Fates Warning - The Band Continues To Evolve.......2007-02-23
After the complex prog concept piece that was the bands previous album "A Pleasant Shade Of Gray", Fates Warning came back in 2000 with an album of individual songs. Augmented with former Dream Theater and current OSI keyboard man Kevin Moore the band come up with another winner of modern progressive metal. Fates warning, in my opinion, just keep getting better with age, and I think this album ranks right up with their best. The album begins and ends with a mournful guitar wail not unlike an electric foghorn. It sets the tone for the rest of the disc and concludes the proceedings in the same manner connecting the tracks in the middle with a theme of loneliness and sorrow. Yes this is a bit of a downer album lyrically, but in the case of Fates Warning this only adds to the ambience of the music. When Ray Alder sings the "I'm so tired" chorus of the song "So", the delivery is so emotional that the listener can feel the fatigue of the protagonist in the song. The centerpiece of the album is the 16 minute plus "Something From Nothing". This epic track contains everything that makes Fates Warning great both musically, vocally and lyrically. Kudos to the band for not getting stuck in a rut like many of their peers. Instead of continually recreating their patented sound the band bring in the influence of new millennium metal bands such as Tool and manage to keep things fresh and relevant. Kevin Moore's keyboards also add just the right touch and also provide a more modern touch. Listening closely you can hear many electronic noises and textures that would not be unusual to find on a modern electronica or space rock album. "Disconnected" is a great prog metal album. If you are at all a Fates fan or a fan of heavy progressive rock in general this is a great one to check out.
Seriously....the vocals ruin the whole experience....they suck.......2006-09-12
I hate to start off a review like this, but.........don't get me wrong:
The music part of this album is AWESOME! From the irratic and somewhat mathematical rhythms to the ambience of the keyboards, there is a lot to be heard on "Disconnected". The guitars provide much chops and even some amazing heavily effects sounds. Even the bass lines are somewhat decent. Overall, this would be an amazing and must have instrumental album.
The vocals, and even the lyrics are horrible and sound so amateur and lame that it ruins the experience that "Disconected" has to offer.
I am a lyric and vocal SNOB, the vocals and the lyrics have to be JUST RIGHT or I will hate them. Sorry, I know I sound like a stuck up fool, but with the amount of bands that walk this earth, one has to be really picky. Vocalists like Maynard James Keenan and Mikael Akerfelt are where its at.
Not that I would want all singers to sound like them, but at least come with something that matches the music more! The vocals somewhat match the lyrics on "Disconnected", but seem highly out of place, in my opinion.
I just cannot get over it, this singer sounds like the UBER-whine master! His voice is so grating and annoying. His lyrics are stale and cliche'd. I'm sorry to all of the fans that really like the vocals and this singer, but he really does not have that much talent. Sure, he is very emotional, but almost to the point that it adds a huge, HUGE layer of cheese to the band.
The vocals sound very much like popular 80's ballads and rock bands. Now this can be good, if your into that sort of thing, but I am not.
I do agree that the singer could be something really great, he just needs to focus, or something!
Highlights of "Disconnected" would be literally every song because there are enough change ups on every track to keep you interested, if you can get past the horrible singing.
One reviewer mentioned that they could see a Tool influence on this album. I agree, on the music side. The Rhythms have that same dis-jointed and somewhat Mathetmatical and progressive style to them. Even the guitar distortion sounds like Undertow/early Aenima guitars. The drummer is amazing, creative and highly original.
The track "Something from nothing" is probably my favorite track on "Disconnected" and my favorite Fates song all together. This song is so spaced out and filled with odd time signatures and pleases me on many levels.
The keyboards get away with being a prominent sound in the band WITHOUT sounding cheesy or horrid, they actually add a huge amount of atmosphere and bleeps and bloops to the overall sound, giving this album a kind of electronic/progressive metal sound.
I truly feel bad for giving this album a low review, but the vocals kill it, and they over power everything else on this disc, so there is NO chance of getting away from it...Hopefully this singers annoying singing style grows on me....who knows...stranger and more uncertain things have happened!
Wow, this singer sucks!
I will have to say that as of later listens, the vocals become more listenable and tolerable bumping my original review of 4 stars to 5.
One of the Best.......2006-07-11
This is definitely one of Fates Warning's better albums. A must have for any FW fan!!!
Great 21st century prog-metal.......2005-02-05
Most mainstream acts truly set the bar for music. But not in a good way, but rather a standard for other artists to try to limbo under. Thank heavens there are still groups such as Fates Warning around to satisfy demanding listeners' ears.
Many have pointed out that Matheos and Co. show a Tool influence on Disconnected, and I'll say that IS true to some extent. "Something From Nothing" wouldn't have sounded terribly out of place on 'Lateralus' (BTW, it's a great song). Of note is that Kevin Moore is on-board again, but he seems to have reinvented himself this time around. 'Disconnected' sounds less like an early Dream Theater record than the stellar 'A Pleasant Shade of Gray'.
All the while, Ray Alder continues to improve as a vocalist and Mark Zonder is, of course, nothing short a drum god (good competition for Portnoy). Supposedly, he isn't in the band anymore; he may still do studio work with them, but will not tour with them (darn).
THE REPORT CARD:
Disconnected, Pt. 1: n/a (the repeated wailing shows an overt King Crimson influence here)
One: B+ (seems to be the most accessible track here)
So: A- (great song, but somewhat sleep-inducing)
Pieces of Me: B (sludgy, distorted guitar sound; Kim Thayil would be proud)
Something From Nothing: A (BIG epic #1, somewhat trippy, lots of neat little nuances)
Still Remains: A (BIG epic #2, sort of a throwback to late 80s Fates)
Disconnected, Pt. 2: B+ (longer version of Part 1, more of that King Crimson-esque wailing)
Almost as perfect as APSOG and dangerously brilliant.......2004-12-14
A Pleasant Shade of Gray is not only Fates Warning's finest moment, but it is also one of the most amazing albums ever created. Even though Matheos spent nearly three years to follow it up with Disconnected, I didn't keep my hopes too high for their new album. It's almost impossible to recapture such a record. So Disconnected got released and I picked it up right away. The first six months I played it nearly everyday expecting it to open up or click with me, but it didn't. It had some incredibly impressive moments that left me drooling but it also had these passages that simply lost me. I kept listening to Disconnected regularly at least once or twice every month for four years and finally last summer it worked. This album is a flawless masterpiece that refuses to get old and requires multiple listens (not necessarily four years though) and once you get into it you will find yourself floored. It reaches high, almost gets to the level of APSOG, and leaves you utterly speechless. It is a brilliantly well-written and played record with lucid layers of depth that reveal themselves with each listen. Since I managed to discover the treasures it holds, I have also found a good many nuances and subtleties which I'm sure will provide years of enjoyment for me.
Only seven tracks, "Disconnected Pt.1" and "Disconnected Pt.2" being album openers and closers, this album contains some of the longest and most complex tracks Jim Matheos has ever penned. As always, his compositions are intelligent and the band behind him are equally competent. Vocalist Ray Alder once again proves to be a key element in the unique sound of this band, and he also co-wrote three songs contributing to the lyrics. It is quite hard to describe each piece on the album individually as Disconnected also, like APSOG, seems to make a unified statement with lyric heavy songs and emotionally charged instrumentation. The band's solid rhythm section, consisting of drum god Mark Zonder and Joey Vera, invests a different level of credibility to the songcraft of Jim Matheos and the trio successfully create the musical tapestry surrounding Ray Alder's vocals. Mark Zonder's odd-metered drumming once again relying heavily on intricate cymbal work is further developed by Vera's throbbing bass lines. Jim Matheos seems to experiment with his Robert Fripp influence adding more riff-based textures to his songwriting. He doesn't play any extended guitar solos, but his riffing is dense and blends nicely with the other instruments. Once again, Kevin Moore plays the keyboards (as well as piano and computer synths) and his atmospheric touch creeps into each track and gradually blankets them adding a blurry grey colour.
"One" introduces a rather accessible chorus in Fates Warning's ever-growing back catalog but quickly takes on swirling maestroms of ever shifting riff architecture by Matheos. The playing is vastly intricate yet extremely absorbing and passionate at the same time. One of the defining moments on the album is how "So" ties in with the melancholic "Pieces of Me" -- a seamless amalgamation! Zonder yet lends another of his odd-time introduction with fierce drum attacks and Alder sort of delivers random vocal melodies over the somewhat chaotic texture. Kevin Moore's aesthetics begin to come through particularly on the album's two longest tracks: "Something from Nothing" and "Still Remains" respectively. The two songs' running time takes up more than half of the album's length. Moore paints the palette of both songs with with delicate layers of atmosphere. The spooky bass intro of "Something from Nothing" fuses with Moore's introspective nature during the experimental clutter of the tune; it's a true sonic intensity. There is an impressive and busy interplay between the band members as they build a huge wall of sound that suddenly explodes into a chaotic musical array nearly after three minutes into the song. Ray Alder not only does justice to this song but he also comes up with his most haunting vocal melody to date particularly at 5:38 to 5:45. It's quite possibly the most beautiful thing he's ever done along with Parts VI-VIII on APSOG. Moore plays a recurring piano figure that constantly enters and leaves the focus of the track. The lengthy instrumental exploration characterized by Mark Zonder's sonic drum work is once again enhanced with the repeating vocal melody delivered by Ray Alder. Once the song is over after 16 minutes, you're left speechless and overwhelmed. The album closes with the second instrumental, "Disconnected Pt.2", with added textures and a few vocal samples we'd normally hear on Kevin Moore's solo project Chroma Key or Porcupine Tree's Signify. I admit Disconnected is a hard album to get into, but it is dangerously perfect and contains millions of variations and textures as major ingredients which other bands could only dream of let alone incorporate in their own songs.

greatest modern music to come out of germany - ever!.......2005-10-28
my opinion, for what it is worth - this is very innovative music and pushing the envelope when it comes to a new sound for listening public. forget about underground. i am talking about this style crossing over into mainstream and being accepted. The highlight is the songwriter/vocalist/instrumentalist Enik!! This boy is amazing. keep your eye on him and thank me for giving you the tip. He will take the media by storm. There is a full record on the way, so you won't need me to tell you how amazing Enik is. The record will do that.
so so.......2004-06-25
Take Autechre + Prefuse73 + Ming and Fs + Groove Armada and add a dash of Massive attack and you get Funkstorung. This is a sonically interesting album, highlighted by "chopping Heads" w/ Tes and the "stirring captured in tones" w/ Sarah Jay. So, why only 3 stars? One word. Enik. His vocals lyrics completely drag this album down--and unfortunately he's on the majority of the songs.
Take "like a Poet" a likable, melodic song, but with lyrics such as, "like a poet, 'cause you're a poet, you just don't know it" ruin it...way to rhyme "poet" with "poet" and then "it", spent hours pouring over your thesaurus did you, Enik?
Remove the vocals on all Enik songs and this album gets another star. Seriously, he's terrible.
The future is now........2004-06-12
The sporadic, digital sound of FUNKSTORUNG uploads you through the computer, like Tron, and converts your DNA into crunchy binary code. The beautiful thing about DISCONNECTED is that at this go, the German dynamic duo of Michael Fakesch and Chris De Luca have incorporated and highlighted an even stronger organic, melodic element to their trademark sci-fi sound. Piano, guitar, rich vocals, and traditional song structures are presented, then repackaged with twisted metal accents and effects for extra character and texture. DISCONNECTED is an eclectic album of modern folk, hip-hop, jazz, & chill-out blended and pushed through the time/space-continuum; so that the musical imbalance and juxtaposition is funky, sophisticated, at times jarring, but always inspiring. Random glitches and digital grating, like in that `Max Headroom' way, add crazy urgency to the hip-hop tracks `Chopping Heads' & `Fat Camp Feva', both featuring Tes, and `Mr. Important', featuring Rob Sonic from Sonicsum. While mellow tunes, like the slow jazz drag of `Dirt Empire' with Nils Petter Molvaer, `Sleeping Beauty' with the lovely Lou Rhodes, & `Captured Intones' sung by Sarah Jay, are all handled a bit more delicately so that the raw talent and instrumentation may shine. FUNKSTORUNG have rightly given the opportunity for Enik to be spotlighted on DISCONNECTED. Enik is featured in four tracks on the album and his colorful & sincere voice and singing style effectively reflects the distinctive tone and vibe of DISCONNECTED, as well as the abstract art design chosen for the album's cover and artwork within. Upgrade your collection and check out FUNKSTORUNG's DISCONNECTED. -- Raves.com review by ursula williams

Anyone have the NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 Cd to sell instead?.......2005-12-05
I'd RATHER have the Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 Soundtrack, a.k.a>. EA Games Trax Cd. But........if this is the Best I can get(just to get the ONLY Good song>>"Ordinary"), then I'll get THIS cd. If you LOVE the song "Ordinary" from the NFS:HP2 game, this is a start. Too bad the "instrumental" version of "Ordinary" ISN'T on this cd also. Oh well, my continued search for ALL the songs from Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 game is ON once more......
5 stars are WAY too many.......2005-05-05
The Buzzhorn is a largely unknown Milwaukee band that got some exposure by landing the song "Ordinary" on the "Need for Speed" PS2 game. The group has a muscular rock sound with dabs of grunge that occasionally sounds like Alice in Chains, Nickelback or Creed. The vocals of Ryan Mueller have somewhat of a keening whine to them at times..this may have been what kept them from breaking bigger than they did. The tendency's most noticeable on ballad "Pinned to the Ground".
Claiming this is the "rock album of the decade" though...puh-leeze. I'm not ready to go around showering accolades of "decades best" when we're only halfway through the decade as it is. This probably deserves a bit more attention than it got, but hardly a spot among the best music made so far in the 2000s.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Anti-yuppie screed "Ordinary" was well-chosen to appear in the PS2 game. It's punchy rock with a good hook. ("Life and death, the money that's left/And the vultures dive to intercept/And the friendship rolls onto its side/And you wait for it to die") "Satisfied" is probably an attack on unkind music critics ("Look around, nobody's laughing but you/Smile it off, ducking and keeping your cool") "Isn't this Great" is the sarcastic portrait of a crumbing friendship. The title track's probably the most interesting one lyrically, an attack on society as viewed through the eyes of a homeless person ("I don't believe this/My life's in a paper bag/Never trust no one")
LOWS:
The Alice in Chains resemblances might go beyond music stylings.."Come See Me" appears to be a junkie singing about heroin. ("And when I see you/I'll be sleeping on the needles/And I won't ever be the same...you decorate my soul/You set it all on fire") It's a fairly boring slow song. "Rhino" COULD be a pretty veiled metaphor about political privelege, but I suspect it's probably just intended to be an animal rights ditty ("It's a shame they can't do what other animals can do/There's animals where humans belong" seems to be a diatribe about cages/zoo animals) "Holy Man" is a self-important anthem but with nothing to say. ("Holy man, so lucky/Yet you holy man have nothing/Help them holy man/to break the locks of all their heads/Holy man, just like me")
BOTTOM LINE:
If you're an AIC or Nickelback fan, listen to the samples. If the vocals don't turn you off, You'll probably like it. At under a buck, it's a steal.
Hard Driving Harmonic Guitar Sound!.......2005-02-07
Very simply one of the best rock CD's of the decade. These guys from Milwaukee kick ass with their hard driving harmonic guitar sound. Every song on the disc are good. Best songs include Ordinary, Waste Of A Man and Machine. If you don't like rock music, don't buy this CD.
Everything a rock CD should be.......2004-06-12
It was cool to find so many good reviews of the only album of my favorite underground rock band. The Buzzhorn have one of the most original sounds that I've heard in a really long time. I first was introduced to this band when my best friend sent me "pinned to the ground" over the internet. I was so impressed that I downloaded some other tracks and eventually just went and bought the album. From the clever lyrics, pounding drums, and screaming guitars to the awesome vocals; Buzzhorn just plain kicks a$$.
==Favorite tracks==
1. To Live again - Good intro track.
2. Ordinary - Awesome song, probably my favorite.
3. Pinned to the ground (10) - Really good slow rock song, guitars are excellent.
5. Isn't this great - Another close favorite. The mini-solo in the middle of the song is really good.
6. Disconnected - Another close candidate for best song on the Album. The lyric "I don't believe this, my life's in a paper bag" is probably my favorite on the CD.
12. Holy man - Perfect type of song to end the CD. Excellent vocals.
Also, this band did have a previous unreleased album. I don't have all the songs from it but "Heavy 100" & "Down Below" are two awesome songs that I wouldn't be suprised to see on a later album.
Very nicely done........2004-05-25
Like some people who found The Buzzhorn, I found them the same exact way; by playing "Need For Speed" on PS2. I found it kind of surprising that "Ordinary" was playing in the background, but after a while it started to sound like a good "go for a drive" kind of song. That was over a year ago, and I just bought this album 3 days ago. I'm quite impressed. They have a mix of Big Wreck/Filter. Big Wreck's southern (only they're Canadian) dash, and Filter's encompassing and loud guitars; and the lead singer has the midrange octaves that Richard Patrick has for Filter. What makes me upset about this band is that they are on a HUGE record label, Atlantic; yet I never heard these guys on the air nor saw a video from them. They need to start giving other good rock bands a chance instead of taking a handful, throwing them against a wall and seeing which one sticks. They might surprise themselves how well the public could take to these guys. I sure did, but I had to find out through a video game. Overall, very well done rock record, it's just sad not too many people got to hear it

Long-lost power pop treasure.......2004-11-15
Bators made such indelible marks at the start and end of his career, with the nihilistic punk of The Dead Boys and the popular goth-rock of The Lords of the New Church, respectively, that his mid-period forays into power pop have been greatly obscured. And as this reissue of his second solo album reveals, that's a huge disservice. The Dead Boys may have been more visceral and The Lords of the New Church may have achieved more commercial acclaim, but Bators' garage-inspired power-pop is clearly the music nearest and dearest to his heart.
On preceding singles and demos Bators had covered obscure '60s classics such as The Choir's "It's Cold Outside" and The Glories' "I Stand Accused," and that sensibility melds perfectly with the band's originals, combining a dash of the Dead Boys' snotty punk energy with the power-pop sounds of late '70s bands like The Plimsouls. There are hints of New Wave, but the back-to-basics production (thanks to then-rookie Thom Wilson) and arrangements keep this from sounding dated; there's also some foreshadowing of the Lords sound (who themselves would look back with a cover of "Question of Temperature"), but, again, the roots are firmly in the '60s.
In addition to songs from Bators and band members Frank Secich, George Cabaniss and David Quinton, the album includes a rousing cover of The Electric Prunes' "Too Much To Dream Last Night" and a leering live take of The Syndicate of Sounds' "Little Girl." The Lords' fame and Dead Boys' infamy may have obscured the brilliance of Bators' middle-period garage pop, but thanks to Bomp! it's here for you to hear.
[Note to completists: Bomp's 1993 reissue appears to have a different set of bonus tracks (8 songs recorded live at the Berkeley Square) than the 2004 reissue (2 alternate takes, 1 live track, 1 instrumental, 1 prank phone call). Collect 'em both!]

temporarily disconnected.......2002-12-31
This is the best 24-7 Spyz CD that features the original
P-Fluid, Anthony, Rick and Jimi line up...
All the songs are real crunchy, except for "choose me", but
even that one has a great middle eight. Well, the re-mix
version does anyway (track 11). There are equally as good 24-7 CDs, but
this one is the very best by the original 24-7 Spyz.
If you want to turn a friend on to 24-7 Spyz, this is the CD to
use as a 'starter'. A must for the heavy metal soul.
Decent Throwback.......2002-01-11
(3-1/2 stars) Apparently there was some interest in Europe for the earlier 24-7 Spyz LPs, so they more or less went back in time, cast off vocalist Jeff Broadnax and brought back P.Fluid to throw this one together. Its often funny ("Shady girrrrrl....come out and playyy!") but sounds very much inferior, in both production and songwriting strength, after their incredible major-label debut _Strength In Numbers_ (unfortunately out of print). Still there's some excellent interplay on "Why" and "Stoner", and a decent funky instrumental "Agroovendeel" that are worth hearing, if you can sift through cruft like "Choose Me" (either version). If you liked the more early-Fishbone-like sound on _Gumbo Millenium_ and _This Is...24-7 Spyz_, rather than the more metallic sound on their later LPs, this will be right up your alley.
A classic amongst few.......1999-03-04
This totally briliant album offers heavy guitar, maximum groove, great melody and lots of humour. Honestly, what more do you need???!!!

Wait for Mr. Christopher.......2001-05-10
Hey guys this CD is tight but just a little scoop from Houston. If you like this wait for Mr. Christoper, he's the bomb. I've heard some stuff that he's done with a few of the members from the Disconnected Clique and it was tight as hell. All I can say is wait and see, if you thought this was good he will blow your mind. Holla......

Absolutely amazing.......2006-12-26
After what I believe to be their most complete piece of work Fates Warning needed a lot of work to write something equally impressive. So they worked hard and created this masterpiece. This album sounds so fresh and full of ideas that makes you forget that their previous one was one such as well. The progressive elements are shown much more intensively on this album than on APSOG instead of focusing on a concept. The songs on the album are mostly large and consist of several different ideas that never fail to keep you interesting. If you liked their previous work, this one, even though a lot different, will not dissapoint. Fates Warning is indeed a very unique band to keep releasing albums as great as this one.
A Pleasant New Release From fates warning.......2001-03-11
This is the next logical step for fates warning. After (APSoG) a break was needed indeed. To hold us over, we were treated to two live videos and the Still Life CD. On top of this was a tribute album (if you enjoyed it, pick up Spiral Arcitect's new album - they autographed mine for free). From first note to last (both the same riff) I was enthralled. "Pieces of me" stands out as does "Still Remains." A must have for fates warning fans old (Arch era) and new (Alder era). Do yourself a favor, pick up Engine, Jim Matheos "Away with Words", and "Zonder/Zimmerman proj."

Stiv Did It All Right Here.......1999-06-02
This album is a steal. Buy it and Enjoy the sounds of the evil boy
Hidden Treasure.......1999-05-24
This is an album that deserved a better fate than it received. If you know Stiv from the Dead Boy's or Lords of the New Church this is nothing like those two groups. It is essentially a power pop album. Ive heard Stiv grew up listening to 60's AM pop radio and it showes on this effort. Some of my favorite songs include Evil Boy, I Wanna Forget You..., A Million Miles Away, and the excellent cover of Too Much Too Dream. If you like Punk Rock and still enjoy some pop music then try this out. It's very different from either musical format, but that's what makes it such a gem!

Can Anyone Say, "Linkin Park?".......2006-08-08
This band just rides the coat tails of Linkin Park. It Seems like ever since the former band came out, any white boy who thought they could rap met up with a white boy who could sing, and decided to form a band.
Dont get me wrong. That's not so say that this band isnt any good. They are, just completely un-original. The only thing that really differentiated Dry Cell from Linkin Park is that the wrapped vocals are more angry and a little more harcore than their more popular contemporaries.
Amazing album.......2005-06-10
This is just an opportunity to mention that the band has NOT broken up!
Their new album will be out on Beyond Control Records at some point. In the meantime, head over to their website (...) and check out their Media section, click on audio, and you'll find a nice surprise...
Enjoy
Killer CD and very hard to find !!.......2005-04-28
Great album , too bad the original group is no longer together . I am not shure the exact reason why this cd was never officially released . Like the last reviewer said you can download some of the tracks from a website but its not like owning an original issue as thats what most if not all collectors/fans are into ! Anyway the band is awesome I think they have a style all thier own not as much sounding like Linkin Park like some others say . I personally collect music and hate to sell this cd but I have two of them . Hopefully you find this cd before someone else does (cd listed april 27th 2005 1:12 pm pacific lets see how long before someone snaches it up !
Great album, but..........2005-04-18
Please don't let people take advantage of you, do NOT pay $100 for this album. The band is giving the album away for FREE, sure there's no cover or cd, but you get all 12 tracks, plus tracks that aren't on the album which is a bonus. Here go to this website and don't be taken for a fool. http://impurvisions.com/audio.php
An Excellent c.d to me!.......2003-02-09
Every song is catchy you cant help but hum or sing along. Dry Cell is extremely talented for their young age.
Every song on the c.d. would be 10/10 9/10 or 8/10.
Under The Sun would have to be my favourite, it was the first song I heard and it has a very catchy beat.
Last Time would have to be my least favourite, its got a good beat and all its just too slow for me.
