Customer Reviews:
Oh Gavin!.......2007-05-09
This dude is so talented. I'm in love with his voice and this album. WOW!
Outstanding.......2007-03-15
Gavin Degraw's CD Chariot is the type of CD that you can listen to over and over again. Its fusion of different genres allows this CD to appeal to a wide range of audiences and demographics. The songs tell a story of love and love lost and gives you the feeling that you are actually walking in his shoes. Although the beats are great, Gavin's voice and writing ability are the selling points for this CD. This is evident when you listen to the stripped version which is an acoustic set of all his songs. This added CD alone is enough reason to purchase this CD.
I Love You.......2007-02-21
Pick this up not knowing it was a two disc special, just wanted to see what it was all about. Fell in love instantly. Gavin DeGraw is the new Van Morisson! . . sensitive, passionate, lyrical. He doesn't possess the typical pop idol voice or much less a crooner's voice, what he has is a lot more. Every emotion, every nuances of each lyric is riding on his unabashingly strong vocals, raw with feelings worn on his sleeve. Makes a girl weak in the knees! Chariot/Stripped is his defining album wether he becames more famous or just a one CD wonder. The second CD is like icing because it showed the process of coming up with the finished product. It was a nice bonus, highly recommend you listen to this one also. Each song so masterfully crafted, so poetically written, most are about longings, falling in and out of love but my favorite is "Over rated." about how after meeting that special someone, everything else seems so ordinary. So for all of you who are in love, pre-falling in love, post break-up, or in the process of breaking up, this one's for you, come on, it's okay to be sensitive, it's okay to sing along, just make sure you're in your car, alone, commuting from work, with the windows closed.
This one's a Winner.......2007-02-17
I bought this CD for the song "Chariot", which I heard every day at work. I love that song, but I had to ask a co-worker who sang it! When the CD arrived, I couldn't wait to play it. I was delighted to discover that the whole CD is excellent, and Gavin DeGraw is no "one hit wonder". The entire work is great listening. The bonus CD is very good too, although I prefer the original recording, personally.
My impressions on Gavin's first CD..........2007-02-05
Follow Through - 4.25 stars. I love this song. It's so innocent.
Chariot - 4.5 stars. We've all heard this one a million times. I think it's a stronger song than Follow Through but they're both good.
Just Friends - 3.5 stars. This song is weaker than the 2 previous tracks. It has alright lyrics though.
(Nice to Meet You) Anyway - 3.75 stars. Stronger than Just Friends, weaker than Follow Through. It makes for a decent song though.
Chemical Party - 3.5 stars. This is a good song. It speaks about a girl who has fun at a party and enjoys everyone but Gavin. He's drunk and she is high...too high to realize him.
Belief - 3.75 stars. This song is kind of weird. I don't really know much about it besides some person defended and captured Gavin's heart...But the lyrics: "When you came to my defense/With a knife/In the shape of your mouth/In the form of your body..." doesn't make too much sense to me. I do like the ending though.
Crush - 4 stars. Thank you, Gavin. You delivered another strong track. I love the composition of this song. Once again, good job!
I Don't Want to Be - 4.25 stars. Gavin's first single. It's a great one at that. Gives off a good message.
Meaning - 3 stars. This song doesn't really do much for me...it's skip able.
More Than Anyone - 3.25 stars. This song is a step up from Meaning but that's not saying much. It really drags on...
Over-rated - 4 stars. This song gets a higher score than some because I really like the lyrics.
The average is 3.795454545. Naturally, I'm going to round up to 4.
Final Grade: 4 stars.

Beautiful.......2007-06-14
This CD is a must have for any Mormon Tabernacle Choir fans. The music is very reverent and gentle, and should also appeal to those not from the LDS church, seeing as how most of the music is common to the wider Christian community. This CD is a fantastic addition to any music collection.
A few bright spots, but also some disappointments.......2007-01-19
It Is Well With My Soul is one of my favorite-favorites and that is the main reason why I bought the CD; it turned out to be a huge let down on this album, they rearranged it so much that I almost didn't recognize it. Be Still My Soul is another reason why I bought it and it's good, but not great. Swing Low Sweet Chariot is where it starts to get good. The last two songs "Thou Gracious God, Whose Mercy Lends"
and "Come, Let Us Anew" are very good reasons to buy this CD, they each have truely powerful passages and make the CD worth having. The Mormon Tabernacle Choirs 2006 release entitled Then Sings My Soul is by far the best that I've heard from them.
This CD Deserves SIX Stars!.......2005-11-05
However, the rating scale has a limit of five. I own over 700 CDs of virtually every type of music. Peace Like A River belongs in a class by itself! I've never written a review before but, after listening to this STUNNING performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I feel compelled to share my praise with that of the five other reviewers. If I were limited to one word, I would use the word "SUPERB" to describe this beautiful and moving CD. SIX stars for Peace Like a River! BRAVO!!!
every good adjective .......2005-08-06
This album is all beauty and solace. The singing is pristine, the arrangements lush and often stirring--never saccharine. As with the previous reviewer, my first listing of "Peace Like a River" brought me to tears (especially "Peace Like a River," the sopranos in "Swing Low," and the bagpipes in "Thou Gracious God"). Buy this one.
Fabulous!.......2005-05-29
The perfect recording to help you recover from a long, hard day. Showcasing the MTC's "new" sound in contemporary choral arrangements with its own orchestra and conductor, "Peace Like a River" brought tears to my eyes in selection after selection during my first listen -- and I'm not normally an emotional person! The title song together with "Deep River," "Swing Low" and "Be Still My Soul" are alone worth the cost of the recording. Get this one!

Not for the faint of heart.......2007-07-03
This is mathcore at it's finest. Amazing melodies interrupted and warped into other melodies, insane guitar riffs, dark lyrics and even a combination of a choir (who's track I enjoy thoroughly as well) into the album. This is not for someone who doesn't enjoy hard, fast alternative metal, however. I enjoy Josh Scogin on the 2 older Norma Jean albums as well as all of the albums the Chariot has come out with. This is just the evolution of his sound. If you like hardcore, try this out.
Good hardcore band.......2007-06-22

Nothing Unfinished.......2007-06-21
I just read a review by Rick and I have to say Im outraged. Every single one of these songs had a building and a closing. I was never left unsatisfied. "The Trumpet" was not out of place, not only was it in the back ground of other songs, but they are also a Christian band. Every song is about God. So tell me that song is out of place. Its not like all other songs on the cd, but if every song was the same, why would I want to listen to it? This was a good following to their "Unsung" release. Not in comparison, but it still let me know why I love the Chariot.
Another huge mistake Rick made was calling them "noise." They are a hardcore Christian band. Plain and simple. Every song on their albums are related with God. If you don't want every song about God, then I suggest Norma Jean. Which used to be, Norma Jean and The Chariot one in the same. If you are going to review, realize that if you want noise then stick to your guns of knowing Sonic Youth and Hella. Otherwise, stay off.
Gorgeous Record (Top of the Line Chariot).......2007-05-29
At first listen, you will not be happy overall if you have listened to the Unsung EP. Eventually, you will realize how great of an album this is. This is a perfect hard album all the way through. Each song leads into the other and each has its own beauty.
Best Chariot release thus far.
A Solid Chaotic Metalcore Release.......2007-05-09
The sophomore release by The Chariot is, like all their other releases, heavily dissonant, full of raw, distorted vocals, and really just a huge, loud blast of sound. Whether or not that sounds appealing to you is really what decides whether you like the album--abrupt tempo changes aren't for everyone, and for many this album will take a lot of getting used to.
This time The Chariot has a little more polish than in previous releases, yet somehow the previous intensity and `raw'-ness remains. There might be clean vocals in "Then Came to Kill" (a remake of "Play the Piano Like a Disease" from the Unsung EP), along with a synth-strings part, but this doesn't make the song any less extreme. Likewise, the sudden harmonica interlude at the end of "Forgive Me, Nashville" gives the track more of a chaotic feel, not less of one. This polish combines with The Chariot's already brutal sound and Josh Scogin's maturing vocals to form a great release.
Nonetheless, the album has its flaws. "The Trumpet," for example, is obvious filler, with a choir singing a hymn of sorts that doesn't really mesh with the album at all. (This is in stark contrast with "And Shot Each Other," in which the choir blends artfully into the rest of the song.) In addition, at points the album seems downright uncreative, especially with the track endings. (Remember "The Company, the Comfort, the Grave," with the ending where Scogin screams, "This pistol is my ministry"? It's back, albeit with different lyrics, for three or four of the songs on the album. Really, it was better the first time.)
Despite any letdowns, this release is great evidence that The Chariot is maturing as a band. The songs have one excellent riff after the other, with not a stinker among them (excepting "The Trumpet").

i'm not a rock fan but this cd has got me to become 1, i love every track, my favorite tracks are "Chariot" and "Chemical Party"
When is the next album comin out
Poetic and refreshing.......2007-03-28
This CD has become my absolute favorite. Though I don't know DeGraw's writing process, I can imagine many of these songs being born of poems he may have written. I originally purchased this CD for the song played frequently on the radio entitled "I don't wanna be". Though this song is a fantastic song, I found it not nearly the best of the bunch. DeGraw's voice is so unique and the music different from much of what is played on radio today. It's a great combination of alternative and rock with a flair all it's own.
Simply Great Music .......2007-02-17
Gavin DeGraw has put together a fantastic set of songs. The lyrics range form serious to fun, and his energy is contagious. The music has a honky-tonk quality to it. If you want to try out his music, I recommend you start with this album before any of the others. I eagerly await his next set of songs.
I am a Gavin DeGraw idiot!.......2007-01-10
I absolutely love this guy! He is incredible! I am a married adult woman so I'm not one of the little girls swooning over his looks. I am strictly talking talent here.
He writes and performs the MUSIC and LYRICS - this is a really big deal to me. I am very musical myself and hail from a large family of lots of musicians so I really appreciate true talent.
Gavin DeGraw is amazing at putting words and sounds together to make a person reach deep inside their soul while listening.
I absolutely can't wait until his next release! I am dying to get my hands and ears on the release of We Belong Together (perhaps the best song ever in the whole entire world) which should be on the album scheduled for Jan/Feb '07 release. YAY!~
Gavin's "Chariot" is worth a ride..........2006-09-27
I am 100% in love with this cd. Gavin has a timeless sound and a definite talent above his peers. I find it very impressive when a young artist writes his own lyrics and music(he also plays all his own piano and keyboard) - it makes the performance personal and shows a vulnerable confidence in showing the world his mind.
Gavin's musical talent is certainly heavily influenced by the Chart Toppers of a few decades past, but this serves him well, propelling him into his own genre with the foundation of talent from the classic singers.
You hear The Beatles laid back yet catchy feel in "Chemical Party" - you can even hear a little of McCartney's vocal influence in Gavin's tone.
"Just Friends" and "Belief" seem reminiscant of Billy Joel's style - you find yourself singing them over and over and liking them better each time.
But the most obvious influence to me - from his squeaky falcetto to his peppy usage of instruments to his twirling vocals - is Stevie Wonder, who Gavin channels so precisely in nearly every song, most noticably in Follow Through and More Than Anyone. It's a wilful tribute that works for Gavin - I'd so love to hear a harmonica in there someday or perhaps even a duet with Wonder.
The title track seems to bear the most originality and Gavinesce style - he's got a clever mind for wording and a tasteful ear for musical progression that is unique but easy on the ears.
I'm looking forward to more projects from this promising artist! Gavin's "Chariot" is certainly not "Overrated". : )

Customer Reviews:
A Slight Innacuracy.......2007-06-13
The version of "Nadia's Theme" (Theme from The Young and the Restless) isn't actually the one you're expecting. I believe it's actually the original arrangement made for "Bless the Beasts and the Children". So what later became the Young and the Restless theme (the one that was a hit) still remains unreleased on CD.
Hopefully, we can see that version on a future release. Maybe they could get "Little Ballerina Blue" on one while they're at it.
Still, some great stuff here.

Not totally an instrumental.......2006-03-10
I was excited to find this album. I bought it but was horrified to find a loud vocal on the first track. The rest of the music is all instrumental but this one track simply JARS you when it plays. Very disappointing!
Another Collection You Wonr Find Anywhere else.......2003-05-06
Well, ERIC records has done it again.
Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.
First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.
There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.
Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!
There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...
Its listening the way it used to be.

"Lord, How Come Me Here".......2007-06-18
I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.
And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album!

You know, after owning both the CD and VHS of this performance, and having been coached by Sylvia Olden Lee herself, it is no wonder why spiritual mean so much to me. And these two ladies bare their souls and bring these masterpieces to life! WOW!!!

Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.

Broadway takes on the spiritual ..........2004-01-29
... takes it on and puts it on the canvas by the end of the first round.
I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.
There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.
The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.
And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.

Customer Reviews:
The Price Club.......2005-04-28
"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.
"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.
A living legend.......2005-03-10
Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "
not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23
Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.
Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31
IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**
Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12
This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

Absolutely Amazing!!! ('specially for white folk).......2004-03-27
This is an absolute must!!! I have never heard such passionate singing of spirituals from non-black choirs. Perhaps that is attributed to Shaw's minister roots. As usual, the sonority of Shaw's singers is second to none. This is a fun CD that all can enjoy...not just the choral buffs who know just how good Shaw and his choirs are!!!
Not Up to Shaw's Usual Standard.......2002-03-23
Maybe just personal taste. I don't find the arrangements and vocalizing as interesting and satisfying as "Sea Chanties" and "23 Glee Club Favorites", the latter setting a standard never equaled.
A Must CD for Choral Music Lovers.......2001-01-03
Amazing Grace is a very appropriate title for this recording. For those of you who love Sacred Harp , Southern Harmony and Spirituals, you will revel in the folk traditions of this album. Parker and Shaw arrangements, and sometimes just one or the other are so well done. The singers, of course, do an excellent job of making music under Shaw's direction. "Hark I Hear.." arr. by Parker is becoming a standard for choruses and this album will help you hear why. "If I've got my ticket" by Shaw is a wonderful exchange between solo and chorus. You will be playing this CD over and over once you hear it.
Soul-stirring.......2000-08-10
I have thoroughly enjoyed this CD. The thoughtful and meditative, "What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul" sends the listener awe-struck to the foot of the cross. The triumphant "Ride on King Jesus!" reminds the listener of final victory. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates musical and cultural heritage or for anyone who appreciates religious music.

Kathy Rocks Ever!.......2006-01-01
Oh,yeah! Also here in Brazil she commanded, complained, got her tantrums as well but,she is Kathy;highly gifted, charmingly glamourous, her elegant golden singing beautifully soaring over brazilian audiences and so on.About this cd,I would prefer a completely new one. However, this is a gorgeous compilation, just perfect to Battle beginners or her fans, especially these spirituals that belongs incontestablely to her heavenly throat.I hope much more from Miss Battle just 'cause she is a great performer,in fact nobody or nothing couldn't denies that no matter she's doing backstage.Cowardly, poisonous "kid's rewiews" show us solely how empty is this quarrel.I hope a DG reissue of her beloved, out of print Schubert recital as well.
A wide presentation of the work of an amazing artist.......2005-12-23
This CD provides a sampling of Kathleen Battle's voice and interpretive abilities from coloratura virtuousity (Voices of Spring) to the simple, heartfelt spiritual (Talk about a child).
First of all, there's THAT voice. You hear a voice that is uniquely angelic and capable of expressing a wide range of moods. You hear a voice that glitters like a diamond, skips happily and effortlessly (and in impeccable tune) from note to note like it's nobody's business, one that that reminds you of moonbeams and early morning dew on pink rose petals. You've simply got to her it to believe it.
On this CD, the listener is provided with the the works/composers for which she's well known: Handel Opera (E pur cosi / piangero la sorte mia), Mozart Opera (S'altro che lagrime), Bel Canto Opera (Ah, tardai troppo...), French Opera (Depuis le jour), spirituals, and a few popular songs for sopranos such as Gershwin's Summertime and Faure's Pie Jesu
If you're just popping the CD in, try: (1) Ah, tardai troppo, (2) Voices of Spring, (3) Talk about a child, (4) I loves you, Porgy, and (5) Pie Jesu.
I suppose if you are a fan of heavy, dramatic voices, Kathleen Battle may not be to your liking. But I suspect that if you listen to her, you still might be amazed...
A Great Coloratura Soprano .......2005-04-03
Coloratura sopranos are a dying breed today. The era of Lily Pons and Beverly Sills is long gone and opera audiences favor a more "heavy" coloratura sound- or at least a full lyric one, such as the voice types of Kiri Te Kenawa, Carol Vanness and Renee Fleming. Kathleen Battle was in many ways an artist who payed homage to the coloratura queens of olden days. Only Natalie Dessay, of late, represents that kind of singer. much This album showcases her best work, and she is in fine voice, bringing a luminous and sunny quality to her interpretations, while keeping the dramatic appeal of the text. She was at best a Handel/Mozart/Strauss/Gounod singer, and never fared well in the more dramatic reperotoire of Verdi or Puccini heroines. She never sang Madame Butterfly, which if she had gone through training, she could have nailed, especially because her dramatic aspirations coupled with her soft, vulnerable sound would have suited her as Ciao Ciao San, in the way that Ying Huang interpreted the role. Verdi opera must have frightened her and she could never dream of taking on the roles that Leontyne Price performed, surely an influence in her student days made all the more credible because Leontyne Price was a "sister" African-American. So Leonora, Aida and Suor Angelica were out of her reach. While she sang with Jessie Norman in concert and recitals (like the Spirituals Concert), she must have been secretly or overtly ? jealous of the fact that Jessye Norman had a voice that could swallow the world!! A big, beautiful voice such as Ms. Norman's is closer to the true goddesses of operas in the tradition of Maria Callas, while Battle is more of the "tiny, bright, canary" voice. She ranks among the best of the lighter sopranos- Beverly Sills, and like Sumi Jo today. Her fellow co-artists used to call her the "Singing Mosquito". But she is marvelous in singing Handel oratorio(the only times I've heard her sing live), Mozart- Sussannah, Zerlina, the Countess in Figaro, Gounod- Juliette, Bizet- Micaela, but could never truly master the more difficult Mozart heroines- Dona Ana in Don Giovanni or Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte or even Konstanza in Die Entfurung, though try she did. In Strauss operas, she made a fine Zerbinetta, though she always oozed a confidence that made it seem as if these difficult pieces were a piece of cake for her. Some arias in this collection appear that way too.
Kathleen Battle has long since disappeared from the opera world, singing off and on. Her last singing engagement was for the soundtrack to the Japanese action saga "House of Flying Daggers" in which she sings in a very Japanese/poetic style. Before that she sang in Mythodea opposite Jessie Norman in a massive choral work by Vangelis, and also in Disney's Fantasia 2000. Her constant bitchiness, diva antics and disrespect to conductors and singers became too much and finally Joseph Volpe fired her from the Met. She had stayed there for so long because James Levine took a shine to her. As a singer, she was a perfectionist and in her body of work it shows. But she displayed a nasty diva temperament that does not sit well today. In the 80's, she would come to rehearsals late, would criticize everyone from conductor to costuma makers and even once disrespected the much older and experienced Rosalind Elias, a beloved mezzo at the Met. While I think that Volpe did the right thin in firing Battle, I think that Battle's voice is glorious and would buy her albums, even if she mostly poses as if she were in Vogue cover shots.

Beautiful Voice.......2005-02-24
I find it hard to give anything under 5 stars for any work including Miss Battle. Her technique and mastery of the female voice is quite remarkable. I am a HUGE fan of the soprano voice and I have found no one who posses the talents, skills, and interpretations of Battle. I would like to have seen more variety in this compilation CD. Her Rosina, Zerbinetta, Semele, other such roles were obviously ignored in the making of this CD. I think anyone will be hard pressed to find any lyric/coloratura soprano who amounts to the skill level of Miss Battle. Talent is talent, and she's got plenty of it. A person's attitude has nothing to do with their abilities as a performer, and I am tired of people knocking Miss Battle because of the stigma with which she is attached. Personally, she has never done anything to me nor the number of others who criticize her for her actions which took place over a decade ago. You cannot say that this woman does not posses mad skills. She is a lovely woman who has accomplished great things. I would gladly buy any CD that carries the name "Kathleen Battle".
