Customer Reviews:
IT'S A NICE ALBUM BUT................2001-12-11
I think the number of greatest hits and live albums by the Commander outnumber the amount of actual studio albums they released. And that's a shame, because they released some true classics in the early 70's that deserve to be heard. This one is their self titled album from 1974, and I rank it right up there with their best. There's less original material on this album than their past albums, but their choice of covers here can't be beat. Namely "Don't Let Go", which was one of their more popular songs. And that little tune about that knocked out shack at the edge of town called the "House Of Blue Lights". They do a couple great country songs with "California Okie", and one of the best truck drivin' songs ever made, Little Feat's "Willin", which is the best version of this song that I've ever heard. You also get a couple of countryrock swingers "Keep On Loving Her" and the Phil Harris classic "That's What I Like About The South". Both done in a style only the Commander can do. This has always been the record I've listened to more than any in their catalog. They still had the original Planet Airman lineup intact here, and for their next album "Tales From The Ozone", before they started splintering off in different directions. The problem I have here is the same as some of the other reviewers, the outrageous price you have to pay for this little piece of aluminum. Why do the Japenese get to enjoy this great all-American band on cd and I don't? C'mon Warner Brothers, release this thang in the U.S. at a reasonable price, along with the rest of their early stuff. In the meantime, I'm going to play my vinyl copy of this, with it's snap, crackle and pops and all, until the needle flies off the record. And like everybody else that owns this, I'll never get tired of it.
Collection is now Complete !!.......2001-11-25
I have seen the Commander Live at least a half a dozen times - back on Long Island at "My Fathers Place", "The Silver Dollar Music Saloon" and the "The Bottom Line". Naturally, I really enjoy the "Live" alblums that are available. However, I owned the vinyl version of this CD for years. Having found it on Amazon, I feel my Commander / Airmen collection is complete. This is a foot stomping and swinging arrangement of songs you will not find anywhere else. Worth the money if you are a huge Airmen Fan like myself. This CD really rocks and boogies. I have really enjoyed it.
Fun, harmonious, swinging masterpiece.......2001-09-11
Like deltapapa, I have the vinyl, and still play it frequently. I don't have this CD yet, since I just discovered it here and have to brace myself for the sticker shock. That said, end-to-end this is one of the most enjoyable albums you could ever find. From the ultra-smooth Southbound, to the best cover ever of Willin', to the wonderfully odd Texas-ukelele sound of Hawaii Blues, the album just moves along without a single false note. And Boogie Man Boogie shows the Commander at his best. My 6 year old son loves this album, my friends all love it when I play it at parties (though no one knows who it is!) Just great listening that never gets old.
Timeless western swing mixed with so-so cosmic cowboy tunes.......2001-05-20
I have this collection on vinyl, but I paid the outrageous price for this import in order to get some of my all-time favorite Commander Cody cuts on CD. One of my favorite things about this CD is the fantastic steel guitar work. That guy smokes! Also, this CD has the original (and best) versions of "Don't Let Go" and "House of Blue Lights." Those two cuts alone are worth the price of this Japanese import, but you also get the two swing masterpieces "Four or Five Times" and "That's What I Like About the South." Some of the other cuts are also nice ("Southbound" has a nice Grateful Dead feel), but the standout cuts in my mind are those mentioned previously. This was probably the high water mark for this band.
Boogie Woogie.......2000-10-08
If you really want an album that makes you jump up and boogie, THIS IS IT !!! It has a great mix and is possibly THE best Airmen album made.
