Talk about high concept: this project features the house band of noted New York reggae label Easy Star covering Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in the same sequence and in recognizable but reggae fashion. Here, the All Stars turn Floyd's strangely surreal world even stranger and more surreal, adorning the English band's dark psychedelic music with slow reggae beats and head-spinning dub-style production that is both inspired and effective. "Money" opens with the sound of bong hits and coughing instead of the cash register, then grooves to a reggae beat as guitar and organ churn out the classic riff--there's even the signatory sax break in the middle. The group hits it just right on "Great Gig In The Sky," retaining the soaring gospel voice, while the remake of the chiming bells on "Time" reveals a bit of irreverent humor. Tearing away at the alienation of the original, this infusion of new personality makes it all work, elevating the album's concept from the half-baked to visionary. --Tad Hendrickson

Pink Floyd + Reggae = Very cool & clever music!.......2007-06-03
I LOVE Pink Floyd and I like Bob Marley. So for me for me this combination of musical styles really work well together. The musicians are talented and the production quality is extremely good. Really cool and VERY clever music... Check out the first part of Money.
Like some weird genre accident gone right..........2007-05-30
Covers are fun... if you're playing them, but they're not always fun to listen to. Ninety-nine percent of the time the best we get is competent imitation. Then, quite a bit later, when we're anything but expecting it, along comes that pesky one-percent.
Add to that genre hopping, a weird and treacherous enterprise. Too often does it simply fail, or worse, the effort gets consigned to parody without getting the attention it deserves. Laziness and a lack of presence notwithstanding, this is one recording that requires a bit of attention before rendering judgement.
I first read about this project when I lived overseas... and at the time, I'll be frank, it sounded half-baked. But for some reason, it was the first cd I bought when I got home in 2003.
Truth be told, I've never been more satisfied with a cover than I have with this one. It is truly remarkable that the all-stars, or anyone for that matter, could pull this off. There is reinvention on a grand scale, but also tremendous attention (and respect) paid to the original recording. To render this album in such terms reveals not just a few things between Floyd and reggae in general.
who wudda thought? but brilliant.......2007-05-22
one could cynically accuse the all stars of glomming onto one of the top-selling albums of all time for this cover album. but, in fact, the reggae-floyd marriage works beautifully and this is a nice addition to the floyd pantheon.
in fact, dark side's ambient, luscious aural landscape fits perfectly with reggae's emphasis on texture and multi-layered production. the all stars musicianship is impeccable and they add nuance and new facets to the floyd classic. try it!
Very, very good, mon........2007-04-26
I first heard Pink Floyd's DSOTM when I was 13, and it completely changed my concept of what music could be. It is, of course, a seminal recording in rock music.
So imagine my surprise when I discovered this CD. As a traditionalist and generally unforgiving when you try and alter defined classics, I was VERY skeptical. But, I love DSOTM, and I love reggae, so I thought I'd give it a try.
Wow.
It works...it really does. Absolutely true to the original while changing the feel at the same time. They have taken great care to replicate certain critical aspects of the original: Nyambingi-style drumming replaces the opening heartbeat pattern in Speak To Me perfectly, the oscillating keyboard sound during On The Run, the woman's vocal lines during Great Gig In The Sky, and the keyboard feel during Any Colour You Like.
To me, Any Colour is the standout on the entire recording. It just seems so natural with a reggae beat behind it, and the trombones that cover Gilmour's guitar parts are dead on.
The only thing I found troubling was On The Run. It slips into this heavy raggamuffin hip-hop kind of techno beat. I've since grown accustomed to it, and it is okay, but it is quite different from the rest of the recording.
This is a VERY good tribute to the original. If you like reggae and you dig the Floyd, you will appreciate this heartfelt and sincere effort at a tribute of one of the greatest recordings of all time. Well done, gents.

Bassey at her very best!.......2007-01-30
This excellent 2CD release from BGO features two Shirley Bassey albums originally released in 1974 and 1976. Both released for the first time on CD!. The first "Nobody Does It Like Me" was recorded in the USA following the popularity of Shirley's previous album and single "Never Never Never". This album was designed to place Shirley in the lucrative US adult contemporary market and results in a different sound to her UK recordings around the same period. Shirley'e voice is at its very best, and the overall production is pulled back somewhat compared with her previous UA albums. Now 30 years later, this album sounds better than ever, and listeners can't help but wonder why it wasn't a bigger success. Standout tracks include "Davy" a duet with the songs composer; Bernard Ighner and Paul Anka's "I'm Not Anyone". The album closes with Shirley's beautiful version of Stevie Wonder's "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life". Next is the album "Love, Life and Feelings" from 1976 which placed Shirley firmly back in the UK charts. This album peaked at number 13 and enjoyed a 5 week run in the charts. There is not a single track on this album that does not deserve 5 stars, but for the record you will find many songs associated with Dame Shirley that (strangely) don't appear on many compilations including, "What I Did For Love", "Born To Lose", "Natali" and "If I Never Sing Another Song". Both albums have been expertly re-mastered by the experts at BGO and have never sounded better!

Alternative Press 5 out of 5 stars
Product Description Dr. Dog has been creating music in various incarnations in their hometown of Philadelphia for nearly four years now. This five piece collective continues to push each other's creative inner selves in order to gain new musical heights while converting and gaining new fans with each passing day--proving the adage, "good things happen to good people".
"Sure to attract a rabid cult of indie-rock fans." - NEW YORK TIMES
It's easier to compare and contrast than it is to take something for face value, love it, and never let it go. Easy Beat is the debut album from Philadelphia's Dr. Dog. Fans of My Morning Jacket, Neutral Milk Hotel, and The Band should pay close attention as they cruise through the desert (at 113 mph) listening to Pet Sounds. Rarely does a record change the course of one's life ... well, until now.

maybe if i had a ball of herion in my veins this would sound better
Great Album.......2006-07-26
This is an album that requires more than one listen. They go against everything that music is today but do it in an easy laid back way. What is rare with this album is the fact that you can hear that the band is enjoying themselves and just focused on making good music. Let's be honest with ourselves and admit that no band today is completely original. Every band adopts characteristics from bands before them. If Dr. Dog chose to emulate any band they chose the best; The Beatles. There is nothing about this album that I don't absolutely love.
Think Dr. Dre meets Snoop Dawg.......2006-03-15
well ok maybe not, but I opine that all the comparisons the band receives are unfair. They are way better than the Beatles. Ok maybe still overstated. Really good album though. The drunken ending to the song "Wake Up" is enough to justify buying the album.
"We are only part of a dream"

Best of the best.......2006-01-28
Wohawo what is this. This is some F* great cd. Hearing that sound now when the bubble pop is everywhere, that's great. Good raw beat's with great rythm. I give a great prob's to Dr Dog for doing it his way, or they.
Goes Down Easy.......2005-12-07
I'm a little embarrassed that I first heard about this band on NPR (it makes me feel even older and squarer than I am!) and embarrassed, too, that I responded like a Pavlov dog to the Beatlesque surface of their sound. But after several listens, I heard a lot more going on. These are carefully crafted songs with creative parts and changes in spades, but the band's not afraid to muss up the pop perfection with rasps, distortions, howls, and lazy off-time solos that give their music more of the urgency of indie rock. They recorded Easy Beat on tape, and the production has that special warmth and sense of space you just can't get with digital. I don't picture these guys as gearheads fiddling in a studio for months to sound like "Abbey Road" (Elephant 6, anyone?). They seem more like a bunch of close, talented musicians who've played together for hours to hone their songs. The CD hasn't come out of my player for weeks, & can't wait to hear them live.

Disappointed.......2007-02-19
I was very disappointed with this CD. Dean and Frank sound drunk throughout most of the CD and the audience detracts from the songs.
If you listen to this CD without smiling, there is something wrong!.......2006-08-27
This CD is just so much fun. I'm too young to really remember the Rat Pack per se, but I remember the old movies. After purchasing a Frank Sinatra CD and just falling madly in love with the voice and the music I purchased this on a whim.
I drive along and this CD has me singing and laughing and it puts me in such a glorious mood! I wish they were still around as I would be in line at the Sands for a chance to see them.
Seperately Sammy, Frank and Deano are devine, superb, delicous. But together they are enchanting! You'll be so happy you bought this even if you've never even heard a single song by any of these three.
It's the Gold Standard in musical entertainment.

Customer Reviews:
Better remastering job on this UK Version than on the DRG American Release.......2006-03-11
This is one of those Desert Island Discs people always talk about. Most people know Shirley Bassey for her great James Bond themes. But this recording done over two days in May way back in 1973 demonstrates the incredible talent, humor and versatility of this Welsh superstar who was never quite as popular in the U.S. as in Europe.
I had the double United Artists album of this concert as a kid. I hadn't heard it in some years until the recent releases done with this UK version from BGO Beat Goes On and the different American remastering by DRG Records. The edge goes to this recording. Somehow the songs, the musicians and even crowd noise is clearer and sharper on this release. The DRG version disappointed me a little as there is a slight flatness to it that I did not remember from the old vinyl version. So, I'd recommend shelling out a few dollars more and going with this one. It also comes with a multi-page booklet with interesting liner notes and a host of pictures of Dame Shirley taken throughout her career.
If you are not a fan you will be after listening to this explosion of talent.
DAME SHIRLEY AT HER BRILLIANT, BOMBASTIC BEST.......2006-02-13
Those who know me know that I worship at the Shrine of Bassey. Those who wonder why need to listen, even once, even briefly, to this 1973 sold-out celebration. Here is the bombastic belter at her best: cooing and wooing and working the crowd into a frenzy not seen since Judy worked the hall a decade earlier. Choosing a highlight is (almost) impossible --- "Day By Day" and "Big Spender" have to be cited, but the takes on "Never, Never, Never," "You and I" and "This is My Life" are Bassey at her most brilliant. I am not the only one who understands the power of love: In 1999, the Queen of England choose Shirley to receive her highest honor, proving that, indeed, there's nothing like this Dame.
At Her Peak.......2006-02-04
Dame Shirley Bassey gives it her all at this concert from Carnegie Hall, 1972. Personally there are three recordings from Carnegie Hall that are must have for me; Judy Garland's, Liza Minnelli's and Shirley's Carnegie Hall albums. This live recording is a bravura performance, her vocal power is amazing and the material she performs is amazing. She opens the show with her biggest hit single ever, Goldfinger, which is pretty bold! Who have the nerves to open a show with their biggest hit? She continues with to songs from the album "I Capricorn" the latter, and "Where Am I Going" which are adorable. Shirley seems so happy to perform there and it shows "Let Me Sing and I'm Happy" is bawdy but so fantastic and her rendition of "Johnny One Note" is out of this world. She sings many of her biggest hits from "For All We Know" to "And I Love You So". This is simply one of the greatest live performances I've ever heard, her voice is so powerful, unlike anything I've ever heard. Her onstage chatter with the audience just proves how humble she is - and not at all this diva everybody likes to classify her as. Many of these songs are covers of old classic, but Shirley makes them her own with her amazing interpretation skills as a performer, "Big Spender" is originally by Peggy Lee, but over the years the song has become mostly associated with Bassey. Her voice is very unusual, a deep bellowing with a strong mannered vibrator. "Something in the way he moves" she sings in such a convincing manner, with strong conviction and capability. The entire show is out of this world, Bassey is at the top of her game and only a few people could follow her. At the end of the show she performs her statement song "This Is My Life" which is simply amazing, again a perfect display of her amazing skills. When it all comes down to it, Shirley Bassey: Live At Carnegie Hall is one of the greatest live albums of the 70's and a great legacy to all performers to come.
Shirley Bassey Live At Carnegie Hall.......2005-08-13
Ms. Bassey is at her best in the live CD. A voice that cannot be matched! Perfect array of ballads and old favorites. Strongly recommeneded!
THE BEST SHIRLEY ALBUM--EVER!.......2005-07-12
Hold on to your hats, folks, Shirley B is at Carnegie Hall and
the walls shake! This was the first Bassey album I ever bought
(back then it was a 2-lp set with a different cover, at least
in the USA) and it is still my favorite. So entertaining, so
much fun, such a great selection of material, such wonderful
singing! This is one of the best live albums I own, by anyone
in any music genre. You truly feel the excitement. This was
recorded in 1973 when Shirley was at her absolute peak (not that
she isn't still fabulous) and sums up her career nicely. All
the high points are here--"Goldfinger", "Diamonds Are Forever",
"This Is My Life", "Big Spender", "I Who Have Nothing", etc. The
most touching and beautiful version of "And I Love You So" EVER,
better than her studio recording, in my opinion. A driving,
relentless "Johnny One Note"; a beautiful and sensuous "I
Capricorn" (one of her most overlooked classics), and many
many more. The improvement in sound over the LP is staggering,
and makes the original sound almost like a bootleg. There is
now an immediacy and intimacy to the vocals that was missing
from the original release. All the nuances of Shirley as well
as the musicians can now be enjoyed like never before. I have
two minor gripes that fans of the original will notice--first off, the CD fades up into the intro to "Goldfinger" instead of
the BOM-BOMMM notes opening the show. Why they did this is
beyond me. Secondly, the tape fades out signaling the end
of the original "LP sides". Why didn't they edit this for
the CD? But these are small quibbles when put against the
fact that we finally have this classic of vocal artistry
sounding like it should sound for the digital age. Cheers,
Shirley! Well done!

Strange days, indeed.......2004-03-15
This album spotlights some of the most peculiar music ever recorded. The tracks were all taken from one person's record collection. They were copied right from the old records, so they have some scratches and pops on them. Despite the audio flaws, this is a fun CD. You get moog instrumentals, novelty songs, word jazz, Hawaiian music, xylophone instrumentals, children's gospel music and some things that are uncategorizable. GREAT FOR PARTIES!!.......2001-11-19
My most favorite time to play this cd is when i am having a party. I shuffle it with a bunch of other stuff and the looks on my guests face when one of these songs come up is hilarious!! Its like a private joke my partner and I have. ha ha ha. Especially track #2 The Mummy!!

For the Dreamer In Us All.......2002-03-20
This CD is unlike any other concert you've ever heard. The superlatives for this album would fill volumns. Rod was at Carnegie Hall for his birthday celebration in 1970 and his intimancy with the crowd is obvious early on. The love seems to flow in each direction, from audience to performer and back. The songs and poems are warm, wistful, happy, sad and run the full spectrum of human emotions. Unfortunately, the CD has been edited by taking out some twenty minutes of the concert, but what remains is priceless. If you can listen to Rod's reading of "A Cat Named Sloopy" and not have a tear in your eye I'd be surprised. The same with "To Watch the Trains," "I'll Catch the Sun," and "I've Been to Town." Sit back, relax, close your eyes, and just let the songs of life, love, love lost, loneliness and childhood just wash over you. I promise you an unforgettable experience.Joe M. HayesDel Mar, CA
The end of a long search..........2001-08-27
My mother took me to see Rod McKuen at Carnegie Hall the night this album was recorded. I was young, but the music and lyrics moved me. Years later, my mother, bought this album and we relived that night over and over until the album was worn out. Now, many years later, I can once again relive that night and, more importantly, those special moments with my late mother. Thank you so much Amazon for making this available.
Glad to know his wonderful music is still available........1999-06-10
What a marvelous talent. One of the worlds best poets as well as a great songwriter and singer. Thanks for putting this wonderful talent on your availability list. I have been looking everywhere for some of his albums.
Not all of the original material is on this CD.......1998-10-16
Otherwise, a fine CD to purchase.

Her best Studio Album.......2006-07-01
Never Never is a perfect album with all great songs. The other is a drag along with some good covers. The reason to buy this is Never Never Never, whose songs reveal Shirley's many facets and depth.l

Album Description
Asphodel reissue of the 1967 release of Ken Nordine Does Robert Shure's ''Twink'', re-titled Wink, at the insistence of the author Shure. The hallmark of his original work was its unfeigned innocence, an atmosphere the original title, alas, could no longer convey. 34 tracks like 'Zebra', 'When You're Born', 'Cellophane', 'Moth', 'Knee' and 'Eyelashes'. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
Ken Nordine: Unsung Hero of Audio.......2005-10-14
Ken Nordine, a pioneer of spoken word artistry (check out "Word Jazz", an essential offering in his canon), collaborated with writer/poet Robert Shure on "Wink" (originally titled "Twink", but changed for this CD release to avoid any misunderstandings based on the contemporary argot). The combination of Shure's whimsical words and Nordine's velvety smooth voice is aural honey. This collection of absurdist badinage is a joy to all who'd embrace Eugene Ionesco filtered through Steven Wright. Short, sweet, perfect tracks.
