Album Description
Four years since his last studio album, and following up on his highest charting radio single ever ("Personal Jesus", from Lest We Forget), Marilyn Manson returns with "Eat Me, Drink me". Art openings, soundtrack appearances, and personal circumstance have grabbed headlines for Manson in recent months, setting the stage for the release of Eat Me, Drink Me, which is unquestionably the artist's most personal statement yet. Always the provocateur, in what may be the ultimate subversion of the code of aggro-rock, the songs are immediately catchy - all jagged guitar hooks, anthemic choruses, with an overlying glam-rock sheen. Lyrically Manson has never been more riveting, seemingly having enough to draw from in his own life and from society at large to present a fresh, snarling vision.

not that great of a cd though
Marilyn at his best!.......2007-07-12
This new cd by the uber harcore Manson is different, but in line with his best efforts to date. Heart-Shaped glasses is my favorite, but If I was Your Vampire is amazing and You and Me and the Devil Makes 3 is also another favorite of mine from the cd. If you want to get this cd I suggest you do so, don't even think twice about it if you're a MM fan already. It's not quite as hardcore (I don't think anyway) compared to some of his other cd's but it's still pretty hardcore. He tones down the cursing in this one as well. So all in all it is a great buy as far as music goes and a must-buy if you're a Manson fan!
Eat me Drink Me.......2007-07-11
The album was delivered with no scratches pings or anything, no skips on cd, was delivered quickly also.
Has It's Moments, But Falls Way Short Of Past Work.......2007-07-10
I've been a loyal Manson fan for about 11 years now. Even after really excellent albums like "Mechanical Animals" and "Holy Wood"...I came to terms with the fact that "AntiChrist Superstar" would always be the highlight of his genius. I thought that "Golden Age" was a pretty cool album, and it grew on me more over the years, but I still felt it was a bit dull and watered down when compared to the albums before it. After Manson took a 4 year break from music, I thought he'd return refreshed and inspired. But I grew worried as I read about the album, because even though Manson never came out and actually said it, this is really a solo album. Madonna Wayne Gacy and Ginger Fish do not perform on this album. And we already know that Twiggy Ramirez and John 5 are no longer in the band. This album is just Manson and guitarist/bassist Tim Skold. Manson spent more time on the lyrics and singing, and less time on a running theme or story for the album.
Since Marilyn Manson is one of my favorite artists to emerge from the 90's, I gave the album the benefit of the doubt. It starts off with "If I Was Your Vampire" - a very moody gothic tune. It's one of the albums best songs, but ultimately sounds like something that he would've just thrown on a soundtrack for a movie. The next song, "Putting Holes In Happiness" is a little more fun with a guitar riff you can tap your foot to. Still nothing special. The albums first single, "Heart Shaped Glasses", is a combination of the gothic disco sound that "Tainted Love" had with a guitar riff reminiscent of something from a band like The Strokes. One tune that stood out to me was "You And Me And The Devil Makes 3". I can't put my finger on it, but something about this song reminds me of Manson in his "Portrait Of An American Family" days. The album has a few other moments that could make you stop and think, "Hey that's cool." But I wonder if that's only because the rest of the album is so mediocre. I hate to give Manson anything but 2 thumbs up, but his music was always intelligent, emotional, heavy, and always evolving. This album just seems very uninspired to me, and as though he's trying to gain attention from the emo crowd. If you love everything Manson has done so far, then you could still like this. But don't expect the kind of magic he had from 1996 to 2001.
Best ever............2007-07-10
I bought this for my husband and I absolutely love this album. I think this is by far his best work ever. You can feel the pain in every song. I look forward to more work like this from him.

It's good, but! .......2007-05-12
As with all greatest hits packages theirs a lot of the radio friendly stuff and not enough of the really good stuff. Heart are a great band period. Their early stuff is simply fantastic and truly stands the test of time. The reinvented 80's heart was also very good, even if it's not quite as good as the early releases were. Their latest release, Jupiter's Child was a back to the basics what got us noticed in the first place release and it was another gem.
Ann and Nancy and supporting cast should be very proud of what they've accomplished in their careers. They have given us some true classics to look back on with fond memories and they have given us some newer releases that are every bit as good and even fresh sounding in a world of corporate crap.
I really wish Heart would go back and re-master all their releases and give us the listener a Sabbath style Black Box release and that would truly be a greatest hits package.
This collection of tunes is very good, but any true heart fan will be disappointed as it's just missing to much good stuff!!
I give it a 4 because it's Heart and because it rocks from start to finish, but I want more!!!!!

The Best Best of Heart.......2007-01-12
This compilation from the Capitol Epic label is the best available over- view of the female operated hard rock band Heart. It has all the great songs from their early, middle and late periods. The early period features hard rock with incredible guitar performances, the middle period (after their lead guitarist was fired for drug burn-out) features fine rock arrangements and great songs. The late period has beautiful arrangements of beautiful songs beautifully sung. For someone wanting to find out what Heart is all about, this is the double CD to buy. My only beefs are the few live performances here are not their best and you only get the reprise of "Dreamboat Annie," one of their best songs.
SONY MUSIC producing defective HEART cds.......2006-12-09
I bought the "Essential Heart" cd from Tower Rercords this weekend.
I just tried listening to it but Track #17 SKIPS and shuts down my media player.
The store (TOWER) is closing down & they refuse to even EXCHANGE IT!
They told me to contact the ones who release this album. All the info. & links on the back of the cd are no longer valid. I went to SonyMusic and even their links to this cd are defunct. I was able to find [...]which links back to SonyMusic - but when I call the two "QUALITY MANAGMENT" phone numbers they have, both are defunct and refer me back to the store I bought it from.
I am extremely angry and want my $15 back! No wonder Tower is going out of business with such bad customer service. All I'm going to be more careful before I buy a Sony/CapitolRecords cd!
Great, but it's missing a few songs........2006-11-10
I would have given this compilation a 5-star review except that there were four great songs that were ommited: 1. "Strong, Strong Wind" 2. "Surrender to Me" 3. "Tall, Dark, Handsome Stranger" 4. "Back to Avalon". Other than that, this is a wonderful 2-CD package from an awesome group.

Amazon.com essential recording
Critics have always been singularly unkind to Jimmy Buffett. Or at least they have since the singer became immune to their jabs, commanding a nation of Parrotheads who sell out his shows, snap up his records and books, and eat and drink in his nightclubs in Key West and New Orleans. By now, you've made up your mind as well: To paraphrase Buffett himself from his song "Volcano," you either lava him now, or you lava him not. Songs You Know by Heart is a friendly little best-of collection that features concert perennials such as "Margaritaville," "Fins," "Cheeseburger in Paradise," and the immutable "Why Don't We Get Drunk." If by some chance you've not yet been introduced to Buffett's music, this album is the best way to say hello. --Daniel Durchholz

If you only could have one Jimmy Buffet CD this is it!.......2007-06-11
All the best songs, a must have if you don't have any Jimmy yet. And a great addition to your existing Jimmy collection, and a great spare with all the great songs for the car CD, and what would Jimmy do? You guessed it! Go for it, you will not be disappointed because there is no bad Jimmy Buffet songs.
This is the one that hooks you.......2007-03-24
I've been listening to Jimmy for quite a few years. A friend recommended I get this album, and after that, I had to have everything else. If you've read my reviews, you know I've been rough on Jimmy's incessant string of repetitive live albums. This is the good stuff- All the songs are pulled from Jimmy's (non-Barnaby) albums up to but not including Coconut Telegraph. It skips the album Havana Daydreamin' entirely. I agree with other reviewers that the song selection leaves out a plethora of great Buffett tunes, but you'll find them eventually. This is a sampling of the artist in his prime, and if you like it, it's safe to say you'll enjoy the larger body of his work. If you don't like it, none of his other work is going to do it for you. I always thought Jimmy would come through with a greatest hits vol.2, or at least a double cd encompassing his larger body of work. That's what "Meet Me in Margaritaville" was supposed to be, but that collection just isn't coherent and definitive as Songs You Know By Heart. After becoming a hard-core fan, I have to say that this collection is really going to be the pinnacle of his compilation albums. So, if you're interested in trying out the works of Jimmy Buffett, start here. I'll bet you won't be disappointed. This stuff is solid gold. Thank you for reading my review!(note to Jimmy- why not consider putting the title track to "havana daydreamin'" on this as a bonus track for future pressings of the cd? It's a heck of a song, and it's from the era. It would fit right in.)
Parrotheads Unite!.......2007-01-13
Truly songs we all know by heart. Great music - hard to pick a song that doesn't go well with a Corona or Margarita, and hard to pick a song since that he's done that would push one of these off the CD. The song vividly captures the spirit of Margaritaville - we are turning into the people our parents warned us about, or so we would like to believe.
Perfect recipe for summer.......2006-10-07
Step one: buy this cd
Step two: buy new blender
Step three: buy lots of rum and fruit mixes
Step four: mix the rum and fruit
Step five: pour the mixture into a glass
Step six: put on the cd
Step seven: repeat steps three through six as often as needed
If you don't drink alcohol then you'll still enjoy this greatest hits collection. All the early hits are here and it's really all you need to know about the guy. But there is a lot more good stuff out there. Make sure you give it all a listen.
Not the best collection........2005-12-13
When I started listening to this CD, I was surprised that I found it devoid of the energy I associate with Jimmy Buffett. His newer material (both studio-recorded and live albums) have an enegry that is lacking in this older collection.
If you enjoy a more mellow JB form 20 years ago, or if you just like him for his radio hits, this is the album for you.
But if you're into the hard-core, serious partying, spontaneous, energetic JB, if you call yourself a Parrothead, skip this album.
I recommend _any_ of his live albums or "Meet Me in Margaritaville" instead of this one. You'll be getting more music for your money, anyway.

Three good songs.......2007-05-17
My wife wanted this collection after seeing it on a TV commercial. There are only about three good songs on this entire collection. Amazing Love is the best followed by open the eyes of my heart and the third I cannot think of right now. I would just buy the good ones from itunes.

New WT Fan from USA.......2007-07-12
The short of the long is that if you are from the USA, this Netherland based band won't be out of your vocabulary for long. Don't hesitate to purchase this album as it's sure to be liked! Also, I have grown on every track on the album within 3 listens. This one gets 4.5 stars!
I am SO impressed and hopefully Within Temptation succeeds in their release here. I am so grateful that I stumbled across this group during a internet search. I listened to a few tracks on their myspace before buying this album and the 2004 "Silent Force". I can see after reading reviews of WT loyal fans the difference in the two albums; however they are both excellent and I see no room for dissappointment (Yes, I do like this 2007 album better than 2004 as it's more rock). Also, I have read loyal fans blogs and their dislike of reference comparing them to Evanescence, however, we don't have any other band to compare to for that awesome fantasy spine chilling night owl full moon gothic feel. They do not sound like Evanescence and you can't compare sharon and amy but they have the same fantasy like feel in a totally different sound that is excellent!
How this band has fallen!.......2007-07-10
Its hard to believe this is the same group that created the amazing album "Mother Earth". I had to keep checking the liner notes to make sure I had the right band. WTF happened? After the slightly disappointing "Silent Force" album I hoped they would get back on track. I now appreciate how good Silent Force was. Oh well, I'm off to the used record store to get rid of this mess.
Must have for Within Temptation fans! It does not disappoint!.......2007-07-03
First matter at hand, do not listen to any of these so called fans that say negative things about "The Silent Force". It is by far an awesome album in which I loved every single song. So the next album had a lot on its plate in trying to step up to the caliber of Silent Force. Fortunately, The Heart of Everything does just about that!
Tracks:
1. Howling - Let's just say I cranked up the volume in preparation for the experience. When the Howling came blasting on with the haunting choir and Sharon's dark voice, it sent chills down my spine and brought tears to my eyes. This song is Within Temptation in true Silent Force mode with the music, choir, and Sharon's voice soaring high and beautifully. The song about killing and descent into madness definitely suits the music and singing. Rating - 10/10
2. What Have You Done - I was a bit put off at first that WT went with a guest singer in Keith Caputo on a song. I don't even know who that is. But surprisingly the guy doesn't have a bad voice (although one appearance is enough). I admit like the rest of the reviewers that this song sounds a lot like something Evanescence would do. But the issue is that I firmly believe Evanescence's last album to be a complete failure. This song is pretty good in tempo and dark mood in showing Evanescence how it is REALLY done. Rating - 8/10
3. Frozen - The first ballad of the album, but it is really a hard ballad when you really look at it. A haunting song about sacrifice that sees Sharon soaring with her voice in lamenting quality that will send more chills through you. As you can tell by this point as I did listening, this album has a darker overtone to it so far. Rating - 9/10
4. Our Solemn Hour - WOW! Just when you think another dark song would come out, this song literally explodes into a soaring melody of choir and Sharon's voice. I was a little put off at first by the guy talking a little in the background but you either learn to tune it out or accept it (it only happens at a few short points really, that's all). I accepted it as it fits the song well in talking about the destruction mankind is wreaking havoc in its sinfulness and Sharon pleading for the Holy Spirit to redeem and save us. Just the choir chanting "Sanctus Espiritus" is mind blowing! Then Sharon belting it out with everything she's got with her voice will blow it away even further! By far my favorite song on this album and would receive a 100 rating if I could! Unbelievable! Rating - 10/10!
5. The Heart of Everything - This song actually rather surprised me. Most all of us are used to Sharon soaring with her voice, but in this one she brings her voice down lower than I've every heard her before. And she pulls it off really well! Probably one of the most gothy songs on the album, reaching back to their earlier days with some of the subtle growling in the background. The darkest song yet to be sure. Rating - 8/10
6. Hand of Sorrow - If Our Solemn Hour wasn't on this album, this song would easily be the hit of the album. It is much like the song mentioned but with less choir. In Hand of Sorrow you can hear Sharon more clearly in her melodic voice. Again she cuts loose with her vocals in this incredible song about a tortured soul torn between his love and his oath of honor in which often makes pay the price in doing terrible things. Another hit! 10/10
7. The Cross - Track number seven isn't 'lucky number seven' for Within Temptation. This is the one song on the whole album where they tripped and fell flat on their face. It starts off with Sharon high pitched like Mariah Carey before you hear her "Ah ah ah ah ah aaaaahhhhh!" repeatedly! It sounds like some weird laughing that is seriously distracting and annoying. I gritted my teeth trying to listen through the whole song but I only made it 2/3 of the way through. WT would best be wise to avoid this kind of style like the plague in the future. Rating - 3/10
8. Final Destination - WT gets off the ground and dusts themselves off as they redeem themselves with this track about escaping death but leading into paranoia about death around every corner and how easily fragile life can be snatched away. Sharon once again drops her voice down but not so much of the time in this one as she is soon back to singing high with her angelic voice. Rating - 9/10
9. All I Need - The first real ballad of the album. No choir. Very little guitars. Just Sharon singing passionately with drum and orchestra about the hope found in love. A big contrast compared to the darkness of most of the album but a really nice touch. In this we get to see Sharon's versatility in being able to sing a great love ballad. Rating - 8/10
10. The Truth Beneath the Rose - Back to the darkness we go! The choir never ceases to fail as they explode into a haunting chant before Sharon comes in to sing this song about the inner turmoil and battle a person faces with the evil inside oneself while praying for forgiveness for sins committed. The longest song on the album is what it ends up being but you barely notice as the whole song captivates you all the way through! Outstanding! Rating - 10/10
11. Forgiven - Get your tissues out for this one cause you WILL need it. This song has only Sharon's voice, violin, and a Piano in a haunting song of grief over losing a loved one and being left behind. I was left in tears by the end of the song. Her voice is so bitterly sweet that it will no doubt touch most everyone's heart. It brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it, reminding me of loved ones I miss so much. Simply Beautiful doesn't begin to describe it. Rating - 10/10
Overall this album is much like a mixture of Silent Force and Mother Earth that really makes for memorable songs. While it falls just short of the incredible album Silent Force, it is another fine installment by Within Temptation that will keep me as a fan for a long time! This album is a must have for other fans and for anyone interested in this group. I love it!

Absolutely wonderful.......2007-07-02
All I can say is wow, this album is one of the best in a while. I generally come here on amazon to look for new cds to add to my collection, and I am very happy to announce that I chose this once. I first stumbled upon Evanescence a few years ago, and loved the concept of rock music mixed in with opera sort singing. They aren't the best example of course, but everyone starts somewhere. Later, I found Nightwish which I have to say is the most talented band by far. I sort of got stuck there as far as symphonic metal until I heard this cd. The great thing is, it is a mix of Evanescence and Nightwish. But, in reality they are their on band and don't resemble very much of either. The lead singer has a very beautiful and talented voice, and I cannot understand why anyone would say it's crap or annoying (I'm referring to some other reviews). The background music is done very well and they don't sound off key like most bands do. I really love how all of their songs sound different. I am not sure that I would call this full blown metal music, but it is definitely different from all of the other bands on TV. In conclusion, amazing CD with finally a singer who actually has a voice.
Within Temptation Live.......2007-06-26
I caught this band on tour with Lacuna Coil. Blew me away!!! Never heard of them prior to that evening. They played alot of the new stuff from this effort. I was really impressed with the lead singer, she has really great stage pressence and looks awesome as well. Hard to believ this band has been around ten years and I had'nt heard of them. Lots of videos on Youtube worth spending time on.

This teaming of Linda Ronstadt and Cajun folk traditionalist Ann Savoy, billing themselves as the Zozo Sisters, shows how wide is the musical range of bittersweetness. The harmonies and shared lead vocals offer a complementary contrast between Ronstadt's purity of tone and Savoy's more piquant expressiveness. The arrangements turn folk songs into art songs, drawing as much upon chamber strings as Cajun fiddle and accordion. There's an exquisite beauty to the vocals, but the real surprise is how well the album holds together, given a range of material that extends from Cajun songs in French patois to stellar material from Julie Miller ("I Can't Get Over You," with husband Buddy Miller on guitar) and Richard Thompson ("King of Bohemia," "Burns' Supper") to a disarming revival of the Left Banke's 1960s hit "Walk Away Renee." Among other highlights, "Go Away from My Window" provides a showcase for the upper register of Ronstadt's soprano, and Savoy's lead vocals on Bill Monroe's "The One I Love Is Gone" bring out the blues in bluegrass. --Don McLeese

Adieu False Heart.......2007-05-10
This is an absolute masterpiece, expertly produced and arrainged.
Hauntingly beautiful folksy romance with alittle country twinge.
Linda Ronstadt continues to melt my heart with each new release and
she is certainly one of the finest female singers on the planet.
ann savoy sounds just like her and they share the lead and harmonies
half&half.Several of the songs are in french and that works well
for them, love it.Hear one of the most outstanding female lead vocal
preformances of the century so far on"Go away from my window" by
Linda. If you love sophisicated ADULT ROMANCE go ahead a take a chance.
Breathtaking..........2007-03-10
This album blew me away. The songs are simple and the singing is heartfelt. The vocal harmonies are perfection! I can't say enough good things about this album.
Cajun Celtic Bluegrass.......2007-02-13
With uncomplicated beauty, Linda Ronstadt and Ann Savoy have given us an outstanding album of unusual music. Recorded at The Cypress House on Bayou Tesche in Parks, Louisiana, these songs could be described as Cajun Celtic Bluegrass. I love the toe-tapping Celtic bluegrass numbers mixed with Cajun ballads sung in French and the instrumental interludes consisting of dulcimers and resophonic violas. The harmonies are truly awesome. And these ladies give us a cover of Walk Away Renee that is stunningly beautiful. If you enjoying collecting rare flowers, this CD is for you.
Beautiful album.......2007-02-06
Beautiful voices; beautiful songs. I listen to this album at home, at work, and in the car, and I bought the album for two friends.
Great CD.......2007-01-17
This is wonderful ... I've given it to several friends because it's music you want to share. Linda Ronstandt's and Ann Savoy's voices blend beautifully, the songs are haunting, and the instrumentation is gorgeous.

Album Description
Hayley Westenra's new album Odyssey was always going to be a different proposition to Pure, the record-breaking 2003 collection which marked her international debut. A lot has happened to the young New Zealander over the past two or three years--and those changes are clearly reflected by a record which encapsulates her growth from a budding teenage prodigy into a mature young woman.
Now, at 18, Hayley is ready to show the world how much she has grown up, both as an artist and as an individual. Fans of Pure will be pleasantly surprised by her new album. Her wonderful voice retains its crystal-clear purity, but Westenra's singing is now richer and more rounded than before. Touring the world and singing in some of its greatest concert venues, such as the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall, has worked wonders for her confidence. Suitably emboldened, she has embraced an even wider range of musical styles including classical, hymns, folk and pop.
"I was happy with Pure at the time, but I've moved on so much," says Hayley. "It's really exciting to have something new out there for people to listen to. I wanted to make a record that represented me as a person. And I think I've improved as a vocalist."
Variety is certainly one of the keywords with Hayley's new album. When she first entered a recording studio in New Zealand as a 12-year-old, Westenra restricted herself to classical pieces and show tunes. Now, in addition to impressive takes on classical works, Hayley uses her new album to perform an inspired cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and has arranged and written much of the material. "I like to push myself, and I'm now confident enough to try different things. I have been much more involved behind the scenes with this album--I wanted to put my individual stamp on each song."
With her career stretching out promisingly before her, Hayley is also keen to continue experimenting. She is still primarily a classical crossover artist but she also wants to keep broadening those musical horizons. Three years after her international debut CD, Hayley Westenra is still pure: she exudes pure quality and she remains pure class--but her musical journey continues with her new album Odyssey.

Wonderful melodies.......2007-06-08
This is a wonderful CD with beautiful melodies. Hayley Westenra has a very pure voice and sings right on key. The melodies are very relaxing and the musical settings are well arranged.
Hayley Westenra - Odyssey.......2007-06-08
Pure, crystalline, angelic voice. Gorgeously produced. "Prayer" is stunning. "Both Sides Now" wonderful. The rest is good but not her best song selection. When I first heard this girl on the "Celtic Woman" tour I was totally blown away. None of her CDs will disappoint!
Very soothing.......2007-05-14
Hayley Westenra's Odyssey is a very beautiful CD. If you switch on your walkman and listen to the CD's tracks non-stop, you'll soon feel like you're flying in Heaven. It's very soothing and heavenly. It calms you down, without causing you to feel lonely or sad because you're listening to it in solitary, like other vocal or classical songs do sometimes.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested. Quanta Qualia and Ave Maria are my most favourite tracks. Quanta Qualia is pure magic! I really feel as if I'm flying in Heaven when I listen to it.
very good pop singer voice.......2007-05-13
the selections were tasteful and varied. the singer has a very good pop singer voice. i would have liked some voice variation between songs. all were sung in exactly the same style. good singing but without tonal variation the disk tends to be bland. i hope that as she gets more exposure she will vary her voice to make the songs stand out individually instead of letting them blend into one song on the disc. i would rate this 5 stars except for that major fault.
Voice & level head deserve high marks .......2007-04-20
Not only has Hayley Westenra's voice remained "pure", but her good sense and sensibilty has stayed intact when so many similar young performers have gone over the deep end with extreme behavior and disreputable remarks. On this CD Miss Westernra covers a number of songs in her own special style, such as excellent versions of "Prayer", "May It Be" and "Both Sides Now". I hope to hear her renditions of more such tunes, old and new. I would like to hear her sing songs like "Yesterday", "I Still Believe in Love" and All I Know. She has a way with her soaring vocals that never lets the listener down.

In the grand, color-bending tradition of psychedelic experimentalism, Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother takes as its title an inscrutable phrase and under the title launches a similarly inscrutable--or at least dense--musical concatenation. The title suite features French-horn-led brass melodies riffed on by David Gilmour's guitar and the rhythm section, all of which veers into choral passages that recall György Ligeti's vocal works and then almost atonal pulses of keyboards that mask reams of audio snippets swirling underneath. And then there's some moody folk from Roger Waters, an almost Kinks-ish rambler from Richard Wright, then more moody folk (this time from Gilmour) on "Fat Old Sun," and, to close, the spirited melodic runaround of "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast." There's a range of emotion here, from doleful to crazed to humorous (especially the dramatized comments on macrobiotics in the closer). Atom Heart Mother was a spotlight ahead for Pink Floyd, showing the extensions of form the band would engage in so successfully on Dark Side of the Moon just a few short years later. --Andrew Bartlett

A Fan.......2007-05-12
Found it strange at first, then fell in love when I keep on listening.
Famous more for the cover than the music.......2007-03-24
The cover has been listed on a lot of "favorite" lists.
They had also done a PBS concert following the release of this album which you may be able to find online that's worth checking out.
The title track isn't "Echoes" but is better than some of the studio side of "Ummagumma". "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" is an exercise in ambient sound.
2 songs from this era, "Embryo" and "Biding My Time" weren't included but there's enough room on the CD for it to go on.
I think that if you're into groups like Can, you can hear what may have influenced "Tago Mago", and it is definitely a transition album for Pink Floyd that without this, "Meddle" and "Obscured by Clouds" wouldn't have been made, which in turn would help develop "Dark Side of the Moon".
An Obscure, Yet Classic Floyd Album.......2007-03-21
Contrary to popular belief amongst all of those classic rock fans who've been educated by their local classic rock station, Pink Floyd existed before the release of their 1973 album "Dark Side of the Moon." A band that had made a huge transition from the psychedelic tendencies of the brilliant, yet drug addicted Syd Barrett, much of the early years of Pink Floyd were spent bumbling around in the dark, trying to find the sound that would put them on the right track.
I, for one, respect the hell out of these years for the Floyd. They were rewarded for their persistence and experimental nature which helped create their sound. Atom Heart Mother is one particular case of this happening.
This album is highly degraded by the band themselves nowadays... David Gilmour has stated on a couple of occasions his disgust for this record, and other members of the band have as well. Drummer Nick Mason's criticism of the album is much more restrained than the others, as he has noted that many of the elements, such as the long instrumentations and styles later found in DSoTM and Wish You Were Here, were first started with this album.
The name of the album came from a headline in a British newspaper which told of a news story about a pregnant woman who had recieved an atomic pacemaker. The cover of the album, a cow in the English countryside, was a specific request from the band to designer Storm Thorgerson to provide them something that would deflect from the overall theme of the album, which would allow them to be more creative with their music. Thorgerson went for a drive, and shot the first mundane thing he saw, a cow standing in a pasture.
Here is the list of tracks:
1. Atom Heart Mother Suite (23:44) (Waters, Gilmour, Wright, Mason, Geesin)
2. If (4:31) (Waters)
3. Summer '68 (5:29) (Wright)
4. Fat Old Sun (5:24) (Gilmour)
5. Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast (13:00) (Waters, Gilmour, Wright, Mason)
The opening track, on the vinyl version of this album, took up all of the first side. A very experimental and long track, composer Ron Geesin, an aquaintence of Roger Waters, was brought in with a full orchestra backdrop to add to the song. The track is somewhat dragging, definately sprawling, and a little pretentious, but it's not hard to recognize the talent in the piece. Gilmour's guitar was solid throughout the composition, and while not really leading to any place in particular, the Suite definately keeps you engaged throughout, and is an impressive, if not somewhat confusing track.
The middle tracks are individual songwriting contributions from the band. Waters' "If" is a folky, somewhat mocking ballad. Wright's "Summer '68" seems to me to be a mix of The Kinks and The Beatles, taking elements of both and rolling it into one. Of the solo compositions in the album, I enjoyed this one the most, as well as the fact that it's probably the strongest of the three in it's presentation. Gilmour's "Fat Old Sun" is a nostalgic song of the days of youth. He'd hit this theme later on as well, at the end of the Floyd's run with the song "High Hopes" from The Division Bell. The songwriting of Fat Old Sun is very personal, but weak in comparison with later Floyd compositions. The end guitar solo is quite good, existing also a sign of things to come.
The final track "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" continues where Atom Heart Mother Suite leaves off, throwing caution to conventional music. The song, complete with background noises of Pink Floyd roadie Alan Stiles preparing and eating his breakfast, is broken into three musical parts. The music itself is quite good, but a tad underwhelming. The last part of the song, titled "Morning Glory" is the strongest part of the song, and brings the album to a strong close.
Overall, one cannot fully understand a musical act until they expose themselves to the humble beginnings. Pink Floyd rose meteorically to their stardom... they once found themselves trying new things, and creating a formula for success. It's important, especially in the Floyd's case, not to ignore the importance of the first few albums.
Atom Heart Mother maybe chided as the worst Pink Floyd album by a few. But it's not. It's not their best either. It's one of my favorite, and one of their most important albums, as it really got the ball rolling in their evolution from psychedelic to progressive themes of rock.
A Good Pre- Dark side Listen.......2007-03-18
Ever since I was 6 or so (35 yrs ago) I have been just mesmerised, musically in love.....with Pink Floyd. I find "Atom Heart Mother" definitive of the modern Floyd sound as much as any in the early era. I like the well composed yet seemingly randomised sequences on the long side( long tune on CD) and the diversity of musical forms shown within. I see it as a harbinger of the future for them as it has some very good songs thatsadly, not many know. I got it in 1976 on album and later , as all things, digital in the eighties. i have learned on piano and guitar most of it, as is fun to play , not hard , yet entertaining.
Itis a must for the budding PF fan. Waters inluences give us a hint of textures he can only provide and Gilmore seems to be at ease with his new surroundings .....Buy it , you wont regret it, man.
Atom Heart Mother is both typical and atypical Floyd..........2007-03-14
I think the Wikipedia page on Atom Heart Mother says all that needs to be said about this fine classic Floyd album. Either you like it or you don't. I'd go as far as to say that if you really like Pink Floyd, I mean *REALLY* like Pink Floyd, then you'll probably enjoy this album. If all you know of Floyd is Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall, you will probably find this experimental album a bit strange and maybe even painful to hear.

Is Sarah McLachlan a secret punk rocker? To be sure, her rebellion is hushed. On Afterglow, her first studio album since 1997's Surfacing, McLachlan's music is as tempered as ever; at times even the piano chords at the heart of the sound are tucked neatly beneath layer upon layer of strings and overdubbed voices. Listen to what's being sung within this soothing aural bed, though, and hear the just-before-sleep murmurings of the quietest riot grrl: "I'm a train wreck waiting to happen.... a wildfire born of frustration," "How stupid could I be.... you're no good for me, but you're the only one I see," "I have to push just to see how far you'll go." The latter song ("Push") resolves itself with the assurance, "You complete me." Ultimately, McLachlan fans will be comforted again by what turns out to be her reliably untroubled aesthetic. --Rickey Wright

"I know you can't resist, trying to re-open a sore...".......2007-05-08
Afterglow by Sarah McLachlan is surprisely moving and wonderfully produced. I am not normally a McLachlan super-fan but some of her songs before this album are quite engaging. I decided to give this album a chance, standout tracks include: Time, Perfect Girl, Dirty Little Secret, Stupid, and Answer. Sarah's voice has improved and her lyrics are at its strongest. I could listen to the track, Time all day long, it sucks you in after the first 20 seconds, amazing! So whether you hate or love her, Afterglow will have you bathed in it for awhile. Enjoy!

I know that this review won't be very helpful, all I can say is that I love this album. Been listening to it for a couple of years now, and it's a fave when I'm in a mood to be mellow. I am giving this five stars so that amazon will recommend more music like this in my personal recommendations. Same with Fumbling Toward Ecstasy.

If you're pondering the purchase of Greatest Hits for its one new track--an ordinary power ballad penned by Diane Warren and produced by Peter Asher--move on. If, however, you're in the market for a summary of the stalwart Northwestern band's fertile 1976 through 1983 period, this will do. Selections from Dreamboat Annie, Little Queen, Dog & Butterfly, and Bebe Le Strange dominate this 17-song collection, which is fleshed out by "Heartless" (from 1978's Magazine) and tracks from four '80s Epic LPs. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
Gotta have Heart.......2007-06-09
This is a nice sampler of the early Heart years before they became MTV heroines and went into a more blatantly pop and keyboard saturated phase. I'm biased towards these earlier works so I recommend this package of hits opposed to the more career spanning ones. Heart is a multi-faceted band whose greatest hits don't tell the whole story. What this album lacks are many of the folkier songs from Heart but what it has are plenty of the heavier songs that the casual fan will certainly recognize. The songs on here are all very good, especially Barracuda, one of the best songs I've ever heard in my life. Even now, over thirty years later, that song NEVER gets old to me. It is a superficial compilation to be sure, but it gives the casual fan what they are seeking. The best greatest hits collections should encourage a deeper exploration of the artist, and if this one draws Heart novices to purchase Dreamboat Annie or Little Queen and they discover the hidden treasures that Heart has to offer, then it has done its job. A great place to start.
greatest hits minus a classic.......2006-08-01
Another greatest hits debacle. For the most part, this is their best stuff but where's Mistral Wind? It was a favorite of the band, fans and radio.
Femails can rock but that's not an issue here.......2006-06-12
The unique thing about this band is that although there is girls in this band if you were a alien and didn't know the difference in vocal tones from guys and girls you really couldn't tell the difference they were not about promoteing femmineity just going out there rocking and letting the music prove themselfs and it does.
Classic .......2006-02-17
This band has a unique interesting sound. The song Crazy on You is unbelievably good. Heart is a band that never was really promoted properly. The female vocals are among the best in the world!
Magic Man 4 life!.......2005-12-11
Heart was my first great experience with rockin' chicks, and I always come back to them. While I didn't like some of their later over-produced mush, their music will always have a place in my heart. Rock on, sistas!
