From the heart-amid the storm.......2007-06-30
These songs are both for "regular" worship and for those times when the storms of life are raging. The song that never fails to touch me is "I Will Life My Eyes": worship of God when facing unclimbable mountains, raging storms, or inner pain too deep to share...
This isn't rose-colored-glasses faith. This is faith even when life is so dark you can't see your hand in front of your face.
Bebo Norman has created a much-needed album that breathes hope and peace, whether you are in a season of joy or a season of deep trial. His voice and stylings are perfect for an album such as this.
Bebo Busts Out.......2007-06-18
I've been a Bebo fan since about 96 and have every album, including "The Fabric of Verse". This is his best since "Ten Thousand Days". It's different -- less acoustic -- than those early albums, but it represents the emergence into a new, more up-tempo, "rockier" sound that's proved elusive on the last three albums. In other words, what I feel he's been trying to do on "Try", "Myself When..." and "Big Blue Sky" he finally got it right here. The opening track sets a great tone, but that best ones to me are "Time Takes It's Toll" and "The Way We Mend". They are excellent songs that are as strong lyrically as they are musically. Catchy in a way that few of his songs since "Ten Thousand Days" have been. I highly recommend this album to any Bebo fan, and indeed any fan of good Christian pop music.
Feed a starving heart!.......2007-05-24
I have been a Bebo fan since 'back in the day' when he used to do warm-up for Caedmon's Call in smallish college venues. This CD is outstanding. I find the outcome of the threefold strand of his lyrics, his music and his expression to be a rare triumph. In a day where most of contemporary Christian music is embarassingly anemic, predictable and repetitious, this CD is fresh and like water in the desert. It brings my spirit to LIFE.Bebo has obviously been through personal brokenness and this CD sounds to me like he channeled said struggle as a precious musical offering for fellow struggling sojourners.(Hmmmm...the broken alabaster jar of exquisite perfume comes to mind..)
Nice CD.......2007-05-14
This is the first time I listened to one of Bebo Norman's CD's--and I bought it for one song. So I have nothing to compare it with. I have njoyed this CD, but would probably not buy another.
Sorry, Bebo........2007-04-06
I own all of Bebo Norman's CDs, and I LOVE all of them, except for this one. I bought it and listened to it once, and I hated it. It does not sound like Bebo. This sounds like Steven Curtis Chapman or Michael W. Smith or any of the other mass produced Christian/pop music artists. On all of his previous albums, even though he changed his sound slightly, it was still generally very acoustic and Bebo-ish. This album sounds nothing like his previous music. I was disappointed.

This album pairs one of the greatest flamenco singers of today, cantaor Diego El Cigala, with one of Cuba's finest Afro-Cuban pianists, Bebo Valdes. With Valdes (father of the great Chucho Valdes) born in 1918, there's a 40-year age difference between the pianist and the singer, but they do a fine job crossing generations and oceans to discover the commonalities between Caribbean and the Iberian music, coming up with a romantic marriage of the two cultures using rumbas, guajira, sons and boleros. All the songs are classics out of the Latin music tradition, using just a handful of players in support. Valdes's fingers are delicate and prone to dramatic flourishes; Cigala's voice is pure flamenco in its hoarse intonation, cadence and emotional outpourings. The two masters make the union work by focusing on the drama of the love songs--"Veinte Años," "Inolvidable" and the title track are just three amazing examples--as fuel for some of the most exquisitely passionate music to come out in ages. --Tad Hendrickson
Album Description
Winners of three PREMIOS DE LA MUSICA AWARDS (Spanish Academy of Musical Arts & Sciences) Lágrimas Negras, a collection of old standards performed by Cuban jazz pianist Bebo Valdes and Spanish flamenco vocalist Diego el Cigala.
This was recorded at the suggestion of Hollywood Oscar® Award-winning director, Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque), which has become a phenomenon in Spain.
The result is a journey that discovers the essence of the Latino "love" song with connections to Cuba, Central and South America, and Spain.
Picked by New York Times critic Ben Rattcliff as "the best album of the year", Lágrimas Negras has had an impressive debut. The album has never been out of the top 30 since its release in Spain over nine months ago, achieving double Platinum sales status. It has won five Amigo Awards, one Premio Ondas, and three Premios de la Musica Awards (including Best Album).
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful synergy.......2007-06-08
A unique combination of beautiful jazz piano music played by acclaimed Cuban Bebo Valdés with the sensuous hoarse voice of young Gypsy singer El Cigala. First heard them at a friend's house and could not wait until I purchased the CD for myself and to give to friends. Great selection and variety of songs. The nearest to perfect symbiosis I have ever seen in a collaboration between jazz and flamenco.
Passionate!.......2007-05-15
This is the best CD I've bought in a while. We play it during painting class and it really gets the creative juices flowing...
A new interpretation for Latin Classics.......2007-03-09
Lagrimas Negras is a beautiful collection of Latin American beats combined with traditional Flamenco sounds. It is a perfect blend of music.
Lagrimas Negras.......2007-02-12
It is quite rare to find an album that can be enjoyed in its entirety, but this happens to be one of them. The genius arragangements of Bebo Valdes accompanied by the moving and impassioned vocals of Cegala are a match that could only be made through divine intervention.
A must have for your music library!.......2007-01-16
I love every single song on this album! Truly a masterpiece!

A previous independent release and two tours with Caedmon's Call have gained Bebo Norman a notable fan base. His first major-label release, Ten Thousand Days blends the reflection of a journal entry, the images of a poet, and the experiences of one who embraces all that comes his way. This upbeat folk album spotlights Norman's journey as he grapples with the important issues of life in order to live more faithfully. Throughout the project, Bebo's vocal and lyrical style carries an element of quietness that comes from his innermost self. The music has a spacious feel, but is not lacking in richness. Every tone, rhythm, and harmony has been tastefully chosen to create a purposeful sound. Its unobtrusive nature gently beckons the listener, making it a good fit in any setting. --Israel Button
Customer Reviews:
Rebirth of CD!!!.......2006-11-07
I have just recently been going through my old CD's and came across this jewel. I totally forgot how much raw and powerful emotions each song can produce. Each song gives an honest glimpse into the life and faith of Bebo Norman, and one that can match many others will the same views. You will not find another CD out there like it. It is one of my all time favorites and for very good reason. Don't let this CD go another day without it in your collection.
Breathtaking..........2003-08-12
I was introduced to Bebo Norman's music only a short time ago and the style and passion really do take your breath away. Here is a singer whose every words carve themselves onto your heart. They are unforgetable, they are genuine and they are stunning. His voice is soulful and gentle, with an incredible power that leaves you captivated. HIs words are poetic, and honest, and his music etches itself deep into your soul. You know, when you listen to him, that he really lives and breathes the love of the Lord God.
Quite stunning.
Another favorite artist.......2003-04-18
Bebo has my heart. A little bluesy, a little folk, a large measure of rock and pop, spin and enjoy! The emotion in his voice is incredible. The pictures he paints bring so much meaning to topics we've all grown too used to hearing. Another contemporary Christian artist worth hearing! He gets better with every album.
Beautiful, simple, accessible.......2003-03-16
I first heard Bebo Norman during last year's Third Day tour; I ordered two of his CDs the day after the concert. This recording remains my favorite, for its richness and its diversity and its marvelous "listenability".
Friends of mine who are fond of CCM often criticize Bebo for what they regard as the simplicity of his lyrics; compared to those of Jennifer Knapp or a Caedmon's Call, the words to a Bebo song are straightforward. But on clever and powerful songs like the sublime "The Hammer Holds", Bebo crafts a simple, tuneful, and deeply resonant meditation on God's sovereignty through the story of a nail that will, in due course, pierce the side of Christ. I saw many tears being wiped away when Bebo sang that live in Los Angeles a year ago; I have wiped away a few of my own while listening to that particular track.
As I went through my recent and painful divorce, this was the CD that brought me the most reassurance. In particular, the lovely "Where the Angels Sleep" and the humble "In Your Hands" brought me tremendous comfort. Perhaps these are not the most sophisticated songs I could have been listening to, but in a time of great spiritual and emotional pain we tend to seek out the familiar, the comforting, and the beautiful. This CD has become all three of these for me, and I will continue to treasure it.
I'm hooked..........2003-03-01
I picked this CD up after I saw Bebo opening for Third Day on their Come Together tour. I listened to the CD on the way home from the store and I just couldn't stop. Songs like "Walk Down This Mountain" and "Stand" are great inspirational songs, and songs like "A Page Is Turned" and "Deeper Still" draw on emotions that everyone can relate with. Probably one of my favorite songs of all time is "The Hammer Holds." The imagery and symbolism in this song matches that of any other songwriter ever in my opinion. I'd reccomend this CD to anyone with ears.

Worth it.......2007-04-23
The line "I'm so tired of it being about me!" in "Disappear" makes this CD well worth buying. That sentiment is very helpful for present-day American Christian culture.
Great Album.......2007-02-06
Bebo Norman displays great talent in writing and singing once again. He does not sink into the cliches Christian artists sometimes tend towards. Personal fave tracks: Falling and Borrow Mine. This album is a great reassurance in times of doubt in you faith.
Soothes the Spirit.......2006-11-13
I have heard Bebo's music on the radio but if you had asked me to name his songs, I would be at a loss. I checked this out of the library to give it a listen. I played it non-stop from the first time. I renewed it. Then I knew I had to add to my collection. I consider myself pretty picky when it comes to music and the album as a whole must minister to me. I can say this will not disappoint. Bebo is so honest, I find his voice resonate within me and touch the heart of God. It is more worshipful than praise oriented. I can't just pick one song to esteem higher than another. I would consider this a worthy gift to someone, who loves Worshipping the Lord -but they can't have my copy ; )
Those who don't think this is worthwhile may just prefer another style but I think he is definitely going to recognized as one of the greats of the decade. Why are you reading this? Go now and buy it!
Enjoy!
Great Album.......2006-11-03
I love this album... I listen to contemporary Christian and Easy Listening all day at work, added this to my collection. This is beautiful music, uplifting and inspirational. Great purchase!
Bebo, Bebo, Bebo...........2006-02-16
This review pains me. I am a huge fan of Bebo. I have given the first three albums five out of five... now I must give a three, really its more of a three and half. Bebo Norman is a great talent. I cannot think of a voice that I enjoy better than Bebo's. With that said this album is not his best... in fact its his worst. Even his independet release Fabric of Verse is much better. Some of the songs lyrics just don't run smoothly enough. I guess they kind of feel forced. Still one of the best Bebo songs is on this album Try. The title track is fantastic. So simply buy the other Bebo albums before this one... but buy it if your a huge Bebo fan because you'll like it anyway.

Bebo Norman, one of Christian music's brightest songwriting talents, shows no signs of slowing down with Myself When I Am Real. Norman once again teams with writing partner-producer Ed Cash for another folk-tinged collection of essays on love, loss, and the need for spiritual companionship. Certainly, the opening "Our Mystery," "Falling Down," and "Everything" add melodic electricity to the release, but more of Myself lies in the quieter, ambient tracks like "Beautiful You," "Just to Look at You," and the transcendent "Great Light of the World." Not to be overlooked is Norman's superb "Long Way Home," a strongly moving ode to commitment in a sometimes stormy yet loving relationship. While the trend toward softer pieces is more in line with Norman's Ten Thousand Days debut, he's clearly maturing in songwriting efficiency and lyrical deftness, while examining matters of heart and soul. There's little doubt that Myself will garner good sales, yet Norman's talent deserves a larger audience. --Michael Lyttle

Another great CD.......2005-01-12
This is an another awesome CD from Bebo. He is on a roll! I love his other CDs too. The lyrics are pretty deep and filled with emotion. I can really praise the Lord to Bebo's music.
best of bebo.......2004-06-23
this is one of the top 100 cds in my book. that is a big deal too. bebo is an amazing vocalist and he has lyrics that will always keep you interested or singing right along.
a "real" review.......2003-09-29
I loved this CD. I love all the songs, whether they relate to God or to love/life. Bebo has a wonderful voice and is a rare talent. These songs have yes, spiritual depth, but I find that the reason I keep putting it in my CD player is that I can relate to the songs, and I just love to sing along! Bebo's hit the nail on the head yet another time! In other words, Bebo's "Myself when I am Real" is a great buy.
Not like the 1st two.......2003-05-01
The 1st two albums by Bebo Norman were gems. Ever since he has linked up with Ed Cash - it is like muzak to me. No deep strings and pulls on the heart strings. I am a great fan of the 1st two albums - "Ten Thousand Days" and "Fabric of Verse."

A fortunate meeting between two great musicians!.......2007-02-18
After the well known success of Buena vista Social Club, the world realized there were many roads to explore around the significance of new airs of freshness that received the Latin music.
And in this state of things Bebo Valdes 'presence was even embossed by Fernando Trueba in "Calle 54" ( as a matter of fact, Truba produced the last album of Bebo). This album is a plesant compilation of universal themes that have as common denominator the love in every single track, seen by several composers around the world. And that cosmopolitism enriches beyond measure and notably the huge lyric legacy of it. From Ernesto Lecuona? s Noche de luna to Gershwin's Someone to watch over me and from Billie Evans' Waltz for Debbie to Astor Piazolla' s Adios Nonino, the wide range of distilled emotions, livings and memories is carved in relief by this formidable team of sensitive musicians.
We Could Make Such Beautiful Music Together.......2006-08-19
it is a disk beautiful, it is one of the best interpretations of Bebo Valdes
Warming and just music, pure joy of music.......2005-03-06

Great Cuban Music.......2006-05-16
this album was released in 1959, during the time when Castro was first coming to power in Cuba. It is great Cuban Orchestrated music, which gives you a flavor of what it must have sounded to sit in a nightclub in Havana when Cuba was a tourist mecca. Good music stands the test of time, and this still sounds great.

Even though he has lived in Sweden for four decades, Bebo Valdés's playing is so poignantly Cuban that you can practically smell the cigar tobacco. Some will remember Valdes as a standout on the soundtrack for Calle 54 or from his Blue Note album El Arte del Sabor from 2001. Here, on Recuerdos de Habana, a double-disc set first released as an import in 1999, he plays with the same fire as on the above two albums. The pianist often goes it alone or is joined by his young son Rickard on timbales, while occasionally they are joined by other percussionists or bass. Regardless of the setting, Valdés's playing sparkles as he rolls from bolero to mambo to guajira with the same ferocious yet romantic piano style that he taught his son Chucho. Along with 28 songs, fans also get a fascinating interview and music lesson in English with the pianist. As good a self-portrait as one could hope for, Recuerdos is required listening for Cuban jazz fans. --Tad Hendrickson
