Customer Reviews:
A great addition.......2005-08-20
Joan Morris and her husband, composer William Bolcom, take another trip back to the early days of Broadway musicals and earlier. In the same groove as their earlier albums, After the Ball and Vaudeville. A great addition to your collection if you love this kind of music, performed the way it was meant to be heard.
Joan Morris and William Bolcom return to their roots.......1999-03-13
Back in 1974, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris, and her husband, William Bolcom, recorded "After the Ball," a collection of turn-of-the-century popular songs, some of which hadn't been recorded since the early part of the century, if ever. Now, after bringing their talents to the music of Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, and most recently, Vincent Youmans, they return to the turn of the century with this delightful collection. Note: no compromises were made with the original turn-of-the-century lyrics; this CD is not for those obsessed with "political correctness." But then, those obsessed with political correctness generally don't have much taste, anyway.

Customer Reviews:
demos, regrets, and Steve Lillywhite.......2003-10-04
Lee Mavers claims that he was never able to recapture the magic of these demos. I'm sorry, Lee, but the album really DOES sound like the demos. I think that a La's fan won't be surprised by much of what they will hear on this CD. If anything, these demos prove that Steve Lillywhite did a fine job on the La's proper album. Get over it and make some more music, Lee - you silly wanker.
The Magic Of Lee Mavers.......2002-06-16
This album is full of rare tracks, that you simply can't find
anywhere else. The track tears in the rain even though perform
in poor quality is one of lee mavers greatest songs! It's a little
haunting and sounds nothing like the la's were use to,but a great
song it is none the less. This album also has lots of live versions,of the songs we've grown to love.Including the first ever peformance of there she goes!My finale bit of advice
buy this album, you won't regret it!I don't.Also i would like to add just one comment, people have forgotten how important the
la's were.I mean without the la's they would be no groups like
the verve, the verve pipe, blind melon, nirvana, the boo radleys, pearl jam, cause they just would'nt have any direction to
go in!Lee Mavers is the real founding father of modern day music, not Kurt Cobain!
not a perfect La's compilation, but the songs are great.......2002-01-11
If you're a fan of the La's debut album, you'll probably like this, since it contains some unreleased tracks (the demo "Tears in the Rain" and a studio version of the live favorite "Callin' All"). Also present are a few of the "fabled" demos of the original album, which have attained legendary status, and a portion of a 1987 live concert appearance, featuring the first ever performance of "There She Goes."
The song "Callin' All" is one of the La's essential recordings-- this version, with good-quality sound, shows how the band were able to create lo-fi magic. The melody is melancholy, Lee's vocals sound somewhat sinister, and the lyrics are spooky. It really doesn't sound much like their other songs, but that's what's great about it. The similarly melancholy "Tears in the Rain," while somewhat poorly recorded, becomes undeniably catchy after repeated listenings. Too bad there's not more of these "lost" songs on the album.
The demos of their best-known songs, which do retain some elements of mystery and charm, really aren't greater than the album versions, at least sound-wise. However, there are some exceptions, since these recordings are more spontaneous-- the demo version of "IOU" beats the album version easily-- it sounds like the ghosts of some lost '60s beat group chiming in from beyond the grave. "Doledrum" sounds more haunting, due to the incredible echo on Lee Maver's voice. "Libery Ship" sounds funkier, more disjointed, and more charming.
The live portion of the disc is marred by poor-quality sound, and too much whistling by fans. Even so, it's fascinating to hear the band perform in a place where they were loved. However, since the full gig is much longer and many songs were left off-- it might have made more sense to put this whole gig on a separate disc and leave more space on this one for "lost" songs and rarities.
Still, with songwriting this good, you can't complain. Viper has made a valiant attempt to give you the La's the way Lee Mavers may have intended them to be heard. Anyone who loves Brit pop, guitar pop, or the La's should get this disc.

Not as good as "Bone, Hair, & Hide" but still good.......2002-04-20
This CD is a little more polished than than "Bone, Hair, & Hide" and doesn't quite have as much spunk, but it's worth it just for the first song "Crazy Sexy Baby" which is arguably the best song of either of the two CD's.
