Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulley

THIS CD IS FANTASTIC. THE VOCALS ARE SO STRONG IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT THEY ARE IN ENGLISH, FRENCH, SPANISH, AND ITALIAN. THE PASSION COMES THRU LOUD AND CLEAR. I CAN'T BELIEVE I WAITED SO LONG TO GET THIS. IT'S PLAYED NEARLY EVERY DAY. EVEN MY 4 AND 7 Y/O SING TO IT.

This was the first Josh Groban album that I bought. I heard his Live at the Greek album in a friend's vehicle and decided I needed some of his work. I have since bought all of his available albums. This is still probably my favorite. It is an excellent example of his talent and the music is beautiful! I definitely recommend it to any music fan.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME SOUNDTRACK BUT.........2007-06-15

A WALK TO REMEMBER THE SOUNDTRACK EXTENDED EDTION IS SO AWESOME. I LOVE ALL OF THE SONGS ESPECIALLY MANDY MOORE'S CRY AND BOTH VERSIONS OF SWITCHFOOT'S ONLY HOPE. THERE IS ALSO MANDY MOORE'S MUSIC VIDEO CRY ON THE DISC AS A SPECIAL FEATURE. BUT I HAVE ONE PROBLEM WHY DO THEY NOT HAVE MISSY ELLIOT'S SONG GET UR FREAK ON ON THIS SOUNDTRACK. BECAUSE THEY PLAY THIS SONG IN THE MOVIE. I WAS AND I AM NOT HAPPY ABOUT THIS. OTHERWISE THEN THAT A AM VERY HAPPY:) GREAT FOR A WALK TO REMEMBER FANS AND MANDY MOORE FANS AND PEOPLE ALIKE. LIKE I SAID IN MY OPINION AWESOME!

5 out of 5 stars A little from both worlds........2007-02-02

You have some easy listening and some classic rock-n-roll. If you liked the movie, you'll love the sound track. The only thing I don't like is the fact that they put Landon Carter's voice over the beginning and then at the end of Jamie Sullivan's version of "Only Hope". The words are actually part of the movie and it works if you've seen it, but I think they could have left it out. It might have worked out better if they would have placed the dialogue before the song starts and then after it ends, but instead it cuts into the piano at the beginning and a little of Jamie Sullivan's "Oooo's" at the end. None of this changes the fact that the soundtrack is AWESOME!

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack to A Walk to Remember.......2007-01-11

I can stop playing this soundtrack. It has a variety of music. Mandy Moore has a beautiful voice.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful........2007-01-07

This is an amazing soundtrack with some beautiful entries by Mandy Moore who starred in A Walk To Remember the special film adaption of Nicholas Sparks extremly moving novel.

This expanded edition soundtrack is rare and at this price you should not miss out! With various other bands contributing to this soundtrack including Switchfoot it is one not to be missed!

A beautiful item to add to your music collection if the movie holds a special place in your heart.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD, if you're a fan of the movie.......2006-11-05

If you didn't see the movie, you probably won't like the soundtrack. The songs don't stick to a theme. It's not exactly easy listening, but Mandy Moore makes it what it is.

Denzel Washington stars as a black football coach hired over a white coach at a recently racially integrated Virginia high school in the early 1970s. Director Boaz Yakin (A Price Above Rubies, Fresh) has a baby boomer's heart in mind with a stylistic array of early 1970s sounds supported by Trevor Rabin's orchestral score (one seven-minute excerpt, "Titans Spirit," finishes things off here). Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band's "Express Yourself" is, perhaps, the greatest surprise, while oddball favorites such as Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky," Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye," and Eric Burdon and War's "Spill the Wine" match up with country star Buck Owens's "Act Naturally." Covers include a fiery version of Sly Stone's "I Want to Take You Higher" and Leon Russell's laid-back barrelhouse-piano take on the doomsday anthem "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall." Cat Stevens's "Peace Train" rolls into the station in its original version. Creedence Clearwater Revival (who appear with "Up Around the Bend") are outswamped by the Hollies' imitation of their sound with "Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress)." --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Classic songs.......2006-08-24

This is an album and movie filled with great music. It is pretty expensive though, while it is a good album don't pay much more than $10 used for it. I remember watching this movie with a middle school cross country team when it first came out. This is a great album with classic rock and motown combined.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie...great soundtrack..........2006-07-03

I saw where others have said that a song was missing...but I also noticed "Fire and Rain" By James Taylor is not on it either? What's up with that? I'm gonna have to watch again to see if anything else is missing. What a great great soundtrack...and I LOVED this movie!

2 out of 5 stars The best song in the movie is missing from this soundtrack!.......2006-04-22

Somebody from Florida asked about the missing song. It's "Them Changes" by Buddy Miles, one of the all-time great funk-rock artists of the 60's. He played with Hendrix, Pickett, Ruby and the Romantics, etc. "Them Changes" is the best song in the movie, and it's missing from this soundtrack! How could they exclude it?!!! Without "Them Changes," this soundtrack is a 2 (same tired old songs we've heard a 1000 times). With "Them Changes," this soundtrack would have been a 5. Here's my advice: forget this soundtrack and order the CD "Them Changes" by Buddy Miles.

Thanks to his much-publicized personal travails, it's easy to overlook the multiple talents that originally made Crosby a star in his days with The Byrds and Crosby, Stills and Nash. This, his first solo effort, was recorded in 1971 (following Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's Deja Vu) and contains some of his most impressive vocal and songwriting work, including the haunting "Laughing," the mantra-like "Music Is Love," and the extended, impressionistic "Cowboy Movie." With guest appearances by such famous friends as Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Grace Slick, and Jerry Garcia, it's a fascinating chapter in an always-interesting career that's all too often been overshadowed by headlines. --Scott Schinder

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars if i could remember my name.......2007-05-13

this is one of the classics from the early 70s

5 out of 5 stars Dave's best?.......2007-04-16

I don't know if this is Crosby's best work. It seems like it to me. I love poetry and I too am a musician. I can't think of any poetry, or music to date that takes me any further out of this world than this jewel of artistry. It's exquisite. I don't believe I was mistaken.

5 out of 5 stars Longevity.......2007-03-14

One intriguing aspect of music ( and cinema also ) is how some become old ( meaning the perception ) and some , don't. This collection , originally an LP and now , remastered as a CD, was recorded in 1971, 36 years ago!! and my son ( 27 old ) immediately like it. I'm suspect to say anything because I'm 52 and anyone could say that I am an old nostalgic guy, but its ( or his - Crosby ) atmosphere - chords, instrumental, vocal harmony(using playback to produce complexes vocal chords ),lyrics, are completely contemporary, or better, ageless.God blessing and long life for David Crosby.

5 out of 5 stars The Best .......2007-03-11

to come out of Crosby , a forgotten masterpiece that is comming back as a result of Voyage ( Essential Buried Treasures ) , an interesting listen of a very talented musician of my generation ... Love sailing anyway ...

5 out of 5 stars this Lp stomps almost all CSNY solos.......2007-02-08

I believe this LP ranks with the best N. Young and Stills solos and it should! After all, guest musicians include members of: the dead, the Jefferson airplane, , Quicksilver messenger service and other artists like J. Mitchell, N. Young etc. it may have the record for guest significant/major recording artists on one solo LP.

Simply put this LP represents many "firsts" beside DC's "first" LP. This may be the "first" LP that N. Young contributed a song that can only be found here, I know of no other LP with as many major sanfransico/haight ashbury groups on one lp. This is the only LP on which you can find these songs. I don't know why they're not included in the box set, instead they include many CSN and CSN&Y songs...probably in order to sell it, which brings up another strange thing about this LP, the critics hated it. THANK GOD almighty I didn't read the reviews or I may never have bought this LP!!!! That was back when I didn't know better. I equate music critics on par with weather men and stock brokers - professions seemingly incapable of doing their jobs accurately no matter how much help they have!!!!

Back to the music. I believe the quality in writing and playing place this LP beyond any solo CSN&Y LP and elevate it to equal any CSN and CSN&Y LP except deja vu. The only detraction I make when I place it par with these LP's is that it had no "hits" which we find abound on CSN and CSN&Y LP's.

bottom line: if you like CSN and CSN&Y you will love this!!!!!!

If Josh Groban's unabashedly melodramatic musical fusion inspires grousing on both sides of the classical/pop pundit divide, the screams of the (mostly) young female fans that punctuate these 2004 performances at L.A.'s historic Greek theater better underscore the real point. This set's CD and more expansive DVD complement each other well; if anything, supplemented by a live string ensemble and crack backing band, they're a warmer, more focused showcase for the singer's talents than the studio albums that made his meteoric fame. In peak form, Groban variously delivers forceful renditions of his pop-operatic powerhouses "Canto Alla Vita" and "Anna Luce Del Sole" (the former featuring a drum solo [!] from Groban, the latter a fine guest turn by Bela Fleck on banjo), takes a surprising solo piano break on Paul Simon's "America," waxes Central Asian on Troy's "Remember" and brings the crowd to its feet with the heart-on-his-sleeve dramatics of Closer's "Never Let Go." They're all informed by the singer's insouciant, youthful enthusiasm, arguing that Groban is gifted with more than just a magnificent voice; he's a complete natural as a performer as well. The DVD also includes a tour diary narrated with typical charm by the singer, as well as bonus live performance of "Believe" from the Polar Express soundtrack. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Josh Groban's 2002 PBS "Great Performances" special was a #1 selling DVD and the best-selling long-form music video of 2003. His second "Great Performances" special was taped at L.A.'s Greek Theater in the summer of 2004. For fans of the young sophisticated pop phenomenon who has sold more than 8 million albums, this CD+DVD package is just the latest great performance in the career of Josh Groban. DVD Extras: On the road with Josh for Summer 2004 Tour and a special performance of "Believe" from The Polar Express (it's PBS footage mixed w/ film footage).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Josh is even better in live!.......2007-04-14

I recently saw Josh on his new tour with Awake, and it was so awesome that inspired me to buy this DVD to replicate the experience a little bit. I loved it! Especially loved the few extra songs I've never heard before (Mi Morena, America). Some people were complaining about the nasal sound and quality, but this is a live show so of course it sounds a little different. Bottom line is I think Josh is a great preformer and his very funny also :)

4 out of 5 stars Very Good!.......2007-02-09

This CD/DVD was very good. I watched the DVD and was impresed with the way He handles the "spot light." He seems to be a very humble person and I think that is what makes his music so enjoyable to listen to. Not forgetting his awesome voice!

5 out of 5 stars Let me explain..........2007-01-14

There are several reviews that talk about how annoying it is for the fans to wave light sticks and/or American flags in this DVD. Perhaps if I explain why, it will seem less annoying.

The waving of the light sticks was started at the very beginning of his first tour, mainly to show him how much the fans appreciated the concerts. The first idea was to wave them during the last verse of "You Raise Me Up," when the choir came out. Later, fans added another show of support by waving blue light sticks during "Vincent (Starry Starry Night."

OK, if you still find that annoying, that's your right. However, the flag waving at the end of "To Where You Are" was special. This concert was filmed on September 11, and the flags were waved at the end of "To Where You Are" for those who were lost, and the families of those who were lost, on 9/11/2001.

It's your right if you still find these things annoying. I just thought I'd try to help you to understand.

Since this is a forum for giving our opinions of the DVD, I have to say that I love it. He has a beautiful voice and I love listening to him under any circumstance. The DVD is wonderful, IMHO.

5 out of 5 stars Re-Live the Concert Experience!.......2007-01-09

Was fortunate enough to attend Josh's "Closer" concert tour date at Jones Beach--amazing voice. Getting this album brought back all of the memories of that amazing evening outdoors under a "Starry, Starry Night." I used to not bother purchasing live albums because they had poor audio quality, but not anymore. Love this album! (Actually, I love all of his stuff.)

5 out of 5 stars DVD is so worth the price.......2007-01-08

I disagree with some of the reviewers complaining about a nasal sounding CD. Yes, there are few parts where it may sound a little nasal but people have to remember that this a LIVE concert and if they wanted perfect sound they should buy the studio album instead. He still sounded brilliant and great. The DVD is fantastic for all those who don't have the luck or means to attend a Groban concert. It captures the energy and pure joy of a concert. Sometimes its even better than being at the concert because you can see Groban close up. I hope that there will be a concert DVD released for the AWAKE concerts.

More filling than the two Very Best CDs in the Otis Redding catalog, less hefty than the four-disc Otis! box, Dreams to Remember is a double set of highlights that's no doubt just what many new and old fans need. Mixing signature numbers such as "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay" and "Respect" with lesser-known works of genius like "I Love You More Than Words Can Say" and "Trick or Treat," this package gives Redding his due once more--and in superfine style. --Rickey Wright

This is one of the best anthology cd's out the music is very soothing and it feels good to be able to sit back and reminisce.

5 out of 5 stars Soulfull, Food for soul.......2005-11-01

This compilation is a defination of Otis capability in expressing different experinciences and feelings for lovers,it is the epitomy of music that did not wane with the time, actually the quality of Otis Reddind music surpasses most of contemporary styles, the only shortcoming is that most of the tracks are short but the double CD's are worth the price
The man achieved a lot during the short span of his artistry, the world has lost a gem

5 out of 5 stars More than words can say..........2005-09-17

I bought this set a few years ago in a record store because I wanted to hear more by the "Dock of the Bay Guy". I ended up listening to both discs over and over again for the next five days, I couldn't get enough. The only reason you could possibly have for not getting this collection is because you've decided to go for "Otis!" the magnificent 4 disc boxed set.

5 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2005-08-30

I cannot tell you how long it has taken me to find this collection. I have searched for this for months, and today I finally found a copy -- $50 Canadian -- not cheap but worth every penny. It's a shame that it is so hard to find Otis Redding on CD. He is one of the greatest singers ever, and yet in this day and age of countless Britney and Mandy Moore collections, you are hard-pressed to find an Otis compilation. Some of the older ones are out there ("The Very Best Of" and "Ultimate") but they are not remastered and are not as comprehensive as this one.

"Dreams to Remember" is beautifully presented by Rhino, who continue to set the bar in compilations. All the tracks are top-notch including "These Arms of Mine" and "Love Man" (two favorites featured in the film "Dirty Dancing"), "Try A Little Tenderness", the extraordinary version of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" and of course, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay". There are also some live tracks, which are essential because Otis was highly regarded for his live performances.

If you are able to find this collection, I urge you to buy it. And I urge music stores to stock up on their Otis CDs! LOL

It didn't take the postmotherhood Ray of Light to prove that Madonna is a big softie; this collection of ballads and slow jams had already done that. Somewhat confused in intention--the scalding ache of "Oh Father," a 1989 song for her own dad, is shoved between the sex of "Rain" and a version of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You"--this is nonetheless a highly listenable album for those who dig Madonna for her music as much as for her cultural significance. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great effort.......2007-03-18

"Something to Remember" attempts to counter the claim that Madonna is not a gifted vocalist. It's true that she is no operatic powerhouse, but her vocal gifts come through in nontraditional ways and should be no less respected. Her talent for writing and singing catchy hooks, even on ballads (which is tough for any artist to accomplish), should put her up there with the greatest acts in recorded music.

My biggest qualm with this album is the material that it's missing. In lieu of the double inclusion of "I Want You," I feel one of Madonna's strongest ballads, "The Look of Love" from the Who's That Girl soundtrack, would have been the perfect addition to this album (and as an audiophile I would've loved to own a digitally remastered version).

Other dynamic material missing from this collection includes "Bad Girl," one of the only interesting cuts from Erotica, and "Spanish Eyes" from Like a Prayer, with its noticably pained vocals. Considering the sometimes off-key performance in "Oh Father" that still made it to the final cut, I think the weeping heights of "Spanish Eyes" would have made a more appropriate choice.

As an aside, this is the first CD I ever owned, so I have some bias towards it. Santa brought it for me along with my first CD player and copies of Michael Jackson's "Bad" and "Thriller" on CD in 1995. It was a good Christmas. :)

5 out of 5 stars I Think This Is Madonna's Best Piece Of Work........2006-11-04

This Collection of Madonna's Ballads is much better than you think it is. (well if you never heard the songs on it).
I couldnt have imagined it would turn out to be so great, infact A Masterpiece! It Really proved to me that Madonna is not just a pop star.

This album contains her best ballads from 1985 to 1995. Songs like Crazy For You and Live To Tell are very Popular, But other songs like the Powerful You'll See and the Acoustic One More Chance are album versions and they are nothing but Classics!. I'll remember and the #1 This Used to Be My Playground were songs for Movies and are only Featured on this album for Madonna. They are Fantastic too!. Take A Bow is the albums best track in my point of view. This is RECOMMENDED for everyone who like Ballads, You will like it even if you hate Madonna!!!

5 out of 5 stars Madonna's Classic Ballads.......2006-07-17

I am a huge Madonna fan...I like all of her albums up to Ray Of Light. This package of material is great. "I'll Remember" would have to be my favorite track on this album. It's just a great track. Other highlights "This Used To Be My Playground,Yull See,Crazy For You,Live To Tell,Rain,Take A Bow,and Oh Father. Make sure you pick up a copy of these classic Madonna ballads.

5 out of 5 stars "But you gave me something to remember...".......2006-05-22

Madonna's collection of ballads, Something to Remember is beautiful and a pure delight! I love her ballads more than her fancy dance songs. All my favorites are here: Live to Tell, This used to be my Playground, Take A Bow, I'll Remember, Rain, Oh Father, Love Don't live here Anymore, Something to Remember, and many more. There are some new songs in this collection: One More Chance, You'll See, and i think the Marvin Gaye classic, I want You. Madonna's voice shines on her ballads, great alto! This is a album worth remembering.

5 out of 5 stars Greatness shines on this ballad hits collection.......2006-03-27

Yes. Yeeees !. This one has the most, when it comes to a touch of genius when it comes to ballad singin/song writing. The weakest one are the "new songs" on this 1995 CD. Track 1 I want you (with Massive Attack) sure sparks quality, but that comes from Madonna`s voice and not from Massive Attacks musical work. Too much musical "attack" in a way. Track 2 I`ll remember, we are back in buisness again, which shows quality Madonna all over, with a voice from "heaven above". Like angel dust balsam you ears in a way. Track 3 Take a bow, with it`s eastern/japanese begining it`s a ballad which glimmers shiny and bright all trough. A very soul uplifting song this one. A ballad with a big B. Track 4 You`ll see is one of the better "new" songs on this CD, but the x-factor to lift it up above average missing. Track 5. Crazy for you. Is a Madonna classic from here early classical period. A gem back then, and ok listen nowaydays too. Track 6 This used to be my playground, has everything included if you wanna find a hit song that delivers in every department. Very cool, very relaxable, and very Madonna. And that`s a quality trademark for sure. Track 7 Live to tell, has much of the same trademarks, and it`s from the classical Madonna period, which shows Madonna with her "masters voice" brings glory on every note she sings. Track 8 Love don`t live here anymore (Remix) has a wide open soundpicture, and angel strings/syntheseisers blippin` up here and there, and makes this a minor gem all trough.
Track 9 Something to remember is a minor let down. It`s to ordinary in a way, but the singing is great though. Track 10 Forbidden love, is more in the nightclub whisperin` country. It`s soulfull and has a spirit of greatness here and there, but that`s all folks. Track 11 One More chance, it`s the best one of the "new ones". An acoustic interesting song, but it`s very simpel. To simpel, and not speaks out glory. Track 12 Rain, as an inspired opening , and soon changes into, sorry to say lesser inspired middel and the end. But there is something there. Track 13 Oh Father, is a simpel ballad. To simpel, and rather forgetable when it come`s to the end. Too much earcandy in a way. Track 14 I want you ( here we go again with Massive Attack (Orchestral version) Nuff said already, because this is the same song as the first one. Anyway greatness shines on this ballad hits collection, of one of the realy mega artists in pop heaven which always delivers.

Dave Matthews Band's first album, Remember Two Things, was self-released in 1993, and was reissued by RCA in 1997. Truly serious Dave Matthews fans all have well-worn copies on the original Bama Rags label, and will tell you they bought them from Dave himself. But if you're less of a hard-liner, this package will do nicely. It's a live album, with the exceptions of "Seek Up" and "Minarets," and the band's sound is pretty much all there. So are the radio hits from Under the Table and Dreaming. If you want only one live document, Live at Red Rocks has more key tracks. But no Dave Matthews fan wants only one live document. Bonus Track (of sorts): "Seek Up (Reprise)." --Gavin McNett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great album.............2007-03-28

REMEMBER TWO THINGS is an excellent introduction to the Dave Matthews Band. Some of their best songs are featured here. How would I describe the band, and keep it short and sweet? I would call them a fusion of rock, ska, pop, world beat and jazz all rolled into one. Two of my favorite cuts here are "Ants Marching," a great, up-tempo number, and "Sattelite," which is introspective and melodious. Not only is this a great band, technically, but David Matthews' songs are pure poetry. These aren't typical of the songs you usually hear on the radio. Matthews has a lot to say, and it isn't only about love lost and found. Great album.....

5 out of 5 stars Dave Matthews Band's Debut Album.......2006-12-22

As a recent DMB fan, I have to give this album 5 stars for its creativity and diverseness. This album is the first album released by Dave Matthews Band, originally released independently in 1993, however, it was re-released in 1997 by a major record company, RCA. The album was recorded live, except for one or two tracks, if you are looking for some of the earliest and most creative DMB, this album is it. Since it's a live album, the band sounds great (like most other live concerts the band performs). If you are just starting out with DMB, though, you might want to pick up a live album with a greater variety of songs from the entire DMB career, since this album is one of their very first recordings. A great album for just starting to get into DMB is The Central Park Concert.

One post claims that the albums cover is hideous, when in fact it is a very creative and artistic album cover. Even though one may pass it for the front of a school notebook or the array of letters shown for security on checks, the album cover art is an autostereogram which, when focused on correctly with one's eyes, shows a pattern of person's hand giving the peace sign. (edited from wikipedia) You sort of have to 'relax' your eyes when staring at it, if you click on the image to enlarge it and stare at it you can sort of see it, but if you go to a record store and try it (or you buy the album) you can see the '3-D' image.

2 out of 5 stars WHY?.......2006-01-25

Alright, here's the deal. I've never really liked Dave Matthews. I like about two songs. That's it. Sampling this didn't help draw me in any more, that's for sure. It's not any worse than his other stuff though.

However, I just needed to say this: What in the bloody heck were they THINKING with that album cover? I mean, honestly, album covers are supposed to help entice people to buy the album. If I were on the fence about the album, seeing that cover would put me in the "don't buy" state of mind. Obviously diehards are going to buy the album no matter what, but I guess DMB doesn't give a crap about bringing anyone else in if they're going to put out something with that poor of an album cover. Honestly. That's the whole point in the graphic design business--to appeal to the eye and make people want whatever the subject is. COMMON SENSE, jeez.

K. I'm done with my rant.

5 out of 5 stars How many bands can do this?.......2005-11-19

Picture this...you go into a place called Trax and record some live music. It is as raw as fresh cut meat and it spreads like wild fire across the nation. Instant stardom and a huge jumpstart in the industry. Dave Matthews Band is totally amazing!

4 out of 5 stars You don't need to be 30 to love DMB!.......2005-08-07

I'm 53, former jazz/rock musician from the 60s and 70s ... In 1996 I had just moved my family, complete with teenaged daughters, to Connecticut when one of them dropped a copy of "Under the Table and Dreaming" (1994) into my hands and asked me to tell her what I thought. Expecting the worst, I slipped it into the player in my car and innocently headed down the road. Within minutes I was hooked! I was stunned! My kids were listening to music better than I had! When I got home, I asked her what other music this band had produced. She told me about "Remember Two Things", their debut album. Once again, I was amazed. A live album, produced by the band itself, that was nearly flawless in execution and musicianship.

For those of my generation who haven't figured it out yet - our kids know about *great* music - and it's in the form of the Dave Matthews Band. If you want to "get down with it" and listen to *real* musicians do it right, Dave and Company have the right combination. If you *really* want to have a flashback, attend a DMB concert and have some real fun! We just got back from Randall's Island, NYC and I haven't been to a concert that good in perhaps 30 years!

Album Description

Deluxe 2-disc CD/DVD reissue of the classic 1971 solo debut album from two-time Rock and roll Hall of Famer David Crosby.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ecstatic.......2007-07-03

This is one of the finest albums of the late sixties early seventies. The remastering is beautiful, the DVD sound amazing. When the engineer had Crosby in the studio about the time that the Dead's American Beauty was being recorded, he ran the recording tapes a double speed. You can hear with a clarity unparalleled for the time.

The band includes so many of the best (look up PERRO, the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra). The songs are meditations. "What Are their Names" is one of the most powerful antiwar songs ever written. The vocals and instrumentals are flawless, mellow, strong. Crosby is to be revered, for this gem alone.

You will not regret.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, disappointing package.......2007-04-07

This is a 5 star recording, but with several caveats. I agree with Adam Janson's review- I also know there is additional music around. It's not hard to go on line and search for a bootleg called "Everybody Here Can Be In The Band." It has some earlier mixes of songs, and additional jams as well as other songs that didn't make the album. There is another live bootleg of Crosby and various Dead members called "David And The Dorks" which was a live concert from December 1970. Why wasn't any of this material used?
Also disappointing is the short picture gallery, which doesn't include all the original pictures from the original record sleeve. And, although a video is listed, there is none.
What a sad way to disappoint those of us who consider this to be one of the greatest albums ever released.
Buyer- beware. You're getting less than you deserve, especially at this high price.

5 out of 5 stars Crosby's masterpiece, with a little help from his friends.......2007-03-07

"I wonder who they are
The men who REALLY run this land?
And I wonder why they run it
With such a thoughtless hand.
What are their names
And on what streets do they live?

I'd like to RUN right over.
and give them a piece of my mind
..."

Still true, 40 years later, huh?

Crosby combines the services of parts of The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Neil Young (see above), Joni Mitchell and others. Everybody sings and plays. Hippies who loved harmony. Great harmonies that float around the room like organ chords flying in Grace Cathedral. Very San Francisco Haight-Ashbury. In the late 60's these groups often gave free concerts, just set up amps in Golden Gate Park and played. There was none of the competition that would come later, music was communal! People report getting a contact-high just from listening.

Particularly wonderful I have always thought, is "Orleans", the laid-back "Mt Tamalpais High", the Title track and Neil Young's song quoted above, is just as true today as in 1969. I like all but the edgy "Cowboy Movie' but don't let that keep you from buying this masterpiece. Jerry Garcia, new to the pedal steel guitar, experimented and took risks a seasoned professional wouldn't do and they all succeed marvelously!

Crosby is at the heights of his powers before drugs and coke would ruin his life.

The new CD version is much better sounding than the murky older one, but is a tad bright in places. The LP still has the best sound.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing album, somewhat disappointing reissue.......2007-03-03

David Crosby's "If I Could Only Remember My Name" is an excellent, five star album featuring a number of wonderful guests. It is superb and deserves much more recognition that it gets. You can read the other reviews here or on the page of the original album release to hear more about that. What I'm not happy about is getting only ONE bonus track with the remaster. I've heard over a complete CD of different versions and different songs out there from these sessions. Why not release a 2 CD Legacy Edition with that material? They surely have access to it. This is a disappointing move by the label and I can only assume was done so as to not impede sales of the David Crosby box set "Voyage" released at the same time (which is excellent, by the way). When will we see these extra tracks officially released?

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece Of Sustained Mood.......2007-02-26

Very few albums start out flawless and continue to build on that brilliance until the last note sounds. "If I Could Only..." is so stunning and enveloping in it's vision and direction it sounds like it could been recorded over the course of one long, lazy night with the tape machines just left running. "Cowboy Movie" is both frightening and engrossing with Crosby's vocal gradually surging with agitation, fear and defiance while the Grateful Dead and co. chug along behind him riding an insistent riff off into the sunset. "Laughing" featuring some of Jerry Garcia's finest steel guitar is so great it makes me weep every time I hear it. This is the album as art, not a collection of singles or half-finished ideas, but a cohesive, full bodied work that stunningly shows the power of the first and finest instrument; the voice. PERFECT.
