Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

4 out of 5 stars Innovative music.......2007-06-03

I have been listening to such contemporary artists as Bond, Yanni, Taleinsin Orchestra,... so I am not a new comer to contemporary fusion classical music. If I had listened to this CD when it first came out almost 10 years ago, I would probably have given it a 5. I am only giving it a four now (maybe a 3.5?) because there are simply other better albums out there - most of the songs here are more classically influenced than its purported to be. Also, while Vanessa-Mae is an accomplished violinist, she is not the most spectacular violnist. At times, she lackes the energy to propell her music to the next level. However, all in all, an enjoyable album, although nothing ground-breaking.

1 out of 5 stars Slop from a slapper.......2005-03-01

This terrible and dull album launched the career of Über-nothing violinist, Vanessa Mae.

It is hard to describe the depth of the level to which this album stoops to be "popular". Low brow? You bet! Exploitative? Oh yeah! Dumbed down Classical Music? Well, that's what we've got here!

Value of this album? Hard to say. I am sure that Vanessa's parents and agent are happy with this prosaic product.

Very dumbed down dumb music - for the legions of philistines and musically naive of the world.

In one word, a "dud".

2 out of 5 stars HO HUM --- REALLY NOT INTERESTING AT ALL.......2003-07-11

As violin technique goes, there is not much here in evidence to get all fired up about. She is an adequete violinist who does just fine with the material she is given, but the only people who are going to think that she is a violinist for the ages are people who don't know anything about violin playing.

That being said, this album had the potential to be interesting, except that the arrangements of Mike Batt are about as flat as one can get. This album seems to be more about Mike Batt's ego than about Vanessa Mae, as Mike perform, conducts, composes & produces practically every piece. This would be fine if the end product was remotely interesting, but of it sounds like it should be background music. The Bach arrangement, with gratuitous techno-pop flourishes thrown in at every opportunity, just bogs down in an effort to be "innovative." Most of Batt's compositions leave no impression whatsoever.

Any lunatic who puts this crossover album in the classical category truly needs to go back to Music Appreciation 101, to be reminded of what classical music is. File this one in the Fluffy Boring Pop category and forget about it.

5 out of 5 stars Classical With a Twist.......2003-07-01

The first notes of Vanessa Mae's The Violin Player sound like a dramatic beginning to a classical composition, but it's not. This album in fact is anything but traditional classical. It's unique, creative, energetic and alive and I give Vanessa props for being brave enough to come out with it. It's hard to be different. The fact that Vanessa did make the music and did it so well says that she's a true artist, something sadly lacking in a world where technical mastery is considered more important than artistic invention. This is a fantastic, fun album that you'll want to listen to again and again, the music hitting something within you and bringing all sorts of energy you didn't know you had bubbling to the surface. If you won't buy it for that reason, then buy it for it's historical significance. It's already plain to me, Vanessa Mae with this album changed the one sided face of classical music forever.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Listenable.......2002-11-13

Let's get this straight upfront: Vanessa Mae is a good violin player, but I've heard plenty better in the classical world today. You buy this CD not for Mae's technique as a violinist (frankly, I'd give her just a 6 or 7 out of 10), but for her innovation - her ground-breaking album that blends the old-style classical music with pop/techno/jazz, and gives that genre of music (which had there for a while even before Mae) the kind of visibility that it did not use to have. This album is novel and upbeat, and is highly listenable both to people who like classical music and those who find it intimdating (or boring). Would especially recommend this to people in their 20s and 30s.

4 out of 5 stars Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19

Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.

My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Full of passion and fun.......2007-06-22

I've has this collection for a few years, and haven't tired of it at all.... great songwriting, with really distinctive, intricate and beautiful arrangements -- especially on "Tantalize" and "Watcher of the Night", probably my favorites on this disc. The vocals are a wonder of technique -- much has been made of Mr. Gilder's high voice, often called female -sounding, but to me the main point about his singing is that it is fearless, emotive, and completely honest-sounding.

3 out of 5 stars COULD HAVE BEEN AN 80-MINUTE ANTHOLOGY..........2006-07-06

... Nick also recorded some great overlooked stuff in the 80's ("Let Me In") that could have been included... it's hard to believe that almost 30 years have gone by since "Hot Child In The City"! Weren't those the golden days of radio?

4 out of 5 stars Nick's Greatest Hits.......2003-07-14

I also agree with the reviewer that considers the CD too short. However, it has given me a temporary fix while I anxiously wait for the album "Frequency" to be put on CD.

5 out of 5 stars It has Hot Child in the city doesn't it........2003-04-09

As a greatest hits album this CD is a winner. It contains all of Nick Gilder's greatest hits: Hot Child in The City, to name a just a few. This is the perfect compelation for everyone who loves all of Nick's Hits like Hot Child in the City. If you like Hot Child in the city or just Hot Child in the City this is the album for you!

3 out of 5 stars Something's Missing.......2002-03-20

As a lont time Gilder and Sweeney Todd fan I am dismayed to find a lot of material missing, especially one of my Gilder favourites "Here Comes The Night". Whoever did this compilation on Nick's behalf should be fired and given a job as a plumber (my apologies to all plumbers). Once again, die-hard fans have been short changed.

Ho hum, yet another live Hot Tuna album, right? Not this time around. Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady, and company are captured in absolute peak form on this pleasant surprise. The venue is Stove's, a 50-person-capacity joint in Yokohama, Japan; the band had been in the midst of an electric tour but were forced to bust out the acoustic instruments because of space considerations. Space considerations? The place was so crowded that the band had to enter via a window behind the stage. Clearly, the intimacy of the venue inspired the quintet to great heights, especially keyboardist Pete Sears. The idea of releasing this music came only after replaying the tapes. The repertoire will be familiar to even the most causal Tuna fan--traditional blues from Rev. Gary Davis, Jesse Fuller, and Robert Johnson accompany a couple of Jefferson Airplane holdovers--but the performances passionately ebb and flow, exuding joy with every twist. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Like A Fine "In Your Face" Cabernet.......2000-12-27

A 16 year old girl recently asked me to recommend a Hot Tuna recording to listen to so she could become aquainted with the music her friends parents had been talking about. I recommended this one. It is hard to believe that Jorma and Jack are now in their 44th year playing together, (more reason why there should be a Hot Tuna entry in the Hall of Fame) unless you listen to this cd--which is the music and it's musicians at their finest. If you do not already have this in your collection, you are missing out on the pleasures of a superb, spontaneous performance. I also recommend Jorma's latest effort, "Too Many Years". As with any great cabernet, is there ever such a thing as too many years of Jorma, Jack and Hot Tuna? Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars A little rough and lots of fun!.......2000-10-12

Unlike Hot Tuna's early live acoustic album or the more recent (and wonderful) Furthermore CD, Live in Japan is a little rough around the edges. And that makes it fun. When you listen, you feel like you are hearing the band in a noisy saloon, and they have enjoyed the party as much as everyone else. Many of the songs are the same as on other CDs, but in this atmosphere, classics like True Religion get a whole new personality. Keep On Truckin' has a sexy earthy tone to it not heard elsewhere. As with any Tuna CD, the musicianship is exceptional, and combined with the informal tone of the whole set, Live in Japan is one you will enjoy having in your collection.

Absolutely the best Tuna I've ever heard - BUY THIS ONE!!! What else can I say???

4 out of 5 stars like you were there.......2000-01-21

If you like Hot Tuna, and if you have seen them live in the last five years, I highly recomend this album. The CD is very representitive of what the current line up of Hot Tuna sounds like. A very under-rated band, and CD, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Hits Of '82.......2005-08-02

Rock On 1982-Hot In The City is the second volume in the series for this standout musical year. The mix is a great collection of hits and lesser-known gems. "Out Of Work" by Gary "US" Bonds was written and produced by Bruce Springsteen and is an overlooked gem. Huey Lewis & The News' "Do You Believe In Love" is a great single and a perfect radio hit as is .38 Special's "Caught Up In You". Billy Squier's "Everybody Wants You" has a great, propulsive beat and Missing Persons' "Words' is a solid, new wave rocker. Marshall Crenshaw is a sharp singer-songwriter who never achieved mainstream success, but his great Buddy Holly sounding, "Someday, Someway" managing to creep into the lower reaches of the Top 40. Billy Idol's first big US hit, "Hot In The City" is a good, summertime sounding hit. Air Supply and Melissa Manchester provide some good cheese with "Even The Nights Are Better" and "You Should Hear How He Talks About You" respectively. Pat Benatar shows her first signs of adding more a pop sound to her music with "Shadows Of The Night" and Kim Wilde goes for anthem material with "Kids In America". Duran Duran's "Hungry Like The Wolf" was recorded in '82, but was really a big hit in 1983 and would have been better suited in a collection from that year, but it is still a great song.

4 out of 5 stars Great memories from 1982!.......2000-07-05

By some weird quirk, the "Rock On" series actually has two different entries from the year 1982. The one that I'm reviewing here is called "Rock on 1982: Hot in the City."

Most multi-artist compilations of 1980s music are not very good. They usuaully have only 2 or 3 or 4 good songs, with the rest being filler. So far I have never seen any multi-artist 1980s compilation that I would give 5 stars to. In fact most such compilaitons only deserve 2 or 3 stars. It's a rare find to come accross one that deserves 4 stars. But that's exactly what we have here.

Perhaps the best song here is "Words" by Missing Persons. When I first saw the video for this back on MTV in 1982, I was largely distracted by the visuals, and I never considered the song to be more than a ditzy, bubble gum pop song. But now that I hear it on my stereo, which sounds much better than a 2 inch TV speaker, and does not distract me with the video, I realize that my past interpretation of the song was totally wrong. In reality, "Words" is a superior, elegant, beautiful example of 1980s new wave at its best. The synthesizers are used very tatsefuly, without sacrificing anyting to art or musicianship. This is a very powerful, intelligent, well thought out song. It deserves to be heard on a good stereo system.

Another standout track is "Hungry Like the Wolf." This one has definitely stood the test of time. "Caught Up in You" also holds up well. Same thing for "Kids in America."

What a joy to hear Melissa Manchester's "You Should Hear How She Talks About You." Before I bought this CD, I hadn't heard that song since 1982. Check out the memories that come flooding back!

"Shadows of the Night" is Pat Benetar's best song. She has a lovely, beautfiful, strong, powerful voice. She was trained in opera.

"Everybody Wants You" is a fantastic imitation of Led Zeppelin. Of course in 1982 when I first heard it, I had no idea who Led Zeppelin was. But now that I do, the influence is obvious.

"Out of Work" is a decent imitation of Bruce Springsteen. The way the singer sings, and the lryical subject are both obvious Springsteen copies. The song even has a saxophone part in the middle.

Most of the other songs are in the range of OK to good. In fact there's only one song here that I truly despise, and that's the Air Supply song. Why did they put that one on here? People who like the other 11 songs are not the kind of people who like Air Supply. Well, at least it's the very last track, so it's easy to avoid hearing it.

All in all, this is a great CD. For anyone who can remember the 5 original MTV veejays, and the rocket blasting off, and how MTV used to play nothing but videos, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, this CD should bring back a lot of great memories.
