Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

It's been awhile since I've reviewed an album on Amazon....and this will be an easy one.
The sound of a Delius piece is quite unique. From lush impressionistic nuances to simple polyphony, there is nothing like it. Something else unique and unforgettable is this Del Mar reading with the Bournemouth Sinfonietta.
This is not a recording you can enjoy in the car or when jogging. Just sitting back and listening to such exquisite detail is all that's necessary. Del Mar's leadership and the Bournemouth musicians' insights take the listener from broad tuttis to the most subtle and ethereal pianissimi and these are done with such expert execution and passion, it's has been impossible for me to find anything in the CD catalog remotely comparable. The "Irmelin" prelude has no equal and "On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring" is communicated with such incredible depth and color.
Folks, this is not orchestral fireworks. It is however powerful, majestic and of such higher order music making that Chandos can't even forget about it. These performances are nearly 30 years old but are timeless. This is a worthwhile addition to any library.

Sir Thomas Beecham enjoyed a career-long association with the music of Delius. As Grieg provided the encouragement to Delius to keep composing, Delius in turn helped Beecham choose conducting as his path. In return, Beecham championed the composer's music as no other interpreter has or ever will. There is a delicacy in these sunny accounts, a lightness of touch and of texture that sets them apart. While one encounters occasional out-of-tune notes as well as ensemble problems in the playing by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the spirit of Sir Thomas easily carries the day. The performances were captured in good early EMI stereo, which, while it comes with some tape hiss, is eminently listenable and has a wonderful presence. --Ted Libbey

landmark Delius recordings by his greatest conductor.......2006-12-09
Here you've got probably the most essential set of Delius recordings ever made. Thomas Beecham, the composer's ardent champion of many decades, made the most of this opportunity to record (and re-record) many key works in stereo. The playing of his Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is exemplary, with some gorgeous woodwind soloing.
Delius is an elusive but highly original composer with a rhapsodic style; an acquired taste, he can definitely grow on one with repeated listenings. A kind of English impressionist (born the same year as Debussy), he was also a major inspiration to Duke Ellington. Here you'll find some of the finest short tone poems ever composed, such as "Summer Evening," "On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring," "Summer Night on the River," and "A Song before Sunset"--all gloriously poetic evocations of the natural world and presented here in definitive interpretations. The early four-movement "Florida Suite" is another favorite, and it's recorded here, as are several other works, in Beecham's own editions.
The highlight, however, is the final and longest piece on this set, "Songs of Sunset," a choral work with baritone and contralto soloists that sets passages by Ernest Dowson (a short-lived and largely forgotten nineteenth-century English poet who contributed several immortal phrases to the language, including "days of wine and roses" and "gone with the wind"). Australian baritone John Cameron is wonderful with his rich, mahogany voice, and Canadian contralto Maureen Forrester is simply transcendent, as she is also in the classic Bruno Walter recording of Mahler's 2nd. The passage "and dream we shall lie,/ Red mouth to mouth, entwined" is ecstatic--pure aural magic.
As an introduction to Delius's music, this can't be topped. And for the true Delian, it's desert island material.
A composer for a conductor!.......2006-12-03
Delius was an eminent landscape painter musician if I may; he might be catalogued as late Impressionist. Temperament and lyric refinement are basically the most relevant features of his artistic profile.
To my mind there just have been three eminent conductors who have been able to capture with all fervor and slender elegance the magic of his compositions: Thomas Beecham, John Barbirolli and Anthony Collins.
The eulogizing devotion of Beecham to play the most of his compositions is worthy to admire, and in this sense he must be considered as the most genuine herald, pioneer and defender of his music, especially when Sir Edward Elgar seemed to cover practically all the spectral universe in the early decades of the XX Century.
Don't miss this album that will always keep for us the minim facets of that illuminated and talented composer.
A gramophone classic.......2000-05-29
This set has the power to bring back a sense of wonder to even the most jaded of today's listeners. Something of the magic of the early stereo era is conveyed. If the LP equivalents sounded half as good as this, they must have been some kind of landmark in the history of recording. I would love to have been there to experience the sense of revelation that these recordings brought to their first listeners.
Beecham was and is the undisputed master of this music. Following along with the score of "Brigg Fair", "A Dance Rhapsody" and "Two Pieces for Small Orchestra" as I listen to Beecham conduct them, I fully appreciate how complete Beecham's seduction of his players was. There is no feeling that an interpreter is imposing his will but rather of complete identification with the spirit of the music, a sense of fantasy and, again, wonder. It's as if Delius is speaking directly to us and surely that is the mark of a great performance!

The Finest Delius Performances Ever Recorded.......2004-02-27
Delians, if you haven't heard these absolutely magical, radiant performances, buy them immediately! Sir John is at his mystic, evocative best in these dawn, sunset and twilight pieces, and the playing of the Halle Orchestra is so spectacularly heart-rending, particularly in the 1956 stereo pieces which open the collection (originally released on the Pye label, and later as a Vanguard "Everyman" LP), that it is almost a wonder they could manage to finish the pieces without ascending into the heavenly realms. I became an ardent Delian after seeing the late 1960s BBC film, "A Song of Summer," (Ken Russell, same director as "Women in Love" with Alan Bates and Oliver Reed) and this was one of the first collections (I have them all!) I purchased of Delius' music. Of my 40,000 LPs, 5,000 CDs, and assorted cassettes and reel tapes, these have been by far my favorite classical music performances for nearly 35 years, and I treasure them. Having difficulty "getting in touch with your feelings"? - just try listening to "Walk to the Paradise Garden" - incredible. Find a copy and buy it!!

Organ renditions that preserve the Delius "sound".......2007-02-26
This is a (rare) example of adapting a composer's music without compromising the original in some way. These organ arrangements preserve the unique Delius "sound" ... in almost every instance they are musically quite satisfying. You'll enjoy this CD for those quiet, contemplative times. The organ playing is superb ... the only negative being the sluggish rhythm of the bell player in the Sleigh Ride, which more than once comes dangerously close to being completely behind the organ. Aside from this minor quibble, all is well in the performance. The CD also contains an interesting "homage" to Delius written by another composer. Interesting music in a sort of Delian style, but the program notes say absolutely nothing about the composer or the work. It would have been nice to have some background on that composition.

DELIUS DIGITISED.......2006-02-27
This disc deserves a warm welcome from enthusiasts for Delius. It comes to nearly 80 minutes of music, and most of the music is fairly unfamiliar. Why it should be unfamiliar I'm not at all clear. Eric Fenby seems in no doubt that so far as the Requiem goes the reason is or was that the text is not the familiar Latin text as set by Mozart, Verdi and the rest of them, but it's hard to believe that. Brahms's Requiem is not to that text either, and it could hardly have been classed as unfamiliar even in Fenby's time. It`s not a matter of the quality of the music either as best I can tell. The Requiem, the Idyll and the Songs of Farewell can easily stand beside, say, Sea Drift or Paris in terms of quality, they make no greater demands on resources and they ought to have similar audience-appeal. It seems to be just random luck of the draw, and I for one am more than pleased that someone has seen fit to put right the blind caprice of fortune or of the concertgoing public or whoever we should ascribe it to. The Song Before Sunrise is here too, perhaps just as a filler item but a welcome one to me. It's Sargent's version, not the equal of Beecham's I dare say, but presumably nobody expects it to be that, and a refreshing and interesting change from what we're all used to.
In fact nothing here is from Beecham. The Requiem and Idyll are from Meredith Davies, and the Songs of Farewell are once again from Sargent. The orchestra and chorus are Beecham's RPO and Royal Choral Society, and the performances date from the 60's. They have been digitally remastered, and after two or three hearings I have concluded that all is well with the remastering. I will admit that the choral sound didn't altogether please me in the Requiem first time round, but I think that's down more to the composer than to anyone else. Delius seems to me to resemble Wagner in this, that they both write outstandingly well for the orchestra, very well for the solo voices, but not very well at all for chorus. Beecham could do wonders with Delius's choral sound, but Beecham could do wonders with pretty much anything. Even as remastered the sound is not quite what we would expect from a new recording 40 years on, but I'd say it's perfectly good all things considered. You may or may not like one powerful high note from Heather Harper in the last section of the Requiem that has been caught very close to the microphone, but after being startled on first hearing I find it rather appeals to me. The Requiem is only half an hour long, scored for a big orchestra with chorus and with soprano and baritone soloists as in Brahms's. There are five sections, to words apparently by Delius himself. For some totally inscrutable reason, or possibly for no reason at all, these words are not given in full whereas the words to the other two vocal items are. Heather Harper and John Shirley-Quirk are exemplary in the clarity of their enunciation as you would expect, but without Beecham to help it's not so easy to catch what the chorus are singing, although of course the general message is clear enough.
The Songs of Farewell are - how can one put it? - songs of farewell. They date from the horrible last years of the composer's life, and the story of how he managed to dictate them (straight on to the orchestral version with no prior sketch for piano) when paralysed and blind is one of the most extraordinary and incredible tales of triumph over adversity that I have ever heard. There are five of them, to poems by Whitman, and the settings are purely choral/orchestral without soloists. Whatever my general misgivings about Delius's choral writing, this is one of the better specimens of it, and the music is not his worst either. Regardless of what he is singing about, Delius is Delius is Delius. His idiom is always much the same, and it's only a slight exaggeration to say that most of it goes at much the same speed, a sort of andante or thereabouts. However within the general constraints of his expression the inspiration is strong and consistent, and of course he is about as unmistakable and personal in style as any composer who ever wrote. I don't know all his music yet, but I simply can't get enough of it, and the contents of this disc represent a major find for me. As well as the two major choral works here there is what he renamed the `Idyll', a set of recycled selections from a one-act opera Margot la Rouge, (about a prostitute). The opera dates from 1902, the reworking from near the end when he was in his enforced collaboration with Fenby. It received its first performance in 1933, the year before Delius died, and so, apparently, did all the other items provided in this issue. Fenby tells us that the librettist was `a French authoress' whom he doesn't deign to name. Presumably her libretto was in French, but the duets are sung in English and the words are provided, although Harper and Shirley-Quirk sing clearly enough for us not to need them. It's more beautiful stuff - Delius for me is all beautiful stuff - and as so often I can be thankful for the technology that gives me the unlimited opportunity to hear what the concert-schedulers don't choose to.
It is not my aim to convert anyone to Delius, who is a special taste. For those who need no converting this disc is not to be missed. I want to give it 5 stars just for what it contains, the performances are good by any rational standards anyhow, they don't have to face comparison from Beecham, so 5 stars it is.
