Ah, this is jingle bell rock the way it's supposed to be, with driving guitars, splashy drums, and full stereo separation. The Ventures' Christmas Album just might be the best rock & roll holiday record ever made. The instrumental twang kings deliver pretty much what you'd expect--note-for-note renditions of standards, all dressed up with ubiquitous sleigh bells as well as the requisite reverb. What really makes this disc a blast though is the way the quartet weaves 1960s pop signatures into every tune; warping "Woolly Bully" into "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "I Feel Fine" into "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," and so on. Spin this and let your party guests have fun guessing which hit single will morph into a Christmas classic. --Michael Ruby
Customer Reviews:
THE rock Christmas album with great sound.......2007-06-28
This is the EMI version from 1990, now on Razor & Tie, remastered from the 3-track multi-track tapes for excellent stereo sound.
fun alternative christmas music.......2007-06-15
christmas at the beach. fun and different. enjoyable year round cause it's the ventures!
ALLRIGHT.......2007-01-10
Very much early Ventures, but always enjoyable, a welcome addition to my Ventures collection, which I think stands at about 35 at present, and I can still order more from Amazon, is'nt that fantastic
Humbug!.......2006-12-15
The Ventures Christmas album was originally released in 1965. It features Christmas songs played in the group's trademark instrumental style. Most of the songs start with the first few seconds of a familiar rock hit, before transforming into a Christmas song. Some examples: "Sleigh Ride" opens with "Walk, Don't Run". "Santa Claus is Coming To Town" opens with "Wooly Bully". "Jingle Bells" opens with "What'd I Say". "Jingle Bell Rock" opens with "Memphis". "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" opens with "I Feel Fine". And "Frosty the Snowman" opens with "Tequila". Frequently, riffs from the rock hit that opens the song will be repeated later in the song. The song titled "Snowflakes" is really "Greensleeves". "Scrooge" is an original tune. This is a really fun album, which will bring a smile to the faces of fans of instrumental rock. The Ventures version of "Sleigh Ride" happens to be my favorite version of that tune.
great, hilarious ... just a wee bit short.......2004-12-11
i ordered this from amazon and am just now giving it my second listen through ... nothing quite puts you in that xmas spirit like "walk, don't run," blending into "sleigh bells." (unless it's james brown's, "santa claus, go straight to the ghetto.")
everything that every reviewer said here is on the mark. if you're familiar with instrumental surf, this album is simply a *must*. if you're intimate with the ventures, i challenge to listen to this album and not laugh out loud at least once.
the ONLY reason i ding it a star is it clocks in at 27 minutes. say what? even in the vinyl days this would be considered a short board on the big wave of music.
so yeah, maybe the original was just that long, but hey, the publisher could've put *something* else on that space ... other ventures, other surf band xmas songs, a 2-fer with something cool, dick dale's "hava nagila," SOMEthin' ...

Album Description
The Kustard Kings' 2002 Confidential Recordings release "Blam!" was hailed as a tour-de-force, and marked the recording debut of this popular instrumental pop-funk-lounge combo. And now, here comes "A Kustard Kristmas"!
The season finds the Kings sending out a joyous and unique interpretation of the holiday spirit. Since their formation in 1992, the Kings have not only honed their signature, wickedly tight sound, they have become the perfect house band for the renowned NYC-based Loser's Lounge tribute series. Loser's Lounge honorees have included Burt Bacharach, David Bowie and Brian Wilson. Over the years, The Loser's Lounge performances have featured guest appearances by the likes of John Flansburgh (They Might Be Giants), Deborah Harry, Lee Hazelwood, James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), Bob Mould, Joey Ramone, Ronnie Spector and Paul Williams.
"A Kustard Kristmas," from Confidential Recordings, brings New York's finest instrumental pop-funk-lounge combo to the forefront, as they step out with their upbeat take on the holiday. The album features original tunes and some new twists on a few chestnuts. With their patent-pending sound, you may still be listening to "A Kustard Kristmas" long after the holidays are over.
Customer Reviews:
Kristmas Time is Here.......2004-12-19
This album certainly made my yuletide bright. This is a collection of 15 Xmas tracks by the band best known as the core of Lower Manhattan's legendary Losers Lounge (an approximately monthly series of tribute concerts.) In addition to being a great holiday album, this is an amusing homage to 1970s instrumental rock. The band affectionately and accurately parodies everyone from King Crimson to the pre-Stevie Nicks version of Fleetwood Mac to the Allman Brothers to the Raybeats. My second-favorite track is a cover of "Welcome Christmas" from "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" done the way Focus would have done it. My first-favorite is Joe McGinty's original tune "Snow Globe Sympheonette" which is pure Kustard Kings.
This is a Christmas album you could stand listening to the other 11 months of the year, so go ahead and order it even if it won't arrive before December 24!
WOW!!!!!!!.......2004-11-20
This is the BEST, most RE-LISTENABLE, AMAZING, record!!!!!I've listened to this CD about a thousand times, and it's still as amazing as the first time I heard it. I can't belive that this is the first review it's gotten so far- because the critics should be raving madley about it!!!!! I'm extreamy happy that this CD is around and availible to the world- everyone who celebrates any winter holiday and music in general. YAY FOR THE KUSTARD KINGS AND THIER AWESOME MUCIC!!!!!!

christmas with a twist.......2000-09-27
You can see more reviews of this item for the out-of-print domestic version. This is a Japanese import (or at least mine was), the sound quality is comparable to a remastered sixties recording, each song has a lead-in from a popular song, e.g., "What I Say", "Wooly Bully", "Memphis", "Tequila," "I Feel Fine" etc., which should appeal to anyone with a sense of humor. I was afraid that I would find the lead-ins a bit too wacky, but it works. The bonus track, though an alternate of another song on the disc, is sufficiently different to be a genuine bonus. The renditions are vintage Ventures.
The group is predictable, the style is light and humorous, the sound is excellent, the tunes are familiar... What more can I say?
