A few gems, but not worth the price of an entire CD.......2000-03-01
Cracker's version of "White Riot," Indigo Girls' version of "Clampdown," and (in the love it or hate it category) Moby's version of "Straight to Hell." These 3 cuts actually bring something new to these great songs (okay, Ice Cube's take on "Should I Stay or Should I Go" brings something new, but nothing desirable). Silverchair's rendition of "London's Burning" is disappointingly uninspired. Stick it to the establishment and copy the three tracks mentioned to another format for repeated listening, and frisbee the rest.
Mixed, but over all pleasing, bag.......1999-12-21
It takes a lot to ruin a Clash song. I frequently skip the NO DOUBT contribution, and the "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" horrorshow. ((shudder)) The Indigo Girls turned CLAMPDOWN into something you'd hear at a folk rock Hootinanie - shockingly, I dig it. Could have done without THIRD EYE BLIND, and SILVERCHAIR. "Clash City Rockers" is blistering - love it! "White Riot" is hysterical - adding a layer of satirical racist irony. It is impossible to ruin LOST IN THE SUPERMARKET. I go back and forth on STRAIGHT TO HELL.
Decent, save one track........1999-10-25
All in all, a decent CD. However, MxPx makes it worth buying the import. It is just one song, but that one song makes all the difference. WHY OH WHY was this song not on the US version? Janie Jones...yeah.
Excellent, with a few exceptions........1999-06-12
As a Clash fan, I enjoyed the great covers by most of these bands, many of which are bands I don't normally care for. The extra track by MxPx made up for a few tracks that were not so good, even though " Janie Jones " clocks in at just under 2 minutes. Heather Nova unfortunately butchers the lyrics on " Straight to Hell, " changing " British jig & reel " to " British reel, " and " speaking King's English in quotations " to " speaking in quotations. " Two tracks made me laugh. I think with Cracker's countryish " White Riot " the humor was intentional, but Ice Cube/Mack 10 made me laugh to think that a Clash song could be turned into a trashy rap. It is funny, yet disturbing that this made the CD. Why no Pogues or Shane McGowan track ? Everyone knows Shane is a great fan of the Clash. There were even rumors that Joe Strummer might replace him when he left the Pogues. A Shane track would have made the CD even more worthy of its import price. Still, it is a decent tribute album with ( mostly ) good covers.

Customer Reviews:
10 of 12 songs are great for CLASH fans.......2005-11-11
I'm not sure what I was thinkin' when I first heard this cd. I dismissed it for some reason thinking it was not that strong or particularly enjoyable. Wot a nut. I broke it out again, though, I gotta admit, after immersing myself in CLASH books, Passion is a Fashion and Complete Clash and the Penny photo book and the Bob G. photo book and the recent Uncut/NME and Mojo Classic Clash magazine issues, I've been revitalized in my enjoyment of the CLASH. I thought the music was great back in the day (I'm 51 in 2005)and it has stood the test of time well. Turns out there's more strong tribute CD's of the CLASH than I realized. To me, a test of whether I'm digging a record, particularly a cover one, is whether I bust out in singing along, loudly. Sure enough, most of the songs here must make for a funny sight when people may see me drivin' by cuz I virtually listen to all my tunes while driving as a compromise to my less musically hard edged family.
This is, no question, another CLASH cover CD that's got the goods. The 2 weakest songs are still not bad. Out of 12 songs I'm turnin' it up for 10 of them. Police & Thieves is incredible instrumentally. Very powerful beats, actually exceeding the intensity of the original. However, once the vocals begin it's that of a gal who sounds like the RAINCOATS/SLITS/KLEENEX style of high female punk vocals that don't particularly match the rich intrumentation. It's not bad if you like those gal bands. Still, I'd love to hear it with no vocals or maybe some stronger vocal presence. Mostly, the songs are true to the punk sound and, as with most of these CLASH cover CD's, sound like they feel it's an honor to be doing these songs. If yer a CLASH fan, feel no hesitation in getting this CD, particularly at its great inexpensive price. Trust me, you'll be glad. ps, if you like Burning London, the big names CLASH tribute CD then, uh, I guess you don't like punk rock cuz that thing's the opposite of punk, ok, not quite BARRY MANILOW or NEIL DIAMOND or LOVERBOY, but, still, a sad attempt at a cover of a classic punk band.

Not bad but not blazing.......2005-11-11
This is mostly one band backing several different singers for the various songs. The singers come from CHELSEA, The VIBRATORS, The ALARM, The BUSINESS, The BOYS, 999, PETER And The TEST TUBE BABIES and the UK SUBS. This must have come out about the late 90's or early 2000's based on pictures of the singers. The songs are functionally adequeate but not sparkling with the exception of the Guns of Brixton which has the instruments and vocals and production all done by RTZ GLOBAL. Holy smokes! that's a great cover. Makes me wanna turn it up and enjoy it as much as any original CLASH song. The rest of 'em aren't horrid, just, well, a bit lacking. Not bad really. It is punk rock, not hardcore. chrisbct@hotmail.com

Customer Reviews:
One of my two favorite Clash tribute cds........2005-10-27
I've purchased 5 Clash tribute cds and this is a high quality one. Most of the songs are punchy, strong, enjoyable generally along the same musical lines of the Clash. I get the feeling the bands did these covers with a passion for the Clash. It shows. I rarely, if ever, like beat, hip hop type music. Yet there's two such covers on here and they're very well done with a strong beat right out of the original version that just rings true. A very enjoyable cover. Not 5 stars only because there's 1 or 2 songs that are less then fully satisfying with some slight wimp factor in them but I was definitely pleasantly suprised to hear so many high quality punk (not hardcore) covers here. Well worth it, particularly at under $6. chrisbct@hotmail.com
Clash Tribute.......2000-02-10
Some interesting versions, the only real dissappointment was on "Should I Stay or Should I go" This song should have never been performed by a rapper.

Customer Reviews:
Possibly the best tribute cd I've ever heard........2005-10-27
I'm a big fan of a high quality tribute cd. When it's done well it's like an opportunity to hear my favotire songs by my favorite bands done in a different way. As the years pass, in this case 20, 25 of them, I like to hear a different well done version such as the original band doing live versions. Cover songs give bands a chance to rework the original song, often presenting it more differently than the orignal band ever did say from outtakes or live versions. Not all tribute cds are high quality. In fact, Burning London is horrid. Unlistenable. Well intended but, ugh, virtually every song misses the mark. On this cd so many of the bands successfully cover their Clash song that I've listened to this cd as often as any Clash cd I've listened to over the years (or tapes or lps before cds). I can't think of a clinker on this one, though there is one that's very hip hop like and I only like the opening part of the song and there's one hardcore punk version that's pretty disappointing. Otherwise, if you want well done punk (not hardcore) covers of the Clash this is the tribute cd to get. chrisbct@hotmail.com
The Clash Are Alive And Well!.......1999-12-21
Who knew 1999 was going to be the year of The Clash? Faves include the opening DEATH OR GLORY, and LOST IN THE SUPERMARKET. Much better than the higher profile BURNING LONDON!
way better than burning london.......1999-07-12
i'm a huge clash fan and i've not even heard much of this but i can tell you alot of these bands,if not all of them respect the clash in some way(unlike bands like no doubt, ice cube, silverchair and others on the burning london tribute)only one song i know of on here can be found elsewhere(dropkicks cover of guns of brixton is on a 7"of theirs)fang also appears on antoher clash tribute out on july 13th.now if only joe, mick, paul and topper would just give us the ultimate tribute and reform.oh well!!go buy this and the one soon to get released(not burning london-rancid is the only band on there that is true clash fans and they dopn't ruin the song either)and get joe's album when it comes out in the fall on epitaph!!!!-jason h.
