A good, soild album.......2005-07-08
As I'm sure anyone reading these reviews knows, the Seahorses (an anagram for He Hates Roses) was the band John Squire, guitarist extrodinaire from the Stone Roses started after the Roses broke up. While this isn't near anything the Roses did, it is still a solid, enjoyable album. The rest of the band is very good, too, in my opinion. The singer has a good voice that fits the music, the bass player and drummer are both very good (I am surprised to read the reviews slagging off the rhythm section!) and Squire is Squire. While there aren't as many guitar solos from him as I'd like, his guitar work is still awesome. The best songs are I Want You To Know, 1999, Standing On Your Head, and the jaw-dropping Love is the Law. A really good album...if you're a fan of the Stone Roses or just good British guitar rock in general, check this out.
Seahorses - 'Do It Yourself' (Geffen).......2005-06-23
Apparently, this was their only album.Guitarist John Squire used to be a member of the Stone Roses.'Do It Yourself' was produced by Tony Visconti(Bowie,Thin Lizzy,T.Rex).That's ironic because the CD does employ somewhat of a '70's sound to it.I would describe the Seahorses as 'advanced serious pop'.I remember seeing their semi-outstanding video for "Love Is The Law".Other tunes I liked here on the CD release were "I Want You To Know","Round The Universe" and "Standing On Your Head".If you dig,say vintage Bad Company, you should like this disc.
Not a bad album.......2005-01-10
The Seahorses never made here in the US in a big way, but that doesn't mean that this CD doesn't deserve a listen.
I would best describe it as brit rock with a bit of classic rock influence, laced with some humourous lyrics. My favorite being: "There's no such thing as a second chance, look at Auntie George and Uncle Mabel."
Chris Helme provides solid vocals and John Squire's guitar is tight, and put together their songs are bouncy and mostly feel-good, although some are quite long.
My preferred songs: I Want You To Know, Blinded By The Sun, Love Is The Law, Love Me And Leave Me.
Ok, so they don't sound like The Stone Roses, but I don't think they are trying to. Give this CD a go if you like middle of the road rock with jamming, long songs.
Not Great But Not Terrible.......2004-10-17
This album is by no means anywhere near the brilliance of The Stone Roses, so do not listen to this album with high expectations. This is not a bad album though, with the first half being stronger than the second. It is definitely worth a listen, especially since you can pick it up for under three bucks.
Worth A Listen.......2003-03-28
Ok, this isn't a Stone Roses album. I'm sorry that they broke up but we have to face the fact. With that being said I think this album is worth buying especially since there are enough people looking to get rid of it that you can now pick it up for under a [money amount]. John Squire's workon this album is worth paying the [money amount]or less.My favorite track so far is "Round the Universe." It's a Zeppelin-influenced track with a pop feeling. On the last track, "Hello," we see vocalist Chris Helme sounding like the big Brit-pop contemporaries Travis and Coldplay. If for nothing else just get this album and enjoy Helme's voice and Squire's guitar playing.

Album Description
Quality music at a great price, this collection features 20 tracks including 'How Deep Is The Ocean', 'No Strings', 'Puttin' On The Ritz' & 'Heatwave'. The Swingles have, unusually, incorporated electric keyboards, horns and drums into their usually acappella approach, resulting in some thoroughly modern interpretations of Berlin's classics. Castle Pulse. 2003.

Doesn't work for me........2006-05-04
I LOVE the Swingle Singers. The first time I heard them sing Bach back in the 60's I was driving a car and I was so blown away that I had to pull off the road. And I LOVE Irving Berlin's music; his message is simple and direct and tuneful. And therein lies the rub. To me, the jazz vocal styles, the contemporary harmonies and the whimsical utterances of the Swingle Singers go together with Irving Berlin's music like oil and water; they just don't mix. The words and melodies are those of Irving Berlin but the end result isn't Irving Berlin. Admittedly this is one man's opinion, and others might take great pleasure in the Swingle Singers' unfailing virtuosity and inventiveness. But if you anticipate the straighforward tunes and emotional directness in Berlin's music, you are apt to be disappointed.
