Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

Few could've predicted the flowery, experimental path that UK art-pop ensemble Talk Talk (and later, a solo singing Mark Hollis) would take in its long, colorful career. Songs would lengthen, keyboard-plush arrangements would thicken like trellised ivy, and the group's initial hit-single schematics--so evident on this nicely textured debut album, in definitive cuts like "Talk Talk"--would get lost in the orchestral shuffle. Which is not to say that this nugget from '82 isn't crucial listening. Hollis has one of those inimitable, almost otherworldly voices that sound great in any musical framework. This cd has a way of stimulating the subconscious. Secondly the subconscious recognizes those tones which have some connection to the annonauki (or angels). The only other cd which has the same effect is a new age song called Tingri. On a subconscious level we are sensing incoming armadas of , of what we may consider to be, extraterristial spacecraft, virtual armadas of spacecraft. The tones which will awaken your perception to these events began with the synthesizer. Initially with the horns (cherubin) of the song Sledgehammer. I hope this will clarify the strange attraction many sense, but cannot define.

I bought the album back in 1982 and love it. I've since replaced my vinyl with cds and now mp3's.

The question I have is:
Does the version of the song "Talk Talk" include the 'synth-drum clicks' in the first 5 seconds of the song?

I purchased the version from itunes and it does not include it. That mp3 is from the album "Natural History - The Very Best of Talk Talk" So while I'm pleased to get a great sounding mp3 of the song, I want the first 5 seconds with the 'synth-drum clicks'

Thanks to anyone who can answer the question.

I've been listening to this album since 1983 (ouch). When I first heard it in high school I loved all the uptempo numbers but now w/the advantage of a few years under my belt I see this album in a completely different light. Songs like Candy and The Party's Over lay the groundwork for what this band set out to accomplish on their later recordings. With the exception of the somewhat spotty Laughing Stock, Talk Talk are one of the most consistent and satisfying bands I know of... This CD is a great starting point.

I used to play this record at my work 20 + years ago when it came out. I worked at night in a the stereo department of a department store. We had a record dpartment but this was one of my faves. I listened to everything back then from The Kinks to Sex Pistols to Ultravox to on and on.

This album is still one of my favorite records. The music is almost dreamlike and Mark Hollis voice only adds to the effect. My favorite has to be Mirror Man which to this day is one of my favorite songs after say the Kinks immortal Waterloo Sunset.

I still love this album and I still don't know exactly why.

My room-mate brought home Talk Talk on vinyl from the music store he worked at. Perfect new wave, but wait...what is up with The Partys Over. For those of you that know what I am talking about, be sure to go to the depths of where this song will take you. From that moment on I got my hands on everything that I could find. My favorite band of the eighty's and still one of my pics for the top three bands that I have yet to hear. I only wish that they would put together a live compilation. In my opinion, its the only thing missing.

This maybe The Party's last album,but it's still a great one. I remember when I found out that The Party was disbanding,I was in a gasp. I ran from the book store from the magazine where I was reading the article about The Party and raced over to the record store and there it was. I purchased it took it home and listened to it and Boy,I was surprised by the sound of it. It had no rap songs,but it had a more earthy Urban/Adult Contemporary sound to it. It had three of the songs that were suppose to be on their 3rd album "Free",but never made it. 01.Movin' On-Chasen Hampton kicks off the album with rockin' tune that he penned about moving to the next level of his life and not looking back.02.Sorry-Tiffini Hale pens and performs this sensual and sexual song where she teases a guy about wanting to get her. Very strange,but sexually charged. 03.Yellow Butterfly-Penned and performed by DeeDee Magno and produced by The Soulsonics,the song explains that whatever worries you have,you can leave them behind and be yourself.04.Goin' Down-This song has a huge "Lenny Kravitz" feel to it. This also marked the beginning of the "Jeune" era for Albert Fields,who wrote and produced this song. 05.I Only Want You-A very poppy tune written and performed by DeeDee and Tiffini and produced by Howie Tee (who produced Color Me Badd).06.Let's Hold On To What We Got-DeeDee teams up with an unknown group called Remedy on this ballad. The song sounds a lot like In My Life (from Free) Pt. 2.07.Hot Fun In The Summertime-A Sly and the Family Stone remake. I didn't know this was a remake until 5 yrs. later when I heard it on an oldies radio station.08.Forgive Me Girl-A beautiful song penned (once again) by Albert is about a guy fessing up to what he has done to the woman he loves and admitting that he was wrong about everything.09.You Dropped A Bomb On Me-Another remake on this album,this time of The Gap Band classic. This is also the only song on this album that features the voice of Damon Pampolina (he left the group before they disbanded) on the chorus,while Albert and Chase sing every verse on here.10.Sad Memory-Chase sings and plays guitar on this song talking about a girl who just walks out a guy's life without an explanation or nothing.11.I Wish You Peace-DeeDee ends the album reminding everyone that they should come together as one. This album truly marks the end of an incredible group who took no limits and set the standards for future Mouseketeers to come.

I wouldn't say that it lives up to the groups other albums, but there are several songs that are awesome like, I Wish You Peace, and I Only Want You. It's definately worth buying.

Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.

I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

    Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. From Ethel Merman to Noel Coward, Stritch has worked with some of the greatest names to grace the American stage, and she has anecdotes about all of them (most are included on this recording). In this show, she hits all the marks with the acuity of a seasoned pro who's seen it all and whose love for the theater remains undiluted. Stritch is not a traditionally pretty singer (those gravelly pipes!), but she absolutely knows how to give life to a song, extracting the last drop of meaning, dropping pauses for effect with deadly accuracy. Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Broadway Baby" will be hers forever, and a case could be made for the hilarious "Zip" (from Pal Joey) and the obscure, spectacularly politically incorrect "Civilization" (from the revue Angel in the Wings) as well.     This double CD is stuffed full of great songs and amazing stories. My favorite stories are of Elaine's date with Marlon Brando, what she thought some lyric are/meant, and her time in Compant. The total honesty that she brings it all together is touching and inspiring.

    Very few people have the length or variety of a career that Elaine Stritch has had. I am sure that she has enough stories to do ten more shows.

    If you love Broadway then you must buy this CD.

    The only disappointment is that I missed the show live. This is a terrific honest performance by an actor who has a deep well of experience from which to draw. From her early childhood memories, through acting school, her loves, her struggles and more, Ms Stritch weaves a fascinating and completely enthralling story. Ultimately, she lives the songs, rather than just performs and this is what really marks her out.

    I've never been able to understand what is so great about Elaine Stritch's singing. It's simple: she can't sing. I've tried and tried to like her, and I do, as an actress, but NOT as a singer. Listening to these CDs, all I hear is a grouchy old lady voice with no vibrato, no range, and no ability to hold notes. If she were to try out for American Idol she would get cringes! I love her humor and honesty, and that's why I bought this, but the voice...ugh.

    Very few of us lesser mortals can compete with the genius of Noel Coward, however we certainly can enjoy it! A master of lyric, pun, innendo, and rhyme, Noel will keep all laughing throughout this collection.

    This is a live recording of a Noel Coward performance in the 1950's at the Desert Inn. The songs are quite a bit racier than his usual studio recordings from the 1920's and 30's; all very witty and very fun. A stand out performance of Cole Porter's "Let's Do It" features references to everyone from Somerset Maugham to Senator Joe McCarthy. Unique.

    My old LP was lost in a recent move! I have loved this album along with "Noel and Gertie" since I first heard it at the age of twelve. Sir Noel Coward is not to be missed.

    No one could do a torch song better than Polly Bergen. With her husky, emotion-choked voice, her forte was covered in the majority of her record output with Columbia ('All Alone By the Telephone', 'Four Seasons of Love', 'Bergen Sings Morgan', and 'The Party's Over'). The latter two albums are the ones featured on this CD from the Collectables label.

    In 1957, Polly Bergen played tragic songstress Helen Morgan on an acclaimed episode of television's "Playhouse 90". She captured the spirit of Morgan so convincingly that Columbia brought her into the studio to record an album of Morgan standards. 'Bergen Sings Morgan' was issued as a tie-in with the "Playhouse 90" special, and Bergen received an Emmy nomination for her performance. The public's renewed fascination with Morgan also spurred Warner Brothers Pictures to film THE HELEN MORGAN STORY with Ann Blyth.

    Bergen's voice is still the perfect one to revive the spirit of Morgan, with such numbers as "Why Was I Born?", "Mean to Me", "Body and Soul", and "More Than You Know".

    'The Party's Over' was also recorded during the latter part of 1957, and featured Bergen performing another collection of well-chosen ballads and torch songs. Numbers that are especially fine are "I'm Thru with Love", "It Never Entered My Mind", "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", and "You'll Never Know".

    When I was a young girl, my mother was living a great amount of emotional and romantic drama. Polly Bergen's "Bergen Sings Morgan" was on our record player into the wee hours of the morning as the back score to her troubled life. Mother didn't sleep much during the night. Polly Bergen threw her heart and soul into the Helen Morgan songs. Her delivery was wretching and her voice had just the right amount of smokey pain. It was beautiful. I have been carefully preserving the scratched, though precious original album that belonged to Mother. It brought me memories unlike any music in my life, as it reminds me of a person that has been like no other to me...or to anyone else that knew her for that matter. My God! it's on CD!! I can't wait to hear it again, and again.....and again....

    I absolutley enjoy this cd and perhaps even more so for it's dated sound. I think polly bergen's voice is absolutely amazing and a timeless reminder of a time when music really was music.

    I remember the TV hit back in the late 50's. Her performance of Helen Morgan left an impression on me that I will never forget. I bought the record "The Party's Over" and played until it wore out and then replaced again and again and again. I was thrilled to see that it was replaced in a CD form. I only wish I could get the movie. Polly Bergen is the greatest!!!!

    Polly was brilliant at what she did best - slow, romantic songs. From the opening bars of Don't ever leave me, you know you don't want to leave her - at least until you've played the whole CD.

    Many of these songs are classics from the Great American Songbook, written by such notables as Richard Rodgers, George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and others.

    Some of the songs are famous (Smoke gets in your eyes, You'll never know, Ev'ry time we say goodbye) while others are obscure, but Polly is in excellent voice throughout. Sometimes, the backing musicians are more prominent than they need to be, but it's a minor criticism - they never get in the way of Polly's lovely voice.

    This is a brilliant collection by a wonderful singer who is better known as an actress. Even so, if you haven't got any of Polly's music, I recommend Polly's other twofer (All alone by the telephone / Four seasons of love) ahead of this one. It's even better !!!!
