5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2007-05-23

I've always loved her music but I had never purchased any of her CD's. This CD had all of my favorites on it and some songs I hadn't heard. I loved every song. If you're looking for a comprehensive CD with "Best of" Bonnie music, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Bonnie Raitt... what a great singer!.......2007-03-21

Great Singer.. great songs.. terrific musician! What else is there to say?!

5 out of 5 stars Best of Bonnie Raitt.......2007-01-06

The title says it all...upbeat blues...something to make you feel good.

5 out of 5 stars Best Of Bonnie Rait.......2006-11-06

I received my order in a timely manner and it is just what I wanted all the great songs!! Thank you! LB

5 out of 5 stars This is only the "best" since 1989.......2006-09-09

As a long-time lover of Bonnie Raitt, I have no complaints about this "best" package, except a note to those Bonnie "newbies". This collection is a good sampling of her work since she switched to Capital Records in 1989 (although "Come to Me" is a glaring omission). But there is a TON of more great music PRE-1989. Try the "Bonnie Raitt Collection", which is all pre-1989, or try some of the orignal CD's, such as "Sweet Forgiveness".

It doesn't get any better than Bonnie Raitt - pre- or post-1989, but those of you who love this album should check out the earlier work as well.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bonnie's most successful recordings.......2005-05-24

During the seventies and eighties, Bonnie recorded many fine albums for Warner, building up a significant fan base without really hitting the big time. Eventually, Warner lost interest and Bonnie's contract was not renewed. She switched to Capitol in 1989 and recorded the album Nick of time, which won plenty of awards and sold better than any of her Warner albums.

This compilation covers Bonnie's music on Capitol from 1989 to 2003. Overall, the music is slicker than Bonnie's Warner recordings - not so much as to put off long-standing fans but enough to attract a lot of new fans. Thus, there is more pop and rock but less blues in these recordings, while there is little or no folk that was so significant in some of Bonnie's seventies albums. However, there are other influences, most notably the final track (Hear me Lord), a Zimbabwean song that retains some of its African flavor.

The album opens with three tracks from Nick of time, which are followed by three from Luck of the draw, three from Longing in their hearts, three from the live album Road tested, two from Fundamental and four from Silver lining. Among the highlights are Thing called love, Something to talk about, I can't make you love me, Rock steady (with Bryan Adams) and the aforementioned Hear me Lord.

This is a truly magnificent collection of Bonnie's music. I still favor her Warner recordings, for which there is also a compilation (Bonnie Raitt Collection). Buy both if you can afford to.

5 out of 5 stars A Fine, Fine Performer.......2004-05-22

Having seen Emory Joseph perform live recently, and having already kicked myself for not buying an autographed copy on the spot, I'm now making up for my mistake. This is a fine, fine performer with songs that have texture, character and humanity. A welcome addition to anyone's musical shelf. Buy it, and then go see him live!

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this album!.......2003-02-25

Buy this album. You won't be sorry. It's got a song for every mood, and the lyrics are meaningful and intelligent. Emory's voice is smooth but distinctive.

5 out of 5 stars Try It, You'll Like It!.......2003-02-24

Emory Joseph has cooked up an amazing CD. With help of some excellent layered backup from T-Bone Wolk, Kenny Aronoff and some others I can't recall.
My favorite cut is 'The Same', a moody ballad, but the rest of the CD comes in a close second. Earthy lyrics mixed with folksy, bluesy (is that a word?)acoustic backup, all telling a story that you'll want to hear.
I really like everything about this collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars Peep_the_Sot liqueurs it up!.......2003-02-23

The influences are obvious, but one need not mentionthem since EJ sets himself apart quite distinctly! Chuffing right off the top is 'Carolina Princess'giving us an excursion that shouldn't be denied if oneknows a thing or two about fun! While the song leavesone hip-shaking, try adding a shuffle while pouringinto 'Rhum and Coffee'. Have we the next best thing to Professor Longhair andRockin' Sidney? These two rib-sticking numbers areundeniable standouts and great openers one of whichfeatures Levon Helm and quite suitably so. A compositional shift in 'The Same' offers anexquisite melody that very much compliments EJ's voicewhich manages to take on every tale he tells withconviction. This is one pretty song! Initially not crazy about 'Trinkets' and then itmounts and builds and grows and so not a loser in thelot yet! Never one to linger with songs about pain but 'Earlyin the Morning' allows the narrator to get you throughthe night! Not sure if 'Daddy John' is autobiographical, but thecompelling organ and instrumental diversity tells meit is. Back on the rails to 'Be Home Baby' anothertoe-tapping mover and you can feel the hug! Greatguitar pickin'! And yet another pitch in voice! Can you say 'Work toDo'? ... This band cooks! 'Sweet William' is simply another wonderfully melodicstory that showcases Emory's ability to capture hisaudience and wonder what's next which leads us to myfavourite of the lot, but not before giving us a bitof quackery which somehow fits right in amidst thisvery novel release. 'Family Dog' completes this winning mix and againfeatures Levon Helm. If Mr. Emory has any more bonesburied it's best he start digging them up! Compulsive listening and a great addition to any musical library!

4 out of 5 stars Must-own debut album!.......2003-02-20

From the day my mailman delivered my copy of L&S, it has been in my CD changer. "Carolina Princess", "The Same", "Rhum and Coffee" among my favorites, this album has kept me company for many miles on the 405. Hopefully, they will post some sound snips so you can see for yourself what a varied piece of work this album is. Emory has put together a complete package. The album rocks, it slows down in all the right places, and it even has a mysterious "hidden" track that will surely offend all the right people. I've recommended this album without hesitation to anyone who will listen to me. The only bad part about listening to this album so much is that it makes me want Emory's second album immediately! I certainly hope he gets back in the studio soon...

        Album Description

A debut recording is an exciting opportunity for music lovers—the chance to discover a talent for the first time. Teraesa Vinson's first recording effort, Opportunity Please Knock, offers a glimpse of a promising future. The collection's combination of well-loved choices from the Great American Songbook, along with a dash of lesser-known tunes and beautiful rendition of a pop standard, will give new audiences a treat.

Recorded April 4, 5, and May 24, 2004 at Eastside Sound in New York City, this debut album captures the St. Louis native's lush, vintage voice in tandem with exceptional bandmates. Ron Blake (saxophone), Tom Dempsey (guitar), Carlton Holmes (piano), Dion Parson (drums), and Nicki Parrott (bass), all first class talents and standards on the New York jazz scene, offer a fertile and supportive environment for Vinson's first foray into the recording experience.

Opportunity Please Knock introduces Vinson's knack for song selection, featuring tunes that showcase her velvet voice and arrangements that combine her respect of jazz tradition with the desire to try something new. An example is her version of "The Way You Look Tonight"—classically done as a simple guitar duet, while also injecting newness by treating it as a waltz. A certain standout is her moving rendition of "I Can't Make You Love Me," a pop standard made famous by Bonnie Raitt in the 1990's. The title track—Oscar Brown Jr.'s commentary on the civil rights struggle—is both true to the original and injected with Vinson's own personal touch.

Compared at times to Lorez Alexander or an early Helen Humes, Vinson seemed unsure of who she most closely resembles. "People say I have a `vintage-sounding' voice, but I don't think I sound like anyone in particular. I think that as a musician you look for guidance and inspiration from great musicians, but along the way you find your own voice. I'm excited that through this recording many people will be able to meet me for the first time."
