About the Artist
The time is overdue for the breakout of JD Duvall, a singer/guitarist who is winning over audiences with his singular brand of mystic blues-rock. JD has performed everywhere from the trenches of NYC to the college campuses of Boston, captivating everyone with his moaninâ-at-midnight vocals, shimmering slide guitar and percussive fingerstyle approach.
âCountry blues slide guitar, India raga, pedal steel -- only JD Duvall could put these together and have it make perfect sense. âLove Love Loveâ is the lead track from his new album, "Bathe In The Light." The Jersey City troubadour has travelled the world - from Africa to São Paulo to the Lousiana Bayou - and mastered the mixing of civilizations and color, sometimes all in the same song. Whether he is fingerpicking a mean-ass blues or romancing you with a sultry samba, JD Duvall creates a world of his very own in song.
âdynamicâ¦12-string playing with intriguing harmonicsâ? ; âJDâs quasi-orchestral textures suggest Michael Hedges, his aggressive, motoric rhythms recall a young Leo Kottke.â? --GUITAR PLAYER MAGAZINE
Not to be outdone in the vocal department, JD falls stylistically between a depraved Zeppelin and the rapturous shouts of an old Faces record. âStrange that it comes out that way,â? JD responds. âMy favorite singers are Howlin Wolf and Robert Johnson. But lately Iâve been dipping my hand into gospelâ"especially Sam Cookeâs early gospel period.â?
After his 2000 release of âMood Ring,â? JD began heading in a more bluesy direction, culminating in the current release of not one but two albums, each completely distinct from the other. âBathe In The Lightâ? is the more acoustic, rootsy record and was the vision of producer Tom Curiano. âBlood Red Moonâ? is the big, electric statement.
âBathe In The Lightâ is the back porch album,â? JD says. âItâs about being organic, the subtle use of vocal harmony and band dynamics. âBlood Red Moonâ is the rock record; crashing electric and acoustic guitars in constant interplay. Iâm proud of them both.â?
Mixed and mastered by Ted Spencer (Stevie Wonder, Johnny Winter), âBlood Red Moonâ? is about polish. âTed took the time to fine tune the sound and bring out the intensity of our live show.â?
âBathe In The Lightâ? is about purity. âAfter âBlood Red Moonâ was finished, [producer] Tom Curiano sat me down and said âThis is all good but I want to capture the raw âjdâ. Come over to my studio, sit down, shut up and play your guitar and sing. Iâll take care of the rest.â?
âBathe In the Lightâ? is a reaction to the big production of the earlier recorded âBlood Red Moon.â? Curiano envisioned JD in a more organic setting, whereby his acoustic guitar and voice would remain the primary focus. Guitars would be stripped down, vocals up frontâ"and the song would be everything. Accompanied by Gerald Menke (ex-Mercury Rev) on pedal steel, Rob Curto (The Klezmatics) on accordion and Jim Whitney on upright bass, JD goes from the back porches of Clarksdale to the back alleys of Rio.
âLove Love Loveâ? echoes the tragedy of our most visceral desire over a wash of woven eastern harmonies. âHeedless Skyâ? projects the dance of skeletons, jumping through a deserted graveyard over a hyper Delta backbeat. âSound Of A Manâ? translates the agony of yearning into a choreograph of colored chords and pining pedal steel. Old timey gospel is paid tribute to with the church-thumping rhythms of âProvidence.â? âWhen Itâs Time To Blowâ? breaks down the evils of nose candy with a demonic Jimmy Page-inspired slide riff.
âBlood Red Moon,â? recorded at Water Music and Avatar Studios, began almost two years ago. Featuring electric guitar sorcerer Marc Shulman (Suzanne Vega), bassist Jeff Allen (Duncan Sheik) and drum dynamo Tom Curiano, JD blends love and liquor on the hangover-inducer â

âBlood Red Moon,â? recorded at Water Music and Avatar Studios, began almost two years ago. Featuring electric guitar sorcerer Marc Shulman (Suzanne Vega), bassist Jeff Allen (Duncan Sheik) and drum dynamo Tom Curiano, JD blends love and liquor on the hangover-inducer âLove Is A Bottle Of Wine.â? He plays thirsty vampire on âAltarâ?, and rips pages from his subconcience on the eastern-spiced âRise,â? while Shulmanâs guitar seems to be speaking in tongues. Cellist Mary Wooten (David Bowie) draws on her fierce bow for the melancholy âBrighter Daysâ? while legendary tabla player Badal Roy (Miles Davis) plays a sweat-soaked Hindu hoe-down with JD on âLusty Morning.â? Rounding it all out is the ode to Sapphic seduction âAnother Girlâ? which earned a John Lennon Song Contest Honorable Mention. Pick your poison. Acoustic or electric. Grace or savagery. Itâs all here but know that JDâs already back in the lab, mixing various potions--- a little! holy ghost plant, some black pepper and a dose of red fire opal. Whatever magic suits the moodâ¦.
