This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine

I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!

Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.

My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.

These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.

I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

I was beginning to worry that I was getting to harsh in my reviews because I was saying the same things over and over, but Tommy broke me out of that. This is a great CD, musical lover or not. The music is fantastic. As in all operas (in any genre) themes repeat and Tommy has some repetitions, but not to many, and not annoyingly. The story is told out great through this CD. Although reading the synopsis helps visualize more, the lyrics and music really let the listener grip it all. A word on the lyrics, They aren't the greatest words ever written, but they're pretty good. And the singers on this CD give it so much life its unbelievable. I strongly suggest this CD to new musical fans, as well as collectors, it will please most audiences. Favorite Song: "I'm Free/Pinball Wizard (Reprise)"

Save your money and get the original WHO version of Townshend's masterpiece. I am a BIG fan of Pete Townshend but this CD is almost laughable: a pit band that tries to sound rock "heavy"; the overly slick production; every spect of the story is literally explained with lots of very unclever "hit the audience over the head" messages. Did the director really think us rock/theatre fans would like this? There is no subtext and everything is nauseatingly "on-the-nose" (e.g. the re-written "let's all get along" family ending almost makes me giggle, if it's not causing my stomache to turn.)

I LOVE this album!! I haven't listened to it in ages but upon listening to it again it brings the show back into my head. I can picture what takes place during each scene by listening to the music again. I saw the show when it toured through about 12 years ago. I LOVED the show and must've seen it close to 20x before it left the L.A. area. This show just rocks and was such a fun show to see too!! If you saw this show either on Broadway or touring this is a must have in your collection. I highly recommend it if you're a Who fan too!

I don't know what the hoopla was all about; however, I didn't get to see the Broadway show. I thought they might have done something exciting with the piece, but it is very generic and old hat.

I purchased this album just after it's initial release in 92. I recently repurchased it, and I have to say it is just as good now as it was then. The music is awesome. there's a twisted story behind that rock opera, but it's fun. It ranks as one of my all time favorite albums. Highly reccomend

The version of "Nadia's Theme" (Theme from The Young and the Restless) isn't actually the one you're expecting. I believe it's actually the original arrangement made for "Bless the Beasts and the Children". So what later became the Young and the Restless theme (the one that was a hit) still remains unreleased on CD.

Hopefully, we can see that version on a future release. Maybe they could get "Little Ballerina Blue" on one while they're at it.

Still, some great stuff here.

I was excited to find this album. I bought it but was horrified to find a loud vocal on the first track. The rest of the music is all instrumental but this one track simply JARS you when it plays. Very disappointing!

Well, ERIC records has done it again.

Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.

First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.

There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.

Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!

There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...

Its listening the way it used to be.

This album was a very pleasant surprise. Without ever having actually heard him, I had formed a vaguely negative conception of Chet Baker's playing--white kid,West Coast,"cool school",couldn't really play the trumpet at all well,soft plaintive tone and a one-octave range,even Gerry Mulligan said he had no conception of what it meant to be a serious musician,etc.etc. It's true that as a trumpet technician, he's not even remotely in the same class as Dizzy Gillespie,Fats Navarro,Clifford Brown, or even a randomly selected Berklee trumpet major. But at least on this CD,he plays with a lot of drive,swings hard, has a lot of good melodic ideas and enough technique to execute them. All the talk about his flowing, lyrical lines has,it turns out,a solid basis in fact.He was not a disciplined well-schooled musician, but he had a gift for melody that no amount of study and practice can produce. I knew Russ Freeman only from some rather eccentric interjections on a few big-band tunes, but he turns out to have been a fine pianist,with real drive and authority. In short,this is quite a good album,well worth trying out,particularly if you currently share my former prejudice against Baker.[I should add that his singing,here mercifully confined to one track,strikes me as downright creepy; I gather I'm not alone in thinking this.On the evidence of this CD,one should stick to the trumpet playing.]

Pairing Chet Baker with Russ Freeman in the '50s resulted in some of the most gorgeous recordings of any era. Baker was an icon of the jazz world for his trumpet playing, his singing (almost sounding like a trumpet) and his incredible looks, which really stood out in the rather homely jazz world (jazz guys do not usually look like rock stars!). Russ Freeman was a fabulous pianist plus also a composer. Together the two men played the most romantic, most emotional music extant in jazz. Theirs is not the "intellectual" jazz as popularized by Dave Brubeck. Warning: Buying one Chet Baker CD can be dangerous for the wallet. Once you own one of his discs, you will want all of them. I certainly did and now have the cd collection to prove it! I also bought every recording I was able to find that he did with Russ Freeman.

These recordings, made between February and October 1953, feature Baker at the threshold of his carreer and vividly show his ceativity and promise. Anyone who questions why he continues to be held in such high esteem, should find the answer in listening to this CD.

There's a story that Charlie Parker, upon returning to New York from a trip to California, warned Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis about a new, young trumpet player out there named Chet Baker. These recordings demonstrate that the warning was justified.

This disc is actually "Quartet: Russ Freeman and Chet Baker" & is a Russ Freeman session issued under Chet's name. Russ composed 6 of the 8 tunes & he makes Chet work for his wages.

The album opens amusingly with "Love Nest," otherwise known as the theme for the Burns & Allen Show. Russ takes the lovely "Summer Sketch" solo half of the way through, then bringing Chet in for no more than a wonderfully pensive turn at the melody. That's followed by, for me, the album's two most swinging cuts, "An Afternoon at Home" & "Say When." They also pay homage to Billy Strayhorn with a romantic arrangement of "Lush Life."

This is top notch West Coast playing, with Shelly Manne on sticks & Leroy Vinnegar on big fiddle. Recorded in 1956. No singing. Check out the thumbnails on the insert by photographer William Claxton then check out the collections of great photos Claxton shot of this era & these talented musicians.

He is the master of trumpet jazz. This is the most orginal CD I have ever heard. His playing is better than people give him credit for. This is what jazz in the 1950's was like. This is how Jazz should be !

Two premier guitarists team up for this dual effort from Windham Hill, a collection of evocative guitar-based music with an occasionally jazzy bent. Very bright sounding music. Some of it is relaxing, some of it is uplifting, and some of it is moving. Overall, it is very good. Anyone who likes the softer styles of guitar music should listen to this album. If you like this title, I also recommend Craig Chaquico's Acoustic Planet. Great driving music.

I strongly suggest you listen to it with a good set of headphones. The experience is quite different from speakers, as you will appreciate sonic subtleties lost through speakers.

Actually, I rate it 4.5 stars.
I am an avid music lover of many genres. The entire CD is good, which is a rarity. All the tracks are beautifully orchestrated. The music is upbeat, melodic, rhythmic. No boring tracks. You won't be disappointed.

I bought this CD for the opening track, "Riders of the Ancient Winds", which I had frequently heard on the radio. Sometimes you buy a CD for the one track you've heard, and all the other ones turn out to be disappointing. This is definitely not the case here. There are so many terrific tracks, it's hard to say which is my favorite - they are almost all hauntingly beautiful, conjuring up a variety of moods and atmospheres. I love to put this CD on, close my eyes and drift away. "Seattle Child" evokes a brilliant summer day punctuated by rainshowers. "Change of Seasons" gives me a very powerful mental image of Pacific fog drifting over the redwoods of Marin County in late fall. I could go on describing my response to each track but you will probably have different images and moods. One thing's for sure, you will never grow tired of listening to this album.

... as this amazingly exciting album from way back in 1991 clearly demonstrates. Full of pop pretensions and funky beats, there are nonetheless jazz improvisations of the highest standards to be found here. From the opening beats of the title tune (which always remind me of the opening beats of Sade's "The Sweetest Taboo"), right through to the final strains of "Morning Song", Russ Freeman and his men take us through a delightful set that I'm sure Spyro Gyra were envious of.

Speaking of which, former Spyro Gyra bassist Kim Stone plays on this album, alongside people like Tony Morales on drums, Jeff Kashiwa on tenor and alto sax, Mark Portman on acoustic piano not to mention smooth jazz stalwarts like Dave Grusin, Kirk Whalum, Nelson Rangell and Omar Hakim, all of whom feature on some of the tunes. The one-man band Freeman himself plays keyboardsd, acoustic, classical, steel string and electric guitars, guitar synthesizer and bass.

This is the only Rippingtons CD I own but I very much doubt they made one that surpasses this one. And while I fully accept that there are some purveyors of so-called smooth jazz who barely make an effort, this band - or more accurately, this album - is definitely not to be placed in that category. Give it a listen. You will not be disappointed.

I have been a fan of the Rippington's since they first hit the airwaves on Jazz/New Age radio stations. Over the years they have faced many personnel changes. Frontman Russ Freeman has been the driving force behind all of their music. He is an absolute genius!!! The outstanding tracks on this one are Curves Ahead, Aspen, and Snowbound. Their isn't a bad song on this CD. I rarely give five stars to any CD, but I did here...because Curves Ahead and Welcome To The Saint James Club are the Rippington's at their best!!!!

Aspen is far and away my favorite Ripps track of all time, which is a bold statement when you consider the various gems the Ripps have produced over the years. Each track on this album has its own personality. Snowbound, North Star, Morningsong.....you won't be disappointed with this cd!

I bought "Curves ahead" - my first Rippingtons album - and was far from being disapointed. Actually all songs are very enjoyable, but especially "Miles Away" ( listened to it over and over again)and "Curves ahead" are outstanding tracks. All the players sound great!

It took these two a decade to follow up their first project, one of the best smooth jazz albums of the '90s. The songs, half of which were co-written by the leaders, are well-crafted gems. Some are radio friendly ("Palmetto Park," "Club Havana," and the Brazilian-tinged "Samba") and one--"Struttin'" featuring trumpeter Chris Botti--has soloing that may catch critics of smooth jazz by surprise. As with the first album's Kenny Loggins feature, there's also a cameo here with a singer not associated with jazz, Vince Gill. The album has the feel of Benoit's jazziest effort, Waiting for Spring, which he recorded with the late guitarist Emily Remler, and his handling of the string arrangements throughout this album is superb. One can only hope the pianist and guitarist get together again before 2014. --Mark Ruffin

Ten years ago a younger David Benoit and Russ Freeman did the 'Benoit/Freenan Project 1'{1994}. And to this day it is stiil one of my most favourite albums. I had just about given up all hope that these guys would ever do another album together. But as they say 'Good things come to those who wait'. And the good thing is the release of 'Benoit/Freeman 2'{2004}. I brought this album about a year ago and I listen to it all the time. With guest recording artist like Vince Gill and Chris Botti. And songs like Palmetto Park,Via Nueve,Samba and Club Havana 'Project 2' is a beautiful album. So what as changed over the last ten years? Well,for one thing Mr Benoit hair is now more grayer and Mr Freeman hair is a lot shorter. But the music is still top notch. And once again Benoit and Freeman demonstrate their ability to compose good music apart and together. So just sit back in your easy chair and enjoy this smooth jazz treat. And while you're at it why not give 'Project 1' a listen

I listen to alot of jazz and seem to know what I like. As soon as I heard this one it reminded me a little bit of Pat Mentheny (on his good days) and that is a compliment. In the other reviews people seem to be getting a little picky. No album is perfect and neither is this one. However I loved it and play it all the time.

This CD is decent at best. I give it 2 stars just based on the 3 songs (Palmetto Park, Samba, Via Nueve). They sound great and soothing, but everything else is mediocre. It is just uninspired. The 2 major flaws with the CD are Vince Gill singing, and the uneven solo time Russ takes over David. I love piano a lot more than classical guitar, and it seems Russ always takes 2 solos to David's 1. He is not the best guitarist in the world (all riffs sound the same from this guy) and David is much more technically proficient (classically trained pianist) in my opinion. Also, there are too many vocal tracks on today's smooth jazz CD's, and the vocal tracks always SUCK (excluding Fourplay, Norman Connors and Pat Metheny Group). If I want to hear singing, I'll buy Norah Jones, Al Jarreau, Diana Krall, and other VOCALISTS. One more thing, Trumpet is not the best smooth jazz instrument, so why the hell is Chris Botti on everything? I also play trumpet and would like to keep it in traditional jazz or classical music.

I know you need to be a "smooth jazz" fan to like this album but I want to write my opinion after listening to this album. David Benoit is a talented pianist and Russ Freeman is a talented guitarist, but like most smooth jazz albums, all the music in this album are predictable. Why they must waste their talents for 'smooth jazz' albums?

And why they invite Vince Gill to sing? He can't sing jazz, he's so boooriingg. If they want to invite pop singer to sing jazz, why they don't invite Norah Jones instead? She have a great voice... Or how about Brian McKnight, Vanessa Williams, Stevie Wonder, James Ingram?!?!? There's so many pop singer that could sing jazz but why Vince Gill (or to make thing worse... how about Robbie Williams)?

I'll start off by saying that Russ Freeman is what started my interest in contemporary jazz for twelve years now and I generally love anything he's involved in. I discovered David Benoit through his guest appearances with The Rippingtons, and went through a bit of a phase after seeing him live in some smooth jazz christmas concert (he was the only one who really stood out to me). I'm actually quite fond of Benoit's late 80's to early 90's solo work, as the producing is light and they generally show off his unique sound.

That being said, this CD was a bit of a let down for me. It sounded like, instead of combining the brillance of both artists, the compositions were trying to be generic enough to fit both playing styles. My favourite track is the one that Russ wrote himself. The album is decent enough to listen to, and if anything else, something new, but I don't think you would miss anything in passing it up. This is just my view of it, anyway.

Being a road warrior, I have the time to listen to music, and this album I hear every 5 moths or so. Its so good, there is not a fault, a disonance of any kind, yet it has depth as well as melody.

If you are selective and only look for that music you will keep forever, this is an album you cannot let go by.

BTW- I din't know Kenny logging could be so good on the 2nd song.

Heard this album just three months ago, and could not believe what I had been missing. Both artists are so very talented in their respective fields, and putting them together was sheer genius. The track"It's The Thought That Counts" is especially intriguing---alot of Freeman's guitar is so reminiscent of Antonio Carlos Jobim's style, and that is a real good thing. Jobim was a great favorite of mine. All musicians involved with this project[no pun intended], are very talented and from start to finish, it sounds like everyone was not only working hard, but enjoying themselves. I would not have known about this album if it were not for our great jazz station WHRL in Albany, N.Y. I have this "Project" on CD and cassette so that I have this magical music whever I go.

Mounting a revival of 42nd Street seemed a bit premature--after all, the show had closed in 1989 after nearly nine years on Broadway. But as a giddy love letter to the musical theater, it can't be beat, so we're not going to complain. Inspired by Busby Berkeley's movie, the show includes one great Warren-Dubin number after another, making it a feast of titanium-plated hits that include "You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me," "Dames," "We're in the Money," "Lullaby of Broadway," and, of course, the title song. The leads are on the bland side, but the rest of the cast--most notably Mary Testa, Jonathan Freeman, and 2001 Tony-winner Christine Ebersole--has more than enough spunk to fuel this revival. This is one of the most joyous albums you're likely to hear in a while. Call me an old curmudgeon, but I never understood why everyone thought 42nd St was so wonderful. I saw the original cast and except for the two big songs, Lullaby of Broadway and 42nd St.( which, okay, were pretty spectacular ensemble dance numbers), the rest was kind of ho-hum, cornball nonsense set to a bunch of standards. Nothing original or ground breaking. Mindless fluff and very often done better. Had director/choreographer, the great Gower Champion not died on opening night (and which David Merrick shamelessly, grossly and tastelessly exploited), the show would have had a mild run and been gone and forgotten. But it became something of a theatrical legend and an incredibly, long running hit. Oh well, that's show biz! This recording is no better or worse than the original, pleasant if forgettable.

does anyone feel a little bit uncomfortable with these lyrics? i know it was written awhile ago, but not so long ago that these kind of messages were readily accepted... i hope. i personally can't say i loved the show when i went to see it two years ago. the plot was unconnvincing and the themes personally bothered me. i'll admit that there are some winning songs in the album. some of my favorites being 'you're getting to be a habit with me' 'i only have eyes for you' and the title song, but my disliking for the actual show makes me regard the soundtrack in a negative light. if you will buy a cd for a handful of good songs amid many other, well, not so good, then buy it. first read up on the plot though. compared with the good, moving broadway plays, this one just doesn't measure up. it's all fluff. if you enjoy fluff, by all means get the cd.

Out of the many soundtracks I own, I can't say 42nd street is my favourite. However, it gets a listen every now and then. The length of it isn't so much a problem [I can listen to the 2001 The Producers and restrain from growing tired], there are a few songs I don't care for. Not to mention, some I blatantly skip over. However, "You're Getting To Be a Habit with Me", "Only Have Eyes For You", "Lullaby of Broadway", "A Quarter to Nine", and "42nd Street" are all excellent, and worh the 20 bucks. The beginning of the sdtk isn't the most enthralling show tunes I've heard, but the latter half makes up for it. If you're aim is to work towards completing your broadway collection, by all means, get this album! But if you're not much of a fan of musicals, there are better. 3.5 stars.

Even though the original performace only closed in 1989, after a nine year run(one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history), its really no suprise to see 42nd Street back in action. With catchy, classic songs such as the perky, slighty corny "We're in the Money", the comedic "Keep Young and Beautiful", the classic "You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me", the wonderful title song, and of course the big one, the turning point, the always great "Lullaby of Broadway", the show is larger than life. Christine Ebersole is truly a star, with an amazing vocal range. If you listen to all of her songs, you will hardly believe you are hearing the same person. David Elder has a perfect tenor voice, Michael Cumpsty, although everyone says he is no Jerry Orbach, has excellent acting skills, Mary Testa and Jonathan Freeman are the perfect pair, and Kate Levering is a talented Peggy Sawyer. The addition of some new songs, such as "Keep Young and Beautiful", "I Only Have Eyes for You", "With Plenty of Money and You" and the new verse to "42nd Street", make the show even greater. The "grandaddy of all backstage musicals" will never die: 42nd Street, that big parade, really will go on for years.

I discovered 42nd Street only this year, as it was my middle school musical. The music is catchy and fun, the lines are cute and funny, and the amount of dancing in the show is just amazing. Although I have yet to see the Broadway Revival,(unfortunately I was born too late for the original, I will never get over that)the CD carries the spirit of the show. Although the tapping is stronger on the original cast recording, the songs are just as beautifully done for the most part.(The original Lullaby of Broadway was better, but I liked the fact that you got to hear what I think is one of the mpost powerful lines in the show before the song). Along with the old favorites are some new ones, such as Keep Young and Beautiful and I Only Have Eyes for You. If you have heard both CDs, you will notice that some songs have different lyrics, like Maggie's verse of Shuffle of to Buffalo, and the added lyrics to 42nd Street. Christine Eberdsole's voice is amazing in range, in fact, if you listen to Shadow Waltz and then skip to the Act I Finale, you will hardly believe you are hearing the same person. Mary Testa and Jonathan Freeman are the perfect Maggie and Bert. Michael Cumpsty, although he is no Jerry Orbach, is a very good Julian Marsh. David Elder has a good tenor voice for Billy. Kate Levering, however, is a little disappointing. While a good singer, she isn't quite a Peggy Sawyer. From what I have heard, Meredith Patterson, the understudy, is more talented than Levering. All in all, if you consider yourself a lover of Broadway musicals, you HAVE to see and hear 42nd Street--Truly the Broadway musical for people who love Broadway musicals.

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.
