Maybe they should have subtitled this album O Sister, Where Art Thou? Like the music from the Coen brothers' O Brother... movie, Songcatcher celebrates the emotional purity of mountain music, the acoustic balladry of the Appalachians--only this soundtrack features an all-female assemblage. Among the luminaries who shine the brightest: Rosanne Cash, who sets the tone with the album-opening "Fair and Tender Ladies"; Julie Miller, whose original "All My Tears" could pass as an old spiritual; Patty Loveless, who returns to her Kentucky roots with "Sounds of Loneliness"; and Gillian Welch, who leads an a cappella rendition of "Wind and Rain." Of the more familiar material, Emmylou Harris seems like she's coasting through the oft-revived "Barbara Allen" while Maria McKee sounds like she's singing for her life on "Wayfarin' Stranger." Yet the emphasis throughout is less on vocal virtuosity than on the stark simplicity of the songs, the album more impressive as an ensemble piece than a showcase for individual singers. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Songcatcher.......2007-05-30

This CD is absolutely fantastic. If anyone that enjoys mountain music will
certainly be crazy about it. And if you enjoy the CD, you will diffiently enjoy the DVD of the Songcatcher.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-05-25

I should have paid more attention to the fine print. Mostly, this is not a soundtrack album. If I want to listen to all the songs as they are performed in the film, it seems I will have to get the DVD.

If you want to listen to the soundtrack performances of all the songs, then do not get this CD.

2 out of 5 stars Not very authentic, but a couple of good songs.......2007-01-17

This is an okay album if you are just looking for some listenable music, but in general the songs are overdone and not authentic-sounding (as in, they don't sound like mountain music but like something produced in some fancy studio). The exception is Iris DeMent's "Pretty Saro," which is an absolute gem and perhaps makes the album worth buying for just this one song!!! There are some good songs on here, but if you are looking for real Appalachian tunes, you'll not find much of that. Of course, many of the singers have fantastic voices, so that's one plus. There are a lot of really good authentic albums out there, but this isn't one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Songcatcher - The real soundtrack.......2007-01-16

My mother loves this CD so much I had to buy her another, one for her home & one in the car. My grandmother and aunt loved the music & movie too, and now my 9 year old is singing some of the quirky songs too. They highly recommend it for people that like the movie or this type of music.

1 out of 5 stars Bad.......2007-01-02

Nothing good to say about this... overproduced and does not capture spirit of the movie. Get "Songcatcher II" instead.

My Bloody Valentine's entire career has been aiming toward the perfect guitar noise that Kevin Shields has in his head: a pure, warm, androgynous but deeply sexual rush of sound. Loveless is overwhelming, with Shields and Bilinda Butcher's guitars and voices blending into each other until they become a distant orchestra, the rhythm section striding in majestic lockstep, and occasional bursts of dance rhythms (as on the single "Soon") buoying the live instruments' warp and drift. Furiously loud but seductive rather than aggressive, the album flows like a lava stream from one track into another, subsuming everything in the mix into its blissful roar, and pulsing like a lover's body. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Just extraordinary in every sense of the word........2007-07-05

Still the greatest shoegazer album ever made (and arguably the first), "Loveless" is one of those rare albums that must be listened to dozens of times in order to be thoroughly appreciated, and once that happens, one can listen to "Loveless" countless times without growing tired of it. My Bloody Valentine's previous album, "Isn't Anything," perhaps hinted at brilliance, but it's not in the same league as "Loveless" which remains one of my top ten favorite rock albums.

With the swirling feedback sonic-drenched guitars, and the minimilist haunting vocals (Bilinda Butcher and Kevin Shields), "Loveless" sounds like nothing else before or since. No fewer than six songs completely blow me away: "Only Shallow," "Loomer," "When You Sleep," "Come in Alone," "Sometimes" (sung so beautifully by Kevin), and then, after somewhat of a lull, the incredibly gorgeous finale "Soon." For me, so many emotions emerge during what feels more like a profound journey than a mere listening experience.

My question is how could Kevin Shields and his bandmates put out something so unique and wonderful and then never release another album again? I don't know if they would have ever reached these heights again, but they certainly could have tried. Fortunately MBV inspired many other bands, some who carried on the shoegazer mantle quite well. Right now, for instance, I've been listening alot to Voyager One and Bethany Curve, both who owe MBV big-time.

I think I would stand on line all night in the rain to see a reunited MBV perform "Loveless" live. I'm not sure I could say that about any other band and album.

P.S. - Above, I mentioned that this album was one of my top ten favorite rock albums. Here they are (in no particular order):

Loveless
Stone Roses - self titled album
In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
Disintegration - The Cure
Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - Genesis
Born to Run - Springsteen
Who's Next - The Who
Beggar's Banquet - The Rolling Stones
To Our Children's Children's Children - The Moody Blues
Joshua Tree - U2

To my fellow shoegazer fans, may I recommend:

Ferment - Catherine Wheel
Nowhere - Ride
Monster Zero - Voyager One
Gold - Bethany Curve

5 out of 5 stars The best album ever?.......2007-04-29

Is this the best album ever made?

I'm not sure about that... but i am sure that its up there with the likes of The Stone Roses, Pet Sounds and White Album.

It is without doubt my fave record ever... even beating The Stone Roses debut album. Whats more i still have my Loveless tour t-shirt :-)

Why Kevin Shields and Belinda Butcher never released a follow-up is a complete mystery to me. It may still happen though...

Personal fave of mine on the album is Only Shallow.

If you like this album you will love "You made me realise"... a fantastic tune.

5 out of 5 stars Strange and gorgeous aural mystery.......2007-04-23

I'm an unlikely admirer of this record. 51 years old. Taking Lipitor. Bifocals. But, I've spent the last two years or so listening to this CD at least once a week. It's also an unlikely CD to admire. Perfectly reasonable people with refined tastes can be bewildered, even frightened by it. It breaks most of the rules that are supposed to apply to rock music. Brian Eno famously referred to the "vagueness" of the music and that's dead right. But, all I can say is that it magically finds some system in my brain that I have in common with lizards and plays it like a cheap guitar. It's wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Some More Insight (read if you don't understand this album).......2007-03-18

Ok, i finally stopped sleeping on this record and let me just say ... before you go hating it l-e-t i-t s-i-n-k i-n-t-o y-o-u f-i-r-s-t..i tell you i have seriously worn out my ipod playing this.. its pure euphoria falling asleep with it.. because it's like a dream.. its like someone you used to love and be with but now its just a mere thought.. and you wish you could go back to that time, but sitting there weeping you realize even if you did get back together, it would never be as it once was.

to me this record simply defines the use of vocal technique (gorgeous harmonies) guitar rhythm, and drum technique. Mind you there are some tracks that i really do not care for as much as others ("loomer", & "touched" are mediocre at best, and "I Only Said" certainly wears out it's welcome)

With that being said, there are some absolutely hands down BRILLIANT moments on this album .. i can't emphasize enough the vocalist, and his ability to speak to you, reminding you of a far away place, your past, the memory of a strange dream, and that feeling of nostalgia that we all get, but can never go back to what was.

"When You Sleep" is probably the most wonderful display of such i've heard in a long time.. the song itself makes me want to cry and thats how beautiful it is.. it reminds me of a past love, and the lyrics are so on point its chilling.. i'm telling you, this guy can fucking sing .. he reminds me of listening to a yo la tengo tune with some slowdive mixed in.

"Come in Alone" is yet another beautiful piece with all members being perfectly in sync with eachother.. it's breathtaking how these guys play together.. their on another planet.. they all know exactly what eachother is thinking.. and compliment eachother so well.. noone steals the show, their all contributing an equal amount with their respective instruments.

"Blown a Wish" is probably my favorite tune out of the bunch.. a euphoric piece of atmosphere that just makes you wish you just shot up.. i can't even imagine what this record would sound like on dope or something.. i'd probably float to heaven.. thats really the only way i can explain this song. perfection.

"What You Want" is another amazing piece with a number of mini climaxes scattered throughout.. and it never fails to satisfy, and it's a bit faster in pace compared to the rest. the end is ridiculously good and leaves you wanting nothing more because of how fitting it is. shit, it's what i wanted.

"Soon" is pretty good, nothing really to rave about in my opinion, just an all around solid song. (goes on a little to long IMO)

"To Here Knows When" is pretty good, on the same plane as "soon" nothing really to rant about.. i'd rate it as decent compared to the above song.

This leaves me to review "sometimes".. how in the hell do i do that? well the strumming is perfect .. the distortion is perfect.. the lyrics even better.. the climax even better.. the whole vibe is just .... epic.. thats how i'll put it.. THE END of this epic album

i'm giving this 5 stars because the highs heavily outweigh the lows no question.. and i always find myself coming back to this record because of the vocals if nothing else.. prepare to be taken away

one love.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2.......2007-03-17

this album is a regular on greatest albums of all-time lists that i see. upon first listen i hated it. upon second listen, i still hated it. i am up to about a dozen listens now (i like to give things a chance), and, as you see, it's up to 4 1/2 stars in my book. i am now fascinated by this thing. this is like the beautifully demented music of some dream in a warp zone dimension. walls of sound piled onto walls of sound. waves of noise. pulsing speed shifts. often the music is static (by this i mean there is a lack of forward motion), like it is running in place. these static motifs create tension that builds and are not always resolved. i firmly believe that you can only fully appreciate this album if you listen on headphones. my first few listens were blasted through my stereo speakers, and, as i said, i didn't get it. you may need patience with this soundscape. give it plenty. it will pay off. i will say this: your average lynyrd skynryd fan is NEVER going to do anything with this recording except hate it. that is not a rip on lynyrd skynryd, a band i happen to love; it's just a true statement that the AVERAGE skynryd fan will hate this, as will most fans of classic rock. i won't even begin to go into the american idol crowd! anyway, fantastic dreamscape noises for the open minded. i recommend it highly. who cares, right?

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Pikeville, Kentucky, native Patty Loveless has occasionally acknowledged her mountain-music roots on her frequently excellent albums of mainstream country. Hear, for instance, the pained, stoic version of Carter Stanley's "I'll Never Grow Tired of You" on Loveless's 1988 breakthrough, Honky Tonk Angel. Like too few of her 21st-century post-hillbilly peers could do, the singer makes Mountain Soul--an all-acoustic sampling of classics and a handful of new songs--far more than a nod to the style. Loveless's clear voice and sensitivity to narrative lyrics have made ballads her most fertile ground, and here she turns in as consistently affecting a disc as she's ever made. Whether offering a remake of Reno & Smiley's "I Know You're Married (But I Love You Still)," hard-country-influenced duets with Travis Tritt and Jon Randall ("Out of Control Raging Fire" and "Someone I Used to Know," respectively), or a rewritten "Soul of Constant Sorrow," she channels emotion in a straightforward way that could serve as a master class for many current vocalists. Even while celebrating a sound rooted in another time, though, Loveless takes an artistic chance or two: Darrell Scott's long, downbeat story song "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" isn't the record's best cut, but it's one of its most intriguing. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A real gem from Patty.......2007-06-30

The first two cuts on the album didn't move me too much (not that they were bad), but I really started to listen hard later in the album. Patty has THE voice for this kind of music. I almost got the feeling you could close your eyes and go back to the 1950's and you'd hear exactly this same sound and the same instruments. That song about Harlan, KY has a real haunting quality about it, and for me it's definitely one of my favorites. I had bought the album some time ago, listened to it and put it up, but I'm definitely enjoying it more the second time around.

5 out of 5 stars Mountain high.......2007-05-14

In today's country music climate, it's a brave soul who issues a true-blue traditional Bluegrass and Gospel album. Patty Loveless dares and wins, triumphantly. This, her eleventh album, failed to get much airplay when released in 2001 (because it was so out of the mainstream) but was a moderate success anyway, and has maintained a steady following since. Quite simply, you'll love this album if it happens to be your 'kind of thing'. Listen to the samples and you'll know if it is or not. Come to think of it, given that used copies are now so cheap, why not give it a try even if you're not sure if it is your kind of thing? It might grow on you.

5 out of 5 stars IPUTONANEWCOAT-KingsportTN.......2007-03-08

The service was great-the music was much better than I expected. The CD was ordered for one song, "Old Coat" but every song on the CD was enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Bluegrass Soul.......2007-01-10

Patty has created a truly wonderful work in bluegrass style that is in my mind her true calling. Country may be more marketable so if she never does another bluegrass album I'll simply thank her for this one and wish her the best.

5 out of 5 stars Patty at her best.......2006-11-29

When you do what you love it shows. I bought this before I went on a road trip through the Smokies (like how no trip through the Rockies can be done w/o a John Denver CD). I was pleasantly suprised and enjoyed it immensely. Patty's voice was made for this type of music.

Other country divas may be younger, sexier, and flashier, yet when it comes to sheer intensity, soulfulness, and powerful yet subtle vocal brilliance, Kentucky-born Patty Loveless towers above the rest. The proof is this gemlike 12-song collection that reprises the commercial highlights of what has thus far proven to be Loveless's vintage years: her four-album, seven-year stint with Epic under the direction of husband Emory Gordy Jr. Three newer tunes round out this "hits" collection, including "My Kind of Woman, My Kind of Man," a pleasant duet with Vince Gill originally found on Gill's The Key. However, these new tracks sound like mere outtakes when sandwiched between so many powerhouse No. 1 singles. Taken in the context of Nashville's current drift toward trivializing and even dumbing down mainstream country's traditional strengths and values, Loveless's performances on Classics sound more like some fiery brand of musical salvation than mere artistic brilliance. --Bob Allen

5 out of 5 stars Love Loveless.......2007-07-09

This CD is great intro to Patty Loveless. The songs have good music and good lyrics. Patty sings them with a very clear and expressive voice. She can do uptempo fun stuff and her ballads are nowhere near boring, they have impact. Good songs:

Can't Get Enough - choppy with energy

You Can Feel Bad

Lonely Too Long - slow song about guy and woman who had relations just cuz they were lonely so long, is that a cause for shame?

Just Wanna Be Loved by You

You Don't Even Know Who I Am - marriage failed where neither party communicated with or engaged the other.

Blame It On Your Heart - awesome, fun, uptempo tune. If only more country were like this.

I Try to Think About Elvis - another fun uptempo number. Great witty lyrics.

This belongs in any collection of female country singers.

5 out of 5 stars Classics All the Way.......2007-04-17

Patty Loveless' 'Classics' is a great album. My favorite song is 'Blame it on Your Heart'-fun melody, snappy lyrics, excellent performance.

5 out of 5 stars NOW THIS IS REAL COUNTRY!! .......2005-09-30

Pop divas like Faith Hill, Martina McBride and Reba aren't fit to wipe Patty Loveless' shoes. Whether she's doing bluegrass or country like this Patty is the absolute best!!! She has never compromised to do what sells like a certain redhead in country music we all know. Patty is the real deal and this CD will give you a great example of why she is just that....real country!!

5 out of 5 stars A FLAWLESS CD.......2004-12-31

Patty Loveless's work in the 80s and 90s was exceptional (It is a shame that she shifted to bluegrass (Maybe because she can't get any airplay on country stations? Which favors stuff like Faith Hill, who can't even carry Patty's microphone.).As for this CD, it is exceptional, you cannot get much better on a single disk than this (Maybe Toby Keith's Greatest Hits 2?). Songs like "I Think About Elvis", "Lonely Too Long", "Blame It On Your Heart". "Here I Am", and "How Can I Help You Say Goodbye?" (A real heartwrenching song, and this is from an alpha male), are country classics. And the rest of the CD does not have a weak song either. Patty Loveless blows away just about any other female country singer since Patsy Cline with the exception of Sherrie Austin (Another singer who cannot get airplay). There is beauty, humor, sadness, and most of all INTELLIGENCE in her music. Patty is country for people who love intelligent, well thought out, and original lyrics. I would highly recommend getting this CD, then go out an get her "Greatest Hits" CD for material such as "Timber" and "Chains" (That CD also gets 5 stars, but is a little weaker). Simply put this is a flawless CD.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Compilation.......2004-03-26

Patty Loveless is perhaps one of the last true country female singers. Before the pop-oriented divas such as Faith Hill and Martina McBride hit the scene and stole the thunder from real country music, Patty Loveless was on the verge of becoming the female country star. She is a star in her own right, by all means, and this collection does her catalog justice. It's an enjoyable compilation with touching ballads and catchy upbeat country songs both. The duets with Vince Gill and George Jones work perfectly. Well worth the money if you want some solid country music performed by a female with a true country voice.

3 out of 5 stars good cd patty loveless.......2007-05-07

patty lovelace is an artist that when she has a hit its a hit, when she has an average song its just that.this sums up this collection.i believe she changed labels and mabay this is why not all here best material is here?or else the record company is smart to leave some stuff off so you have to buy another compilation. the best thing to do is make your own patty loveless hits cd yourself putting her best material on, we all know what her hits are.with some big hits missing and some average album cuts through out this could be for you.

5 out of 5 stars Total class.......2005-12-31

Patty Loveless is unknown to the vast majority of Australians, but after picking up an album (any one will do) in a sale for $5, my partner and I played it almost daily for months and were more impressed at each listen. So we ordered this collection to catch up.
We particularly like the rock/blues side of female country - Shelby Lynne, Sheryl Crow - but we also adore Patsy Cline. Patty bridges the gap while never really leaving the country realm. If you look at her album covers over the years, it's a roller-coaster ride of image changes, but the music hasn't jumped aboard.
The latest album is just as convincing as these older highlights(the odd, redundant cover version is sneaking in, but everyone's playing that game these days). Patty and her band blow the opposition away, in the nicest possible way, seemingly without trying, which of course is the secret.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive MCA hits collection.......2005-07-15

I became a huge fan of her music following my purchase of her debut album, simply titled Patty Loveless (on the MCA label) soon after its release. It seems that I was one of a small number of such fans because the album did not sell in vast quantities. You get a fair idea of the quality of that album from the first four tracks here (Lonely days lonely nights, Wicked ways, I did, After all). Two of these songs are by Karen Staley, who has become a prolific country songwriter but never made it as a singer in her own right.

Patty's second album (If my heart had windows) maintained the quality of the first but didn't provide the big breakthrough. It is represented here by You saved me (an original song), the title track (one of the best covers of a George Jones song that I've heard) and A little bit in love (another outstanding cover, this time of a Steve Earle song).

Patty's career gathered momentum with her third album(Honky tonk angel), which yielded two country number one hits (Timber I'm falling in love, Chains) and three other country hits (Blue side of town, Don't toss us away, Lonely side of love). All five are included here. This was Patty's most successful album during her period with MCA. I guess it wasn't easy being on the same label as Reba McEntire and it got harder when Trisha Yearwood joined the label and achieved instant stardom.

Patty's fourth album (On down the line) did quite well but less so than its predecessor. It is represented here by Night's too long (written by Lucinda Williams), I'm that kind of girl, Blue memories and the title track.

Patty's fifth and last album for MCA is also represented by four tracks (Hurt me bad in a real good way, Jealous bone, Can't stop myself from loving you, Nobody loves you like I do). By the time of its release, MCA were much more interested in Trisha than Patty and may not have committed themselves wholeheartedly to marketing the album. With Reba selling more records than ever before, it was no surprise to anybody that Patty left MCA. I'm also a huge fan of Reba and Trisha so I can understand the difficulty that one label would have in keeping all three happy.

Following those twenty tracks taken from her five original MCA albums, there are two from her subsequent career with Epic. Those two tracks (You can feel bad, Lonely too long) both made number one on the country charts but their presence here isn't strictly necessary as they can be found on one of her original Epic albums (Trouble with the truth) as well as a compilation (Classics) that focuses on her Epic recordings, but they are welcome here anyway.

For Patty's committed fans, there can be no substitute for buying the original albums, but this is a magnificent collection of Patty's early music. Although Patty achieved greater commercial success with her Epic recordings, her MCA recordings were every bit as good.

5 out of 5 stars Loveless' MCA Years Highly Underrated.......2005-07-10

Though Patty Loveless emerged with increased commercial success after her move to Epic, she had consistently produced high quality work during her tenure with MCA, with head-scratching, mid-level to ultimately diminishing returns(at least retail-wise, and probably in no small part due to MCA's push of Reba, then Trisha Yearwood, then solo Wynonna, but that's another story). Nevertheless, her years at MCA definitely laid the groundwork for greater things to come, and this compilation supercedes anything previously released by the label with regards to throughly covering Loveless' catalog while at MCA. She did in fact have numerous hits(dual number ones "Timber, I'm Falling In Love" and "Chains"), but also released songs that didn't hit as big but nonetheless remain some of the finest work she's released(a sterling cover of Lucinda Williams' "The Night's Too Long", as well as the could-have-been Patsy Cline classic "Can't Stop Myself From Loving You"). The inclusion of two of her Epic number ones("You Can Feel Bad" and "Lonely Too Long")seems somewhat odd in context, but nevertheless this is a very fine overview of arguably the most commercially underrated mainstream country artist(male or female) of the last twenty years.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2005-06-11

At last ... MCA has FINALLY released a COMPLETE compilation of Loveless' singles with that label. Forget "Greatest Hits" (10 songs), "Sings Songs Of Love" (10 songs) and "20th Century Masters" (12 songs). This is the CD that compiles all 19 of Patty's singles with MCA - from her first five pre-Top 40 singles through later Number Ones such as "Timber I'm Falling In Love" and "Chains" and up to her final single, "Can't Help Myself From Loving You," with MCA. The CD also boasts two #1's, "You Can Feel Bad" and "Lonely Too Long," released on her current label, Epic. All songs are the original versions and presented chronologically with decent liner notes.

Patty Loveless has spent her career choosing between country pop and hardcore country, and she's produced masterpieces in both styles (Long Stretch of Lonesome and Mountain Soul, respectively). But now it seems she's sick of having to choose at all. On Your Way Home is built equally around the boot-scooting rhythms of contemporary country and the phrasing, melodies, and instrumentation of honky-tonk and bluegrass. For instance, "I Don't Want to Be that Strong" begins, hushed, in a manner as perfect for a front-porch performance by fiddle and guitar, then skyrockets into right-now power ballad territory even as an old-school pedal-steel guitar keeps wanging away. She cries here at a grandfather's funeral; gets so horny, on the Rodney Crowell-penned first single, that she calls in sick; goes carousing on Buddy and Julie Miller's "Lookin' for a Heartache Like You"; and on the title track, confronts a husband about where he stops on his way home from work. Loveless' every strangled, knotty note is classic in content and contemporary in execution. And vice versa, too. --David Cantwell

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Queen of Country, Beautiful and Genuine Music.......2007-05-25

While Mountain Soul is undeniably my favorite of Patty's albums, this one is the most brilliant and satisfying mixture of traditional country and accessibility. All of her prior albums contain songs seemingly included to garner airplay to draw unfamiliar fans into her music, and they weren't always representative. "I Think About Elvis" comes to mind. None of that is present on On Your Way Home. On this one, Patty and husband/producer Emory have undoubtedly hit the perfect formula for her style and voice. To echo other reviewers, this is a "home run," and country music "can't possibly get better than this."

If you're unfamiliar with her work, "Lovin' All Night" and "Draggin' My Heart Around" will be immediately appealing. "I Wanna Believe" is uptempo fun in the same vein. No where has Patty been more emotive or plaintive than on the title track (my favorite). "Born Again Fool" would have fit on Mountain Soul perfectly. "The Grandpa I Knew" is reminicient of the earlier "Where I'm Bound" and "She Never Stopped Loving Him" or even her performance with Vince Gill, "Go Rest High on that Mountain." No contemporary artist conveys melancholy like Patty. Maybe it's her eastern Kentucky roots.

This is the perfect vehicle for her emotional resonance. It is inspired and inimitable; no other country diva expresses the range of emotions that Patty does. I admit to bias; I've been a huge fan for about 15 years, but her music just keeps getting better.

4 out of 5 stars Real McCoy without the twang..........2004-10-19

Now this is good country music...the real McCoy without the twang and so much better than what the music industry tries to pass off as country. There are lots of guitars, fiddles and pedal steel giving this CD a real down-home rootsy feel. Loveless possesses an excellent voice that emotes honestly. The one negative is that none of the songs are hers but she covers some great talent such as Jim Lauderdale, Buddy Miller and Rodney Crowell. The last cut is a real tearjerker called "The Grandpa That I Knew".

4 out of 5 stars A Little Short of the Mountain Soul Standard.......2004-09-23

Among many other sterling attributes, Patty Loveless and/or her husband-producer Emory Gordy sure know how to close out a CD. The Grandpa That I Know tears me up every time, as sure as One Day I Will Lead the Parade, Where I'm Bound and Sounds of Loneliness did on previous albums.

Much of On Your Way Home continues the roots bluegrass of Mountain Soul. Songs like On Your Way Home, Born Again Fool and Higher than the Wall -- all by different songwriters, some of them mainstream country regulars -- nonetheless manage, in the hands of Loveless and her band, to sound as if, to take a lyric from Grandpa, they "never dreamed beyond the county line." There is also a terrific long-term substance abuse song, Last in a Long Lonesome Line, that great though it is simply does not track with the gorgeous Ms. Loveless. Hank Williams, George Jones, yes, but Patty Loveless singing "They say the blood in my body is agin' like wine"? I don't think so.

On Your Way Home lacks Mountain Soul's consistency because two or three cuts yank it back as close to country FM radio bland as Loveless gets. Looking for a Heartache Like You, ironically co-written by the enormously talented Buddy and Julie Miller -- along with Jim Lauderdale --, is just dull. And where The Boys are Back Again immediately introduced Mountain Soul as a fresh, traditional sound, Draggin' My Heart Around and Nothin' Like the
Lonely are good but nothing that grabs you and won't let go.

Stay out of the city, Patty, stay in Harlan County and think about doing some writing or arranging of your own, as on a couple Mountain Soul songs.

5 out of 5 stars Last album for MCA.......2004-04-25

This album opens with the brilliant rocker, Jealous bone. There several wonderful ballads including such quality offerings as Nobody loves you like I do, I already miss you like you're gone, If you didn't want me, If it's the last thing I do and Can't stop myself from loving you.

As ever, Patty is supported by some of the best musicians and backing singers. Vince Gill has often provided backing vocals, but more surprising is the appearance of Dolly Parton on the mid-tempo song, Waiting for the phone to ring, and Lyle Lovett on a cover of his own song, God will.

Two excellent mid-tempo songs (Hurt me bad in a real good way, I came straight to you) complete a classic but frequently overlooked album.

As this was Patty's last MCA album, it may not have received the promotional effort that it would have had if she had stayed with the label, but no committed Patty fan should overlook it.

5 out of 5 stars PATTY AT HER BEST!.......2003-12-03

Thank God Sony saw what MCA never could...that Patty Loveless is a force to be reckoned with! This, the last of her MCA output is evidence of that!

This CD is Patty at her best. She particularly stands out on "Up Against My Heart", "Hurt Me Bad" and gives the chill bumps a work out with "Can't Stop Myself From Loving You" which, if MCA had promoted properly could have been a #1 single, instead of promoting all that drivel they call 'country'. This is not drivel..this is true country and you can bet your money on it! Patty Loveless never disappoints and this is one of her most underrated CDs!!

5 out of 5 stars Loveless' MCA Peak.......2002-09-02

Patty Loveless' best album with MCA also marked her swan song for the label. Though the album spawned the rockers 'Jealous Bone' and 'Hurt Me Bad(In A Real Good Way)', it remains one of her least commercially successful records, despite maintaining and surpassing the quality of her previous albums. 'Can't Stop Myself From Loving You', in which Loveless sounds like she's inhabited by Patsy Cline, is itself alone worth the price of admission. Her deep-rooted mountain soprano remains one of the great instruments of modern country, and those who discovered Loveless after she started hitting big with her Sony albums would be doing themselves a huge disservice by not checking out was is inarguably the most underrated album in her deep catalog.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of Hits Here.......2002-03-21

Loveless 5th MCA release finds her in hit territory once again. Kostas' John Fogerty-inspired intro riff of "Jealous Bone" established new rock territory for Loveless and became her first hit from this effort. Since she was a rock vocalist for many years, it's a perfect fit here and "Jealous Bone" stretched the boundaries of modern-day country music. The retreating, countrypolitan "Hurt Me Bad (In A Real Good Way)" was a big hit which further solidified Loveless as a superstar. Perhaps the best moment from this CD is her version of Lyle Lovett's "God Will," which comes awful close to his wry, cynical original version. Loveless compromises her bluegrass roots on this effort, nearly abandoning the stark, gritty instrumentation of her earlier efforts in favor of stringed arrangements on some songs. The result was increased CD sales, making MCA happy, but the tentative feel of "Up Against My Heart" leaves the listener wondering if Loveless was happy.

4 out of 5 stars Loveless, Clear and Strong.......2000-10-12

I was knocked over by the WOMEN OF COUNTRY television special a few years ago, and among the moments that blew me away (other than Tammy Wynette's striding onto the stage during the entire all-star group's rendition of Chapin Carpenter's "Everything We Got, We Got the Hard Way") was Patty Loveless' singing the heart-tugging lyrics "I woulda never found you, if he had wanted to stay -- oh he hurt me bad, in a real good way!" Man, what a lady. I bought this album and others of Loveless' shortly thereafter, to my great pleasure.

She knows how to pick tunes with fascinating lyrics. "Timber, I'm Fallin' in Love" (on another album) is also a personal favorite that shows both her humor and her willingness to sing songs of personal vulnerability. A strong, clear female voice, and deserving of all the attention she may get, I prefer her sincerity to the flashier stylists currently on the scene. I liked her fine as a brunette, but I understand the marketing pressure, and what she does with her hair is truly unimportant to this fan.

Never before has Patty Loveless mediated so gracefully between bluegrass tradition and superior songcraft from a wide range of sources. Fiddles and mandolins abound throughout Dreaming My Dreams' largely acoustic arrangements, but they are put to the service of material that extends from a propulsive, album-opening rendition of Richard Thompson's "Keep Your Distance" to the rollicking honky-tonk of Delbert McClinton's "Same Kind of Crazy" to the title-song reverie, a signature tune for the late Waylon Jennings. Loveless teams with Dwight Yoakam for a revival duet of the Delaney & Bonnie hit "Never Ending Song of Love," while Emmylou Harris adds soulful harmonies to "When Being Who You Are Is Not Enough." A mood of meditative melancholy pervades much of the music, as exemplified by the intimacy Loveless brings to Steve Earle's "My Old Friend the Blues." The selection of stellar material showcases and broadens Loveless's range as an interpretive stylist, one of the finest in contemporary country. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Patty "the Hottie" Loveless--Burning up the Tracks.......2007-01-10

On these tracks Patty Loveless does the perfect merge of Bluegrass and Country/Western.

Her dulcet tones waft achingly above the mainly acoustic instrumentation, while the more electric sounds of her style of Country/Western add edge to the overall sound.

Do NOT miss the awesome harmony between herself and Dwight Yoakam on the classic, "Never Ending Song of Love."

5 out of 5 stars She's Great -- As Always.......2006-11-15

As a huge fan of Patty Loveless, I am already inclined to like her music. That said, fans will not be disappointed, and those who aren't fans will be pleasantly surprised. She dives into the 12 tracks (plus a bonus snippet) and, as always, her voice carries an honesty that goes straight to the heart, as well as to matters of the heart: Listen carefully to "When Being Who You Are Is Not Enough" or "Everything But the Words." There's more to life than heartache, of course -- "Never Ending Song of Love for You" -- and, in the next track, how can you resist a song that includes the line "Girl, you're crazy as a bat, you ain't gonna marry that!"

In addition to her band, she enlisted several names you'll recognize: Lee Roy Parnell, Emmylou Harris, Dwight Yoakam and bassist Barry Bales among them. Embrace your inner twang -- you'll be singing along and tapping the steering wheel in short order.

5 out of 5 stars EVERY CUT STRONG!!!.......2006-10-28

I really didn't expect this CD to be this good but every cut is great. She covers several different style songs here and some are real gems. I especially like "Nobody Here By That Name" and her cover of Delbert McClinton's "Same Kind Of Crazy As Me". The arrangements are tight and very good musicians and backing vocals. Emmylou appears on "When Being Who You Are Is Not Enough" and is great as usual. Her duet with Dwight Yoakam on "Never Ending Song Of Love" is well done. Albert Lee plays guitar on a lot of cuts and Lee Roy Parnell plays slide on "Old Soul"

4 out of 5 stars Another great sing-along-with-Patty-CD!.......2006-09-01

One of the best aspects of Patty Loveless' musical choices, as well as her voice, is that she can take you from sad to happy and back in three-songs flat! Here she accomplishes that feat once again. I especially enjoyed "When Being Who You Are Is Not Enough" and "My Old Friend the Blues." The former is a superb melancholy song with an underlying hope of resolve, accepting who you are when "the right one" doesn't.

4 out of 5 stars Great album by a great country singer........2006-08-28

I really like this album. Patty has the definitive country voice and works magic with the songs. The sound is much the same as the last album, but it focuses on older tunes rather than newly written songs.
My only and biggest complaint is that I can't enjoy this on my mp3 player because of the built in copy protection. It's going to kill the music industry faster than pirating, since I believe most people will just stop buying albums with it. I know I won't buy any more.
