Customer Reviews:
A mature expedition.......2004-02-26
Just a short one - I really enjoyed this CD. It's not the same Asia as before, but hey, who wants a load of aging rock stars to be doing the same thing for 30 years?
A very good listen - and it does get better with each listen.
PHENOMENAL!.......2002-10-19
I've held off on wrinting a review of this album for over a year. Why? Because I simply could not find the words to express my feelings about this incredible effort. I still will probably not be able to find the words, but here goes.
After their last release, 'ARENA', I told several people, "They're gonna have a hard time topping this one." Boy, was I wrong. [heck], they didn't top it; they BURIED it! 'AURA' towers so far above 'ARENA', it's almost incomprehensible. Jon Payne has finally realized the full potential of that fabulous voice of his. Geoff Downes...well, the name says it all. Guitarist Guthrie Govan is nothing short of brilliant. In fact, Payne & Downes have said that the reason they chose Govan was that he reminded them of a young Steve Howe. And let me tell you - after seeing them at their opening 2001 Tour concert in Kansas City, Guthrie Govan IS a young Steve Howe. (Yes, he's THAT good!) Chris Slade is the band's best drummer since Carl Palmer. Even though he only played on one track on the CD due to illness, his presence in this band is invaluable. ([heck], Slade is one of the best drummers, period.) And some veteran ASIA personnel and sidemen (Elliott Randall, Ian Crichton, Pat Thrall, Michael Sturgis...just to name a few) further add to the power, beauty, texture and richness of this phenomenal album.
Oh, and there aren't just two or three highlights here, either. Every song is at least a 10. At least! The opening salvo of 'Awake' and 'Wherever You Are' is the best one-two punch since McCartney opened his 'BAND ON THE RUN' album with 'Band on the Run' and 'Jet'. The 9-minute epic 'Free' is jaw-dropping musical brilliance. (You should see them do it live. WOW!)
[heck], even the bonus tracks are outstanding.
I could go on and on, ad nauseum. But suffice it to say, as much as I loved Wetton, Howe, Palmer & Downes, it is quite possible, (and I, personally, believe) that this is the best ASIA album ever. EVER!! If it isn't, it's really close. And judging from the MANY reviews of this album that I have read over the last year, I am not the only one who feels that way.
A CD With Depth and Maturity.......2002-08-02
This is perhaps the most consistent Asia release from start to finish since their debut release in 1982. The music and lyrics are mature and thoughtful, the musicianship is first rate. Geoff Downes' trademark 'wall of sound' gives the songs a good, ethereal quality without drowning the fine guitar work that is found throughout the album. John Payne's vocals are passionate and strong. Without a doubt, Aura is the best performance by post Wetton era Asia, and stronger than two of the three Wetton era releases. I recommend the import release, as the three bonus tracks are well worth having.
This Hurts...........2001-11-20
As a long time fan from the beginning this album is a sad dissapointment. In a word rather boring other than 1 or 2 songs there is nothing here to catch the ear. John Payne is a great singer and Geoff Downes is brilliant but I believe they are missing the influence of a strong guitar player in the group to drive songs. The songs here are played well enough but I prefer an Asia album with some "bite" for lack of a better term and this is not it. Aria and Arena both were much more entertaining. Looking forward to the next album hopefully it won't take as long.
Call It "Mellow Yellow".......2001-06-07
A surprisingly mellow detour which lacks the energy and daring of Arena. Although powerful and personal lyrically, the album comes up short musically despite an all-star supporting cast and Payne's strongest vocals yet. Production and arrangements are mostly low-key, creating a mood of melancholy not previously seen. When the disc does catch fire, as on the opening "Awake" and the eight- minute epic "Free," the results rank among the best of Payne's tenure. Special edition digipak contains three bonus tracks which ironically show that a much better album might have been, had the band stayed with their original vision.
