all the awesome relaxing songs for the evening when you need it. It is just one of those must have items in your CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music.......2007-02-19

This album was a "try and see" purchase but I love it. It makes great dinner music, great music to drift off to sleep with, or just nice background filler during social events needing a softer tone. It is not all solo piano music if that s what you are after; the other instruments blend very well however and don't challenge the piano playing. It is a piano album after all!

5 out of 5 stars buy now.......2006-09-01

Want to know why I think the piano is the best musical instrument ever invented? Because no matter how the piano is played, it will always sound good. Whether the music is fast, slow, quiet or loud, it ALWAYS delivers with an appealing sound. This is something you need to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2006-02-22

This is a beautiful calming cd. The playing is excellent and the pieces are well chosen.

5 out of 5 stars Aesthetically Pleasing.......2005-09-14

I simply love piano music. If you're looking to relax, enjoy a peaceful time, then you must check out this album. If you truly enjoy piano music, this album is by far one of the best you can purchase.

As it says....it is the "Most Relaxing Piano Album in the World...Ever..." Well, I haven't listened to all piano albums in the world, but I don't need to, this one is just perfect for me, and I think you will agree!

I would say the pianists' are extremely accomplished. At times, I would admit-it's a bit 'spine tingling'!

Here are three dozen pieces of music, all played by Yo-Yo Ma, culled from his extensive discography. Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. This collection is a doozy--it is truly "essential." --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars pure genius.......2007-05-21

No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection

4 out of 5 stars Another great Yo-Yo Disc.......2007-05-15

The set-up with the classical pieces on the first disc and the other on the second is excellent.

3 out of 5 stars first disc great- second a flop.......2007-04-12

the first disc is awesome. the second disc is weird and boring.

5 out of 5 stars Encore.......2007-03-31

Incredible. My young cellist (son) loves it. Beautiful music. The album is well organized and each song transitions nicely.

5 out of 5 stars The Versatile Yo-Yo Ma.......2007-03-29

I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

This 1974 Norman Jewison film may have been a critical misstep, but some fans actually preferred it to Broadway's rock spectacle. The thing is, Jesus Christ Superstar was first introduced as a two-disc rock opera, not unlike the Who's Tommy, as it even scored several Top 40 hits. While no set matches the original, it's still hard to go wrong with the music, no matter what the source. This also includes the pretty "Could We Start Again, Please," composed for the stage version, and sung here by the original LP's Mary Magdalene, Yvonne Elliman. Ted Neely (Jesus) and Carl Anderson (Judas), meanwhile, have spent two decades on the road, recreating their roles night after night, although they have to now be at least two decades older than Jesus was at the Crucifixion. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars Jesus Christ Superstar.......2007-07-09

The first time I heard the music was watching the movie when it first came out. I was on a submarine transiting from Faslane, Scotland to Halifax, Nova Scotia for a liberty rest after a Northern Atlantic patrol.
We (the crew) almost wore the sprockets off the 16mm version copy. The music has always hummed in my memory, and many times I have found myself humming or whistling the refrain. Now with todays technology I really can get it going.

5 out of 5 stars Webber at one of his best.......2007-03-14

This CD is outstanding. I have seen the movie, the play and totally enjoy the soundtrack. It's music that you really "feel". Truly, Andrew Lloyd Webber at one of his best!!

5 out of 5 stars Judas Iscariot a Cool Guy Afterall .......2006-10-30

I love this soundtrack. Carl Anderson's amazing performance as Judas is the driving force behind this recording. Ted Neeley provides a good voice and plays Jesus Christ well and I especially enjoy Barry Dennen's Pilate. Although most of the tracks are great, standouts include "Heaven on Their Minds," "Simon Zealotes," "Damned for All Time / Blood Money," "Gethsemane (I Only Want to Say)," "King Herod's Song," and "Superstar."

I also reviewed the film that accompanies this soundtrack and in that review I avoided talking about the storytelling but promised to focus on it in this review of the soundtrack. The first reason I fell in love with this retelling of the Jesus Christ mythology was the dramatic shift in focus and interpretation. As I mentioned in my review of the film I love how the Jewish priests are given more of a voice and that there is some significance placed on the Roman occupation of the Jewish people. I feel like too often Christians don't consider the historical context of their mythology and that there is avoidance of the social and political climate during the period that Jesus was said to have lived.

The other major departure from Christian cannon that I appreciated was the deliberate un-vilifying of Judas Iscariot. Although less convenient for zealous fanatics, this version of the myth is much more compelling. Even though the Gospel of Judas was not in the public mind at the time and it is unlikely that Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Weber had it in mind its recently published translation helps prop up some of the sentiment between Jesus and Judas in this retelling. However, that is where the similarities end between the ancient Gnostic text and this pseudo-psychedelic reshaping of Christian mythology. I do think that this interpretation attempts to make the story more compelling rather than relying on a hodge-podging of standard hero stories as the original does. Carl Anderson performs beautifully under this difficult task--he presents a Judas that is not a sinning thief who sells Jesus out for money but a devout right-hand man who is forced (after much soul-searching) to turn in his mentor to save the cause and to attempt to prevent harm to Jesus. After he sees what his actions have caused for Jesus he is tormented and takes his own life in the midst of feelings of being used and betrayed by God and Jesus himself.

This is definitely a soundtrack that is tied to the time period in which it was released but I find that to be one of its charms. As an example of this, a friend of mine who recently saw this wondered if they had to give back the Batman theme song. I find the music and the energy that it infuses into this very political version of the Jesus myth very enjoyable. Definitely worth many many listens.

5 out of 5 stars JC SUPES soundtrack : the Ultimate.......2006-04-25

Originally issued in 1970 packaged as a double Lp Concept album with Deep Purple's Ian Gillan as Christ back in the days of the short-lived Rock Opera genre -- Jesus Christ Superstar was intially held as a musical play out of compromise and fear from sensoral scrutiny by its writers Timothy Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, as in its stead they opted to issue it on a 2 disc set of vinyl platters thus - until the time when it is finally made into a musical play in London the following year.

This movie soundtrack for the film rendition directed by Norman Jewison comes as the definitive and the most complete version of this work from the songwriting team of Webber and Rice.

Depicting the last seven days of Christ - of all musicals, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR comes as the most impressive, given that not a line from its narrative are spoken, but are all (mark this) SANG! And are not only sang - but each musical piece which consisted this work from Rice and Webber comes as one of the most melodic work that are ever written for any musical, that it even gave the impression for every track within as songs that could stand on their own. This work kind of mixed elements from the lost genre of radio dramas, classical music, rock, and the bravado of broadway musicals all wrapped up and jumbled collectively in one complete package - hearken it is both a concept album and a movie soundtrack all in one.

JCS the motion picture soundtrack also contains an impressive array of musical performances by its (albeit unsung) sessionist players - indeed it contains one of the best bass lines ever recorded that could be heard on the track wherein Ciaphas and Annas the chief high priests are having their discussion about Jesus - the track "Then We Are Decided", which is an exclusive portion found in the soundtrack. Also included is the theme song of the musical "Could We Start Again Please" which never appeared until the Original London Cast rendition came up with the song's first appearance - that presents an intermissionary(sic) segment of sorts having Mary Magdalene and Peter with the Disciples plead the song to Jesus, as a means to give further amplification about the Opera's whole thematical point, or idea that is, in this regard of its lyricist Tim Rice, that comes as more of a theoretical thought regarding the whole matter of Christ's message of coming down here on earth.

Appearing in this third and best version of the rock opera musical are some of its cast from the original 1970 album as well: Yvonne Elliman playing the part of Mary Magdalene, and Barry Dennen who've made several movie appearances lately, such as the praying priest in the James Cameron flick TITANIC - playing the role of Pilate. The appearances of Carl Anderson as Judas Iscariot along with its entire cast/players comes as perfect in every sense of the word for all the versions that are ever assembled for this musical - most notably, Ted Neely - whose voice effectively gives a very distinguishable character to the role on playing the part of Jesus; eventually Neely appeared as a guest back-up vocalist on the song "Run To The End Of The Highway" for the late Christian Artist Keith Green's final LP, JESUS COMMANDS US TO GO, with Green's wife Melody.

Quite ironically, the musical being criticized by certain religious circles, and indeed somewhat profane at certain respect with its unconventional approach of depicting the last days of Christ - many among its cast who participated in this musical throughout its various incarnations actually became 'christians' later on in their career, such as Jeff Fenholt who played the role of Christ in the original London cast rendition, and released several albums under the 'Christian' label.

Also, a little controversy is identified in particular to this movie soundtrack recording that infers certain "allegations" to the phenomenon of backward messages called 'backmasking', as cited within the songs "I Dont Know How To Love Him", "Getsemane (I Only Want To Say)", "Could We Start Again Please", "Judas' Death", and "Trail Before Pilate".

However, upon its stature and composure - JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR is generally a phenomenal piece in the history of the whole spectrum of musical genres in its entirety.

Nothing short of being monumental, I guess this is the one album that best defines a record album art-ifact.

An absolute classic.

It is not possible to fit 36 Bach masterpieces on two CDs, so what Essential Bach does is present individual movements from across a range of the composer's work. The anthology is clearly aimed at the newcomer, and the absence of booklet notes to put the music in context is disappointing. We are only given titles, performers, and what films the extracts have been featured in, from Rollerball to The English Patient.

On the plus side, most if not all of the music is instantly recognizable, by melody if not by name. Everything from the Brandenburg Concertos to "Air on a G String" to the B Minor Mass and St. Matthew Passion is represented. Performances range from 1960 to 1993, encompassing both early instrument and modern orchestra interpretations by a wide variety of forces, including Sir Neville Marriner with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and Raymond Leppard leading the English Chamber Orchestra. Given such diversity the result is unavoidably a patchwork, albeit one made from the finest materials, and as such is perhaps best treated as a sampler to aid exploration of the vast legacy of one of the very greatest composers who ever lived. --Gary S. Value and exquisite sampler of Bach on two CD's at an affordable price. Recorded by the likes primarily of Academy of the St. Martin-in-the-fields, Chicago Sympony, Boston Symphony, English Chamber Orchestra and with virtuoso performers as William Bennett, Heinz Hollinger, Pepe Romero, and Wolfgang Rubsam, one gets treated to wonderful Bach exerpts of all his fantastic breath and depth of chamber, symphony and choral works.

One will have to go to other places to find background on these marvelous compositions as the liner notes only list perfomer and date recorded.

Jesus Freak, like the 1970s phrase that it's culled from, is an oddity. Who could have ever imagined such a wonderful blend of grunge rock, rap, melodic pop, and funk? "So Help Me God" sets the tone with a wicked guitar riff that draws boundaries for the trio's magic harmonies. "What If I Stumble?" and the vastly underrated "Between You and Me" allow Michael Tait to showcase his silky smooth vocals, while "Jesus Freak" and "Mind's Eye" prove the band can change speeds and rock as hard as anyone. For good measure, they even improve upon Charlie Peacock's "In the Light." One of the best Christian CDs of the '90s. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars Jesus Freak dc Talk.......2007-05-20

Hello. About this item. It's a good album, the one I would listen to more often.

3 out of 5 stars Those were the days.......2007-05-19

I was reading this review that said something like, the sound of "Jesus Freak" is immature and un-evolved compared to the sound of the non-christian stuff out there. Well, I must say I agree. But wait, don't throw the stones yet, I'll explain.

Thing is, let's face the truth: the sub-industry called "The Christian Music Industry" is in fact about fifty years late, having truly started around the mid 80's. Of course there was a lot to find out, and in my opinion, Jesus Freak is one of the most relevant and emblematic records in the history of CCM. There is just so much experimentation, and despite it may actually be too much, it kind of feels like something was being created, and that is always refreshing. DC Talk, which started out as a rap band, started including more and more melodies in every new release, but it was Jesus Freak the one where they really made a huge turn, a turn which best feature is the increasing of Kevin Max's singing, a huge door to the exposure of this guy's awesome voice and talent.

Jesus Freak is a pretty weird mix of alternative rock, bubble-gum pop, folk, hip-hop and sometimes even a little techno. So as you can see, there isn't really an easy way to describe/define/review this album. I guess the only thing I could say for sure is, it's music you can't really read about to actually know something about it, you really just have to listen to it. There are almost no skip songs at all since pretty much every song has at least some sort of catchy hook to it, even if that's all it has to offer. I personally prefer the anonymous gems (What if I stumble?, What have we become, Mind's Eye) rather than the famous over-played pieces (Jesus Freak, Colored People, In the Light), but I guess in the end it's still enjoyable altogether. About the lyrics, well, I guess experimentation took place also in that department (for sure, some questions like 'What should we talk about?' had to be answered), for the lyrics are for the most part silly and superficial, with the exception of songs like "Mind's Eye", which still doesn't have great lyrics.

So back to the point I was trying to make at first. This record is what it is, an eclectic and colorful party of sounds that don't make a great album altogether but still have some great moments. By the time it was released, maybe it worked a little more than it does now, because listening to it today really gives away the fact that this sound is, to say the least, a little out of date. If some of us still enjoy listening to it from time to time, it probably has more to do with the love and nostalgia we feel for it than with anything else. Immature would be the perfect way to describe this and the CCM industry as well, but that doesn't take away any importance from this album.

One last thing to say: I think as songwriters, these guys really deserve recognition and kudos, at least back in these days, experimentation was the engine driving the production of "christian music". Today, even once-great bands like Third Day seem to have chosen the Steven Curtis Chapman sound because it works, and have stopped digging any deeper. Pity.

5 out of 5 stars What will people think?.......2006-08-28

When I was in high school, my dad got me "Free at Last", and I'll be blunt: I hated it! Back then I was looking for something that would not only be good, but sound good, and I was a new Christian. A few years later after I'd graduated, my best friend told me he had the latest dc Talk, "Jesus Freak". And believe you, me, I was big time like... WHO CARES! He asked me to just give it a chance, and after listening to the title track, I WANTED IT! Today? I still love it!

Yeah, the song Jesus Freak was what caught my attention. But there was more than just the mere 1 song. They asked the haunting question in track 4 with What if I Stumble? and really gets you thinking. Then they keep the ears peeled with stuff such as Day by Day, or Mind's Eye. They really get the attention, as well as the thought process going with Colored People, yet humor you in the middle with Mrs. Morgan. For a band I hated in high school, it got rocking rather quickly, and pumped up the volume in quite a few places! dc Talk is still one of the most influential bands in the Christian industry today.

So, am I missing anything? Oh yeah, if you see a Track 13 listed, it's there. Just don't hit the stop button immediately, because just when you think it is over, you have a surprise in the end.

They ultimately ask the question we all should ask ourselves if we follow Christ. That question comes in the title track, Jesus Freak, and asks a very simple, yet pointed question. It simply says near the end, "What will people think? What will people do?" Hey, if you're afraid of being persecuted a little, then leave these men alone! What will people think? I could give a rip! Jesus Christ died for me, and He lives in me. Regardless of my stumbles, He is always there to pick me up. And He LIVES!!! Rock on, dc Talk!

One of the best of all time. Every song is different and amazing. The recording quality is a tad rough, but that was the times. This is tied with Delirious's "World Service" for greatest Christian CD ever.

Getting the two most personable voices in jazz to sing an hour's worth of George Gershwin's opera Porgy & Bess (Ella doing all the female parts, Satchmo all the male) was a good idea, but not quite as great as it sounded. Armstrong savors the down-and-dirty Charlestonisms that inspired the cadences of the music and lyrics, and they fit his happy rasp like an old shoe; Fitzgerald, conversely, sounds almost prissy every time she has to sing the word "ain't," though her melodic genius gets Gershwin's bold, supple tunes over. The arrangements are full-throttle Broadway, with a few leaps into Dixieland (including some fine Armstrong trumpet solos), but the disc works best when the vocalists break character and let their jazz side out. --Douglas Wolk

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely peerless.......2006-11-17

"Porgy and Bess" has just opened (with some controversy) in London's West End, though as a musical and not as an opera as it was originally conceived. Reviews have been promising and I aim to go down and see it soon. I decided to listen to this CD to put myself in the mood. I hadn't listened to it for years and I'd completely forgotten how good it actually is. Ella's voice blends with Louis' perfectly and Russell Garcia's orchestration gives them a dreamy landscape to perform against. I have one or two other CDs by Louis and Ella but this one is by far my favourite. The CD opens with "Overture" and its orchestral performance of classics like "Summertime", "I Wants To Stay Here", "I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'" and "It Ain't Neccessarily So" set the tone nicely, leaving one ever so keen for the vocal versions. Louis Armstong has a very rough tone to his voice but the emotion he packs with it is moving, most especially on the mournful "Bess, Oh Where's My Bess?" And we get all this and Louis' wonderful trumpet playing too?

Gershwin and Gershwin must be among the top composers of the last century and this opera showcases their talents more than anything I've heard. Ella and Louis are peerless as a vocal duo and though I doubt the West End performance will capture the magic in the same way they did, I still remain very keen to go see it. Is it opera or is it a jazz performance? I don't really know. I just know that I love it. And strongly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars once-in-a-lifetime greatness.......2006-10-06

Two thousand five hundred musicians have recorded "Summertime" --- it's a classic. (I bet most Americans can name Janis Joplin and no other singer.) As for "Porgy and Bess," the folk opera from which "Summertime" springs, it's such a classic that it's hard to believe anyone ever had a harsh word to say about it.

But after its premiere in 1935, no less than Duke Ellington said, "It has grand music and a swell play, but the two didn't go together. It does not use the Negro musical idiom --- the times are here to debunk Gershwin's lampblack Negroisms."

A quarter of a century later, the producers of the film version had trouble assembling a cast. Harry Belafonte rejected their offer to play Porgy. Sidney Poitier took the part --- and wished he hadn't. Poitier later wrote that the movie insulted black people; when he chose clips of his best performances for his tribute at the American Film Institute, he picked nothing from "Porgy and Bess."

And in 1985, when Grace Bumbry was a sensation as Bess in a Metropolitan Opera production, she slammed the opera: "I thought it beneath me, I felt I had worked far too hard, that we had come far too far to have to retrogress to 1935."

All that may be. All I know is that I have, in a long life, rarely been confronted with more genius than in the Fitzgerald/Armstrong recording of "Porgy & Bess." Set aside the achievement of George and Ira Gershwin in transforming DuBose Heyward's novel into a folk opera. Let's just focus on Armstrong and Fitzgerald, who were at the peak of their popularity when this record was made in 1957.

"Summertime" --- the first song --- sets the tone. A baleful horn figure, then violins. And then Armstrong's trumpet: slow, steady, dignified. But wait --- here comes a slurred note. And a cool little improvisation. Just enough of each. Very tasty.

Fitzgerald sings a verse. She is cool and formal. A lady. Not to be taken lightly. Now it's Armstrong's turn. Tender, but let's not kid ourselves --- this is not singing as others define it. This is melodic speech: rough, gutteral. And thus he is ideally cast: His Porgy may have his charms, but he'll have to stretch to keep Bess.

And so it goes throughout the CD. Trumpet mastery --- Armstrong has dazzling control. His tone is bright, but never shrill; there's a warmth in his playing no one else could produce. And Fitzgerald is just a study in inevitability; to hear her is to wonder how anyone could sing these songs any other way.

"I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'." "Bess, You Is My Woman Now." "A Woman Is a Sometime Thing." "There's a Boat Dat's Leavin' Soon for New York." "Bess, Oh Where's My Bess?" "Oh Lawd, I'm on My Way."

All brilliantly conceived, orchestrated and recorded.

The greatest trumpet player in this history of jazz.

The father of scat singing.

The queen of the jazz vocal.

There are no-brainers, and then there is this Ella Fitzgerald-Louis Armstrong collaboration --- music that imprints on your soul.

We hope they will someday bring this beautiful story back to the stage

5 out of 5 stars Simply great.......2006-03-04

The fusion between the great two voices and the orchestra is just brilliant. Very good brass and violins that accompany Fitzeralds and Armstrongs magic voices leaves you with your mouth open.

A must have for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars powerful.......2007-05-06

This cd is incredible! standouts include average girl and clothes. Some say those 2 are cheesy, but I STRONGLY disagree. The messages of all the songs really ring true. Everyone should own this cd. Me and my friend were singing clothes in a mexican store at the top of our lungs, with NO shame. It was fun to see the faces looking at us though!

number two is also good, becouse even christians get cought up in the celebraties. But they ar'nt perfect, no one is. I like number nine becouse it's so touching and sweet. ok... so the last one is just a tad cheesy... It is still enjoyable to listen too. -vls

4 out of 5 stars A few Greatest hits.......2007-01-19

The track, "Never Alone," is the reason to buy this album- and it's worth the whole cd's expense. Several of the others are great. There are a couple that relate well to Christian teenagers as a fun idea to listen to a few times, but aren't keepers.

4 out of 5 stars One Great CD.......2007-01-18

I got this CD a few days ago and haven't stopped listening to it. In my opinion the best songs are Mirror and Never Alone. All the songs are at least worth listening to but those two are the best. It is a great CD with great messages and I enjoyed it thoroughly

5 out of 5 stars Rock on!.......2006-11-13
