Their best in 20 years.......2007-07-13
The Scorpions have joined Iron Maiden as 2 of the old groups to put forth a great effort on their latest release. I haven't been this impressed with a Scorpions cd since the mid to late 80's. Klaus' voice sounds incredible, and the lyrics and music are top notch. There is a reason why people are still buying this music, because todays rock bands have forgotten about the guitar as a fundamental instrument. If you're a fan of the Scorpions, you won't be disappointed.
Be Cool! Just Buy It........2007-07-12
I want to rate these songs objectively;
Humanity Hour : 4.5/5
The Game of Life : 4/5
We Were Born To Fly : 5/5
The Future Never Dies : 3/5
You're Loving Me To Death : 4/5
3-2-1 : 5/5
Love Will Keep Us Alive : 4/5
We Will Rise Again : 4/5
Your Last Song : 3/5
Love is War : 3/5
The Cross : 3.5/5
Humanity : 5/5
This is a GREAT album.......2007-07-11
This is the best Scorpions Album since Love Drive. I have been listening to the Scorps since they were "THE" underground band when I was in high school. So I go back to Virgin Killers and before. This Album is GREAT. To those talking about the Scorps losing their "sting" you can't expect 55 + year olds to write an album of anger like their old stuff. This album shows a mature group of successful musicians doing what they do best. That is writing songs with great melody and believe me, when they need to get heavy they do. I cannot stop listening to this opus. One song is catchier than the next. Klaus sounds unreal and Mathias lets it rip when he needs too..... Buy this CD as you will not be sorry.... ALBUM OF THE YEAR HANDS DOWN...... Desmond Child is a RICH Man for a reason..... The songs, playing and production are all top shelf.
Humanity-Hour 1.......2007-07-11
Scorpions did it again. Great CD, we can't stop listening to the songs, especially the song Humamity.
Reminds me of old!.......2007-07-11
I've always preferred the Uli Jon Roth 70s era Scorpions to anything that came after and you'd have to go all the way back to 1982's "Blackout" to find a Scorpions album that I thought had more good songs on it than bad.
But a friend was playing this in the car the recently and I have to admit I like it. Liked it enough to get a copy myself. And like it more every time I listen to it. It's even made me curious about some of the other stuff I've missed; now I'll have to look at the rest of their more recent material and give the ones with the highest reviews a listen.
Bottom line, if, like me, you gave up on the Scorpions when they became "Hair-metal", give this CD a listen, it's pretty darn good.

Followed Up by "in Search of the Lost Chord", "to Our Children's Children" and "a Question of Balance", the Band Carved a Niche in the Pop Music World that was Imitated and Emulated by Others. Like Many Other Groups of the Era, They Recorded Sessions at the BBC for Various Radio and TV Broadcasts and Those Sessions Are Presented on this Double CD Set. Cd1 Has all their Stunning Live-in-the-studio Radio Transmissions While Cd2 Includes the Audio from TV Show Tapings, Including an Appearance on "The Tom Jones Show" that was Misplaced for Many Years.

Technical Flaws.......2007-07-04
Always nice to hear the Moodies. It's just so dissapointing to hear songs recorded ,what I would call, unprofessionally. Tracks ending abruptly. Fading in or out at the wrong places. Canned music, blended in, is not exciting. But, It's got a lot of great moments and brings back good memories. Voices aren't always great but I guess there wasn't a lot of material to choose from.
Forty-one tracks for your pleasure. Are you sitting comfortably? .......2007-06-19
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
They earned the title "Magnificent Moodies" early on. The assemblage of the BBC tracks only further solidifies the reward. While the double package is called "Live At The BBC 67-70" there is more! The second disc is audio from TV tapings.
If you are a collector of must have Moody Blues recordings this entered the list the second it left the factory. For those that purchased some of their material in the past it will give you another side of the band. The track listings couldn't be a better representation of the collective genius from the group. Not only are the hits and radio tracks available for your enjoyment but some of the more esoteric and underrated tunes ("Best Way To Travel", "Visions Of Paradise, and "The Actor"). "Best Way To Travel" has never received the acclaim it deserves. While previously tracks were available as a bonus on special SACD pressings, this gives it to you in the full and proper dose.
Before we check out some of their superlative versions of their own material it must be written how great the cover of the Animals hit "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" was constructed.
The back-to-back combination of "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Ride My See-Saw" offers enough exquisite beauty to enthrall the harshest critic but "Lovely To See You (With the acoustic guitar sounding as if it is in your living room) could accelerate the pulse of the most docile individual.
As you sample the choice cuts don't forget to digest the short version of "Nights In White Satin" clocking in a shade over three minutes."
Could you ever get enough versions of "Gypsy"? Its inclusion here only solidifies it's golden splendor.
Forty-one tracks for your pleasure. Are you sitting comfortably?
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Good Sounding Moody Blues Stuff!!.......2007-06-12
I was waiting for this 2 cd set to come out for a long, long, time. The sound is pretty good and the song selection is excellent for the time it was recorded. At least on this BBC recording, unlike other BBC live recordings, it doe not have an announcer before each song with on occasion, a one question interview with a band member. I find that part unnecessary and am glad its not on this set. The only problem I have with this set is the editing. Moody Blues songs usually have great endings to their songs but on this release the endings are cut off and an audience applause in put in rather bluntly at times which cheapens the recordings. The sound is great for a BBC live set-average stereo but the songs seem cut off and shortened in places--- I guess to save room for other songs. This results in the whole song version not heard at times. That is probably the only thing wrong with this 2 cd set. It ought to be re-edited and the songs presented the way they were played--take out a few if you have to but lets keep the original song in. Despite this problem, I recommend this set highly. Do not let it get away. Enjoy Moody fans!!!!!!!!!! Good linear notes and pictures also.
Historic stuff.......2007-06-01
If you have the new SACD special editions of the "core 7" original albums you've already heard most of these tracks. They were added as "special material" to those releases. However, as the other poster mentioned if you didn't want to spring the big money for albums you already own here they are, collected on two discs. The quality is no great shakes for the most part - mostly mid-range and brittle highs, but these date from over thirty years ago, and for radio to boot. The performances in many cases are a bit suspect as well; in some cases the instrumental sections sound identical to the studio versions with live vocals added. I think the Moodies did occasionally do this, considering how dense their studio recordings were it's no wonder. Other tracks however are totally live . . . they're ragged compared to the studio counterparts but have a wonderful energy that makes them a treasure on their own terms.
The studio albums are definitely the best way to acquaint one's self with these songs if you haven't already, but for the hardcore fan this is a very worthwhile release to add to the library.
A Christmas Gift Long Overdue!.......2007-05-26
Just as I was about to post a scathing review criticising the way the BBC material was spread out among the new deluxe editions, I saw this upcoming release and smiled. It's like waking up one morning and finding a gift from some Christmas long ago that you knew was there but couldn't find. For years I have been wondering why the Moodies haven't released their BBC sessions like artists such as Hendrix, Cream, Jack Bruce, The Who, The Beatles, Zeppelin, and even Kaleidoscope have done. Then I saw that they were releasing the material but you have to buy the original albums (which most of us have done more than once)again to get it all. Finally, in one complete volume, is everything that was salvaged from the vaults. It's like the Moodies reunited completely, jumped in a time machine, and made a new album for a new millenium. I am giddy in expectation of this collection!

every good boy deserves favour.......2007-07-10
in the 1960's and early 1970's the moody blues were in a league of there own for inspired, inticate and creative popular music. This album continued the high standard of there earlier albums. This album in SACD is superb and the standard of production is stunning and lends itself brilliantly to this remastering technology. It sounds as if the band is present and performing in front of you.
Excellent! Great! Beautiful! Delightful! Fantastic! ~ Deluxe Edition!:).......2007-06-28
*The following comments are in regard to the bonus tracks on this release. To read my opinions on the original content of this album, check out my review under:
"Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" by The Moody Blues (Audio CD - 1997) - Original recording remastered
Here is what I enjoyed about each of these outstanding bonus offerings...
"The Story in Your Eyes" (Original version):
Either this was a slightly slowed-down version of the final version or the final version was speeded up a tad ... Either way, a nice job on the heavy mellotrons on the choruses. The vocals made the song sound like a BBC remake, featuring the original instrumental track. At the end of the track, you can hear a voice that sounds like Denny Laine chanting in falsetto (Ala "From The Bottom Of My Heart, I Love You" from "The Magnificent Moodies"), but it's hard to tell who's voice it really is! A really catchy version of this rockin' Justin Hayward classic. :)
"The Dreamer:"
This composition, featuring Ray Thomas on vocals, would have fitted nicely on his "Hopes, Wishes, And Dreams" album, as the music style sounds closer to his solo effort than a Moody Blues song ... Still, it's an impressive haunting and driving tune, and makes for a nice "Thomas Trilogy" on this release, along with his two "E.G.B.D.F." compositions, all unique in sound, but all fantastic in their own way. :)
*Something I forgot to add to my original review of this album was that the opening chant of "DESOLATION," from "Procession," would make for an amusing ring tone for a cell phone, if there isn't already a sound file of this available! Imagine hearing this on somebody's phone while waiting on line at the bank or grocery store?! :)
Just like the 1997 CD remaster of "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour," this Deluxe Edition also featured a topnotch remastering job! I would recommend this release to any Moody Blues fan or collector. Thanks for reading! God Bless... :)
INTENSE re-mastering..........2007-04-24
This review is based on the CD portion of the disc only.
If you are hoping these "deluxe editions" will sound even better than the re-mastered discs of `97 you will be disappointed. The old re-masters sound much more pleasant to the ears than these "deluxe" discs. Doing a side by side comparison, using top of the line monitors, these "deluxe" versions don't come close to the last round of re-masters which breath much better. The "deluxe" versions have been once again aggressively compressed, which means, by the time you've reached the middle to later stages of the album (depending on the album), you may experience some ear fatigue. The sound is unrelenting and it changes the original dynamics. I felt like I was hearing a whole new mix, which is a sign of over compressing. Has the music industry gone compression mad? Or, were the Moodies worried that their back catalogue (the holy seven) lacked musical muscle, and super charging it with heavy compression is the answer? Or even both?
The bonus tracks were interesting to hear, but not really important unless you are a Moodies fanatic. The booklet's in this "deluxe" series were all a little redundant, you'll be reading a lot of the same text from booklet to booklet, and the picture selection was a bit lacking in imagination in my opinion. Also, it states in the booklet, there's a track 12 which wasn't to be found on my disc.
In conclusion, after hearing all of these "SACD Deluxe Editions," I'll be keeping my old (1997) re-masters, after all, they still look and sound great. Perhaps the other two layers of these "deluxe editions" will be rewarding, but if you still haven't bought any of these yet, you are way ahead of the game.
Quadraphonic realized!.......2007-04-21
This gem from 1971 includes some of the Moody Blues best works. The stand-out cut for this hybrid SACD is the amazing, "Procession", in which the Moodies attempted to document the progression of music through the years. In stereo, it was always a revelation, but in surround sound the original quadraphonic mix is reproduced with exquisite clarity and definition. The song literally dances around the room. The entire album exudes new life through this new mix - however, the center speaker does not emit sound; only the four individual speakers (left and right front and left and right rear), plus the subwoofer. The unreleased bonus tracks are a welcome surprise, with the original version of, "The Story In Your Eyes" at an extra half minute added. It's more of a `free' mix towards the end sounding more like a tight `jam'. The Hayward/Thomas addition of "The Dreamer" is a pleasant song and this is the first time it has been available. Note that the bonus tracks are in stereo only; an unexplained mystery on an album mixed for multi-channels. Also note that the bonus song, "After you Came" listed on the booklet does not exist on the CD - a major faux-paus!
Please note that all Moody Blues Hybrid SACD's do not reproduce the front central channel - a result of the original quadraphonic tape mixing
There's More...(We Hope) !!.......2007-04-14
I love this recording, and it's (at least) twice as good in Quadraphonic ! Thank you, Polygram ! If you're a Moodies fan, BUY IT ! 'Nuf said-you know you're getting a gem here...But you might not know this---- Where's the SACD re-issue in 5.1 of "Blue Jays" by Justin Hayward and John Lodge ? Still to come ? and soon (I hope) ? We need to make some noise, fellow fans...BECAUSE-It was briefly available as a Quadraphonic 4 channel reel-to-reel tape, just as all the Moody Blues albums through "Seventh Sojourn" except "Magnificent Moodies" (1st LP) and "In Search of the Lost Chord" (3rd LP) were. Well, ALL the Moody multi-channels have been re-issued as SACDs, so where's the re-issue in 5.1 of "Blue Jays" ? THIS ALBUM WAS THE BEST MULTI-CHANNEL RELEASE by ANY artist I'VE EVER HEARD ! Also, Ray Thomas' "From Mighty Oaks" was a matrix-encoded Quadraphonic LP record release, so there should be some discrete master tapes of that in the vaults, too...Let's hope we see SACD re-issues of both of these wonderful 'solo' releases, as well !

Recorded at Abbey Road in 1975 and released in 1976, the idea for the Project came from manager and writer Eric Woolfson, who saw his role as an auteur, bringing together some of the greatest talents in music to bring to life Poe's sinister, gothic tales. Enlisting the white-hot production whiz-kid Alan Parsons, fresh from his work with Wings and Pink Floyd, the duo set about making dreams reality. The album remains a singular, compelling work and can be seen as a bridge between Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon and Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds. Universal.

ABSOLUTELY SUPERB EDITION.......2007-07-02
This set caps the re-release of the first four AP-supervised remastered titles (three more to follow in September '07, and the final three in December).
For this edition, for the first time on CD, we finally get the original 1976 mix of the album that started it all. While I definitely prefer the '87 remix, there are passages in the original I also enjoy, so it's great to finally be able to compare the two, especially in glorious, remastered form.
In the additional material, there are two excellent spoken-word pieces: One, Orson Welles' entire original recitation, sans music/effects, and also a very enjoyable 1976 radio interview with AP and EW.
The booklet is a wonderful, detailed labor of love, with a great essay.
If you're an APP fan, this is an absolute must-own.

Love them Scorpions!.......2007-07-03
What can I say, these guys continue to amaze me! If you love the Scorps you must have this cd! They continue to Rock N Roll the way they always have, superbly! Trust me,you will not be dissapointed.Keep up the good work guys!
A second straight solid album from the German rockers.......2007-06-20
The Scorpions' latest release "Humanity: Hour I" is a collection of thoughtful rock anthems that revolve around the theme that mankind as a whole is losing its' humanity and needs to reclaim it. The Scorpions are not the first band to have a somber, "the end is near" mood encompass an entire album (see Ozzy Osbourne's "Ultimate Sin") but they do a good job of putting together some good, nice-to-listen-to, songs while at the same making the listener stop and think for a bit.
What's encouraging here from a musical perspective is that the Scorpions have now released a second solid studio album in a row (following "Unbreakable") and do not appear to look like an aging band whose act is tiring out. On the contrary, it looks like they got a lot more rockin' to do. And for us Scorpions fans, that is, indeed, good news.
Scorps Still Stinging!.......2007-06-14
It's true, rock fans - Scorpions have created THE rock album of the year and one of the best in their long history. From the opening riff of Hour 1, it's clear that Germany's greatest rock band has come to rock you like only they can. The group has teamed with songwriter/producer par excellence Desmond Child in a calculated effort to update their sound, while retaining all of the classic Scorpions sting. The record has a loose concept forewarning of a future where man will be pitted against intelligent robots of his own making. Granted, it's not a new theme by any stretch, but it's the songs that really matter and the band delivers in spades with several of the heaviest tracks they've ever recorded and some very fine ballads that stand up to anything in their catalog. This record also sees a marked increase in the amazing lead guitar work of Mathias Jabs, one of the great metal players of the last 20 (almost 30!) years. He shreds up a storm on tracks like "We Were Born To Fly" and the super-heavy "We Will Rise Again". Singer Klaus Meine has also delivered perhaps his most incredible performance to date. At 59, it's apparent that this vocalist of vocalists is still improving, making his well-documented vocal problems (nodes, total voice loss, two surgeries, therapy, etc.) of the early 80s a distant memory. While Meine can still wail with the best, he also employs the lower register of his range to great effect, as evident on "Love Is War". Throughout the disc, his harmonies are more spellbindingly gorgeous than ever, provoking chills on "The Future Never Dies" and "Love Will Keep Us Alive". The writing chores seem to have been split evenly between the three principals, Rudolf Schenker, Meine and Jabs with help from Child and the versatile Marti Frederiksen (who collaborated with particularly fine results with Jonny Lang on Lang's "Long Time Coming" disc from 2003). This is Jabs' largest contribution to the writing of a Scorpions record since he replaced the legendary Uli Roth in 1979. If you include the Limited Edition bonus track, "Cold", Jabs boasts 5 credits to Schenker and Meine's 4 each. The amazing thing is that every track is uniquely a Scorpions song in every way, with just the right balance of classic and modern. No doubt this CD will do well in Europe, where the band is still big, especially in Russia and surrounding countries, where they're the near-equivalent of The Beatles in their prime of popularity in the West. Album closer, "Humanity" has world-wide smash written all over it and it won't be surprising to see it repeat the global success of "Wind of Change" in 1990. This is a band who has found their stride yet again with a lyrically and musically mature record packed with all of the hallmarks that have made Scorpions one of the biggest selling rock acts in the world. If you like real guitar-driven rock music with substance and more hooks than a tackle shop, BUY THIS CD!!!
Best Scorpions album since Love at First Sting. Really!.......2007-06-14
This album rocks! The Scorpions have put a solid effort into this album. The production, the sound, tone of the guitars as well as the guitar playing is outstanding. Hour 1 and 321 are excellent tracks. It reminded me of their earlier work which brought them to superstardom in the early 80's. This does not mean that the songs are dated or anything. They have the Scorpions sound and feel, but mature. The funny thing is, we have twin daughters 2.5 years old. I put on 321 and then asked them if they wanted to ROCK? We had 5 encores of 321. My wife thinks the Scorpions are soooo 80's, but thought the album was very well made. Anyway I would recommend this album to anyone who wants to own a great rock album.
The Scorpions have really regained their sting.......2007-06-12
I'm very impressed with this album. It's by far one of the best Scorpions album. I thought it was great how they teamed up with American producer Desmond Child to create this masterpiece. Desmond's work has really shown off here. This is no rehash of Scorpions faves, this is a real NEW album. Different sound for the Scorpions. Modern rock+Classic rock. That's how it sounds. I recommend this to any music fan. It's a shame it's not released domestically here in the US, though, that way the Scorpions' record sales with rocket.

Mike Pinder's Lost World.......2007-05-25
If anything, this final CD reissue of the Moody Blues initial seven records will remind the listener how vital Mike Pinder was to the Moody Blues. On each track of Seventh Sojourn, his arrangements come to fore, his stamp is on each track. The wispy figure in "New Horizons", the swirls in "You and me" and "Singer in a rock and roll band", the thick flute sounds of "My Lady". These are some of Pinders most imaginative moments in Moody Blues history.
He also provides the much-needed edge on this release, compensating for the rather sedate predecessor "Every Good Boy". On Seventh Pinder uses a Chamberlain to great effect, producing a cleaner, brighter, less murky sound than the mellotron used on subsequent recordings. Pinder also opts for one of the few bona-fide Justin Hayward guitar solo's (and a memorable one) on his composition "When You're a Free Man".
"Seventh" was recorded during a period of band fatigue. Like the Beatles, they had spent most of the early adult life together. The liner notes detail the unusual length of time (for the Moodies) spent in 1972 on completing this eight song album.
Fans will not want to miss the 4 bonus tracks. The never before released 8 minute version of "Life Strange' is the first highlight- opening with a piano count in omitted in the standard release. The clarity of this version is better, one can hear the pump organ breathing and wheezing through the track. . However, the big surprise is when after the oboe fade sequence Pinder's Chamberlain swoops in to begin a 2 minute instrumental section. As is, it seems to have been left unfinished-to these ears, it seems to have been laid down as the background for a big guitar solo. It's assumed the band decided to leave this section off the track before atempting overdubs.
The "Lost World" instrumental demo is another revelation and the highlight of this release. It opens quite differently than the released version with a prominent, ominous guitar riff, and has a slight 70s soul sound to it. (Not too surprising, considering Pinders r&b roots.) The drumming also has more of a soul feel to it, and it really stands as a track on its on-it would fit nicely into a soundtrack.
"Island" appears to be an abandoned track with a scratch vocal, the chorus is not developed, (Justin Hayward scats this section) and what remains is a basic backing track with a neat ascending Chamberlain figure that repeats in intensity until the end of the track. What is also interesting about this track is that the band recorded this as early as Feb 1973- only a few months after "Seventh Sojourn" had hit the top of the charts. The liner notes make no mention of any other recording attempts after "Island" and after a long lull of seeming inactivity the band embarked on a world tour (perhaps obliged by contractual reasons) in Sept. 1973 ending in Feb. 74 in San Francisco.
One hopes a live concert from one of the 74 concerts is eventually released. The song selection was challenging (the concert opened with "Higher and Higher" which morphed into "Out and In", and numbers such as "Eternity Road", "One More Time to Live","Watching and Wating" and an extended "Legend of a Mind" were performed.)
"Seventh Heaven," Deluxe Edition! :).......2007-05-20
*The following comments are in regard to the bonus tracks on this release. To read my opinions on the original content of this album, check out my review under:
"Seventh Sojourn" by The Moody Blues (Audio CD - 1997) - Original recording remastered
Here is what I enjoyed about each of these outstanding bonus offerings...
"Isn't Life Strange" (Original Version):
The piano "count in" was a surprise, as I don't believe a piano was anywhere to be heard on the final version of the song! The instrumental break, that was edited out of the final version, was beautifully executed and reminded me of "The Voyage" from "On The Threshold Of A Dream" (In certain places) and "The Word (Mellotron mix)" from the Deluxe Edition of "In Search Of The Lost Chord," in true Mike Pinder mellotron style! The fadeout is extended a little further, so we can hear The Moodies singing a tad more than on the final version of the song. :)
"You and Me" (Beckthorns Backing Track):
This version of the song blew me away with the keyboard tracks in place of the vocals ... To me, the instrumentation sounded similar to the mellotrons heard on "The World Today," from Mike Pinder's 1994 release, "Among The Stars." The extra instrumentation, that was edited out of the finished product, was a treat, as well! Sounds like background music that could be used during a Moody Blues radio interview. :)
"Lost in a Lost World" (Instrumental Demo):
The haunting electric guitars, in place of the vocals, really grabbed my attention on this version of the song ... This riff sounds more like David Gilmour's style (Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason," in places) than Justin Hayward's! What a wickedly beautiful sound! :)
"Island:"
Until this reissue came along, this amazing unreleased gem would have made a fine bonus track to Justin Hayward's "Songwriter." The tune also reminds me of something Justin would have come up with for "A Question Of Balance," had The Moodies created the song at that time. More magnificent mellotron/Chamberlain playing from Mike Pinder, yet again! "Island" definitely has that "'Classic 7' Moody Blues" feel to it. :)
Just like the 1997 CD remaster of "Seventh Sojourn," this Deluxe Edition also featured a topnotch remastering job! I would recommend this release to any Moody Blues fan or collector. Thanks for reading! God Bless... :)
CD vs. SACD...some people just don't get it..........2007-04-26
The focus of this review is sound quality only; as such, it is restricted to the SACD version/disc on this two-disc package. The only reason to pay the cost of these reissues (I suspect most true fans have already bought the five albums released last year) is the high resolution available via the SACD format. If we take for granted that you have the necessary hardware to properly decode/playback this format, then these reissues are well worth the extra cost, as they reveal greater dynamic range, increased resolution and 'air', and a far deeper and wider soundstage (even through two channels). By the way, these are NOT 5.1, but 4.1 (they were sourced from the quad mixes, remember?). Some of the very minor audio drawbacks that plagued the DVD-A 'Perceptions' box-set by the Doors (see my review there for more details) are also present here, but overall, this SACD offers sound quality that comes about as close to the warmth of fine analog as the digital format currently allows. Remember, these recordings (these comments can be extended to include the SACD version of 'Every Good Boy Deserves Favor') are 35+ years old. By the way, the only "compression" I noticed was when I wore my headphones too tight, so I'm at a loss to explain the observation expressed elsewhere; perhaps Home-Theatre-In-A-Box strikes again, who knows?
For example, the song "For My Lady" seems to have lost all it's relaxed nature and Ray's vocals were lost in the mix! Has the music industry gone compression mad? Or, were the Moodies worried that their back catalogue (the holy seven) lacked musical muscle, and super charging it with heavy compression is the answer? Or both?
The bonus tracks were very interesting to hear, but not really important unless you are a Moodies fanatic. The booklet's in this "deluxe" series are all a little redundant, you'll be reading a lot of the same text from booklet to booklet. The picture selection was a bit lacking in imagination. It appears that the people responsible for the booklets went with one photo session. Is that lazy or boring?
In conclusion, after hearing all of these "SACD Deluxe Editions," I'll be keeping my old (1997) re-masters, after all, they still sound great. Perhaps the other two layers of these "deluxe editions" will be rewarding, but if you still haven't bought any of these yet, you are way ahead of the game.

SACD.......2007-03-09
Awesome. I grew very tired of this album and then the cd after multiple listening sessions. This multi-channel mix is outstanding and brings this music back to life. The separation of the channels is incredible. Instruments pop from various speakers at different times on the different songs. Many times you feel like you are sitting on stage in the middle of the band. Knoppler never sounded better. If you have a 5.1 set up with dvd-a or sacd player capability this is a must have for your collection.
Incredible Sound *****.......2006-08-23
I have a middle of the road high end 5.1 audio system and it came to life with this SACD. The sound quality is magic. I can only hope that I can locate other SACD's out there than can compare in quality of music and recording excellence.

Wouldn't play on Pioneer and Yamaha. PLays on Cambridge Audio and SONY!
Awesome SACD 5.1 Surround Sound.......2006-07-18
This quite possibly is the best quality 5.1 surround sound mix I've ever heard. This is the import only SACD 5.1 CD, not to be confused with the DVD-Audio 5.1 edition available in the U.S. Actually one of the reviews posted here appears to be for the DVD-Audio version. Both versions are playable on standard CD players though the DVD-A is a 2 sided disk where you must flip it over to the other side for the standard CD mix. So, with both Hybrid SACD and DVD-A we now have CD's that can be played on any player though you really need to play them on surround sound systems to get the full appreciation of their sound. Otherwise, why buy it? I will say that most hybrid SACD's I've played on standard CD players (automobile) do sound better than their non-SACD versions.
Well, I do have both the SACD and DVD-A versions (just to show my obsession/love for this CD). The first thing to make clear, the SACD version may or may not have used the same audio source mixes used for the DVD-A version, but they are by no means inferior. The 2 versions truly do sound different. Its hard to describe in words how much additional sonic details come out in the SACD version verses the DVD-A. I have an above average system (not top high end) and I'm able to hear sonic details including guitar passages I've never heard before. One listen to the final song, Brothers in Arms is all it takes though there is not a weak moment song-wise or sound-wise on this SACD. As for the DVD-A, it's still good, but on my system I can't draw out the same details that I'm able to on the SACD version. Maybe has something to do with my DVD player being a SONY SACD/DVD combo player? Or, maybe the SACD version is just that much better. I'll leave that for further debate.
The fact that most people have a surround sound DVD system and not many people have a SACD player does mean the DVD-A will be the more popular version purchased. That is a shame as I just don't hear the same level of detail in the DVD-A 5.1 mix (at least on my system). From a playability perspective, I also prefer the SACD over the DVD-A. When you put the DVD-A in your player you will find it defaults to the standard 2 channel mix and requires you to go into the menu and select the 5.1 mix. With the SACD it will automatically detect the 5.1 mix if played in a SACD player. Also, if you have a multi-disc DVD player, once the DVD-A has finished playing it will not automatically move to the next disc in the changer as this SACD will.
So, if you love this CD and have a SACD player, don't hesitate to purchase this one. As for the DVD-A, I've heard better than this one, but I still believe the DVD-A is a worthwhile purchase if you don't have a SACD player as long as you have surround sound stereo DVD system. It will still provide a new level of enjoyment for listening to this classic Dire Straits CD.
TEN STARS!!! This disc redefines high definition audio!!!.......2006-01-29
I put in the disc and was instantly blown away! Awesome remix, vibrant, rich, no discernable hiss... SURROUND!!!!!!!!! GOOD SURROUND!!!!!!!!!!
Worth every penny and more, WOW! Time and care was put into this release and I'm not surprised. Or maybe I am, in today's cut'n'dirty world of "get it out as cheaply and as basic as possible". Worthy items are worth paying for. This is one of them.
And I'm listening to the Advanced Resoultion CD side right now. I'll be trying the DVD side on my 5.1 theatre later on, but if I'm impressed right now...
Now if only they'd release the B-52s albums in the same format...

Customer Reviews:
Excellent hits album of Steely Dan!!.......2007-03-21
What a wonderful album this is!! This Greatest Hits album of Steely Dan is the one to own. My mother used to have it on LP back in the day, but now I have it on LP, tape and CD. This album was originally released as a 2 record set with a gatefold cover when it first hit the stores in 1978. The regular cassette of this title came out some years later. The CD of this album is an import (from Canada), but it's still the same, retains the cover art and the inside photo of the two guys of Steely Dan with an older man playing a piano in the background. I like most of the songs on this album, and this group is fun to listen to. They are not heavy metal and their music is not the type that will give you a headache. Very mellow and groovy, indeed. For anyone who is just getting acquainted with the oldies and this group, in general, this album is a good start. It has 18 songs on here so there is a generous portion of their material here. And, with having this album on CD, you don't have to change from one record to the other in the way you had to with the 2 LP set back in the day. Get this title while you can!! Don't be scared away by the price though; I think in my own opinion that imported versions of products are slightly more costly than domestic ones. If this title on CD was a domestic release, we would only pay between 10-15 dollars for it, in general. Let Steely Dan put you in the groove!!!
Second-best Dan comp.......2005-09-01
At first glance, you may think, "Wow! Eighteen tracks! This is pretty good!" It is, actually, and it's a lot better than Decade of Dan. However, the problems set in quickly. For instance, the compilation makers obviously don't know there are more good songs on CBT than Do It Again and Reelin' in the Years! At least Dirty Work, if not Kings, should be included. The Countdown to Ecstasy material's good, but what about Boston Rag and Your Gold Teeth? The Pretzel Logic material is strong, other than the absence of Monkey In Your Soul. Any World would've been welcome, but the Katy Lied selections are good. But what about Don't Take Me Alive, from Royal Scam? How about Royal Scam's title track? Thankfully, the selections are strong. Peg...I don't really like Peg, I'm obviously the only Danfan who thinks that way, but oh well. Josie's good, but I could've swapped both for Deacon Blues and Home At Last myself.
This was released a bit before Gaucho, which explains the lack of superb tracks Hey Nineteen and Babylon Sisters. At least they skipped Time out of Mind.
So, do you get this, Decade of Dan or Show Biz Kids? It's all about the money. If you don't want to, or can't, spend much, Decade of Dan should be where you go. If you have a bit more money but still are on a tight budget, here. If you've got a lot of cash, lend me some and check out Show Biz Kids. You could also cheat and buy Citizen Steely Dan, but that costs a small fortune. You could also buy the albums, particularly their first five (Can't Buy a Thrill, Countdown to Ecstasy, Pretzel Logic, Katy Lied, Royal Scam), if you really wanted to go deep.
c'mon... get the anthology, or the albums.......2004-12-14
I know, you're still picturing that big groovy 2-record set you had back in the 70's, with the drink rings on it and the slightly pungent smell when the gatefold was opened...
But face it - those days are over. Do you see any records for sale on Amazon? No. Don't live in the past. If you have to use cd's (well, at least if you're stuck shopping here), make sure you're taking advantage of what they have to offer. There's a pretty stellar 2 disc set titled _Show-Biz Kids_ that only costs a few bucks more than this vaguely overpriced relic, and sounds a whole lot better. Not to mention that it covers a lot more of the group's musical achievements. And if you're a casual fan, thinking that might be more than you'd want to own, trust me - the odds are far greater of the purchase leading to further acquisitions than of it feeling like overkill. The music is just that good. Or if you're really ready to take me at my word, you *could* just start buying the albums... _Pretzel Logic_ and _Aja_ are real winners... or start anywhere, really...
My First Taste of Genius!.......2004-09-07
As a teenager in the 80's, I was familiar with several Steely Dan songs from the radio, but this LP was the first thing of theirs I bought, and it sold me for life. Objectively, this is a solid collection of their many hits and styles, but subjectively, this made me want to go out and buy every one of their albums, which I now have on CD. Their songs just might hold up better than other band I know (including Rush, my absolute favorite band). All I can say is that I will never get tired of listening to this music, since it was obviously built to last!!!
Adequate.......2004-06-21
This is an adequate compilation of the "radio hits". The albums give a more complete picture of the group and should be purchased first. However, this one has "Here at the Western World", which made its initial appearance here. "Greatest Hits" is good for the car. It misses quite a few key tracks, like "FM", "King of the World", "Boston Rag", "Don't Take Me Alive", "Deacon Blues", and anything from "Gaucho" (this preceded "Gaucho" by two years). "Greatest Hits" and the companion "Gold" are good and should be purchased in tandem. I would recommend any of the actual studio albums and the "Complete Steely Dan" box set, with every one of the songs from the first era, 72-80. This will suffice for casual fans and those addicted to the FM dial. Radio programmers will also love this for its conciseness. I would not recommend this to Dan fanatics, though. Two more thoughts: "Chain Lightning" and "Dirty Work" should have been here, and I'd like to see an "official" live SD release from the early 70's ("Record Plant" is only available in bootleg form, but is a must- buy).

discovered Vulture Culture. Wonderful, meaningful lyrics.

Superlative Remastering.......2007-03-31
The sonics on this remastered disc are a little better than the newly remastered "Eye in the Sky". Probably because this LP came out a few years later, and I believe this is an import from Germany. Hawkeye is the cherry of the set. Clean, crisp, full sounding. I only wish this would come out in hi-rez 5.1 multichannel sound. All songs by Alan Parsons should be experienced in surround.

Customer Reviews:
A Classic!.......2007-07-02
This compilation cd is a great collection of Santana favorites. The instrumentals only feature lifts these recordings from a 60's/70's, etc. retrospective into a terrific adult contemporary classic.
Santana The Best Instrumentals.......2007-03-19
This CD has a number of Santana's classic hits like Samba Pa Ti, Flor de Luna, and Soul Sacrifice that I really enjoyed, however, in my opinion those are the only really good songs and this is a mediocre album.
Best Instrumentals.......2006-11-06
This is great collection. This is the flavor of Santana I enjoy most.
From the inside!!.......2005-08-20
This is a very good compilation of only instrumentals by the master. My only regret is that "Every Step of the Way" from "Caravanserai" is missing. That is one of the most powerful Santana songs ever. Also, my favorite in this compilation is "Aquamarina".
Just the music.......2005-01-09
There are many great guitarists in the world but only Carlos Santana can move me like he does. Long ago I made my own version of this album on cassette because I wanted all these great instumentals on one tape. Finally it has been done and been done right. Europa is easily the best instrumental number ever and I would argue one of the best songs of all time. It is perfectly married with all the other great Santana numbers that were usually the best thing on their respective albums.
Put this on, turn the lights down low and lose yourself in the music.
