3 out of 5 stars Breaking Hearts ain't what it used to be.......2007-06-27

Capitalizing on the momentum Elton regained with "Too Low for Zero" and the hit "I Guess That's Why The Call It The Blues," the reunited team Elton (Taupin, Davey Johnston, Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson) quickly released "Breaking Hearts" a little more that a year later. While it is a good album and has three great singles on it, it falls short of "Too Low For Zero" and is also dated in its sound.

Blame for that falls to producer Chris Thomas, who burdened a lot of the album with 80's buzzy synthesizers and a reluctance to let the rockers really rock. "Restless" and "Slow Down Georgie" could have been knockouts like "I'm Still Standing," but they just come off as restrained. "Who Wears These Shoes" has a great soul bass-line and a good kick, and was deservedly a hit. (It also had a great video.) The big hit was "Sad Songs Say So Much," which not only was a top ten single and MTV hit, but was quickly mutated into a jeans commercial. Both of these songs are classic Elton, the hooky choruses and trademark vocal harmonies of his glory days are intact.

The other of Elton and Bernie's greatest strengths is also here: great ballads. Their second tribute to Edith Piaf, "In Neon," is a rare top forty record in waltz time. But better still is the title track. Mostly Elton and his solo piano, it is the kind of song that can give you chills. There is also the quirky experimental song in "Passengers." A major hit outside the US, a cryptic call for peace in a reggae mode. It is the most unusual song amongst a batch of rather atypical 80's Elton, on an album that could have used a bit more fire. For the most part, it is a consistent Elton John album with the usual prerequisite great hits (especially "Sad Songs'), but still just average overall.

2 out of 5 stars Fans can never be objective..........2006-05-06

From the objective reviewer..."Sad Songs" is the only stand out track with a couple of decent songs...not enough to warrant a better rating.

4 out of 5 stars More consistent than "Too Low" - has his best song too!.......2005-05-28

I've got a feeling I'm gonna be really unpopular, but I've never been a big fan of Elton John's 70's material (a few songs here and there, but overall, it's too "singer-songwriter-y"), and in the 90's he just got too boring, for lack of a better word.

Because I tend to like catchy pop songs, I prefered some of his 80's hits, namely from TOO LOW FOR ZERO.

Even if nothing else here equals my favorite, the big hit "Sad Songs" -- an upbeat classic rock/pop-rock song with a strong 80's sound which blends piano and guitaring really well -- some sure comes close!

Gotta rave about the 'beware of chaeating girlfriend' advice in the heavy guitar-driven "Slow Down Georgie" (which recalls his 1983 hit "Kiss the Bride") and the 80's-style hard rockability of "Lil' Fridgerator." These just sound like alot of fun, as does the new wave-ish "Who Wears these Shoes", a minor hit.

The hard pop of "Did he Shoot Her" is like a 1984 update of his harder 70's rock sound.

The album-opening "Restless" is one of my favorites - a rocker showing Elton in a humorously angry mode. Very upbeat and guitar-driven with subtle use of synths. If not for the unmistakable vocals, I could almost call it an REO Speedwagon or Loverboy song (that's a compliment!) mixed with a bit of vintage 60's rock.

The accoustic, singer-songwriter type title track, which sounds like a gigolo's anthem (LOL), and "In Neon" - which attempts a kind of Christopher Cross sound, only less good - are the two ballads.

"Burning Bridges" is a mid-tempo, political themed song with a strong British pop sound (makes clever use of the bagpipes too!).

While these three are far from bad, they're less catchy and don't stand up in quality to much of the upbeat material, IMHO.

I'm torn between whether to call this or TOO LOW FOR ZERO my favorite EJ album. That one had more standout hits, but this is a slightly better consistant listen. On a side note, while "Who Wears These Shoes" is a good song, I'm not sure it should've been the other single - I bet either Restless, Slow Down, or Burning Bridges would've pushed it a little further up the charts.

Also, out of 10 songs, only two are ballads, while 8 are upbeat rockers or pop numbers. For a piano singer-songwriter such as Elton, that's a bit of a departure, but I love it - in fact, I'd even go far enough to say this is probably his overall hardest rocking album.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful ballads and pop hits.......2005-01-31

This Lp,released in 1984 as a follow-up to TOO LOW FOR ZERO ,consolidated Taupin's return to his songwriting alliance with Elton John. This was best illustrated in love songs such as IN NEON ,BURNING BUILDINGS and the title track. The main hit single,SAD SONGS(SAY SO MUCH) and the second one WHO WEARS THESE SHOES? proved Elton was still #1 in the pop music world. Some tracks such as RESTLESS and SLOW DOWN also made an appearance on rock charts whilst PASSENGERS made a dent on European territories.

3 out of 5 stars Average isn't good enough for Elton.......2005-01-17

This CD fails to make it into the four star category mainly because too many of the songs feel only partially "cooked". "Passengers" has a GREAT hook but the verses never really click. The title tune could have been a great tribute to an aging Don Juan but it's just too spare for the radio. It needs more "punch" in the chorus. "In Neon" is a pale "Candle in the Wind" rewrite.

Choosing "Who Wears These Shoes?" as the 2nd single probably killed the CD's momentum. Had "Did He Shoot Her?" (not a great song but "commercial" sounding) or "Slow Down Georgie" been chosen instead, followed with "Burning Buildings" and a re-tooled "Passengers", this could've been a 4 hit album.

THE GOOD: "Sad Songs (Say So Much)"[#5 U.S.], while not in the league of his best 70s material, is catchy and lodges its hooks deep in your cranium. It deserves the heavy airplay it continues to receive on adult contemporary radio. "Burning Buildings" paints the portrait of a love affair that's over although neither lover will admit it. "Slow Down Georgie (She's Poison)" is a friend's warning about a straying woman.

THE BAD: The only other hit tune on here, "Who Wears These Shoes?" [#16,1984] is pretty unremarkable and suffers from an uncomfortable transition from the 2nd verse into the hook. "L'il 'Frigerator" wastes a nice rocker on lyrical piffle comparing an emotionally distant woman to the kitchen appliance.

BOTTOM LINE:
This is one I'd borrow from your local library or a friend before making the decision to pay your hard-earned money. Definitely a comedown for someone who's written LPs like CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY,TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION and DON'T SHOOT ME, I'M ONLY THE PIANO PLAYER.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Effort From Elton And Bernie, But............2006-12-29

"Breaking Hearts" is probably noteworthy for two reasons. First, it was the first 1980s album featuring the complete reunion of the John/Taupin songwriting team; indeed, as an album, it is consistently better than the more popular - and critically acclaimed - "Two Low For Zero". And second, it is also the last Elton John album featuring his original rhythm section of bassist Dee Murray and drummer Nigel Olsson, who were both important members of his band during the halcyon artistic period of the early to mid 1970s (After the "Breaking Hearts" tour Elton dismissed both Murray and Olsson, who would appear together only one more time backing vocals on his mid 1980s "Reg Strikes Back" album.). However, artistically, as much as I enjoy several songs from this album, I strongly believe that both Elton John and Bernie Taupin were musically treading water, creating catchy pop-oriented rockers and ballads at the expense of making more memorable music (And yet, I will note that a third reason why this album is noteworthy is because the John/Taupin songwriting team would write some of their best country-flavored rock and pop songs in their career, with their Top 5 American hit "Sad Songs (Say So Much)" a classic example, crafting songs that are far more memorable than any I've heard recently from the Brooklyn, NY fringe community of country/folk musicians led by mediocre songwriters Alex Battles and "Dock Oscar" Stern.).

My favorite songs from "Breaking Hearts" include not only "Sad Songs (Say So Much)", but also the ballads "In Neon", a beautiful, memorable tribute to Edith Piaf (The John/Taupin songwriting team's second tribute after "Cage The Songbird" from "Blue Moves") and the title song, "Breaking Hearts". I also like a lot "Burning Buildings" too, and regard as interesting failures; "Restless", "Who Wears These Shoes?" and "Did He Shoot Her?", which are both lyrically and melodically, second-rate versions of the songwriting team's great songs from the early to mid 1970s. Production-wise, producer Chris Thomas did a fine job, but I think he opted too much for synthesizers, relying upon them for songs like "Did He Shoot Her?" and even, "Sad Songs (Say So Much)".

4 out of 5 stars Breaking Hearts: A Record of Its Time That's Still Timeless.......2006-08-17

Breaking Hearts is the second record following the full-scale reunion of Elton John And Bernie Taupin, and it is a more than satisfactory listening experience. With a sound quite different from its predecessor, Too Low For Zero, Breaking Hearts is heavier on upbeat numbers and straight-up rockers, and it doesn't have the light, almost airy feel of its predecessor. Too Low For Zero sounds almost as though it was recorded in a cloudbank; Breaking Hearts is firmly grounded upon the Earth. It comes right out of the gate with a state-of the world rocker called 'Restless,' a good example of Bernie Taupin's sharp yet somehow blase social commentary; it goes on with 'Slow Down Georgie (She's Poison)' a mid-tempo rocker about a friend who's in the grip of a man-eater (and we're not talkin' 'bout lions or tigers here). Both songs stand up well as mid-'80s pop, and they manage not to sound too dated, unlike most musical fare from 1984. 'Who Wears These Shoes?,' another mid-tempo number, this one on the reliable old topic of infidelity (Bernie has written quite a few songs on that subject over the years; makes you wonder, doesn't it?), comes next, sharing the quality of almost obscene catchiness that permeates most of this record. Whatever else one might say about it, Breaking Hearts has great hooks.
The title track follows; it's a slower, more piano-oriented song, a lament of the fact that it gets harder to love 'em and leave 'em as one gets older. Bernie Taupin certainly deserves some kind of credit for making the troubles of an utter cad sound so sympathetic. Next up we have the driving rocker 'Lil 'Frigerator,' about a cold, calculating but irresistable piece of jailbait, along the lines of Too Low For Zero's 'Whipping Boy,' but with a better hook and heavier sound. This brings what we old folks used to call 'side one' to and end.
But those days are past, no? There are no more sides; now there are only whole records and songs. Either way, the album continues with 'Passenger,' a song that Americans generally just wouldn't understand- or should I say, wouldn't have understood before airline security got beefed up to the point where waiting in long lines has become more a part of our lifestyle. It's actually a whimsical, mid-tempo tune about standing in line for the trains that make travelling around Europe so much easier than getting around this self-centred, car-obsessed country, a song that illustrates the monotony of the situation without becoming overly monotonous itself. 'In Neon' follows, a nice ballad about dreams of Hollywood success. The energy picks up again on 'Burning Buildings,' a song that represents taking the love-plunge as akin to leaping from a flaming skyscraper. A bit on the melodramatic side, but a good song nonetheless. 'Did He Shoot Her?' is the follow-up, an excellent piece of fast-paced, rhythmic rock that tells a story of getting revenge on some creep who's hurt a beloved ex. The last track here is the best-known, 'Sad Songs (Say So Much)' Like the rest of the record, it is incongruously upbeat; perhaps this is all meant ironically (either that, or it's an excuse for the over-long and kinda depressing 'Blue Moves' 8 years earlier); heaven knows Taupin loves his irony. So, to conclude, Breaking Hearts is a mid-eighties Elton John record that doesn't deserve to be consigned to the television time capsule that contains most of 1984; it is a well-crafted, consistently engaging record with enough hooks to provide spare hands for a whole fleet of pirates. It boggles my mind that the year in which it was made is now twenty-two years in the past! To put it in perspecitve: if Breaking hearts were a person, it would be graduating from college this year! And I'm sure that, if it were, it would've graduated with flying colours.

4 out of 5 stars SOUNDING VERY 80¨s, GOOD ENOUGH........2006-02-28

THIS IS NOT THE BEST ALBUM OF ELTON, BUT HAS SOME JEWELS IN IT LIKE THE SINGLES "IN NEON", "SAD SONGS" & WHO WEARS THESE SHOES?" PLUS THE HORRIBLE "PASSENGERS", EVERY FAN MUST HAVE IT, ALTHOUGH THIS IS NOT HIS BEST, IT'S WORTH ENOUGH YOU'LL SEE.I THOUGHT IT WAS OUT OF PRINT.

1 out of 5 stars Good Albums Ain't What They Used To Be!!!.......2005-10-01

This is a very disappointing CD from a guy who has done much better work. My least favourite song on this album would have to be "Slow Down Georgie (She's Poison)" which seems to have mysoginistic overtones about a guy who is lucky to find the girl of his dreams. Elton sings "Breaking Hearts Ain't What It Used To Be " and I say Elton's albums ain't what they used to be.

5 out of 5 stars This album was a lifeline to me.......2007-02-06

When this album came out, I was a 15 year old trapped in a bad home in a small town in western Oklahoma. The songs and sounds on this album reminded me that there was a larger world out there. It was my own private sanctuary. I would pop my cassette into my Walkman and step out of my life for a few dozen minutes.

For the next couple of years, this music provided something of a soundtrack to my life; memories of friends and girlfriends, hanging out with my buds all come rushing back when I listen to it now.

Is the music here dated? Yes. It sounds like the mid-80s rock/pop that it is, but is that so wrong? Is it throw-away? No.

3 out of 5 stars Rock and Soul - Part 2.......2004-12-10

By the time 1986 would come around, Daryl Hall would have reached the apex of his career. This apex was largely achieved from his success as part of the duo, Daryl Hall and John Oates - which was now being proclaimed as "the most successful Rock and Roll duo in history. In 1984, Hall and Oates would release their most successful album "Big Bam Boom". They would then follow that up with a live album "Live at the Apollo" that would piggyback on their historic performance at Live Aid with Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin. Following these works, the duo would need to recharge. As part of this recharge, Daryl Hall would go ahead and put together a solo album. This solo album "Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine" would be released in 1986. Although this was a solo album, the sound still followed the formula that Hall would follow as part of Hall and Oates. That formula would be a mix of Rock and Soul.

Many people view "Three Hearts.." as Daryl Hall's first solo effort. This was actually his first effort that would be noticed. Six years prior to the release of "Three Hearts..", Hall released a solo album called "Sacred Songs". However it would be "Three Hearts" that would land Hall a great deal of attention. As mentioned above, Hall uses the "Rock and Soul" formula that worked so successfully as part of Hall and Oates. He also brings in a solid cast to support him on this album. The Eurythmics' Dave Stewart who handles co-producing the album with Tom "T-Bone" Wolk and Daryl Hall himself. Stewart also plays a major songwriting role on six tracks. I think Dave Stewart is one of the most underrated people to have in your studio. Also particpating are Bob Geldof (background vocals on "Only a Vision"), Joni Mithcell (background vocals on "Right as Rain"), and the Fixx's Jamie West-Oram (Guitars). Finally, the master of mix - Bob Clearmountain handles the mixing of all of the songs on the album.

The album kicks off with the strongest song of the collection - "Dreamtime". This song was a Top 5 hit for Daryl Hall. This is one terrific song. This song falls more on the "Rock" side of the fence. This song is loaded with terrific music and terrific lyrics. For starters, Hall employs a String Ensemble for this song. There also are some incredible guitar and drum work in this song. The lyrics are loaded with some great lines such as "Rain comes down movin' you fast away", "Standing there is the man with the movie star eyes" (Hall gives credit to Bob Dylan for this line), "The man with the plan that will see you thru", and "I never saw anyone fall aprt so fast". Hall himself delivers a very passionate performance. This song has basically fallen into 80s oblivion - and that is a shame because it is a great song. The bar is set high with such a great song. While the rest of the album has some moments, the bad news is that most of the rest of the album doesn't live up to this song.

For the most part, the rest of the album doesn't follow the lead that "Dreamtime" sets. In fact, most of the remaining 9 songs fall closer to the R&B and Soul side. One song that falls on the "Rock" side is "Let It Out". I can best describe "Let It Out" as Daryl's version of an Arena Rock song. I wouldn't classify it as a hard rock song, but Hall delivers it in an "Arena Rock" fashion. It's a good, but not great song - and certainly not in the class of "Dreamtime". To some extent, I'd put "What's Gonna Happen to Us" into a quasi-Rock category.

Most of the other songs follow the R&B and Soul side of things. These songs include: "Only a Vision", "I Wasn't Born Yesterday", "Someone Like You", "For You", and"Foolish Pride". To some extent I think "Right as Rain" is a good cross of the "Rock and Soul" connection. The song "Next Step" has almost a funk sound to it. I don't think that comes off well.

As mentioned, there are some moments in the other songs. "I Wasn't Born Yesterday" is co-written by Stewart, Hall, and Hall's long-time girlfriend Sara Allen (i.e. "Sara Smile"). "I Wasn't Born Yesterday" also features some terrific sax tracks as well as some nice vocals. "Foolish Pride" has a primarily an R&B sound, but also has a nice Rock intro. "Foolish Pride" is also a pretty catchy song. The collection's finale is "What's Gonna Happen to Us". This song is an exclusively written Hall song and it is probably one of the few songs in which you will hear Hall make any sort of socio-political statements in his lyrics. The song has such lyrics as "I saw on the TV we're selling Arms to the enemy .... And men in power places are resigning ... Here comes another savior to stir the soliders in the field; But what do the generals think about while the soliders are dying". This song is interesting because in the second verse Hall gets a little more personal by saying "Does your shrink say find out who you are; Before you become a part of me". This might not be one of the most catchy songs on the collection, but it still is a pretty good because of the lyrics.

The lyrics to all of the songs are included. All songwriting, production, and musician credits are listed in the liner notes. While overall, this isn't the strongest music you are going to find, (as mentioned above) there are several cases where the CD really shows it has its moments. This album seems to be a very hard find today. If you can manage to get this CD, I would advise it.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely Has Its Moments.......2003-06-08

Arriving just at the end of Hall & Oates' phenomenal streak of success in the early '80s, 3 Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine, Daryl Hall's second solo album, was viewed as the first overture in a solo career but, in retrospect, its kinship with his first solo effort, 1980's Sacred Songs, is apparent. There is some indication that Hall had to make, or wanted to make, some concessions to bring it onto the charts - how could he not, he was one of the most popular musicians of his era - but that's not particularly evident on the tremendous lead single, "Dreamtime," a swirling slice of arty new wave psychedelia that stands in direct contrast to anything Hall & Oates sent into the Top Ten - it might have belonged on Sacred Songs or X-Static, but it could only have been cut in the mid-'80s when Hall had the freedom to make a record like this. And this is a result of an artist who is given the freedom to make close to the record that he wants, with a few commercial concessions, plus a desire to make a modern record. That does mean 3 Hearts is a bit tied to the time, particularly in its production with its clean synths and cavernous drum machines, but that's not necessarily a bad thing since it's primarily of interest as a portrait of where Hall was in 1986. He's not as insistently melodic as he is with Oates, nor is he as experimental as he was on Sacred Songs, and that does mean that 3 Hearts falls in a middle ground that's a bit neither here nor there. And that means it's not particularly cohesive, but it does have its moments, the brightest of which is "Dreamtime," one of his greatest achievements. There are other songs here that aren't quite as good, but it does take a bit of searching to find them, particularly because some of the cuts are either failed experiments or just fall flat. But those moments that do work illustrate that Hall had ambitions that couldn't fit Hall & Oates, and needed an outlet like this, even if he couldn't quite pull it all together all the time. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

5 out of 5 stars Daryl Hall at his best for all H&O fans.......2003-03-16

I'm surprised by all the reviews. I tought the 3 hits song on this album were "Dreamtime" (02.08.86 Top 5), "Foolish Pride" (18.10.86 top 33) and "Someone Like you" (24.01.87 Top 57) on US billboard. Not to mention "I Wasen't Born Yesterday" that really rocks! Of course all other songs are great but a top hit is based on the billboard ratings... I would else say that all the songs on the albums are top hits! :) If your a fan of Hall and Oates because of their special sound. "Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine" is worth the price! Do not miss "Do it for Love" the most recent Hall and Oates album which is their best album since "Big Bam Boom". Enjoy.

To be honest, I thought I was not going to like this CD because I didn't like Sacred Songs. To my surprise and delight, Three Hearts is very good. I loved Hall's voice when he was with Oates and Sacred Songs just didn't do it for me, but this one did. The songs are well written, arranged and performed. I don't think you could go wrong with this one if you like Hall's work.

5 out of 5 stars The Love Collection-We Love You.......2007-07-05

This CD is a nice companion piece to Diana Ross's latest studio album, "I Love You" and in a sense both of the works serve as bookends to her career, thus far. It is fitting that the collection starts with I'm Gonna Make You Love me recorded with the group's brother act the Temptations. Their version of Baby I Need Your Loving is joyous and will have you dancing along. For the more romantically inclined listen to the covers of Unchained Melody and My Funny Valentine. To experience Diana's growth as an artist compare What The World Needs Now to her solo version on her album A Very Special Season. Included here is their first U.S. Top 40 Hit When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes, and the first of ten hits to include "love" in the title. Also from that era you will enjoy hearing Baby Love; Come See About Me, Back In My Arms Again, My World Is Empty Without You and No Matter What Sign You Are. Let's hope there will be a second volume to this collection!

5 out of 5 stars A very nice Supremes collection.......2007-02-15

A nice cd with love songs by the Supremes (Florence Ballard, Diane Ross, Mary Wilson and later Cindy Birdsong).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lanza in (mostly) top form.......2004-11-28

This is a "twofer" CD, consisting of the 1955 soundtrack to the movie Serenade and the 1956 Cavalcade of Show Tunes album. Before I go any further, however, I should acknowledge that I was one of the liner note writers for this release. But I have no financial interest in the CD, and am simply reviewing it here because to date no one else has commented on it!

Serenade marked Lanza's return to films after an absence of three years, and revealed a voice that had darkened considerably, while still retaining its brilliant upper register. Stylistically, this is also a much-improved artist in many respects from the sometimes-wayward tenor of the early 1950s. Anyone who compares Lanza's superbly operatic renditions here of Amor Ti Vieta, Lamento di Federico, and O Paradiso with his earlier versions (all featured on the CD Mario Lanza Sings Opera Arias and Duets) will immediately detect the new-found control in his singing.

That's not to say that all of the Serenade material is outstanding. Lanza's renditions of Nessun Dorma, O Soave Fanciulla, Di Quella Pira, and the title song are below par, with the tenor uncharacteristically strained in the upper register and rough in his approach. But redeeming everything are the oustanding renditions of the arias mentioned in the previous paragraph, together with Lanza's sensitive singing of Di Rigori Armato from Der Rosenkavalier, a superb Torna a Surriento, and an unsurpassed Dio! Mi Potevi Scagliar from Otello. Lanza also recorded the Act III duet from Otello with Licia Albanese for this film, but time constraints have reduced it to a brief extract here. (The entire duet, however, can be heard on the aforementioned Arias & Duets CD.)

The other album featured here showcases the romantic side of Lanza. Beautifully recorded, Cavalcade includes passionate renditions of Yours is My Heart Alone, Only a Rose, Will You Remember, and other selections from operetta and musical comedy. Although Lanza may indeed be *too* zestful here for some tastes, vocally at least, he is at the height of his powers. The voice is rich and round - gloriously consistent throughout its registers - and the abundance of effortless B flats, Bs, and even a high C reveal a tenor in formidable form.

Highly recommended.

Toro: Pancho, Men at Work's last record is a great record. Pancho: Si Toro, while Two Hearts only went Gold they did create one more classic before calling it a day. Toro: Everything I Need and Maria were great songs and proved they could still come up withs great songs. Pancho: Sad part was that the original rhythm section was gone and Ron Strykert had left and success tore the band apart. Toro: Durans Durans on the other hand imploded and were all but forgotten in the US(save a fluke comeback in 1993). Pancho: Men at Work KNEW WHEN TO QUIT! This album is out of print so you'll have to go on websites to find it. VAMINOS!

4 out of 5 stars Short but Nice..........2003-04-02

I believe I have every single song that Anggun has done. Discovering her with a Soliday album song "Qui Sait" which was truly amazing that led me to buy both english and french versions of her other two cd's, Snow On The Sahara (Au nom De La Lune) and Chrysalis (Desirs Contraires) and now we have Open Hearts.

I bought this CD way back in November of last year (2002) from Amazon.fr and was eager to listen to it. After first listening to it, I didn't really think too much of it because it really didn't match her previous albums. But then, when you listen to it a little more you begin to really appreciate it more as the songs really grow on you.

Of all of the songs on the CD I believe "I'm Your Mirror" is probably the best and would catch on best here in the states, but I think that's hoping for a lot since Anggun has never been promoted properly here and that is a real shame.

For those that are familiar with Anggun's sound, this album takes a turn to a more pop-oriented style which to me means that it is not as beautiful but more simplified without orchestra accompaniments.

She still amazes me because I just love her voice and style which she brings forth in this more up-beat CD along with a mix of chant-rap which today's popular music has a lot of.

If you love Anggun is it definitely worth the buy.

5 out of 5 stars Open your ears and listen tru your heart..........2003-02-19

Open Hearts, is one of anggun soundtrack album for the movie with the same title. When i first knew that she will collaborate in such project, i except an impromptu last minute release type of quality because it is a soundtrack which is just to complete a movie.SUPRISINGLY, its not. This soundtrack is well crafted, well produced and its a well plan project waiting for someone to lend a voice on its track.which they did brilliantly choose anggun. The sound of the album is urban, fresh, pop, string instruments, and also even a raw tracks that highlight anggun voice with just a piano.I MUST admit that this album is my favourite album by anggun now.then followed others. If the outcome of this album is this great.I expect something similar or better for her 3rd album which is due to be release soon.
Open Hearts OST will appeal to everyone, i reckon everyone will enjoy this one.Its not a typical urban album. This album has IT.Every single track is special and well selected.Starting from the first track till the last one.which im sure u will replay the album again and again.i promise u that.

      1. Counting Down 3.45 (Jesper winge leisner, Niels Brinck )
an uplifting opening track, with the drums and the upbeat music. it tells how you reminisce your relationship with someone.how the first time you met them, how do you respond to the first move.what if u didnt respond to the first very move.would you be a different person now?what if u never met ur love ones.would u be what u are now."its funny when how coincidence rules, you could be at other place and life if u turn right, left or you just walk out ahead..." the writer ask us to think about that.Interesting lyrics.Great danceable "2 steps"tune.you'll love it!(5/5)

      2. Open Your Heart 3.27 ( Jesper winge leisner, Niels Brinck, Anggun )
the opening music of the song is simply haunting and fresh.i dunno.u have to listen to it yourself.its a great song with a great hook.the song tells us to open our heart to love someone to unexpected love that come to us or maybe an unexpected love.open our hearts and listen to our surrounding.open our hearts and love someone, everything.dont ignore your love sense.use it.make use it.dont be afraid to love someone.its a beautiful song.suitable with our deal with war and uncertainty right now.if those people can just stop and listen....to the message.(5/5)

      3. Little Things 4.29 (Jesper winge leisner, Niels Brinck )
This is one special track. The music speak for itself.it hook, the beat will make u want to listen to the song again and again. It tells about how lil things can be so important.how lil things can hurt you, can influence you and how lil things can be so precious.(5/5)

      4. Blue Satellite 3.44 (Jesper winge leisner, Niels Brinck )
this is happy mode.with a guitar plays the main role in this special tracks.its a sing-a-long song.melodic and can make u likes it from the very first listen.it tells about how special your relationship with ur love ones.how both of you need each other, how both of u connect to each other.its a lovely song with an uplifting bridge.i like the part when anggun hit the high notes.if u her fans u will know how special anggun voice when she hit the high notes :).(5/5)

      5. The End of a Story 4.42 ( Jesper winge leisner, Niels Brinck, Anggun )
okay, this is a serious song with a serious message of relationship.but the way the anggun deliver the song suit the music very well and set the mood of seriousness.eventho the theme talks about what you hope on a relationship and how far you want it to go. Eventho its serious.the music is well balance and crafted in such a way that you will end up puting this song in a special place in your heart.its an enjoyable song."whats about to begin, its the end of story...."(5/5)

      6. I'm Your Mirror 3.42 (Jesper winge leisner, Niels Brinck )
in this song you will notice some of eastern feel in it.just a bit tho cause the whole song still dominate by urban feel in it.there's also some 'aboriginal voices touch' layered in the chorus which makes the song even more interesting.the song tells about how special and important you are towards ur love ones just like a mirror, which can reflects all the love, passion to each other.its a beautiful song.this is a party song..danceable and happy-go-lucky mode.

      7. Pray 4.16 ( Jesper winge leisner, Niels Brinck, Anggun )
another deep sensual but DANCEABLE serious tune from the composer.with a beautiful lyrics by anggun and jesper.i like the song cause it sound complicated, mysterious, and upbeat.you can imagine how brilliant the video will be to interprate the song into visual."pray for life, pray for all love in the world.."its a positive song with a great message that carry hopes to each and every living elements in the world.it there's a remix for this song.i can imagine it could hit the dance charts.(5/5)

      8. I Wanna Hurt You 4.57 (Jesper winge leisner, Niels Brinck )
a dance tune with a fast speed composition with a touch of disco.which is interesting cause the song lyrics carry a serious, sad, deep message.anggun voice soar brilliantly which convey the song message very clearly.mad, sad, frustriation to the point where you can listen to a part where she sound almost singing while sobbing?i dunno, get the album and listen to yourself.the song really tease your anger and makes you become angry and deeply hurt.great song!(5/5)

      9. Naked Sleep 4.20 (Jesper winge leisner, Niels Brinck )
okay, after listening to all danceable tunes, this song is completely naked in its own meaning.the song is rawly just a piano with a simple key.i think niels want the song to be completely raw and "naked".the lyric written by jesper tells the longiness of someone you love.you want them to be closer, how deeply and badly u want them to be beside you.the composer wants to highlight anggun voice.its the main player in the track.which she deliver it brilliantly...and you feel like sucking every notes of it till u didnt realize the track has reach it last song.....and you of course will hit the "replay" button once again......(5/5)

great album.an amazing production and well polish album by jesper, niels and anggun.notice how i end up every song with a high score?skeptical?believe me, thats the truth.im so satisfied with album.it worth every penny i spent on it.every track is a "single" material if u know what i mean.if you see this album at a record store.BUY..its anggun in a different perspective.
urban, stylish, hip and enjoyable album is knockin on your door.do u dare to open it?

Anggun's powerful vocals carries the album beautifully and succeeds in breaking what otherwise might have been a melancholic, dull soundtrack. For those of us who've awaited a sequel to Chrysalis (2 years+) this soundtrack to a movie that I have no desire to see will have to be an Anggun-fix until the next album comes out. It is a little more pop oriented than her brilliant predecessors (Snow on the Sahara, Un Nom de la Lune, Chrysalis) but there are a few little elements of world-beat that pop up now and again--Sundanese call and response, other Indonesian folk forms. Not enough, however. Unlike the last reviewer, I don't think the former head of her label did her justice (his job only netted him trophy wives and he put out a French language version of Chrysalis here in N.America while I found an English version in Indonesia!--go figure!). Maybe she will find a new label that will know how to work her right.
But after all, it is Anggun-- who stands head and shoulders over most of the [tripe] that permeates the industry --and for that reason the recording is worth a listen. Pray that she's working on more material that sounds more like her original vision and less like she's pandering to the music industry.

      4 out of 5 stars Impressive Debut.......2006-07-10

While it's true that the early Royal Hunt albums pale in comparison to the DC Cooper-era releases, they are still good albums that are unfairly looked over.

Land of Broken Hearts was the band's debut album. If nothing else, you have to admire Royal Hunt for debuting with a keyboard-heavy, melodic metal sound at a time when that style was not very well received. The songs on Land of Broken Hearts are a bit uneven. There are some filler tracks on the album, but it also features some of the band's all-time classics, such as Flight, Age Gone Wild, Kingdom Dark, Stranded, and the title track, which is a personal favorite of mine.

Vocalist Henrik Brockmann does an admirable job, but it's hard to see him as anything more than a placeholder for DC Cooper, whose all too brief tenure with Royal Hunt would take the band to new heights of success. Fortunately we got to hear DC Cooper perform some of the album's better songs on the double-live set "1996".

Overall, Land of Broken Hearts was an impressive debut from a band that would continue to improve, and is worth checking out if you're a Royal Hunt fan.

NOTE: There are a number of different versions of Land of Broken Hearts. The best is the 1999 SVP reissue, which adds three bonus tracks (acoustic versions of Stranded, Land of Broken Hearts, and Age Gone Wild) for a total of 15 tracks.
