Canadian singer Leslie Feist has served as a guest vocalist for Norwegian folkies Kings of Convenience, Toronto power-pop troupe Broken Social Scene, and - under the frightening moniker "Bitch Lap-Lap" - the hairy female rapper Peaches. But her unruly resume hardly prepares you for the emotionally rich, softy sensual music on her major label debut. Moving from tortured torch songs such as "Lonely Lonely" to pulsating originals like "Mushaboom," it also contains stunning remakes of Ron Sexsmith's "Secret Heart" and the Bee Gees' "Inside and Out," tunes Feist not only makes her own but effectively uses to dissect her romantic desolation. Fiest runs the gamut of musical styles from A to B on this record, from soul (ish) vocals to Norah Jones-like musings to out and out disco which was bad enough the first time - may the BeeGees rot in hell. I guess it's ok if you're an "indie" artist to regurgitate past musical styles that weren't too good to begin with and add a few electronic flourishes so you won't be accused of being too too retro and then add some dishpan shallow boy/girl lyrics and voila - pop genius! Fieist manages to be both sultry and sucky at the same time. Well at least all I lost was time having downloaded it, listened to it twice and deleted it. Not my bag, dad.

I only found out about Leslie Feist in an LA Times article in early July 2007, and bought a couple discs on a lark. Good investment. This lady is gonna go far. A less mature work than The Reminder but very high-quality work.
Two stand out songs.......2007-06-18
I would rate the songs I like at 5 stars each but can't rate the cd any higher than a 3 since there are only two period. Her voice is sweet and velvety but I just don't play it that much.

There is one particular word for describing the sound of Feist.
Refreshing.
This '05 debut album for Feist is crisp, clear, and melodious. Right from the moment "Gatekeeper" grabs your attention you're hooked, and glad to be so. It's hard to place Feist into any one category of music. She makes me think of a possible Norah Jones wrapped in a modern shell of jazzy, loungy, and slightly Indie influences. Like nothing you've ever heard, certainly not in the last few years. Her more recent album, The Reminder, is capturing most of the attention of listeners right now and rightfully so, but this work is not to be forgotten. For a debut solo album, Let It Die seems to lack no maturity, and to think that it was recorded in a mere week amid her many international tours of '05! These songs show no hint of being mindlessly crammed onto a record ready for the shelves. In fact, it shows no haste at all. Simply the most relaxing music, but not to the point that it's short on pop, albeit in a very subtle way.
"Mushaboom" picks up the pace followed by worthy-of-flagship-status "Let It Die". All of the next three tracks are gold when you arrive at the strange tale of "When I Was a Young Girl" to which there is nothing I can compare it to except maybe Norah Jones' "Sinkin' Soon". "Secret Heart" is a fun little inquiring kind of tune with nice subtle vocals. Now we come to the place that the critics really rave about here. Feist's remake of one of my favorite Bee Gees songs "Inside and Out" is killer. The Bee Gees did such an original good job on it that its tough to say this one's better, but its close. Alot jazzier to boot. After you finish jivin' out, you arrive at unexpected "Tout Doucement". Feist's surrounding influences shine out in this jaunty little tune, so jaunty that you feel like you're strolling down a sunny avenue in Paris one morning on your way to a little cafe. Afterall, it was recorded in Paris. This charming tune will tell you that. Last we have "Now At Last", suitable but certainly not least. Of all the songs on this album it seems that this one above all others was made for Feist. Simple, delicate, and just really nice.
You simply must check out this one of a kind CD, certainly one of the best of '05. Enjoy
Time to Let it Die.......2007-05-18
I read that Feist was a sort of Norah Jones on steroids. I like Norah Jones but I'm not crazy about Norah Jones. I wanted originality. I wanted a jazz singer with a little more punch than Norah Jones. After making it through the first 8 tracks of Let It Die, I did. Feist needs steroids. Her voice is weak. There's a sexy breathless style common these days and then there's "I have no lung capacity". Feist seems the latter. Steroids could help.
Sorry, I didn't like it. The sound quality is poor which may contribute to the artist's poor performance. 2 stars because it's different and different is good. I don't think things will get better in future releases because the talent doesn't burst through. There's talent in her but not in the quantity to smash into your CD "Top Played" list.

More of a happy-go-lucky artist in his younger days, Tim McGraw here sounds as if he carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. After the comparatively lighthearted, irresistibly catchy opening single, "Last Dollar (Fly Away)," most of the midtempo material that follows ranges from the somber to the morose. There's the night-shift weariness of "I'm Workin'," the alcohol-drenched heartbreak of "Whiskey and You," and the soul-tortured title track. Even a song with the upbeat title "Put Your Lovin' on Me" has McGraw asking his lover to "be my drug" and "take this weight off me." Things turn positively lethal with "Between the River and Me," the story of revenge on an alcoholic, wife-beating stepfather. The set also features the obligatory duet of marital devotion with Faith Hill ("I Need You") and a couple of nods toward classic country ("Kristofferson" and the closing "Shotgun Rider," which could be McGraw's "Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys"). "Nothin' to Die For" returns to the inspirational vein of "Live Like You Were Dying," but little here finds McGraw in a feel-good mode. --Don McLeese

Not Tim's best.......2007-07-09
I bought this CD because of the duet of Tim and Faith Hill, I Need You. It's an amazing song and I absolutely love it! However, the rest of the CD doesn't do much for me. It's not bad, but it's not great either. Some songs are better than others, but the duet is the only one that really stands out to me, although I do enjoy the last track. I can't totally trash this CD, but I just can't highly recommend it either.
A Great album.......2007-07-05
This is a great album, it was my first Tim Mcgraw cd. There is something very real and down to earth about these songs. It has a very authentic feel to it, life, the truimphs, the loses, love... And all throughout there is a spiritual/inspirational feel to the entire album. Tim Mcgraw sings from the heart.
The song "I Need You" just blew me away, it's one of my all time favorite songs. "Last Dollar (Fly Away)" is such a fun song.
All the songs on this album are very good and memorable. Now I have almost all of Mr. Mcgraw's cds!
A Great Album...
Let It Play!.......2007-07-01
I have just returned home from Canada - travelled there to see Tim & Faith on their Soul2Soul Tour. The show was absolutely sensational, and I even got to shake the man's hand! Until I heard these songs performed live! I must admit I felt that the album was a little flat and heavy compared to previous Tim efforts, however I now have a newfound appreciation of their depth and McGraw's abilities. Diversity definitely a word which can be attributed to him and his prowess as a performner.
Between The River & Me marries the aural aspects of Garth Brooks' Thunder Rolls with the lyrics of the Dixie Chicks' Goodbye Earl, and it really works. The obligatory Tim & Faith duet is magnificent - I Need You's lyrics really demonstrate that with a gorgeous melody to boot. Last Dollar is as up-tempo as you can get - a great party tune. One further favourite is Suspicions which could easily be a soul artist performing - exceptional.
I hope Tim's next album has some more hopeful tracks on it, definitely. However as an artistic piece, the album is really quite flawless, with an impressive story-telling dexterity that so many song-writers can only aspire to.
Look forward to the next exciting chapter in the McGraw chronicles, and will DEFINITELY return to the US or Canada to hear the songs live! Britain really does not know what it is missing!
"Let it Go" Falls a little flat for this McGraw fan.......2007-06-27
By this point in his career Tim McGraw is one of the most decorated Country artists of the past 20 years. Unfortunately I found this album to be out in Left Field bouncing along instead of heading out over the fence. Many of the songs have the signature soulful vocals from McGraw, however I found the songwriting to be much weaker than previous albums. Nothing instrumentally seems to have the hooks or emotional sounds of albums past, so instead of peaks and valleys I felt like many of the songs just plodded along without any particular direction. Not until the eighth song did I find a song that really reached out and grabbed me, and with "Nothin to Die For" I at this point am hoping the rest of the album will finish strong. It does pump up the volume a bit with the semi-honky "Between the River and Me" as it also has a bit of a darker appeal within its sound and songwriting. The song "Train #10" is somewhat memorable, but nothing to write home about.
With song eleven the CD rolls into "I Need You" in which his wife Faith Hill sings along. By this time I've heard many tunes that the couple have sang and though this one does not stand out to me as those have, I really enjoyed it for the most part and much take my hat off to Faith's vocal performance on this track. Thirteen tracks in all, it is not near as strong as past CD's but if you are a big Tim McGraw fan and have enjoyed everything he has done up to this point, you may find it appealing enough.
If You're a McGraw Fan, You Will Enjoy "Let it Go.".......2007-06-18
"Let it Go" is a solid McGraw CD. It may not be the best CD of his but certainely one you will be glad you have in your collection. My favorite songs on the CD are: Last Dollar, Suspicions, Train #10, Between the River and Me, Comin' Home, and Shotgun Rider. These could all easily be singles in the future. The first part of the CD the songs, other than Last Dollar, all sound similar. That's one reason I enjoy all the songs on the second half so much better. I am getting sick of his duets with Faith. She's got a great voice, but she's not a favorite of mine. There is speculation that 07 will be the last time Tim and Faith will tour together. Thank god for that. Overall this CD is worth a four star rating. It would have been five but too many just so-so songs. I do think it's better than "Live Like You Were Dying." I don't know why people feel that is such a great CD. It has an awful depressing feel to it. The only songs I like on that CD are "My Old Friend" and "Back When." "Let it Go," in my humble opinion, is much better.

Sloppy in conception, and even sometimes in the playing, Let It Be often gets a bad rap. Unfairly, as it's often as charming, well written, and (oh yeah) rocking as the Beatles' "better" albums; it's also more outright fun than Abbey Road, the masterpiece it followed into the stores. With Lennon and McCartney working together on the perfect "I've Got a Feeling," "Two of Us," and "Dig a Pony," it's hard to believe these guys were about to implode. --Rickey Wright

The Convoluted End.......2007-07-08
The heavy black border on the front cover, the inexplicable reversion by the band members to "younger" looks, the red apple label, the "new phase Beatles album" line on the back cover, all played their part in confusing one particular 13-year-old upon this album's release. It would only be about five years later, once the Beatle literature began to proliferate in earnest, that I comprehended the situation behind what many commentators bemoaned as a painfully weak finish to a spectacular musical career, indeed epoch. All these years later I still find myself agreeing that it was a shame the Beatles didn't keep this one in the vault and let Abbey Road stand as their true swan song.
Overall, though, Let It Be really does little to tarnish the Beatles' reputation. There are small pleasures here that stand the test of time better than some of the Beatles' more grandiose efforts. "Two of Us" and "Get Back" can proudly take their place among the best of Lennon-McCartney, and even the overproduced "Across the Universe" and "The Long and Winding Road" still have a haunting melodic beauty.
And the Beatles, being the Beatles, didn't leave this without an odd wrinkle or two in the backstory. For one thing, this is the album for which the final Beatles recording sessions were conducted. Absent John, the rest of the group convened sometime after Abbey Road was put to bed to record George's "I Me Mine", which was featured in the Let It Be film, but only in rough form. They also put some finishing touches to the title track. These sessions were conducted in January 1970, which gave the Beatles the barest toehold as a working group in the new decade. The initial release of the album also reportedly featured a book of photos that one commentator described over thirty years ago as "useless", though I've never seen that book and would very much like to, if only to say I did.
And there is this: the album is entirely free of even the barest hint of the sometimes painful tension on display in the film. I'm not sure what that means, except that they obviously had moments even at this nadir when they could rally and make the magic happen.
This Album gets such a bad rep.......2007-07-05
And i dont really know why. It has some of the beatles better songs on it, and its a pretty cohesive album on the whole. yes, it does seem that spector can be accused of overproduction; it would have undoubtedly been better if martin was producing. dont pass this album up. its essential to anyone's catalog.

A comparacion de las grandes obras beatles como STG. PEPPER, REVOLVER, RUBBER SOUL, THE WHITE ALBUM y ABBEY ROAD, siento que este se quedo muy atras; lo siento muy incompleto, como uno de esos discos a los que les falto un mejor trabajo... y mas canciones (pudieron haber incluido DON'T LET ME DOWN, la cual aparece en la pelicula); por lo demas, no niego que es un buen disco, pero es obvio que le falta mucho para llegar a niveles como el de los anteriores mencionados; talvez se deba a que los mismos Beatles no pusieron mucho esfuerzo en su elaboracion, ni siquiera fue producido por el gran George Martin (no olvidemos que fue una epoca de enojos, disgustos y disgregacion para los fab-four)... creo que Phil Spector no supo asimilar la "atmosfera-beatle"; la mayor prueba fue lo que le hizo a THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD (algo que Paul nunca le perdonara); a pesar de todo contiene grandes piezas como LET IT BE, GET BACK, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE y una linda cancion de george, I ME MINE; indispensable para todo beatlemaniaco, pero talvez uno de los ultimos a ser conseguido... y no dejo de sentir melancolia al escucharlo, si, TALVEZ TODO TIEMPO PASADO FUE MEJOR.

Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulley

This was the first Josh Groban album that I bought. I heard his Live at the Greek album in a friend's vehicle and decided I needed some of his work. I have since bought all of his available albums. This is still probably my favorite. It is an excellent example of his talent and the music is beautiful! I definitely recommend it to any music fan.

OH MY GOD! MAYBE THIS IS THERE BEST ALBUM? ANOTHER MASTERPIECE!.......2007-07-11
Wow! What a line up! As soon as you hear the opening guitar of Gimme Shelter you know your in for something special! I love "Country Honk" How many groups have that kind of balls to not include a classic hit like "Honky Tonk Woman" and do a country version of that song for the album? Most groups could only dream of having enough great material to do something like that! The Stones were at the top of the game between "Beggar's" & "Exile". They managed to put out four of the greatest albums of all time, a fantastic live album(Ya Ya's) and an incredible hits set with Hot Rocks! This is an album that should be in every music lovers collection!
Stones And Guests make a classic........2007-07-05
The Rolling Stones and their guests made a great one with Let it Bleed. Keith is at his best, His song Silver is one of the best. Nicky Hopkins piano at the start of Monkey man is creative.Byron Berlines fiddle makes Country Honk better. Al Kooper plays Frech horn, Piano and Organ on Cant always get what you want. Bobby Keys has a good solo on Live With Me. Ry Cooders mandolin is good on Love In Vain. Mick is great on here his vocals are great and good harmonica on Midnight Rambler.

Led It Bleed is the follow up to Beggers Banquet and its just as good if not better than Beggers Banquest with its country, blues, and rock music.

I have listened to this album since 1973, and have LP and CD.
Was it worth to buy this Remastered version?
Absolutely. I hear things in the mix that I'd never heard before (even with my older and well-abused ears!).
Same for Aftermath, and Beggars Banquet. There's a new freshness on these re-editions that is simply staggering.
Of course, only if you have listening equipment that can capture these details... But even on my old Quad and Heresy's the difference is amazing.

Keith is perfect in his 'You Got The Silver'. Other great and arresting songs are 'Gimme Shelter','Monkey Man".
The other half of the songs are pretty Sluggish for their usual fast pace.

Marvin Gaye's 1973 album, Let's Get It On, is a marvel of sexual blandishment every bit the artistic equal of, say, John Donne's best seduction poems. The difference, though, is that the poetry here isn't in the verse--which gets a trifle clichéd--but in the supple pulse of the grooves and in the aching need of Gaye's sensual voice. The marvelous title track, a No. 1 hit, riffs on the earlier hook of Gaye's "What's Going On" to reach a more primal climax, and everything else here--a steamy swirl of sax, strings, and backing voices--is sexy, beautiful, and simply sublime. --David Cantwell

Hugely disappointing followup to What's Going On.......2007-06-27
After Marvin released a visionary, transcendent, lovely R&B masterpiece with What's Going On, an album that touched on every issue you could imagine, Marvin turned from Motown's resident seer to Pervo Deluxe, cranking out an entire album that's about one thing, and it's sure not the world and its ills. And there's more padding here than in the asylum I've had to call home ever since the dread Ice Cream Social incident (which I'd explain if it weren't for that government man over there with the suitcase of Franklins telling me I hush up about it) - the songs are all quite similar, musically and lyrically. There's even a reprise of the title song, called Keep Gettin' it On, that's not welcome at all.
Now this is still Marvin Gaye, and he still can make some very good songs - the best of course being the title track: solid drumming, great overdubbed vocals, subtle strings... classic song. So is Come Get to This, nice sax part even if the beat is a bit wearing. While I prefer the live version, this take on the aching Distant Lover's no slouch either, and as far as sex jams go they don't get much better than You Sure Love to Ball. The three songs I have yet to bring up - If I Should Die Tonight, Just to Keep You Satisfied, Please Stay (Once You've Gone Away) are just sheer fillers, nothing else. And no Funk Brothers? That's a problem.
Let's Get It On is an okay album, but I prefer his more personal works (What's Going On; Here My Dear) hugely.

What can be said about "Lets get it on." The word Masterpiece, is far overused when describing many cd's of yesteryear. Yet, soon after dropping the awe inspiring & inspirational masterpiece "whats going on". Marvin came back out with yet another jewel...Im 27, so at no time will I act as if I was there when either albums were first released. But what will be said, is that through my most trying times of heart break, feelings of lose, and the weight of the world on my shoulders. Marvins music has gotten me thru. From the first cut of "lets get it on," past the rugged bluesy "If I should die tonight" way past "Distant Lover." "Lets..." Doesnt fail to motivate you into something. Even if that something, is just laying back, and embracing lifes irony. Id suggest that you purchase this one, just for "distant lover" and "Just to keep you satisfied" Where over a haunting beat, marvin does what he does, and wrenches every line from the depths of his soul, to tell the story of heartbreak.....At best, Marvin Gaye can be looked toward for all your romantic needs on this one. He'll help you get a woman in bed, by whispering how the lord wanted yall to "get it on" And he'll be there, once that young lady opts to get it on with another-thru "Distant lover"......Buy it now!
Legendary sensual grooves from a music icon revisited. (3.5 stars).......2006-07-04
The day I bought this album, I ran into a friend at the record store and I asked her whether or not she had ever heard it, and what she thought. She replied, "It's o.k.". I thought surely she must be missing something, but after listening to this album for over a year, I pretty much feel the same way. There are certain things that I really appreciate about Marvin Gaye-mainly the fact he is a stellar vocalist with a unique gift that often makes his interpretations of material especially moving. Also, at times he can be an absolutely brilliant composer (if you haven't heard "Trouble Man", it is nothing short of pure genius). But this album, I must say, is highly overrated-even by most "music" critics. Which is actually a pretty impressive feat for an R&B album-most "music" critics have a blatant, strong, obvious, no shame and no qualms about it rock bias. The brilliant title track shows the potential for what this album could have been, but unfortunately, much of this album amounts to little more than pedestrian, insipid R&B. I will grant that its singular focus provides a cohesive force of sorts that makes the album work well as a concept, but in this case, it unfortunately also seems to contribute to the major problems with some of the material. This album is quite smooth and many consider it the epitome of quiet storm R&B, but it can also be pretty bland and it has very little in the way of musical invention or engaging ideas. It's obvious by the time that you get to the second (well, maybe third) song that the funk brothers did not participate in this project, but I'll go into detail about why that's so significant in a minute. Marvin's voice is amazing throughout this album, but almost every song is in the same key, at the same tempo, with the same slick and professional but totally devoid of any heart or character playing by the musicians. The musicians probably bare some responsibility for this, but I must say after listening to this album, that a few of the compositions are so banal that I don't know that much else could have been done with them. The most obvious exception here is the title track, which really is a masterpiece. Some of the other material is also really, really good with some really interesting things going on musically ("come get to this" with its bass drum and tambourine playing perfectly off of one another to form the backbone of the rhythm section). But unfortunately, much of the other material does not live up to the same standard, and a few songs are so insanely bland that they are a chore to actually listen to (If I should die tonight, Just to keep you satisfied). I sometimes see this album compared to "What's Going On" which is a pretty absurd comparison as far as I'm concerned. "What's Going On" is one of the greatest albums that I've ever heard, and that can be largely credited to the involvement of the funk brothers, who are probably the single most influential group of musicians of all time. The mind-blowingly brilliant bassist James Jamerson in particular is just as much the star of that album as Marvin. Their stellar musicianship, musical invention, and rich, passionate, and distinct playing are truly missed here on this project. Some of the material here is still really good, and part of my criticism is due to the fact that both Gaye and this album have such legendary reputations, just to put things into perspective. Too much of this album here is just way too mediocre for it to be considered great as a whole. But, the album is still worth at least one spin and the title track and a few others still make it worth buying if you can find it for a decent price.
Soul Supreme.......2006-04-25
Let's Get It On is only a notch below What's Going on making it among the essential Soul recordings of all-time. Often heralded as the quintessential bedroom record Let's Get It On is much more than that. The suite is inspired by his dying love for his wife Anna and his starting passion for Janis, his new flame. If I Should Die Tonight alledgedly only got his convincing take after Marvin laid eyes on Janis for the very first time. Marvin was in his thirties at the time, Janis not yet of legal age.
Marvin Gaye was a terrible perfectionist and a troubled soul. That shows on this album in a good sense. The songwriting is inspired, the music almost divine. Yet in spite of the lush and sexy arrangements the record is never easy on the ear once you decide to dive deeper into it. The title song suddenly appears to be a strange combination of courting and celebration of God and love, the latter often interchangeable in Marvin's world. This combination of themes suddenly gives the album unsuspected depth. While at first glance it does seem to be simply a bedroom suite the album turns out to be about the destructive and redeeming quality of relationships. Let's is a frank album of longing, ache and guilt. Distant lover is as much about fresh love just out of reach as it is about distant love suddenly emotionally out of reach. The closing track Just To Keep You Satisfied, deals with alienation even more explicitly. Ironically the tune is written in collaboration with his wife and sounds as a goodbye note. Satisfied is at the same time filled tender memories and poisoned love. Marvin and Anna would divorce not long after the release of the album.
The deluxe edition, available elsewhere, does more justice to the album than the deluxe What's Going On did. Where the latter was essentially the same album three times, a rough mix, the final master and a live version. The deluxe Let's shows us the process Marvin went through to get to this album. After What's Going On Marvin was plagued by a writers block. Marvin tried different approaches to a new album, quickly disbanding them all. There are Jazzy outings with Herbie Hancock on piano, first sketches of a second political record and even some material where Marvin chose to put himself under the guidance of a producer again. Almost all of this material is really on the deluxe edition is unreleased and worth while, yet it never reaches the brilliance of the final album. Marvin found his muse in Janis. Sadly it was the last time he would truly shine. The follow-up I Want You is a fine effort but never reaches the heights Let's Get It On did.
One of the top 5 albums of all time.......2006-01-20
Music critics always cite "What's Going On?" as Marvin's best album. It's a great album, for sure, but this one is better. I don't know if those critics read one stellar review of "What's Going On?" as kids, and it just stayed with them, or what, but "Let's Get It On" ranks higher. It was Marvin's biggest selling Motown album, it went triple platinum within a year back when the US has about a hundred million fewer inhabitants than it does now.
Let's refer to this as an album as opposed to a CD. When it was released in 1973, it was a concept album, and if you listen to it start to finish, it takes you through the phases of a relationship that starts out with a bang, and ends with the banging of a gavel.
It begins raw and pleading with "Let's Get It On", moves to declarations of true love with "If I Should Die Tonight" and ends on a sad note with "Just To Keep You Satisfied". The additional tracks don't add to the total enjoyment of the album as it was intended. It's like a going back for a salad after dessert at the end of your 7 course meal.
As a single (with a remake of the Temptations' classic "I Wish It Would Rain" as its B-side), "Let's Get It On" sold over 2 million copies during its first 6 weeks of release, eventually topping 4 million copies sold. The lyrics were originally penned by Ed Townsend, but Marvin changed them to impress his very young girlfriend, who was present at the recording of the song. You can hear an example of what the original lyrics were on "Keep Gettin' It On", which is track 4 here.
Marvin wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on the album. He also arranged and sang background vocals. He got his start in Washington, DC with a doo-wop group called the Moonglows, and that doo-wop influence is evident throughout this album, especially on "Please Stay" and "Distant Lover".
Listening to this album demands that it be dark outside, the lights inside dim, and you have someone with you that you don't mind being real close to.

If Josh Groban's unabashedly melodramatic musical fusion inspires grousing on both sides of the classical/pop pundit divide, the screams of the (mostly) young female fans that punctuate these 2004 performances at L.A.'s historic Greek theater better underscore the real point. This set's CD and more expansive DVD complement each other well; if anything, supplemented by a live string ensemble and crack backing band, they're a warmer, more focused showcase for the singer's talents than the studio albums that made his meteoric fame. Josh is even better in live!.......2007-04-14
I recently saw Josh on his new tour with Awake, and it was so awesome that inspired me to buy this DVD to replicate the experience a little bit. I loved it! Especially loved the few extra songs I've never heard before (Mi Morena, America). Some people were complaining about the nasal sound and quality, but this is a live show so of course it sounds a little different. Bottom line is I think Josh is a great preformer and his very funny also :)

This CD/DVD was very good. I watched the DVD and was impresed with the way He handles the "spot light." He seems to be a very humble person and I think that is what makes his music so enjoyable to listen to. Not forgetting his awesome voice!
Let me explain..........2007-01-14
There are several reviews that talk about how annoying it is for the fans to wave light sticks and/or American flags in this DVD. Perhaps if I explain why, it will seem less annoying.
The waving of the light sticks was started at the very beginning of his first tour, mainly to show him how much the fans appreciated the concerts. The first idea was to wave them during the last verse of "You Raise Me Up," when the choir came out. Later, fans added another show of support by waving blue light sticks during "Vincent (Starry Starry Night."
OK, if you still find that annoying, that's your right. However, the flag waving at the end of "To Where You Are" was special. This concert was filmed on September 11, and the flags were waved at the end of "To Where You Are" for those who were lost, and the families of those who were lost, on 9/11/2001.
It's your right if you still find these things annoying. I just thought I'd try to help you to understand.
Since this is a forum for giving our opinions of the DVD, I have to say that I love it. He has a beautiful voice and I love listening to him under any circumstance. The DVD is wonderful, IMHO.
Re-Live the Concert Experience!.......2007-01-09
Was fortunate enough to attend Josh's "Closer" concert tour date at Jones Beach--amazing voice. Getting this album brought back all of the memories of that amazing evening outdoors under a "Starry, Starry Night." I used to not bother purchasing live albums because they had poor audio quality, but not anymore. Love this album! (Actually, I love all of his stuff.)
DVD is so worth the price.......2007-01-08
I disagree with some of the reviewers complaining about a nasal sounding CD. Yes, there are few parts where it may sound a little nasal but people have to remember that this a LIVE concert and if they wanted perfect sound they should buy the studio album instead. He still sounded brilliant and great. The DVD is fantastic for all those who don't have the luck or means to attend a Groban concert. It captures the energy and pure joy of a concert. Sometimes its even better than being at the concert because you can see Groban close up. I hope that there will be a concert DVD released for the AWAKE concerts.

Re-recorded, remixed, overdubbed and repackaged--all before its 1970 American release, mind you--Let It Be has long been the most second-guessed album in the Beatles otherwise sterling catalog. This curious, three-decade-late, stripped-down rethink offers up yet another spin on what started as a back-to-the-roots album/documentary project called Get Back in January, 1969, but ended up as the band's de facto swan song 18 months later. Paul McCartney in particular has long been irked by producer Phil Spector's grandiose orchestra and choir overdubs to the title track and "The Long and Winding Road," and indeed the "bare" versions here have a distinct, plaintive charm lacking in Spector's typical pomp. All the various snippets of studio and live chatter that seasoned the original have been removed, leaving the recordings to be judged on their essentially live-in-the-studio merits. If the intent was to "de-Spectorize" the album, the inclusion of John Lennon's 1968 benefit track "Across the Universe" and George Harrison's "I Me Mine" (which marked the last-ever Beatles session in January, 1970) in their original versions seems equally odd, the legendary producer having appended them to the album's original track listing in the first place. The rambling "bonus disc" of conversation and song snippets culled from hundreds of hours of session and film tapes may fascinate diehard fans, but it also underscores the murky, often unfocused state of affairs the Fabs found themselves in during the last year of their remarkable career. --Jerry McCulley

A lot of people don't want history messed with, but I, for one am glad that this has come out. I bought the original album in the 70's and as a Beatles fan was very disappointed. It just didn't sound like them to me. I replaced all my Beatles albums on CD when the time came--except for this one. You know from other reviewers the tale of this album's creation, but let me say that this is probably the closest we will get to hearing these songs as they might have sounded if The Beatles had stayed together long enough to actually finish this project. This sounds, to my ears, much more like the Beatles. The greatly improved sound quality is reason enough to buy this cd. I don't miss "Maggie Mae" or "Dig it" which were nothing but useless filler. All the banter being gone, makes it a much more polished album. Including "Don't let Me Down" makes perfect sense, since it is in the film, backs the "Get Back" single and strengthens the collection of songs. I can't imagine why it wasn't there in the first place.
A minor complaint would be that it would have been nice to have a few bonus songs such as "The Ballad of John and Yoko", "Old Brown Shoe", "You Know My Name, Look Up the Number" and the single version of "Get Back." The first two, though not part of the "Let it Be" project, were comtemporaneous with the other songs and have the same sound. The Latter two were from singles related to the album. It would have also been more in keeping with the traditionally generous song selection on other Beatle albums, and these songs have never properly been put on an album(and this would be the one). Only eleven songs seems a bit stingy. The inclusion of these songs would have made this a killer album at the time, on par with their other albums, instead of the sad affair it was. I also dislike the flippant title and art work. In hindsight (always 20/20) it would have been much better to do a deluxe release of the original "Let it Be" that included these recordings. A double CD that probably would have made everyone ecstatic, since they would have what they want and could make the comparison. The Fly on the Wall bonus seems pointless and could have probably been much more substantial. Oh well.
In summary, greatly improved over the original in terms of songs and sound quality, but could use a few more songs for the money. Get this one and forget the original. If you have a need for the Spectorized versions for completeness or sentimentality, you can find them on "One" or other repackagings.
Good but Maybe Not Essential - For Completists .......2007-06-15
As David Goodwin says in his review here, there isn't much different about this album from what most people know about Let It Be - I certainly didn't feel or notice anything dramatically different except a cleaner sound. Artistically, this was not the Beatles' most outstanding album, but neither is it unlistenable. It's hard to pinpoint why this album - which is certainly above average in every respect became relegated in the Beatles pantheon. (NOTE: I give this three stars, but that's based on Beatles standards!)
This is the band returning in many ways to its roots, still experimenting with a more American sound, while McCartney is secure in his role as a ballads composer. The jam quality of the sessions (One After 909), hearken back to where the Fab Four were, earlier in their career - and yet, seem out of place. Only McCartney sounds polished. John's standout track is Don't Let Me Down, and Get Back remains a rock classic in the vein of Back in the USSR.
It isn't an uneven album at all, but my guess is that a lack of dynamism in some respects, and the legacy of being the Beatles' final release and a somewhat throwaway effort - has created an uneven legacy for this album. Not to forget that Let It Be followed an entire slew of concept albums from the Fab 4. The sweetness of Abbey Road and the intentional disparateness of the White Album and the vividness of Sgt Peppers left Let It Be as a conceptual void of sorts.
Let It Be Naked is probably best for completists. Across the Universe is one of my favourite tracks but the version here is average. Plus I'm not sure if Paul McCartney's signature pieces - Let It Be and The Long & Winding Road - are really better off without Phil Spector's strings. Simply because most of us have been listening to those versions for years! You don't miss the stripped instrumentation on these versions either. They will likely play in your head as you hear the naked versions.
" The Beatles Get Back" -----as it was originally intended........2007-06-03
Looking back on this album, this was how The Beatles really were. When these sessions were recorded around January 1969, they were a most fractuous "group". Nobody other than Paul, really wanted the The Beatles to continue on. John Lennon himself, at the time was so whacked out, that he could care less. Originally, they were going to release Let It Be/Get Back, in horribly recorded form. Along came Phil Spector-----who, without Paul's knowledge, added over produced nonsense, to their sound. Listen to " The Long and Winding Road"---before, and after. The reason why we have Abbey Road, is the group wanted to go out, on a better note, than the musical slop that was the fun and head games, played at Twickenham Studios/Apple.

My husband loves the Beatles. He has a collection most of the Beatles's songs. I even listened to the cd and downloaded to my Ipod so I can listen in a gym.

I'm a huge Beatle fan. I "grew up" with them. And I never liked "Let it Be." "...Naked" isn't much of an improvement. Technically it actually sounds worse, although de-Spectoring was a good idea. The original plan was to have a rough, live feel to the album and, in John's words, to "have none of your (George Martin's) production rubbish."
Now you really can hear and buy "Get Back," the advanced LP pressing of "Let it Be" sent mostly to DJs. CD Maximum (Russia) has issued a number of Beatles' two-fers, and "Get Back" is coupled with "Yellow Submarine." "Get Back" feels like the Beatles and makes sense in relation to the film.

Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.
The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.

I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!
Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16
Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!
