5 out of 5 stars good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars memories.......2007-02-22

This cd is excellent it has a lot of very good music and true to the original sound, Am getting a lot of enjoyment, highly recomended

5 out of 5 stars TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

3 out of 5 stars TV themes.......2006-07-05

Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.

5 out of 5 stars Deja Vu.......2006-02-17

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars A Listening Treat .......2007-03-08

What a delight to listen to this collection of pure Rutter ! The melodic sounds of the Cambridge Singers bring me such pleasure The sheer joyfulness of this music is to me a religious experience of such depth It is superb and will lift ones spirits instantly. highly recommended to all lovers of the English contemporary choral sound and scene,____ not to be missed

5 out of 5 stars Be Thoy My Vision CD.......2007-02-19

My husband sang many of these John Rutter compositions with his church choir, and this CD is perfect since the choir is directed by Rutter, singing his own music. If you love religious music, this will bring tears to your eyes, the choir is "that" perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Really good, but don't listen to it all at once........2007-01-07

I really liked this CD. It really showcases Rutter's knack for religious choral music. Perhaps it helps that I have sung some of his stuff with various groups. However, as with any similar compiliation, the composer's sameness of style and motif becomes apparent. This repetition can become boring on the third or fourth listening. On the other hand, this makes a great reference tool for any choral director or performer. Buy it, however, it's worth it, but don't listen to it all at once.

5 out of 5 stars A must for choral music fans.......2006-09-19

Simply fabulous, 10/10. These are all Rutter-composed pieces, directed by Rutter himself. If you have any interest in religious choral music at all, you must get this album! One of the highlights of my musical life was attending a concert of a University of Maryland choir in which my mom sang, that featured Rutter as a guest conductor. Listening to this album is almost as good! ;-) There are too many good pieces to start naming all of my favorites, but these are some of the best known ones: "Open Thou Mine Eyes", "A Gaelic Blessing", "All Things Bright and Beautiful", "As the Bridegroom to His Chosen", "For the Beauty of the Earth", and "The Lord Bless You and Keep You".

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding collection of Rutter's hymns.......2005-11-22

I sought a recording of Rutter's beautiful hymn, "Wings of the Morning", after we sang this lovely tune in church and this was the only CD I could find that contained it.

This collection includes many of Rutter's church hymns recorded over a period of 20 years performed by The Cambridge Singers, a group of Brits, that are conducted by the composer. Ergo, these performances must be considered definitive.

Many of Rutter's popular hymns are included here. "O be joyful to the Lord" and "All things bright and beautiful", a popular children's hymn done here by adults, follow "Wings of the morning" on tracks 5-7. Others you may have performed in church represented here are "O clap your hands", "Lord make me an instrument of your peace", "For the beauty of the earth", "Look at the world" and "The Lord bless you and keep you" among the 21 assembled hymns.

While The Cambridge Singers, on their Web site, identify themselves principally as an a capella group, I was pleased when I received this CD to find all the hymns supported by a full orchestra, the esteemed City of London Sinfonia. The renditions are uniformly lovely although some listeners may find the singing a bit on the white side lacking brilliance and individuality. Everything is done in keeping with Rutter's score markings and style.

The recording tends to be a little variable given the 20-plus year difference in performances. The most recent copyright listing is 2003, the same year "Wings of the morning" was published. I don't hear an appreciable difference in that recording than the others but still hear some age in older works.

If you seek a Rutter hymn collection you can't go wrong here. You have wonderful English performers mated to the composer in his more popular works. I'd recommend this without reservation to anyone seeking this collection.

    3 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Re-Creation of Over-Exposed Legrand Material.......2006-02-10

Michel Legrand is one the biggest artists of music entertainment, a sensitive composer and arranger.

Here you'll find a correct selection of Legrand's material with unnecessarily new arrangements though with an impeccable performance.

Many of the songs in the repertoire are still available in CDs you can find here @Amazon and the best Legrand is the original Legrand.

This album stands only for those who doesn't care about original takes and wishes just for a selection of the best Legrand.

5 out of 5 stars "one of the greatest film composers of the 20th Century ~ Michel Legrand".......2005-10-26

Silva Screen has released a collection that will set you on your ear "The Essential Michel Legrand Film Music Collection"...Legrand's score sets the tone and mood you experience a sense of power and freedom, so exhilarating...Legrand's genius in composition and orchestration, puts the listener smack dab in the middle of each film he scores as it serves up a generous helping of heaven for all "film-score-buff" collectors

Michel Legrand was born in Paris on February 24th, 1932...attended the Paris Conservatory Progressing...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s with "THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG" (1964)..."THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR" (1968)..."THE GO-BETWEEN" (1970)..."SUMMER OF '42" (1971)..."THE THREE MUSKETEERS" (1973)...and three Oscars from the Academy Awards for "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" for best music and original song in 1969 , "SUMMER OF '42" for best original song and original dramatic score in 1972... "YENTL for best music and original song score in 1984...then in 2003 nominated for Broadway's Tony Awards for Best Original Music Score for the Musical "Amour", there's no letting up for this hard working composer.

The Flemish Radio Orchestra featuring conductor composer Michel Legrand on piano and harpsichord, Philippe Chayeb on bass, Thierry Chauvet on drums and Bruno Caviglia on guitar...all in all did a magnificent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for a multitude of films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which is long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand.

This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Legrand's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is Reynold da Silva [executive producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

5 out of 5 stars Do You Believe In Good Time Music ?.......2006-10-28

Formed in the Greenwich Village in 1965 by John Sebastian, Zalman Yanovsky, Steve Boone and Joe Butler, the Spoonful were one of the first, and best, American band to appear in the wake of the British invasion. Their music was an original blend of pop, rock and roots elements. It remains vital listening to this day.

"Do You Believe in Magic", their first album, showed signs of these various influences. There was the pop/rock side with the unforgettable title track (US Top 10) and "Did You Ever Have to Make up Your Mind" (US Top 2). Another Sebastian original, "Younger Girl", became a top 50 hit when covered by the Critters. They also showed great taste in reviving "You Baby", a Ronettes LP-only track that was sung by Joe Butler. This tune would later become a Top 20 hit for the Turtles.

A folk/blues song by Fred Neil titled "The Other Side of This Life" was duly electrified and, again, sung by Joe Butler.

Although it has generally been overlooked, the majority of the original album was primarily based on electrified interpretations of old-timey blues material.

To begin with, the chorus of the aforementioned "Younger Girl" was lifted from "Prison Wall Blues" released by the Memphis based Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers in 1930.

Two other tracks originate from the same time and place: "Wild about My Lovin'", which was first issued by Jim Jackson and "On the Road Again", which was first issued by the Memphis Jug Band (both 1928).

"Blues in the Bottle" (sung by Zal Yanovsky) came from a seemingly stranger background. It was one of a handful of tracks recorded by proto-western swing Prince Albert Hunt's Texas Ramblers in 1928, although the Spoonful cover is actually based on the 1964 version of this tune by the Holy Modal Rounders. Interestingly, Peter Stampfel, a musician from the Rounders, co-wrote the original liner notes for the first Spoonful LP.

"Sporting Life" is a "city blues" first waxed by Brownie McGhee in 1946.

"My Gal" is a very old vaudeville tune but it was probably directly inspired by the 1941 interpretation from the Delta Boys (including Sleepy John Estes and Son Bonds). Of interest is the fact that Jim Kweskin & the Jug Band released their own version of this tune on their first Vanguard LP (1963).

"Fishing Blues" was first released by "archaic" Texan singer/guitarist Henry Thomas who recorded it in 1928; it is a square dance song, also of probable vaudeville origin.

Lastly, there is an excellent original electric blues titled "Night Owl Blues" which concludes the original LP and is a real showcase for John Sebastian's harp and Zal Yanovsky's guitar.

It should be noted that these rocking' versions of old blues tunes are a zillion miles away from numerous scholarly renditions of say, "Parchman Farm" and "Dust My Blues" (if you see what I mean).
The words of most of these blues are full of fun and good humour and suit the "good time music" of the Spoonful to a tee. They are not note for note copies but are genuine electrified renditions of delighful slices of Americana.

It could be argued, in my opinion, that the Spoonful were, on their first LP, among the most interesting "white" blues performers of the time.

Instrumentally, the band was very strong. Sebastian was a gifted multi-instrumentalist, Yanovsky had realized his own fusion of folk/country/blues/rock guitar and the rhythm section was rock solid. In addition, Erik Jacobsen produced the LP expertly, letting the musicians ample room to be creative.

I shall refrain to comment upon the "bonus tracks" because, although welcome, they add little to the content of the original LP.

The sound of this CD is terrific, which is not surprising as Sundazed's Bob Irwin did the remastering. It must be said that the original tracks (which I still own on both American and British vinyl) were pretty good to begin with, especially for the time.

To conclude, I will add that I have regarded this pioneering masterpiece as one of my quintessential albums ever since I bought the original UK mono LP issued on Pye Records when it came out forty years ago. What a sweet long trip it has been!

Definitely an album that no one with a remote interest in sixties music should be without.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Spoonful........2006-02-22

This is the first of The Lovin' Spoonful's three great records. "Do You Believe in Magic", "Daydream", and "Hums" are as good as any three records by any of their peers. This recording brought the Spoonful and their Good Time Music to the ears of us all. Do yourself a favor and get this recoring and just try to listen without smiling or dancing or both. John, Zal, Steve, and Joe played with such joy and zest that it just poured out of their records.

    5 out of 5 stars Magic Happens!.......2005-07-02

Folk rockers from the sixties have set new standards and blazed many musical trails that have withstood the tests of time. The Byrds, Turtles, Mamas & Papas as well as the Lovin' Spoonful left indelible marks in music and in the minds, memories and lives of their countless delighted listeners.

1965 was a banner year for music. In addition to the Beatles, et al. from the United Kingdom, the Folk Rockers in America such as the ones listed above set their own special stamp on music. The title track "Do You Believe in Magic" is a fun, light-hearted song that is just plain feel good. I love it! Sebastian, et al. are virtuosos at creating a "feel good" atmosphere and incorporating a delightful blend of country into many of their songs. The result is a musical tapestry of folk, country and rock!

4 out of 5 stars This isn't their best, but still very good........2004-11-29

If you like fun, enjoyable folk rock from the 60s, no better place to go than the Lovin Spoonful. But, although this seems to be the best selling of their original albums, it's not their best. Rather it's their first and, due to popular demand at the time of their first single, was hurriedly recorded in a few days. Supposedly, it's a studio session of their stage show from this time and, thus, includes quite a few cover songs (7 of the 12 songs). Actually, it reminds me of one of band-leader John Sebastian's more recent J-Band CDs. Of the Spoonful orginals, I personally prefer the follow-up 2nd album, which includes only original compositions: "Daydream." After all, John Sebastian was considered one of the top songwriters of this era. Their 3rd album, "Hums," actually suffers from too many hits! (including "Summer In the City")--most of which are included on any complete greatest hit CD. I also like, and prefer to this, the less-popular 4th album "Everything Playing," which has a slightly altered sound due to the onslaught of full-blown psychedlia and some line-up changes, but still worthwhile and enjoyable. All 4 of the albums are currently available on CD (as well as a two-fer with both of their soundtrack lps on one disk), all with bonus tracks. Enjoy them while you can before they go out of print!

    5 out of 5 stars It's all about Zal.......2003-04-29

With his simulated-steel-guitar bending, sliding, hammering-on, and volume swells, Zal is what makes the Spoonful for me,(but it's also pretty cool that the major rhythm instrument used by John Sebastion on tunes such as the title track is the autoharp!).

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the BEST !.......2006-05-31

Our church choir sang a few of these songs which I loved, so I decided to order it. It is a very sweet, gentle, inspiring collection of music. Many times when you get a CD, you are fortunate to find 2-4 on there that you really like enough to play regularly. But on this one, every song is wonderful. This music is so spiritually uplifting and peaceful that you will want to play it regularly. Some if may bring some tears it is so beautiful. John Rutter has a way with this type of music. You will probably want to be giving some of these cd's away to those you love.

5 out of 5 stars Great for bringing a child into this world.......2005-12-22

I had this CD on while in labor with my last child. We had a wonderful homebirth and what better then to have the spirit in our home with this music as we welcomed a brand new baby. It helped me relax and helped the birth be peaceful, calm, and spiritual.

4 out of 5 stars CD like new.......2005-10-02

This CD was advertised as "like new" and it was -- in fact, it was still in the plastic wrapper. I couldn't have found a better deal or quicker service. Everything was great!

5 out of 5 stars The Sweetest Music.......2004-06-07

I love this CD. My family and I listened to it over and over and over again, during the last few weeks of my mother's life. It has been a comfort to me in time of sorrow. Now it brings tears every time I listen to it. This music is like loving arms around me. It touches my soul. I've given so many away, I should have bought a case of them.

5 out of 5 stars This is my new all-time-favorite CD!.......2004-04-22

I bought this CD because I had heard "My Shepherd Will Supply My Need" once and loved it. But it's just one of the many beautiful songs on this CD. I'm at a loss to describe what joy this music brings to me each time I listen to it. I carry it from house to car and back again so I can enjoy it wherever I am. I've given away several "Consider the Lilies" CD's to friends and relatives, something I've never done before. Anyone who is facing a serious challenge in life will be uplifted and comforted by this ethereal music.

I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.

And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album!

You know, after owning both the CD and VHS of this performance, and having been coached by Sylvia Olden Lee herself, it is no wonder why spiritual mean so much to me. And these two ladies bare their souls and bring these masterpieces to life! WOW!!!

Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.

this isn't that good specially after hearing William Warfeild sing it. You can find him at www.wlym.com

2 out of 5 stars Broadway takes on the spiritual ..........2004-01-29

... takes it on and puts it on the canvas by the end of the first round.

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.

There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.

The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.

And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.

    Album Description

When you think of lyrical, romantic jazz piano playing, the first name that comes to mind, the one who influenced so many others, is Bill Evans. Miles Davis thought so much of him, he included him on the sessions for his immortal Kind Of Blue album. You Must Believe In Spring, a trio recording cut late in Evans' career, features gorgeous playing and stunning production. Its title track has become a standard for all manner of singer and instrumentalist. Includes new liner notes and three bonus tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Beauty comes from sadness..........2006-12-05

This is by far my favorite album from Bill Evans. Off course i dig about everything he did since the riverside years but this one is very special to me. I also think this one's perfect for beginners and even for people who are not quite into jazz. It is very accessible and classical (such as Satie) fans have got a good chance to fall in love with this masterpiece.
I'm ranking that one as #1 on the desert island ;-)

    5 out of 5 stars 7 notes.......2005-11-05

It just took me the first seven notes on the first track, B Minor Waltz. One of the most melancholic, moving, triping notes ever played. It's worth it even if there was nothing else in there.

    5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful.......2005-05-15

Back in the mid sixties when we were trying to copy in some small way Evan's incredible work from Kind of Blue, we would have given anything to hear some of these incredible ballads like "You Must Believe in Spring".
Eddie Gomez does a fabulous job of complementing Evans in the unique trio style that encouraged a bass player to interact not simply support the piano player.
In my 40 year attempt to understand Evan's demons and the baggage he was carrying, this CD sticks in my mind especially one particular figure from the title cut.
The reluctance to release "...Spring" says to me that the people responsible perhaps "did not believe" and who could blame them. Evans remains a dark and introspective artist. (I have an interesting instructional tape done with his brother on the art of jazz but he never seems to fully open the door)
Although one could guess that Evans would not have agreed, the title cut of "...Spring" introduces the listener to Michel LeGrand and perhaps in turn the fabulous lyrics of Marilyn and Alan Bergman. Evans stepped outside of "conventional" jazz composers and helped bridge a gap between these talented people and the jazz community.
Worth it to hear Evans one more time again AND to listen to Gomez' tremendous basslines.
Call me prejudiced but I find it hard to give Evans less than 5 stars for most of his work, only the way it might be presented.
This is very good CD and a must for true Bill Evans fans.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Album, Remastered.......2005-02-05

"You Must Believe in Spring" is a long-established masterpiece in the catalogue of Bill Evans. With one of his least-appreciated trios, he crafted a gem of an album, harkening back to "Moonbeams" and "The Bill Evans Album" in that it works as a unified collection of songs, as opposed to the slapdash compilation of warhorses that is "Trio '65" (which offers its own, different delights).

Evans was one of the few jazz artists who made great albums, in every sense of the word. He had great concepts, and here he put his mind to work, coming up with seven songs that interrelate thematically and emotionally.

The band is woefully underrated: Eddie Gomez at the end of his eleven-year tenure as Bill's bass man, making some of the most sensitive comments of all his recordings with the trio. He had really matured by the time they recorded "I Will Say Goodbye" for Fantasy. His work here is golden, just golden. Eliot Zigmund was one of the percussionists most keyed in with Evans' time sensibilities. He could really break up the tempo and displace accents and rhythms effectively. This was a tight group that should have had a couple more sessions together.

As for the bonus tracks, I am thrilled to death that they were included! True, like the reviewer below stated, they are not thematically in tune with the rest of the album, but why would you not want to hear an exciting trio stretching out at length and playing some great jazz? Indeed, these tracks are some of the closest Evans ever got to jamming late in his career: free-wheeling, uptempo, exciting! AND, you get to hear him play a blues! No complaints here! If you don't like 'em, stop the CD after "Theme from M*A*S*H." That's all there is to it.

    4 out of 5 stars Tutti intenditori.......2004-09-30
