We've grown so accustomed to seeing violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter gracing album covers in her flowing formal gowns that this recording of Vivaldi's masterpiece may come as a shock to her fans, at least at first glance. Mutter, it appears, has been influenced by Gap culture, looking relaxed and appearing in jeans on the album cover. To coincide with this release, she even released a music video, featuring the Trondheim Soloists and herself performing the glorious work and looking like they're having a blast. Is this the shape of classical music to come? Let's hope so. Mutter's performance here, as usual, is top-notch. The opening movements of Spring sound delightful, the Summer storm sounds frenzied, and during Winter's second movement, you can practically hear the chill being warded off by a fire. Her impeccable tone is, as usual, gorgeous and the conductorless Trondheims provide a fine, if slightly obscured, accompaniment. Filling out this disc is Tartini's Sonata in G Minor (better known as The Devil's Trill), a wonderful piece of baroque violin virtuosity. There have never been so many recordings of Four Seasons available as right now; there really is no definitive version anymore. This one, however, is easy to recommend. --Jason Verlinde

3 out of 5 stars Exciting Highlights Dampened by Weak Support.......2007-03-08

It's easy to get used to listening to near-perfect recordings and performances of The Four Seasons. With so many recordings available, you can have your pick of styles.

I remember confidently ordering tickets for a local group's performance of The Four Seasons in Salzburg one summer. How could I go wrong? The performance started off in fine fashion. The soloist was huge, confident, and energetic. The rest of the group was solid and enthusiastic. But after about 12 minutes, the soloist began to come apart at the seams. He couldn't complete the difficult sections in Summer. The group would restart and restart. I was fascinated.

I had almost forgotten that experience when I first listened to this recording. Such violin soloist flubs are unknown in the mature Anne-Sophie Mutter's recordings. But I was astonished to find that her supporting cast of Trondheim Soloists (led by Bjarne Fiskum and including soloists Byvind Gimse, and Knut Johannesen) was apparently playing a different piece, and not very well. Ms. Mutter is also credited as conductor. I suspect that she should have scheduled many more practices.

The recording also has moments when another take would have been in order.

But I learned something valuable from listening to Ms. Mutter soar about the muddled noise: It matters who else is playing with you for The Four Seasons.

If you are an Anne-Sophie Mutter fan (as I am), you'll undoubtedly want to listen to this CD. But I think you'll be more pleased if you limit yourself to the first allegro from Spring from The Four Seasons for 3 minutes and 36 seconds during which the Trondheim Soloists perform okay in the Simply Anne-Sophie CD. Good editing choice there.

I graded Anne-Sophie's playing as a five, the recording quality as a four, and the Trondheim Soloists as a 1.

5 out of 5 stars Not For The Purist, But I Think This Is The Best Recording of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons".......2007-01-25

Only a die-in-the-wool traditionalist will dislike this fine Deutsche Grammophon recording of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons", which I regard as the best recording of it that I've heard, surpassing classic ones from the likes of I Musici. Indeed, the venerable Penguin Guide to Classical Music not only has given it its highest starred rating, but has noted succinctly that this recording is among the best available. And it's no wonder, considering the superb playing from the great German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Trondheim Soloists, especially from harpsichord player Knut Johannesen, whose own splendid musicianship ranks favorably with, for example, Trevor Pinnock. I was quite impressed that musically, this relatively unknown Norweigan chamber music ensemble could offer a performance as memorable as any from the English Consort and I Musici, but to their everlasting credit, they have done so in this rather fresh, quite vivid interpretation of Vivaldi's most popular works for harpsichord and strings. As for Mutter, she shows substantial dynamic range in her own virtuoso playing, offering, for example, in "L'Inverno" (Winter), a truly impassioned, yet icy, performance. Unlike the Penguin Guide, I was equally impressed with Mutter's playing and the Trondheim Soloists's interpretation of Tartinai's "Devil's Trill" Sonata in G minor. Without question, this fine recording remains among Mutter's best, and one which I look forward to hearing frequently for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars The best 4 seasons out there........2006-12-23

The title says it all. This is the cd to compare to all other performances of this work. Very similar to Karajan's interpretation. So if you like his then you'll love this.
Mutter is at her best and pulls off the visual images in her playing better than any other I've heard. You can feel the summer storm and the chill of the winter concerto. the Trondheim Soloist keep pace and drive the performance in a grand way.
One of my favorites.

1 out of 5 stars Nasaly and scraping tones, and a bored performer.......2006-06-17

Given the number of 5 star reviews here, it's clear that the majority of these people haven't heard the recording by Hugh Bean and Stokowski. Once you do, nothing else will do, unless you are a period performance fan. This cd has the most ridiculous packaging I've seen. All to promote the sexy, come hither looks of Mutter. One would hope for a remotely sexy performance, but it's not to be. I'm literally shocked at the poor intonation and the scraping noises of her violin (especially on Winter, track number 10), it makes my teeth grind. One wonders what the rest of the musicians were thinking when they recorded this. Did they think the scraping sounds were good? The Trondheim Soloists sounds like a second rate group, one that obviously needs more cohesiveness to make their group sound better. They sound under rehearsed and they struggle to keep up with Mutter's pace. Then there's Mutter the conductor. Sure her performance with Karajan was a mess, and he knows how to conduct. So here we have Mutter thinking she can do it better. This is a better performance, but it's still a terrible one. Avoid this and get the one by Stokowski and Hugh Bean.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, this album has completely surprised me........2007-01-10

I really didnt know what to expect when I got this album, but after a few listens there is only one conclusion I can make.... Marit Larsen has arrived, and she has what so many lack in this business..REAL TALENT. She IS the real deal.

Her songwriting is amazing. This album does not conform to any one standard out there, I truly believe she wrote this for herself and not under some preconveived notion of what the masses would like. I thank her for this because this is the best album I have heard in at least 10 years. In staying true to herself she has created something very special, a truly rare gem. Every song is different in it's own right and they will all surprise you in the directions they take. The lyrics are heartfelt, the music is at times so beautiful that you feel tears starting to form and Marit's voice is very very unique. Some of the music is even quite theatrical and playful, you can really hear how happy Marit is on this record. This feeling transfers directly over to the listener, I cannot help but smile when I listen to this album.

Give Under the Surface a try, you will not be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars a hidden masterpiece.......2007-01-05

If you're tired of the droning and bland sounds from the radio, then you've probably come to the right place.

The former blonde half of the Norweigen pop sensation M2M, Marit larsen has come a long way to produce a work that's nothing short of a masterpiece in the folk-pop genre (although that can barely describe the diversity and originality of the album).

Although revolving around the usual themes of relationships, romance, love, and love lost, she approaches it with honest lyrics and with the band, quirky and melodic instrumentals, making the common sound so refreshingly new.

As some have mentioned, I rarely find myself skipping through songs as the album works so well in its entirety, with each track naturally progressing to the next.

However, I can say that this album is not for everyone. It has a very predominant folk direction, with the pop elements playing a supporting role. This can probably explain why 'Don't Save Me' and 'Under The Surface' are the radio hits in Norway, them being the more conventional pop-rock/ballad arrangements in the album (the other in my opinion being 'Solid Ground').

Marit's sound is very organic, having very little synthesized sounds or use of anything electronic (other than a little use of vocal effects for some of the tracks, notably 'Poison Passion'). But what really gives the album such a different dimension is the liberal use of various bluegrass instruments such as the; banjo, mandolin, harmonica and many other acoustic-based instruments.

So if you're one who finds it hard to appreciate the not so conventional, I would give the album a skip, although you may still enjoy 'Under The Surface', 'Solid Ground' and 'Don't Save Me'. But for those wanting to try something new and refershing, and missed hearing music that is simple and honest, you won't go wrong with Under The Surface.

Favourite Tracks:

'This Time Tomorrow' (Really love the instrumentals in this track, fun and edgy, although the lyrics are about a girl and her rather paranoid behavoiur towards her boyfriend. Somehow the contrast works really well.)

'The Sinking Game' (Second best example next to 'Only a Fool' that exemplifies the unique folk aspect of the album. Great instrumentals on this one too, a nice fusion of jazz, folk and pop.)

'Come Closer' (With that distinctive Banjo riff in the beginning to the wonderfully arranged chorus, this track brings you along a rollercoaster ride of emotions through the arrangment. Also one of Marit's stronger vocal performances in the album. A great union of folk and pop-rock elements.)

5 out of 5 stars Marion who?.......2006-12-10

Larsen first caught my attention when I saw M2M open up for Jewel in Washington D.C. I Didn't care much for the duo but it was obvious which one was the true talent. Marit has gone on to become the real deal and made some excellent music on this recording. Unfortunately, the other half of M2M, Marion Raven, has apparently flipped her lid.
I gotta agree that Marit is a much better solo artist with awseome style. The direction she has taken with this album is both unique an extremely entertaining. It tends to be a perfect blend of pop and folk with a Leigh Nash (Sixpence None the Richer) feel to it, only better. Well worth the extra few bucks I had to spend on an import cd! If she continues in this style, she'll have a long term fan here! I couldn't recomend this album any higher!

5 out of 5 stars Marit Larsen - A LOT lies "Under the Surface".......2006-12-01

An amalgamation of all things musically beautiful, Marit Larsen's debut album "Under the Surface" is the most refreshing 38 minutes of music I've ever listened to, and the polar opposite of Marion Raven's "Here I am". After hearing how incredibly different their styles are, I can't help believing that the break-up of M2M was better for both of them. Marit has proven that her rightful place is in the spotlight every bit as much as Marion was, which is why to this day I'll never understand why she took a back seat to Marion in M2M. I honestly find her to be a musical genius.

1-part Dixie Chicks, 1-part Norah Jones, 1-part Broadway Musical or old-school Disney soundtrack, and all-parts awesome is the label I'd try to place on her style, but in all honesty, I feel like categorizing it in the way of "trying to label what it sounds like" really downplays how truly original it is.

Let me first say that if you really love American pop radio, you will not enjoy this album half as much as the rest of us who are sick of society's constant barrage of booty-shaking, lyrically-retarded muck that plays on the American-mainstream radio. This album is for the more sophisticated and mature music lover. I'd definitely point you in the direction of Marion's album if you're looking for something that's radio-friendly because Marit's is definitely not. That's part of what makes me love it so much. It employs the use of so many different kinds of non-radio-friendly instruments, (banjo, mandolin, cello, viola, xylophone) it's almost as if she was deliberately trying to not be radio-friendly.

1. In Came the Light. the album's opening introductory track is simple, beautiful, soft, and deceptively short before the first real song begins. I liken this track to the opening credits just before a movie begins. 8/10 track begins.

2. Under the Surface. the immediate thought I had as this track began was "this sounds like something out of a classical Disney movie." Marit's voice at the start of this track is already a testament as to how much she's grown as a vocalist and songwriter. I absolutely love the strings they use on this song, and the piano that accompanies it is already more complex and beautiful than anything on Marion's album. I also like how the melody is so complex it seems as though there are several key changes when in fact there are not any or at least not between the three choruses. The subject of the song is this: Marit is paranoid about her new boyfriend, believing that there may still be some kind of special love he has for his ex and she wants him to have the same love for her (or moreso) than he did for his ex. 9/10

3. Don't Save Me. I suppose if she had ONE single on this album that could be considered radio-friendly, it would be this one. With that said, I actually really enjoy this song. It kind of reminds me of Sixpence None the Richer (The group that did "Kiss Me" and "There She Goes"), although I don't think they used piano. I love the hand-claps used throughout as well. This would have been a great radio single in the 90's. One thing I've noticed a lot with this album, is that you can practically hear Marit smiling and you can just tell that she is enjoying her newfound freedom being able to record what and how she wants. It's so great to hear an artist that is clearly enjoying themselves in the studio. 9/10

4. Only a Fool. The opening harmonica and banjo (or mandolin) make it clear that this album is going to have all different kind of musical flavorings. I started to love this song when she starts to harmonize with herself. This song was the first that I felt had Dixie Chicks influences. One thing that should also be noted about this song is the use of the cartoony slide-whistle for absolutely no reason. I love it. It's just thrown in too make the song more fun and light and thusly making it even less radio-friendly. The subject of this song is that a guy is wishing for Marit to take him back but she's recounting all the things that went wrong and has come to the conclusion that "only a fool" would do that again. 9/10

5. Solid Ground. I really like the piano used in this song as well, but overall I'd say the melody to this song was the most basic and boring of all the tracks. Wellmaybe the last track is worse. The message in this song is great and honestly I wonder if it is about her frustrations with being a part of a huge-corporate music recording company and "keeping her head above it all" during her time there. "They will always pull you down. Before you know it they will take your smile and push you around. They will fight and struggle, blur and trouble your sense of solid ground." It sounds to me like Marit felt as though she was never able to find her footing in the American music market and didn't like the person she was becoming as a result. That's just my interpretation. Anyway, the song is beautiful and simple but has a profound message in it as well. 8/10

6. This Time Tomorrow. This song immediately reminded me of an Irish dance "jig" or something like that. It seemed instrumentally like something that people would dance around to at a pub or something. Such sad lyrics though. This song is about a girl who is so paranoid in her relationships and has such low self-esteem that she believes no matter what a guy says to her and does for her, he's only going to break her heart in the end. In fact, she seems to search for things that he's doing wrong so she can accuse him of it and end the relationship herself. I wonder what inspired this? Perhaps Marion? I don't know. Anywaylike I saidmelodically it's a lot of fun.

9/10

7. Recent Illusion. I can't remember the last time I heard a xylophone in a song. This song also has a completely different feel from the others. I love how it opens with the cello and xylophone. But the BEST part of this song in my mind is Marit's "chicka-ch" she does after the choruses. Just more fun and random sound-effects thrown in to make the record more "her". Her vocals seem a little too weak on this song for some reason. Perhaps she wanted it that way. She seems raspy, or breathy or something. Simple and short at only two minutes and six seconds so I'm not gonna go into a long drawn out review of it. 7/10

8. The Sinking Game. I think this song is my favorite on the album. It reminded me of a song from a video game I used to own called Conker's Bad Fur Day. I just compared them and they're both in the same key so that probably has something to do with it. I love how relaxed and just plain fun it is. There are so many random sound effects used and stuff that I just can't help but love it. I'd absolutely love to see this one performed live to see all the things they used to make sound effects (if they weren't synthesized) I'll be honestI'm so caught up in the music of this song that I don't have a clue what the lyrics are about. I noticed something about diving into disease which sounds screwy at best. The melody and attitude of the song are just so catchy and fun it's like it doesn't really matter what the lyrics are about in my mind. 9/10

9. To an End. when this song first starts out it sounds like it might be a pretty sad one, but as it continues on, it starts to sound like a romantic song. I liken it to something you'd hear while riding in one of those boats through Venice sitting with your sweetheart or something. Actually, the first thing I thought of when I heard it was Lady and the Tramp in the scene where they're eating spaghetti. I'll be honest againI also haven't really listened that closely to the lyrics of this song because it's just so mellow and soft that I find myself tuning them out. 7/10

10. Come Closer. A very close runner with "The Sinking Game" for my favorite song on the album. I just absolutely love the use of so many different kinds of instruments and musical styles. When it cuts to the chorus it sounds like something Dave Matthews or John Mayer would sing, but then I guess that probably has something to do with the referral to the person as though their name is "love." This song also has Marit's strongest vocal performance where toward the end she just belts out some strong notes. This song really has something that everybody should find enjoyable. 9/10

11. Poison Passion. Again I didn't really listen to the lyrics here. The melody is sad and quite depressing in my opinion. Doesn't seem like the kind of way I'd want to end my album. But with all this said, the stringed-instrument accompaniment to this song is beautifully somber. 8/10

FINAL SCORE: 10/10 (Not an average, obviously)

How can an album that did not receive a 10/10 on any song possibly receive a final score of 10/10? The album as a whole is so wonderfully diverse. Each and every song is a slice of musical genius, and (in combination with one another) the album is the most unique collection of music I've ever listened to. I honestly love this album already more than I ever loved M2M's music. So Marit, I have to say: mission accomplished. I always knew you had talent. But I never thought you were this good.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Fusion.......2006-11-28

I bought the album about six months ago, after hearing some of the songs off of the internet. I must say the album is just wonderful, with my favorite tracks being Under the Surface, Come Closer, Only a Fool and the Sinking Game. Okay, the whole album is just a delight to hear.

Some of the songs are lyrically brilliant, others vocally... and some are a great mix of both. The amazing thing about it is that you can just put it on and not skip ANY of the songs. They're fun. catchy, yet soothing~ I love the fusion of great pop music (that has been lacking in the past couple of years), hints of country and folk with a bit of magic realism mood in the mix.

5 out of 5 stars Gwyneth Jones triumphs as Elektra.......2007-05-25

The reviewer below says all that needs to be said, so I can only seocnd the motion. This live Elektra from Geneva, in excellent FM-stereo sound, gives us a great Elektra in Gwyneth Jones, who combines power and tenderness beyond the range of either Birgit Nilsson or Inge Borkh. She is a feminine, suffering woman rather than a crazed harridan. The voice has some of its familiar wobble but is overall in fine shape, especially for a live performance. (Just don't expect perfect intonation.)

In the pit with the excellent Suisse Romande orchestra, Jeffrey Tate conducts an interpretation complementary to Jones, with more tenderness and lyrical longing than we are used to. Very few moments are brutal. The rest of the cast is fine, particularly the great Rysanek as Klytemnestra. I am very glad I ran across this sleeper by accident--it goes to the top of my list along with the classic Solti on Decca.

5 out of 5 stars Intense and Magnificent with Jones and Rysanek.......2006-07-22

For the longest time, I've been waiting for this recording to come to U.S. shores, and here it is finally. Richard Strauss' Elektra relies on the prima donna to carry the show, and with the great soprano Gwyneth Jones as Elektra, I don't believe there is anything lacking in this recording. She is probably the best Elektra on disc, even better than Birgit Nilsson, due to Jones' sexually characterized and noble interpretation of the role. It is a most provocative performance, exciting from the first bar to the last, and I find it more thrilling than any of the great recordings mentioned in the past, even more so than that of Sir Georg Solti. Jeffrey Tate leads the Orchestra of the Theatre de Geneve with a most Straussian hand, allowing the polyphonic colors to come out of the score and to exude that certain dementia associated with the opera. It is a most masterful performance. Another great artist who must be mentioned is Leonie Rysanek, a once Chrysothemis and Elektra who now sings the demanding mezzo role of Klytamnestra. Her confrontation with Elektra is the stuff legends are made off, and it simply is a must hear when you hear Jones singing like a goddess onstage with Rysanek combatting the great soprano with a power of her own. In the role of Chrysothemis, we have the British soprano Anne Evans, who had sung Brunnhilde in Bayreuth earlier. She is probably one of the freshest and youngest sounding sopranos I've heard tackling the part. Finally, in the role of Orest, we have Wolfgang Schoene, a great baritone who shows great sensitivity in his singing and vocalizing.

Is this the definitive Elektra? Since it comes in excellent sound with two of the most monstrous forces in all of opera, I would say...yes. Grab this before it goes out of print.

WOW ! if you are a fan of early music dont miss this wonderfull cd. The A-M-K Ensemble has its own aproche to the matirial and a very artfull touch like a bird getting trough your window flying gently around you and make u think about pastorelle life and nature .. the playing is likebly plain & the voice of Chiyomi Yamada is pure and unique.
THIS IS A PERFECT ALBUM FOR THOSE WHO SEEK AUTHENTIC INTERPETATIONS OF MEDIEVAL MUSIC and the japanis touch is well felt from beginning to end : p e r f e c t !

          Product Description

Torch is a sultry collection of fresh jazz standards. From Peel Me A Grape to My Sweet Embraceable You, Marit Peters flies in the face of the traditionally sad, dependent torch singer. Torch is full of underplayed jems that crackle with sass and humor.
