Everything about this CD, from its eye-popping cool packaging to its beautiful booklet, is wonderful, perhaps peerless. It's a study that spans 16 countries, catching paeans to childhood sleep from varied traditions. The set traverses the Cape Breton Gaelic tradition with the Rankin Family, Haiti with pop stars Boukman Eksperyans, and the African continent with music from Tonga, Algeria, and Cameroon. Despite their distances from each other, at times the songs sound quite alike. Voices might begin alone but then gather into choral size, with a reliance on wordless passages to emphasize the flow of time as sleep encroaches. In execution, the surprises are many. Algerian Houria Aïchi sounds East Indian; the Traditional Japanese Music Ensemble of New York sounds poised somewhere between a stately concert of historical court music and a touching homage to childhood; and German singer Michelle sounds pop-music ready even as she toes the line on singing a sleep-triggering song. Beyond being a great collection of international music, this is probably the most interesting mix available of cultural voices approaching the issue of children sleeping. --Andrew Bartlett

3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-06-10

I purchased this CD in conjunction with another CD with lullabies for a friend who had just had a baby. She said the music is fine but it's got an audio portion that is totally useless for her. She said she's not been able to get the CD to play just the music w/out the video portion.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-05-12

I love this CD and so does my daughter. I have been putting her to sleep with this CD since the day she was born (she is now 10 mths old). I have bought this CD for a few friends of mine and they also love it. Great buy.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful compilation of world lullabies.......2007-01-10

It's a wonderful compilation of world lullabies. It's good all over the world - doesn't matter if your baby is from Mars or Paris, Amazon or New York, it definitely works!

5 out of 5 stars If you only get one lullabye cd, this should be it.......2007-01-04

We have over a dozen lullabye cds, and this is the only one we have worn out from constant use, and are replacing for baby #2. My daughter got hooked from the first track, Chi Mi Na Mór-Bheanna. As soon as it would come on, she would calm down and focus, and the other tracks would lull her to sleep. When we made the mistake of forgetting it at home on a road trip, I had to sing it to get her to stop crying (still learning the gaelic words to that!). It is a brilliant, well-compiled, album of tracks you won't find elsewhere (and which won't bore you, the parent). I have given it over and over as a baby present; it is tried and true. An earlier reviewer commented that the tracks were jarring; we don't find them to be, but then again, we don't like "new age" music (i.e., Wyndam Hill) because we find it too monotonous, so it is a question of musical tastes. Just an added note: the version featured of the classic French lullabye featured, Fais do-do, is truly lovely.

3 out of 5 stars so-so sounds.......2006-08-03

This CD is okay, but has a number of high-pitched, almost whiny songs that aren't very soothing. It wasn't what I was expecting out of a lullaby CD.

This album is not my favorite - but I cannot live without it. It takes a prominent place in my Rankin Collection.

5 out of 5 stars still terrific!.......2007-01-04

This cd has all the songs i remembered from my, uh, college days, and they are all still great. i was happy to find it after all these years.

5 out of 5 stars "Peaceful" is the perfect title for this CD........2006-11-03

When Paul McCartney became "Sir Paul McCartney," he invited Kenny Rankin to the ceremony. Sir Paul said that, "No one sings 'Blackbird' better than you do.'"

This is a sweet, jazzy CD.

5 out of 5 stars A great re-encounter.......2005-03-01

I first heard Kenny Rankin's "Haven't we met" in a radio station WFM in Mexico City back in 1986, and I was overwhelmed by his unusual voice and skill on the guitar. Today, I heard this song again in another radio station, and decided to look up for his material. This has been indeed a warm re-encounter with his music.

5 out of 5 stars You Will Love This CD.......2004-02-15

I first heard Kenny Rankin on WNEW-FM 102.7 circa 1967. He is one of the most talented people in the music business. For those of you who remember Johnny Carson, you might be interested to know that he was a guest on that program more than anyone else during Carson's career. Listen to the samples. The greatest compliment is Paul McCartney's: he invited Kenny to his induction the the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" because "No one performs Blackbird better than you." His Beatle cover versions are not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY THE BEST.......2005-03-15

I have listened to Kenny for about 30 years and he has always been that unique talent and voice that was a cut above the rest. This compilation is the best that he has ever put together. I have seen him in concert several times and have tickets to see him in Albany, NY in April. He mesmerizes his audience and his voice is as fresh as it was all of those years ago. He is honest and open about himself and shares that with his listeners. Where Do You Start,I've Just Seen a Face,Spanish Harlem and Then I'll Be Tired of You are as good as it gets in touching the soul and setting a mood. They take you to another place. Kenny and his voice and guitar are pure genius and he understands that it is a gift and shares it with us. This is the best at his best. Thank you Kenny.

5 out of 5 stars Just perfect........2004-04-29

Rankin is one of the rarest of singers: someone who sounds almost the same today as he did 20 or 25 years ago. This is an album of impeccably performed standards, the standout being his gentle bossa-nova-style rendering of Harold Arlen's "When The Sun Comes Out." A gem.

5 out of 5 stars Rankin Rules!.......2003-06-19

After catching Kenny's unforgettable show last week at the Plush Room in SF, I purchased "A Song for You". I also pulled out my old LP's of his and had a Kenny Rankin Revival festival for days. Not only is he graced with a beautiful voice and great musicianship, but he's so charismatic on stage as well. Treat yourself to this artist's latest CD, and I'm certain you will be more than pleased with what you hear/feel from Kenny's interpretation of these particular songs.

5 out of 5 stars Like Butta.......2003-04-22

As a musician, and long time Kenny Rankin fan, I was thrilled to listen to "A Song for You." I'll cut to the chase - Buy this album, bring it home, dim the lights, open a bottle of Merlot, light a fire in the fireplace, and share each of these musical masterpieces with someone you love. "I've Just Seen a Face" is pure genius. The only criticism here is that I could have used about 10 more cuts.

I have loved this album since the first time I heard it in the seventies. I have never grown tired of the unmatched vocal stylings of Kenny Rankin and still listen to this album regularly. The songs are beautiful, sometimes haunting, sometimes fun, but never boring. There are so many talented singers in the world, but none quite like Rankin. His voice is pure silk, pure control, perfect pitch. Of course, we all have different tastes in music, but your time won't be wasted for trying something as unique as this.

5 out of 5 stars Just a few words...........2003-09-15

I have lived on Cape Breton Island for most of my 27 years. I have heard of many artists that have come from this beautiul Island and I am proud to be part of the tradition that exists here. I have listened to some of the music as well, and it brings me back home by the ocean everytime. I had no idea what heritage existed here, and I encourage those of you who have heard of Cape Breton Island to take in some of the music that is produced from artists who are take pride in every note that they produce. These artists deserve more appreciation and they will get more from me. The Rankin's (just to name a few artists from here) are awesome and I will make sure that they are within listening distance wherever I go.

5 out of 5 stars Canada's Best Kept Secret!.......2002-09-07

A friend of mine at work knew of my love for good folk music and gave me a copy of this CD for my birthday. All I can say is that I'm glad she did! This is an absolutely lovely compilation of some of the best modern eclectic folk that I've ever heard. Though my tastes in folk music definately run toward the ethnomusicological/authentic, I have to make exceptions for groups as lovely as this.

The Rankin Family hails from Cape Breton in Nova Scotia. On of the most far-flung of Gaelic speaking areas, Cape Breton has kept pure the traditions of their Scots ancestors, with a fair mix of North American folk and sea chantey traditions. The Rankin Family is steeped in these traditions, singing ancient songs in Gaelic, with a beautiful choral blend. The men in the group are also excellent instrumentalists...the late John Rankin's fiddle playing is wonderful in an authentic Gaelic style.

But the Rankins are not just traditionalists. They also sing contemporary "celtic revival" songs and some things that have an almost country flair (not a fan of country myself, but this stuff is really good.) The songs reflect their love of Cape Breton and of the sea. I found myself haunted by so many of the tunes on this album.

And the singing is marvelous. The family is blessed with wonderful voices, particularly the women. The harmony is dense and absolutely pure. It reminds me of the best of family groups in the Appalachians and in Ireland. Highlights of the album include the lovely Gillis Mountain and Rise Again, which I can't stop listening to.

This is pure music, filled with love of people and land. There is a sweetness in the music that touches me deeply. If you like Clannad, Mary Black, or the McGarrigle Sisters, you will love this music. I can't recommend this album highly enough!

5 out of 5 stars Good golly.......2000-07-16

Ever since I passed through Mabou, the delightful little Nova Scotian hometown of the Rankins, I have been dying to buy one of their recordings, and boy am I glad it was this one. The powerful lyrics and harmonies beautifully express the hundreds of years of struggles that Cape Bretoner's experienced. "Roving Gypsy Boy" tells the all-too-familiar tale of an individual searching for his place in life, and "Rise Again" proudly boasts that "we" (Nova Scotians in the case of the Rankins) take back seat to nobody. The tale of a Cape Bretoner then continues with tracks like "Christy Campbell Medley," an arrangement which represents the good old fashion fiddling that many Bretoners use to relieve the stress after a long hard day's of work. The CD then concludes with a highly energized rendition of "The Mull River Shuffle," a piece which leaves the soul feeling refreshed. I am ecstatic to add this recording to my Celtic collection of more than 40 CDs, and I highly recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars What an introduction!.......2000-02-17

Sadly, I only learned of The Rankins upon hearing of the death of brother John Morris Rankin. I ordered "Collection" the next day and was not disappointed. The incredible sibling harmonies are mesmerizing and terribly addictive. I now wake up most mornings with Rankin melodies in my head.

One important note as yet unmentioned by other reviewers is that "Collection" is also a multimedia CD. Pop it in your PC or Mac and you get video clips, photos, history and sound clips from each song on the band's preceding albums. Very well done and a great bonus! I want all my CDs to be like this.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant group.......2000-01-21

The Canadian group The Rankin Family is absolutely phenomenal. Singer/songwriter Jim Rankin is an absolute genius, and the rest of the family complement him wonderfully. "Fare Thee Well Love" is a most beautiful song. Too bad only Canada got to hear this amazing group. Also, god bless the late John Morris Rankin. He will be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Better and Better.......2007-07-04

The Rankins have given us beautiful music from their very first CD, but Rankin Family Reunion outshines all the rest. I was afraid we'd never hear from them again as a family after John Morris' death, but not only do we get a new CD with no repeats, but one that shows that their voices and music age and blend like fine Scotch. I hope they never deprive us for so long again. It's a sin to let such talent go unheard.

5 out of 5 stars Reunion Rankin Family.......2007-03-20

The Rankin family reunites eight years later and the CD delivers lovely traditional celtic tunes with the harmony that only this family brings to the stage. There are fiddle and piano tracks that John Morris taped before his death. Sunset, written and sung by his daughter Molly, as she plays the guitar while backed up by family members brought tears to my eyes. Molly delivers like her dad and family. The old tunes mixed in with the new find me playing this CD over and over and waiting for the next!!!

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2007-03-20

I am so glad that the Rankin Family is finally back. After the tragedy of losing John Morris, the family stopped recording for several years. This is their first release since then, and there is a haunting maturity to their voices and harmonies. I love this CD, and look forward to more releases from them.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites.......2007-06-14

This was one of the few albums in my small (but highly-selective) LP collection when I was a very broke college student during the '70s. I played it until I wore out the grooves, and I am so excited to have found it in CD format. Every cut is a winner, and after all of these years, this album still gives me chills and thrills.

5 out of 5 stars Back in Print !!!.......2007-05-29

So glad to see that this great CD is back in print after being unavailable for quite a while. That was truly an injustice. I've been a fan of Kenny since the mid 70s and his jazzy, tranquil vocals and acoustic guitar and nice arrangements are as enjoyable now as back then. This as well as his other music as simply timeless! For $9.98 this CD is a steal!

5 out of 5 stars What a voice and way with a song!!!.......2007-04-09

Kenny Rankin has an unmistakable voice and way with a song. Beautiful, mellifluous and fluid. In this particular recording he tackles well established pieces surrounded by Don Costa's excellent string arrangements.

When Kenny covers a piece it will be done in that unique way that completely reconfigures it. That's the way it should be. Why do it otherwise?

Kenny can take a piece like The Rascals "Groovin'" and put it it in a completely different context, without losing that 'Sunday morning' feel that the piece always had. His vocal here is amazing, giving the piece a bit of drama in the process, when he leads you to an amazing octave leap and fluid modulation. You're airborne in the process.

He can take a saccharine little prom slow dance ditty, like "You Are So Beautiful" into something unique and take it from saccharine to a sense of romance.

"House of Gold" is done with integrity and real feel for the song and it's country leanings.

"When Sunny Gets Blue" is, to my ears, better than the original. With a jazz bass intro and Roy McCurdy's brush work, it becomes a jazzy standard without losing that sense of melancholy the original had.

"On and On" again outdoes the original simply because Kenny is a much better vocalist than Stephen Bishop and he invests himself much more in the song and it's sentiment. The arrangement is crisp and inobtrusive. This his excellent pop single material.

For any fan of good singing in a perfectly symbiotic setting with good accompaniment and arrangment. For any fan of the art of reinterpretation. This is the recording for you.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Kenny Rankin You Have Got To Own.......2007-02-16

This is the real foundation of great love sounds - everyone who loves love must own this album.

5 out of 5 stars Rankin's favorite album.......2006-09-06

I've heard Kenny Rankin say on more than one occasion that if he recorded nothing else in his lifetime, this album would be all he could ask of a career. "Through the Eye of the Eagle" is a masterpiece, as is the surprising "House of Gold;" surprising because this beautiful tune was written by Hank Williams. Do yourself a favor and snap up a copy of this album...although I must say the asking price of it these days is shocking. But for a once in a lifetime collection, this one can't be beat. It's a rare musical experience.

5 out of 5 stars "Because of You . . . There's A Song In My Heart".......2007-04-03

"Because of You" is one of Kenny Rankin's many remarkable albums. It's a collection of eleven of the loveliest songs he recorded, four of which are his original compositions - "Erienda," "Haven't We Met? (the song that turned me on to his wonderful music and became an instant fan), "What Am I Gonna Do With You... Aime?" and an emotional tribute song for his father William Henry Rankin, "This Old Man." It also includes two Bossa Nova numbers, "Doralice" and "Berimbau."

Among my highlights are three of the most exceptional standards ever written: "Someone To Watch Over Me" by George and Ira Gershwin, "I Could Write A Book" by Rodgers and Hart, and A Capella of "Always" by Irving Berlin. Mr. Rankin's extraordinary interpretations of these chestnuts are so pure, lovely and so pleasing to the ears. He made them so special and enchanting with his own unique vocal style.

In this album, which was recorded in New York in 1991, he is supported by a crew of fine musicians - George Young on sax and flute, Danilo Perez on piano, David Finck on bass, Dave Ratajczak on drums and Steve Kroon on percussion.

My number one favorite is the title track, a beautiful and meaningful song by Arthur Hammerstein and Dudley Wilkinson, "Because of You." He sings it with an old-fashioned charm that is simply mesmerizing!

"Because of you there's a song in my heart
Because of you my romance had its start
Because of you the sun will shine
The moon and stars will say you're mine
Forever and never to part

I only live for your love and your kiss
It's paradise to be near you like this
Because of you my life is now worthwhile
And I can smile . . . because of you

I only live for your love and your kiss
It's paradise to be near you like this
Because of you my life is now worthwhile
And I can smile . . . because of you."

This album has a timeless appeal! It's a worthy addition to your collection of fine music. You may also want to check his other notable CDs out - Kenny Rankin Album, Professional Dreamer, After the Roses, Bottom Line Encore Collection, Haven't We Met? and Song for You for more delightful listens.

Wholeheartedly recommended for your listening pleasure always and forever.

3 out of 5 stars Rating Rankin.......2006-11-29

Rankin is a fine vocalist in the Mel Torme, Jon Hendricks(3rd part of the Lambert, Ross trio) mold, like them possessing an impressive elasticity and tonal roundness. This isn't the best Rankin album I've heard. I'd rate,'Inside', 'Silver Morning', or 'The Kenny Rankin' album, above this selection. Occasionally Jesse Winchester comes to mind, but the comparison soon evinces the quality that makes Rankin a populist crooner, and Winchester a more nuanced soul that teeters on the darker rim of of existence: hard to explain, but the latter oozes meaning while toying with pleasantness. While Rankin is simply, pleasant.

5 out of 5 stars Rankin the Way He Should Be Heard.......2003-05-30

Kenny Rankin is known for being one of the best male vocalists out there, but this album is where all the elements of an excellent recording come together - great vocals, understated musicianship that does not detract from or drown his voice out, and last (but not least), fantastic songs. Of final note, Mr. Rankin is finally on a label that puts the highest value on sound quality and production value; Chesky. If you're at all interested in what all the fuss is about Kenny Rankin, give this CD a try. Birembau!

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Voice in America.......2001-11-03

This album proves once again that Kenny Rankin is the greatest singer in America.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY GREAT!!!.......1999-10-06

This album really excites me for this include one of my favorites "Someone to Watch Over Me". Kenny really did a good job here, very sexy and smooth. His new version of "Haven't We Met" is awesome. So glad that he finally did an album like this, which took me 5 yrs. of waiting for this to be released here in the Philippines. Lucky me! I was able to get a copy. How I wish he did these 2 songs when he was here for a concert.

5 out of 5 stars Farrell Shines in Verdi, Ponchielli.......2007-02-09

As an artist, Eileen Farrell was all over the chart--opera, concerts, blues, jazz--and she excelled in all of these areas. But, in truth, complete opera performances were rather rare compared to her concerts, recitals, and TV appearances. So we are fortunate to have these selections from two of her most popular portrayals, Leonora in Verdi's La Forza del Destino and the title role in Ponchielli's La Gioconda, performed under the auspices of the New Orleans Opera Association.

Farrell's Leonora is presented virtually complete (only the Inn scene is missing because it was not performed in this production, as was common during this era, even at the MET), and each of Leonora's scenes is presented uncut, allowing the listener to hear her characterization in context rather than as a recital. Farrell is in her prime (this is 1963) and presents a fully-delineated Leonora. Her wide vocal range is evident as the contrast between the quiet beauty of "La vergine degli angeli" in the Monastery scene and the dramatic intensity of "Pace, pace mio Dio" in the last act attest. She is in command of the role, and (contrary to her stated dislike of performing in complete operas), shows remarkable understanding and belief in the character. The rest of the cast is filled out with veterans Ara Berberian, Richard Cassilly, Raymond Michalski, and Nicola Moscona, and (a name new to me), Dino Dondi as Don Carlo. Fabled MET and RCA conductor Renato Cellini brings his usual competence to the performance.

The disc is rounded out with three excerpts from a 1967 New Orleans Opera performance of La Gioconda (under the direction of Anton Guadagno), again with Farrell in the title role. Farrell is every bit as exciting in this performance as she is in the earlier Forza. Farrell's "Suicidio" gains so much from being part of a complete performance, and her command of the role is everywhere evident in these brief selections.

The sound in both operas is in excellent, clear mono, and the liner notes (by Jack Belsom, New Orleans Opera Archivist) provide a concise record of Farrell's numerous appearances in New Orleans.

Highly recommended to all fans of Eileen Farrell.

Interesting that VAI and the New Orleans Opera Archives project chose to issue this cd so soon after releasing complete performances of both Forza (VAIA 1252-3) and Gioconda (VAIA 1255-3) with Zinka Milanov, and within a decade of each other, time-wise. Comparisons are inevitable, but, in this case at least, ultimately useless. Who can choose between the sheer beauty and glorious tone of Milanov, and the sheer volume and dramatic fire of Farrell? Fortunately for us, there is no need to choose--all three releases belong in every serious opera cd collection as souvenirs of two very special sopranos at the top of their form, in performances that recollect a golden era of regional opera performance in America.

Note: The New Orleans Opera is struggling to stay active after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina last year. Portions of the proceeds from the sale of this cd (and all VAI New Orleans Opera Archive recordings) go to support the continued existence of the local company. Your purchase will aid in the New Orleans Opera's recovery effort.

A delightful introduction to a marvelous group. Cookie Rankin sings the melancholy alto lead on the separation ballad, "Borders and Time;" Raylene lends her high soprano to the pastoral paean, "Gillis Mountain;" and Heather belts out "Fisherman's Son." All three sisters are standout lead singers, and when they blend voices on the old Irish folk songs, "My Nut Brown Maiden" and "Tell My Ma," they're overpowering. Fiddler/pianist John Morris Rankin is the family's instrumental whiz who leads the way on a medley of reels. The group's most crucial talent, though, is Jimmy Rankin, who has written some of the finest folk-pop songs of the '90s, both love ballads like "Fare Thee Well" and working-class laments like "Tramp Miner" and "Orangedale Whistle." --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars North Country.......2000-07-21

I bought this blind. I love this CD. It is true chicken skin music! It is addictive. The songs are haunting. I love making a new discovery. All I can say is take a chance on something you have never heard before.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best.......2000-06-27

In a growing genre crowded with talent, the Rankin Family is arguably the best C3 (Contemporary Canadian Celtic) group around. And North Country is their best album. The song writing is inspired and the varied voices of the brothers and sisters, from husky to sweet, knit together beautifully to create a warm, richly textured hour of music.

By the way, it's worth trying to catch the Rankin Family in concert. The sisters bang out a mean step dance.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful, deeply affecting album.......2000-02-27

This is a suberb CD. The Rankins can lift you up, and can break your heart. I bought this CD after hearing the Rankins on a Chieftains CD. I'm so glad I did. "Rise Again", especially, almost always moves me to tears. Just beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Canadian Celtic/Pop Fusion.......2000-02-06

I first heard the Rankins when I was living in Canada with my husband (he's from Nova Scotia). I loved their music at first hearing, and this album only grows better with each listening. As a family with Irish blood all through, and with a husband who loves all things Arcadian, this is a classic for us. Don't hesitate, you'll love the lush harmonies and fabulous vocalizations!

5 out of 5 stars passionate music!.......1999-12-11

I became a Rankin fan a few months back when I happened upon a PBS concert special on TV. What an incredibly talented family. Their music reaches your soul. This CD happens to be my favorite. I could play it over and over and over and over........ Buy it and fall in love. Unfortunately they are no longer touring together.
