Customer Reviews:
Some of the best Motown ever...........2007-07-12
Bobby Taylor (and The Vancouvers) performed some of the best music to ever come out of Motown, yet they are widely unknown. I highly recommend this CD set to all who like the Motown sound and groups such as The Temptations. Taylor and crew come across as perhaps a tad less professional and less polished than some other Motown groups, yet their loose sound is what makes their music so special. For example, their take on The Tempts' "It's Growing" is, in my opinion, far superior to the original. Taylor's version has a nice garage-type sound that just flows. Wonderful. The song "Fading Away" is also a splendid of example of a Motown classic that was never discovered. This set is 46 songs worth of excellence and entertainment.
The best out of all of the Motown Anthologies and Collections out of Great Britain.
Was very please.......2007-03-13
Got this for a gift, and they just love it...Very Best Condition..
Memories.......2006-11-19
They say, "good things come to those who wait" (especially if you are looking hard while you are waiting!). At first all I knew about Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers was from my three 45's, a AND b-sides. That was enough for the group to make my BOLO (be on the look out), and Most Wanted list. But I was never able to get the album or cd. Over time with the help of the internet, I became more and more informed and fan-cinated with the group. Thanks to Universal Music Operations, the first 12 songs on CD1 mirror the groups one and only Motown album. Be advised, the Amazon listing is not in order. Next we get all of the songs from Bobby's -Taylor Made Soul- Album. Hey, who was doing the backup singing on all of those songs? CD2 consists mostly of a lot of good unreleased covers by Bobby Taylor. I would have been thrilled with just the 24 selections from disc 1, so all the rest is just icing on the cake. One of my favorites is Malinda, and not just because the fingerprints of that poetic genius, Smokey Robinson, are all over the lyrics.
Now a rant: Do the people running the remnants and affiliates of Motown know anything about marketing? Clearly, Motown at its peak was overloaded with more talent than they knew what to do with. They keep repackaging the big 10 groups literally a thousand times over while dozens of other talented groups and hundreds of great songs have virtually disappeared from public consciousness. (I am not ignoring the recent efforts of the Universal Music companies). So here is a free recommendation from someone who has done his own market research with the target market. Do a series of cd's with a name like "The Lost Hits of Motown". At 20 hits a cd, you could easily fill 3 cd's with memorable top 20 songs by Shorty Long, Kim Weston, Blinky, Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers, The Contours, The Elgins, et al. Then there are all of the acts that, if you are not over 50 or 60 you would never realize that they once worked for Motown, like The Isley Brothers, Barbara McNair, Billy Eckstine, Meatloaf, The Spinners, not to mention that old hippy dude from That 70's Show. I think that by reintroducing some of the BEST forgotten songs of these forgotten Motown groups to people under 50, they could awaken a whole new set of buyers who would be interested in other songs by these acts. And of course people over 50 would surely snap up the cd's for themselves and for gifts.
If we depended on U.S. power callers.............2006-05-06
to get the music (especially the rarer) onto cd and access availible worldwide, we'd be "hung out to dry"! The examples of such add up like years. This stupendous release exemplifies such in crystal clear clarity. He's a story, about 10 years ago, while speaking with a high level reissue exec responsible for a number of the Motown label reissues, that made it to store shelves over the years, I asked him if the label would be reissuing onto cd Bobby Taylor's (of Bobby Taylor And The Vancouvers fame) ultra rare and expensive, one an only solo album "Taylor Made Soul", released in 1970, after he abrubtly left the group seeking solo fame, only one year after the group finally had reached a point of an album release after signing with Motown, from their far West roots? My album, which was hard enough to procure, wasn't in unplayed condition when I obtained it, so a digitally remastered cd reissue, based on the obscurity of the album, since the label had never pushed it upon release, would be great! The album cover shows him styling glasses similar to the type David Ruffin fronted at the time. David's first solo album effort after his departure from the Tempations, 1969's "My Whole World Ended", had done well enough and perhaps it was believed by the then Motown power callers that Bobby might have similar success with his solo effort? Over the years, the cd reissue of Bobby Taylor's album did not forthcome. I previously wrote a review on the out of print, sought after reissue cd of the 1969 album Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers "Does Your Mama Know About Me", which has commanded supply demand numbers for quite some time. The exec, who had an office in NYC and in the warehouse where the original Motown tapes were and are currently being stored, and to your surprise, in New Jersey (shipped to NJ from California after the label was sold the 2nd time)! He told me the company had already reissued the album on cd in 1994, "yeah, we reissued the Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers album on cd in '94". I said to him "no, I'm talking about Bobby Taylor's solo Motown album". He said, "Bobby Taylor had a solo album on Motown"? He didn't even know that Motown had released a solo lp by Bobby Taylor. Now, the English and Japanese, they know about his album and 45s, and have em'! For Motown music collectors, this cd is a "Bomb"! And once again it took the foreigners to get it to market! Bobby Taylor's solo recordings have never, prior to now, been released in a set on cd. England's Motown/Spectrum label, which reissues cds of some of the less famous Motown artists, and rarer songs on the known artists, receives the highest praises in putting this together. They went into the Motown tapes and dug out Bobby Taylor's work. What a job has been done here! The double cd contains what was the out of print Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers album, his ultra rare "Taylor Made Soul" album, and the tracks from he with the group and his solo tracks, all that did not make the two albums! WOW!!!!! From that standpoint how can we do any better? His solo uptempo 45 "Oh, I've Been Blessed" commands very strong numbers on England's Northern Soul scene, and is one of my favorites on his lp. When it comes to rarer soul, the English and Japanese are amazing! U.S. power callers have had their chance for years, didn't happen. The English knew, and got it done! 5 Stars. There are titles here that weren't released by Motown on album or 45, who needs to discuss them? Motown collectors specifically, old school music collectors in general, do I need to say... It's Buy Time?

Required for any true M&P fan.......2006-02-06
Wonderful collection, when you are used to the hits though you have to appreciate the not so well known hits. At any rate John wrote most of them and it give us a chance to learn more about him through his songs. A+. If you are thinking about buying it..DO it!!!
I'd love to leave a five-star review..........2005-11-27
but...the single version of "Creeque Alley," the one with a horn-blowing free-for-all, is NOT in the collection. Thank goodness I still have my scratched-up 45rpm... Other than that, all six albums, except for "A Gathering of Flowers," are wholly-represented. Some dialogue and rehearsal cuts from that two-LP anthology are included, though.
There is an entire disc of rarities and solo cuts from each group member. Unfortunately, the songs representing Cass are the same-old, run-of-the-mill cuts ("It's Getting Better," "Make Your Own Kind of Music" and "New World Coming"). What about "Talkin' To Your Toothbrush," or "You Know Who I Am?" Or even "Burn Your Hatred?" Fortunately, the theme from "Doctors' Wives" is included. I never heard it before. (What we need to hear next is the theme from "L'Amour.") I've heard some, but not all, solo recordings of Michelle, John and Denny, so I was pleased with the cuts representing their work.
I know that the group members and many fans hated "People Like Us," but I have to admit that I always loved that album!! The notes indicate that that recording may have hurt the careers of the individual group members, that they never made the charts on their own accord again. Sorry, but I don't agree. Had Cass lived longer, she would definitely have made the charts again. She was in the process of finding herself as an artist. The other group members did not try to find solo success beyond a limited number of recordings, and each ultimately pursued a different direction.
Summing up, it is amazing that this foursome created such an awesome body of work that was so small, yet so affecting. Their harmonies were amazing! And their material, even the filler and contractually-obligated, is worth listening to today, 40 years after "California Dreamin'" was released.
Ultimately Irresistable - Long Overdue.......2005-11-04
Mamas & Papas Complete Anthology wins, without any doubt, Box Set of the New Millenium's First Decade, hand down-high five-thumbs up-"10" Stars-you name the highest award. It's been a long time-a-comin'! This VOCAL group remains one of Pop Music's most mysteriously alluring ensembles in modern music history. Music fans seem to never get enough Mamas & Papas product, regardless of the ongoing endless reissues which have appeared since the group's two and half year heyday and ill fated demise. Of all the male-female ensemble groups to ever explode onto the radio/best selling charts - this group easily wins first place as the most impeccably perfect VOCAL musical creators of all time. All good things come to an end, but, some remain forever!...More on this super collection later, as this music lover listens, absorbs, and savors this indefinable collection...stay tuned...
VOICES LIKE THEIRS .......2005-09-13
Once again, a reason to despair for the questionable state of affairs known as the American music industry of today and it's quest for youthful, talentless hacks who need to be filtered, edited, vocodered, sampled, sweetened, fixed. Why, oh why, did this unparalled, marvelous set have to be compiled & released in the U.K.? The British arm of Universal is even willing to give so much room & accuracy to the American chart & release histories, not only of the band in it's regrettably all too brief period of existence, but of the subsequent individual careers of Cass, Michelle, Denny & John. Many kudos to them.
The effortless, seemingly pure harmonies, let alone the individual talents have had an unrivalled, eternally lasting, effect on anyone who loves, or even remotely gives a hoot, about what vocal music can be. The beautiful remastering of EVERYTING included in the lavish set is beyond reproach. Yes, even "People Like Us." The long ridiculed, yet not at all out of step with the period it was recorded sounds exemplary in this set. Frankly, if anything is out of step with this collection it is the Barry McGuire tracks that finish off the forth disc, but with the unmistakable vocals that back him, it is easy to forgive their inclusion.
The book is equally incredible. Previously unseen photos & artwork abound, recording & release details. Unlike so many "so-called" anthologies of more than a decade, the "digipack/book" concept is meant to be accessed, read, poured over. No threat of the book falling apart over time from poor binding, or getting lost if not put back in a jewel case immediately.
As a personal recommendation, it would be well worth any effort to follow this with the recent releases of the respective solo works from Hip-O of both Cass & Michelle. Hopefully, someday, the same will happen for the long ignored solo works of Denny & John, not to mention the difficult to find RCA releases of Cass.
101 SONGS? You've got to be kidding!.......2005-06-29
The Mamas and The Papas were nothing more than a blip on the radar screen of rock n roll history. They had a few decent hits.
Some communties sentence you to listen to this set in its entirety as community service punishment. I defy any of you to name 10 Mamas And The Papas songs off the top of your head that were NOT hits.
OK GO! I knew it, you can't do it. The best of CD's are more than enough.

Amazon.com essential recording
Balancing raw power with shades of vulnerability, Gaye rose to the top of Motown's roster without the benefit of a supporting vocal group. Whether singing love songs or social commentary, Gaye's voice displays an earnestness and sincerity that are a soul singer's most potent weapons. Among these 47 hits are his memorable duets with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, and Tammi Terrell along with Motown staples such as "Can I Get a Witness," "How Sweet It Is," "Ain't That Peculiar," and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." This 2 CD set also covers socially conscious 1970s originals such as "What's Going On," "Mercy, Mercy Me," and "Inner City Blues." Only his last hit, "Sexual Healing," is left out. --Marc Greilsamer

i had the original motown cd...the one i ordered from
amazon was a HORRIBLE sound quality. the outside of the cd
said it was done in 'germany'...the sound was hollow and
scratchy. i returned it with a minimal amt of trouble.
An impeccable collection of classic Marvin.......2005-12-13
I am not used to writing reviews but I had to for this item. This is the most comprehensive collecion of classics from Marvin Gaye, especially the second disc. He has had such an influence from Soul and R&B to Hip-Hop and continues to be a legendary force in music. If you are seriously considering purchasing a Marvin Gaye album, please go with this one. It will give you a balanced and enjoyable experience with the beauty of his music and will leave you wondering why you hadn't done it sooner. I was 18 when I "borrowed" this album from my mother and don't think she will love it as much as I have consistantly loved it for the past 5 years.
Amazon has double listed the 2nd disc.......2005-04-04
The track listing for the second disc has been repeated. There are only twenty (20) songs on the second CD, not forty (40).
BTW, great album. This is the best 'best of' collection/ compilation/ anthology of Marvin Gaye's work, outside of the box set.
Superb anthology .......2004-11-28
Marvin Gaye was a great singer who lived from 1939-1984. He had a tremendous vocal ability that allowed him to sing sweet soul music, politically-aware commentaries, hard funk, disco-ish stuff and eco-friendly classics all with equal conviction. As a boy in 1985 I remember TWO tribute songs to him that charted in the US Top 10 - a measure of the esteem in which he and his music was held. As one of the original Motown artists, he helped to define the golden era of mid-60's pop music, and trumped even this with his great album What's Going On in 1971.
This superb anthology from the Motown vaults is packed with great songs, and I have been a big fan of this record since discovering it in 2001. I cannot recommend this more highly to those Amazon shoppers who may yet be unaware of this great vocalist.
By the way, these Motown Anthology 2CD sets are not to be missed. Try out The Supremes and The Temptations also in this series.
5 stars!!
The Diary of a Motown and Soul Music Legend.......2004-05-18
Now I know that some of you are disappointed that Marv's last hit (at least on the pop charts), "Sexual Healing", is not in this fabulous collection of classic hits but let's face it, it chronicles his time as a MOTOWN artist. So of course they weren't going to include an out-of-label hit even if the hit was viable to that star's career. Same thing they did with Diana Ross and Michael Jackson's anthologies.
Anyway, this 2-CD (or 2-tape) collection of 67 songs, 40-some known hit singles and some album cuts, b-sides and rarities is the PERFECT album for a true artist like Marvin Gaye was. Many cats can only wish that they can have the hit catalogue that this brotha from the Chocolate City had! I mean, he was not only just a popular singer who recorded some of the 20th century's greatest songs and albums known to mankind, but he was also a great writer, producer, arranger, mixer, musician and instrumentalist not to mention he already had a career as a lead singer of two R&B groups in the late-'50s before signing with Motown in 1961 to be a jazz singer (his original intention of rebelling against what people were telling him how he should be).
And then you can't forget his LEGENDARY and AMAZING duets with classic R&B female legends like Mary Wells (the first female superstar of Motown), Kimberly Weston, the wonderful and memorable Tammi Terrell and last but not least the Motown Queen, Diana Ross. So not only has his career spread four decades but in the middle of it, he was able to be in a couple of groups, be a legendary duet partner and he even played in a couple of movies or three.
But anyway back to the anthology set of Marvin! The man's hit career spreads into three or four or even five different periods at a time:
Suave Gentleman (1962-67)
Soul Loverman (1967-70)
Patriotic Ghetto Warrior (1971-1972)
Romantic and Erotic Ladies' Man (1973-1977)
Confessional Ghetto Preacher (1978-1981)
The first CD (full of 20 solo hits and 7 wonderful duets) may be the most interesting of the anthology set. It shows Marvin at first reaching his inner Sam Cooke in the early portion of his career going from "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" to "Baby Don't U Do It" and then finding his own voice slowly from "How Sweet It Is" and then finally finding his vocal POWER in songs like "You" (check out the HIGH note near the middle of the song!) and "Grapevine". And then there's the memorable duets with Tammi Terrell that are the essence of true soul. Marvin & Tammi should both be inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame just for the five songs listed on the album.
But then again, the second CD of the anthology set can be the most complex! I mean, this is when Marvin Gaye took FULL ARTISTIC CONTROL and gave us the legendary albums WHAT'S GOING ON, TROUBLE MAN, LET'S GET IT ON, MARVIN GAYE LIVE, I WANT YOU, HERE, MY DEAR, and IN OUR LIFETIME (which was Marvin's first entry into the '80s). You would fall in love with the different production of "What's Going On", without so much of the people talking and just the music, it also shows more of Marvin's vocal backings in its beautiful pitch. "God Is Love", even with its short time, is classic MOTOWN with a gospel-soul feel to it. You had a feeling R. Kelly was listening closely to this album while making Step In The Name of Love. "Sad Tomorrows" with its different feel of a bluesy and classical feel and with that soul is different from the album version (Flying High) from What's Going On and it's also breathtaking that you have to play it over and over. "The World Is Rated X" and "You're The Man" is the brotha's finest work as a political preacher as he sung about the social ills of the world and the political administration. And of course songs from the wonderful "Let's Get It On" album is produced brilliantly here. "Just to Keep U Satisfied" is classic doo-wop!
Then you get into the live recording of "Distant Lover" even while edited (for album purposes) and well it's still a masterpiece. "I Want You" and "After the Dance" are classics and of course "Got to Give It Up" is a blue-light in the basement party anthem that is still hot even after all these years. Finally Marvin's later work with "Here, My Dear" and "In Our Lifetime" are produced and helps brings a climatic ending to the entire 2-CD set.
From "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" in 1962 where he was in love with a girl but somehow stubborn to his or his woman's feelings to when he was looking for love in 1981's funky "Heavy Love Affair", it's particularly the Diary of Marvin Gaye. Nobody in soul music was like this cat and there will be nobody like him again no matter what you say! Marvin Gaye is forever the Original King of R&B! (TAKE THAT, WHITNEY, HA-HA!)

Aerosmith's reign as America's greatest hard-rock heroes seemed all but over at the end of the '70s, the victim of internal squabbles, drug abuse, and a cocooned, decadent environment. Set against that backdrop, their '80's label switch and resurgence--and an eventual iconic, widespread acceptance even more pervasive than during their "prime"--was initially as gratifying as it was unlikely. This double-disc, 34-track compilation of the Geffen years chronicles a not-so-young band clawing their way back to the top with a hungry frenzy that shamed many upstarts half their age. With all the high points intact (including their groundbreaking rock-rap redux of "Walk this Way" with Run D.M.C., "Rag Doll," "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)," "Love In an Elevator," "Janie's Got a Gun," "The Other Side," Cryin'" et al.), this compilation offers up the expected live extras (a handful of old hits and '90's staples), soundtrack cuts ("Deuces Are Wild" and the Doors' "Love Me Two Times") and sundry rarities (including the non-album cuts "Don't Stop" and "Can't Stop Messin'," B-side "Head First," and Japan-only "Ain't Enough")--though, sadly, no "Theme to Wayne's World." But by its waning tracks, it also documents the encroaching influences of hired-gun tunesmiths like Desmond Child and Glen Ballard, and the band's troubling tendency to hew ever closer to the middle-of-the-road as its fame burgeoned. Younger listeners may well treasure this album as a history of Aerosmith's golden years, B.D.--as in before Diane (Warren). --Jerry McCulley

A Perfect Aerosmith Overview.......2007-03-12
If someone were new to the band Aerosmith I would definitely recommend two CDs,one would be this collection and the other would be "O'Yeah" between these 2 collections the casual fan would have all the essential Aerosmith tunes recorded both during their Columbia career and their Geffen career
sure, some of the songs are repeated, but the bonus and hard to find tracks are well worth buying both sets
in fact, even if you are like me and own every Aerosmith album,it's still worth buying both collections for the convenience of having all the songs on 2 easy to carry CDs and of course for the bonus materials
normally I'm very irritated by bands that release numerous 'greatest hits' packages (for example,Kiss,Iron Maiden,Heart,Def Leppard,Motley Crue,Poison,to name a few) but in the case of Aerosmith I would definitely recommend this one and 'O Yeah' ,as for the original 'greatest hits' collection,it is all songs from the 70s and all the songs can be found on 'O Yeah' except for 'Remember' and 'Come Together' but you can either download those two songs (legally of course) or buy the CD since it is relatively inexpensive, same with the latest 'greatest hits' package,it features all the same songs found on these 2 collections except for 2 new songs (which are both really good) but can be legally downloaded very inexpensively
back to the point here...this CD collection 'Young Lust' features the songs from the bands Geffen years, and does a nice job of covering every album from that time period (unlike 'Oh Yeah' which ignores 'done with mirrors' completely) and shows why the band dominated the airwaves and MTV throughout the late 80s early 90s...this is essential listening for all fans of rock music
and is a great overview (along with O Yeah) for anyone that is just discovering these great American rock legends!
the upside - has all the hits you could ever want from the Geffen years in one easy to carry package
the downside - can't really think of any
the bottom line - If you love Aerosmith,or rock in general, run out and buy this CD...donutman says so!!!
I must say, I'm liking the cover :).......2006-07-04
This is a great collection from an incredible band. Though not the best, as it doesn't have some of it's hit songs in their hit forms, like live or acoustic, it's still one of the better collections. Though I noticed it has almost the same song list as the later album, " Aerosmith Gold". Of the two, I suggest this one. Plus, just look at the cover of "Young Lust"! Anyways, this or "Gold" along with "Aerosmith" and "Toys in The Attic" would be a good buy. This along with "Aerosmith's Greatest Hits" would be a bad buy because on the greatest hits, the songs, like "Sweet Emotion", are edited WAY to much. I have the unfortunate fortune to have "Young Lust" and "Aerosmith's Greatest Hits". The live "Dream On" on this and "Gold" from "A Little South of Sanity" is very well done for a live, though it's still better to have the original studios as well. This is a very good buy, better than "Gold". AEROSMITH ROCKS!
Young Lust.......2005-01-30
Particularly if you don't have any of their other albums, or if you have giant gaps in your mid-years Aerosmith collection, this is a great anthology. It includes a lot of odds, ends, and B-sides from their other albums, plus the greats, like Elevator, Ragdoll, Dude Looks Like a Lady, and the Run DMC Walk this Way. There's also a four song live segment, and while the live Dream On and Fallin' in Love are fabulous tracks, I think the live Sweet Emotion is weaker than the studio. Because this is a one-label anthology, it's missing most of the comeback hits (Pink, Don't Wanna Miss a Thing, Jaded, etc.) which is a real disappointment. Still, a great listen and well worth the money.
(...)kicking aerosmith does it again and again.......2005-01-16
whether your a die hard fan or a new listener...you will love this cd with all of the best songs of aerosmith who are by far one of the last few REAL hard rock bands around who can still get down and dirty
****1/2 - a really good latter-day overview.......2004-08-01
"Young Lust - The Aerosmith Anthology" chronicles Aerosmith's Geffen-years from the mid-eighties onward.
Gathering 34 singles, album tracks and live cuts, it offers a fine retrospective, and it manages to include almost all of the best songs from Aerosmith's last six studio albums. This is pretty much all that the casual fan will need.
Having said that, I would have preferred a leaner version of "Amazing" to the orchestrated one included here, but the acoustic rendition of the hit "Livin' On The Edge" is really good, and Run-DMC's take on the sublime hard rock song "Walk This Way" is included, too.
The live versions of "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion" are sort of pointless, though, and those two should have been left off in favour of two or three more songs from the band's Geffen years, but the selection is generally very good, and small flaws like those I just mentioned don't really ruin the overall impression.
The MTV-staples "Dude (looks like a lady)" and "Love In An Elevator" are here, as well as power ballads like "Angel", "Cryin'", and "Crazy", the underrated blues shuffle "Hangman Jury", the melodic (and disturbing) "Janie's Got A Gun", and several other smashes like "The Other Side", "What It Takes", and the hard rockers "Eat The Rich", "Head First", "Let The Music Do The Talking", "Rag Doll", and "My Fist Your Face".
"Young Lust" also includes and excellent version of the Door's "Love Me Two Times", as well as "Deuces Are Wild", "Blind Man" and "Walk On Water", the three previously unreleased songs from Aerosmith's earlier Geffen compilation, "Big Ones".
This well-annotated double disc compilation is the best available overview of Aerosmith's latter-day output. Get this one, and the excellent box set "Pandora's Box" for the 'Smith's seventies classics, and you're set!

Another Motown Winner.......2007-07-12
This set is not as good, overall, as the Motown collections by Bobby Taylor, The Velvelettes, and Kim Weston, possibly because The Elgins were not as good as some of those other entertainers or maybe because the material they were given to perform was less appealing. Evenso, this set is definitely a must-have for true Motown fans. The first disc, which is basically all Elgins tracks, is excellent. The second, comprised of earlier material by the group members before they became the Elgins and some single versions of Elgins' hits, is less entertaining. All of disc one is great. The highlight of disc two are Saundra Mallett's solos, including two wherein she was backed by The Vandellas. Like all of the British Motown compilations, the set has great liner notes and group history.
Thanks, Universal!!.......2007-06-18
For those of us who wanted the Elgins' "Darling Baby" album released on disc, it's finally here! Thanks to Universal Group in the United Kingdom (because we don't like our own music!!), I have before me a copy of their Motown Anthology. At first I thought, "Oh goodie!! A disc is finally issued by The Elgins!!" But when I saw the track listing, I was appalled as to why a second album was not issued in early 1968, at least. These two discs not only include the album and subsequent single, "It's Been a Long, Long Time", but vaulted recordings of The Downbeats and some great songs by Saundra Mallett. Both Johnny Dawson (who sounds like a cross between James Brown and Professor Charles Taylor) and Saundra had such great vocal skills that a few blues recordings emerge here. "I Still Love You", an Elgins track with Saundra deftly singing the lead, is an exquisite track worthy of Aretha and Etta. They also handle Stevie Wonder's "Thank You Love" very well while "Let's Give Love Another Chance" is so bluesy that it defies traditional Motown outright. Mallett takes on sliding vocal trails only a skilled Gospel singer would try. The hits become a distant memory as these unreleased tracks eclipse their all too familiar appearance. Johnny Dawson sings on "Another Hurt Like This", written by the late, great Shorty Long. For those who enjoy listening to Martha & the Vandellas' reading of Shorty's "You've Been on My Mind" from the "Spellbound" collection, this will be a keeper for sure. Marvin Gaye's "When You Are Available" compares to anything he ever wrote and produced for The Originals. A lilting soul number, it brings back the feel of Marvin & Tammi's classic "If This World Were Mine". The Dean-Witherspoon team is responsible for "Life Can Be Beautiful" (which could have been a smash by Jimmy Ruffin who cut his hits on their repertoire), "My Love For Your Love" and "Love Where Are You Hiding" are all irresistible pieces of soul. By this time the Elgins switched female vocalists, but the recordings kept going. No releases, however were made of these recordings. The new lead singer sounds a bit like Tammi Terrell, with a bit of Barbara McNair thrown in. Clarence Paul's "All For Just Lovin' You" sounds at first like a slowed down reworking of "Put Yourself in My Place", but its Gospel overtones uncover a more soulful recording. The Downbeats' "Request of a Fool" b/w "Your Baby's Back" single is here, but a superior alternate vocal track is heard on the latter. "Don't You Know I Love You Baby", and "I Feel So Fine" could have been great vehicles for The Contours, while "Let the Groove Roll On" is a spin-off on Mahalia Jackson's "Let the Chruch Roll On". The Downbeats are at full steam giving some backing vocals in the tradition of James Brown's Famous Flames! "All I Got" was originally recorded by Saundra Mallett, as heard here. It was tried out on Marvin Gaye and Mary Wells on their 1964 "Together" sessions, but not used for that album. Saundra gives it her typical Etta James-style vocal. "Boo-Hoo" is a Berry Gordy production close to The Supremes' "Buttered Popcorn" with the tenor man mimicking the Mar-Keys' "Last Night". Janie Bradford and Richard Wylie penned a nice blues tune in "First Try At Love". Why this wasn't given to Mable John is beyond me. Saundra does it great, a complicated time signature, but she doesn't miss a beat. How does she do it? "Party Time" is a reworking of Chubby Checker's "Pony Time". It's obvious, but they get away with it. One of The Downbeats' original tunes, it was written by Johnny Dawson. "Until I Lost You" returns to the blues, and this is where Dawson brings everything to the pulpit. These guys could have been huge at Cincinnati's King label. The recording features a brand new jazz-soul sensation, an 11 year old Stevie Wonder who played harmonica. Saundra's single, "Camel Walk" b/w "It's Gonna Be Hard Times" is here in all its wonder with Martha & the Vandellas pulling backup duties as only they can. The baby, baby, baby on "Camel Walk" is reminiscent of Dee Dee Sharpe's vocal on "Slow Twistin'", her immortal duet with Chubby Checker. Marvin Gaye fills in on piano. The B-side, however was the more popular of the two as it became part of the "Darling Baby" album, closing Side One. The Downbeats follow with more vault selections filled with hard R&B and rockers too many to mention here. If there's a bad track here, I can't find it. Perhaps the lowest point is the '65 aborted single release, "Do You Know What I'm Talking About" b/w "You Say You Love Me", first issued on "The Complete Motown Singles, Vol. 5". The reason for holding back its release was because Holland-Dozier-Holland had a pair of killer tunes for Saundra with The Downbeats recording the backing vocals. Then, after the name change, Saundra & The Downbeats were history and The Elgins name took over. The set features a new stereo mix of "It's Been a Long, Long Time", but it should be pointed out that "Darling Baby" has not only been re-mixed from its earlier stereo inception, but also extended. The original album contained all B-sides from their singles under the Elgins name, a rarity in most Motown albums. Consequently, this is one of the most essential collections to come out of the Motown catalog. We owe a lot of gratitude to Universal Group for these recordings!!
The Elgins anthologhy.......2007-06-07
I must say this is one of the best cd's to be released in this series
yet. I thought the "B" artist who had only 1 or 2 hits, maby had a hand
full of things in the vaults. My God, there are nearly 40 or so great
songs here. What an awsome surprise! Berry Gordy, you were really the
busy little bee. Then the other surprise on these cd's is what they
recorded versions of. Jerry Butler's "For your precious love"
James Brown's fabulous"It's a man's world" , just to mention a few.
The stero mix of the "Darling Baby" lp is something to listen to.
I will not list my favorite cuts, all I can say is that, if you
are truley a motown fan, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Any Whispers fan would love this collection; anyone that hasn't followed the Whispers wouldn't have a clue about the precious memories and legendary tracks that are contained herein. One of the best groups to sing on this planet. Anything that comes out of their mouths is worth listening to.
DISAPPOINTED.......2003-08-09
I have the Whispers cd that Baby Face produced and I was
expecting the anthology to be better. I was sadly mistaken
this cd is not worth the price and If I could this would
be returned. I can't say I have ever been so diaappointed.
Willing to trade for something else, but I can't send this
to anyone and have clear concious.
It's Excellent But Not Their Best . . ........2001-06-16
I've been following The Whispers for years and I know the selection of cuts on this CD are excellent BUT not their best. This CD is a must. I have been looking for The Whisper's CD for quite some time. This CD has so many song's on it's, it's unbelieveable. When I listen to it, it brings back so many memories. This is a must CD if you like listing to good R&B music from the 60's & 70's.
Nope, Nope, Nope!.......2000-08-30
Any Anthology that leaves out a classic like Chocolate Girl is not worth the plastic that it's burned on!

Marlena Shaw California Soul.......2004-06-10
Oh my god!I feel really ashamed because i have only just heard of Marlena Shaw!she is amazing! It all started when i went to Molokos in Cardiff and i heard California Soul.Ever since then ive been trying to find who invented this masterpiece. It is probably up there with one of my favourite songs ever,it just catches me,i love it.Can't wait to here her other creations!xxx
Aretha Franklin's favorite singer........2003-10-28
One of the great songs of any time from any genre, Marlena let's loose on Woman of the Ghetto. Sampled from djs all over the world, along with California Soul, the originals are perfection. Another favorite among her fans Go Away Little Boy is full of sass and wit. It is great listening pleasure from start to finish.
Before Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, there was Marlena Shaw.......2003-03-18
As much as I love Jill and Erykah, if Marlena Shaw were to drop an album today, it's no doubt that it would put these two artists' works to shame. Most of Shaw's albums weren't big sellers and some of them are even out of print, so if you want to get started on your search, begin with this collection. As with most "Best of Marlena Shaw" collections, "Yu-Ma/Go Away, Little Boy" appears on here, but other notables like "Could It Be You", "Feel Like Making Love", and a vocal version of the classic "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" are also here. For Gang Starr fans, "California Soul" will sound familiar because this was sampled in the group's 1990 song, "Check the Technique". Check this album out.

Marlena Shaw is something else. Her&Betty Wright put it down along with Millie Jackson telling it like it is on there Records.Marlena Shaw was the Erka Badu of Her time with real overal&Developed Soul. She just brought the House&Kitchen Sink at you on these songs.this collection is a Really good overview.

Admittedly expensive but worth every penny for the artistry you will hear before the last track with Phil Upchurch which to me is her finest moment. But not by much.

Legend of a Mott.......2004-07-16
`Legend of a Mind' is a collection of songs from bands between the years of 1968 and 1974 from the off-shoot record label of Decca Records, neatly called Deram. Deram Records was actually set up in 1966 by the suits at Decca, who had already made the cringe-worthy mistake of turning down the Beatles. They realized then that the young folk of the day did not only want to buy Englebert Humperdink records, but needed something with a bit of street cred that they just plain did not understand.
This was a lucky break for them. In the summer of 1967 the Beatles turned the rock world on its head with the release of `Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band', allowing all serious minded musicians to break out of the 4/4 structures of 3-minute songs. There were literally hundreds of bands out there wanting to sign up to a record company to get their sound out to an eager public; some with 2½ -minute songs of cleverness, others with 20-minute epics. Deram was keen to sign them all - the good and the bad - (How would they have known the difference?) and here, spread over three 77-minute discs, is a selection of arguably the best.
Some bands on this collection went on to be household names like Thin Lizzy, The Moody Blues, and Camel; some miraculously are still going on today in one form or another like Caravan, Savoy Brown, and Ten Years After; and some went on to become bigger and better things namely Giles, Giles & Fripp of course became King Crimson, who went on to be both household names and are still going strong today. After a fine career Trapeze gave us Mel Galley for Whitesnake; Dave Holland for Judas Priest; and Glen Hughes for Deep Purple, insuring gainful employment for the trio years after they bit the dust. Other bands like Black Cat Bones, Leafhound, and Egg gained legendary status years after they had disbanded.
Some bands were plainly a little too ordinary or too way out to make it. East Of Eden had a massive hit single with `Jig-a-Jig', which is included here, but their other material never quite lived up to their early hit, although after the band's demise violinist Dave Arbus turned up on the Who's Baba' O'Reiley playing the fiddle solo that brings the song to a rousing conclusion.
Others, alas, only lasted one album, but that is where you come across some unexpected delights. If you like heavy metal guitar riffing to bang your head to, then look no further than the eight minutes of T2's 'No More White Horses'.
How Aardvark missed the boat to rock superstardom will always be a mystery. I mean they even had the perfect name. When you walked down your local record store racks Aardvark's album must of been the first album you came across, they would of even been in front of Abba. The marvelously monickered `Once Upon A Hill/Put That In Your Pipe And Smoke It' is Aardvark's tour de force over ten minutes of keyboard mayhem that only Keith Emerson or Jon Lord could of equalled.
The reason that Clark-Hutchinson did not last long is evident in their sole contribution song title here.
It's quite fun just to read the names of the bands with the title of the song(s) they play and then to imagine the sound and see if you were correct.
The set comes in a psychedelic cardboard box with each C.D. in a full color replica of one of the albums from Deram. The 48-page booklet includes essays from the people at Deram, plus a full page devoted to each band and some very embarrassing photos from the era (stand up 'Mellow Candle'). At fourteen pounds and fifty pence, the price of a normal single CD, this box set is a real bargain. Whatever your taste you just have to like something.

Really cool survey of Decca Progessive bands of the 1970's.......2003-11-09
Overall, this is a very valid and useful collection of the some of the best progressive sounds Decca released during the early 1970's. Like UK EMI's "Harvest Festival", also essential, if you like this kind of music, then this is for you. However, a couple of interesting points: first, The Moody Blues' "Legend Of the Mind" is about as progessive as The Partridge Family was! A totally bad choice for the first track. Similarly, really interesting early progressive bands like ASHKAN and SAM APPLE PIE are completely missing from this collection. And, truthfully, some of the tracks selected are really quite medicore examples of this era...but, I guess that speaks to the whole progressive era....lots of good stuff, and some real pretentious clinkers.
All in all, a great set and the sound is first-rate.
.."Of course it was all different in MY day..".......2003-06-21
It seems about the right time for a re-appraisal of progressive rock.By "progressive"I mean the wild, unfettered music that appeared after "Sgt Pepper"not the narrow stream of latter day "prog" (ELP,Yes etc)
The years between 1967-75 produced some of the most audacious music ever made.Much of it appeared on the Deram/Nova label from the UK (alongside other "head" labels like Vertigo,Island,Dawn and Neon)and much of it is captured on this mind blowing box set.
Many of the names featured here would be familiar to the average rock fan of a certain age.The Moody Blues,Ten Years After,Thin Lizzy and Trapezes Glenn Hughes all rightly stake their claim in rock history and are well represented here.(Ten Years Afters album lenghth "Love Like a Man" is a highlight.
It is however the doomed obscurities herein the provide the revelations.
How about Bill Fays "Screams in the Ears",a piece of ornate orchestrated pop that would resonate strongly with fans of Nick Drake and Colin Blunstone?
..or Bulldog Breeds "Austin Osmanspare" a creepy bit of just too late psychadelia?
or T2s "No More White Horses",which mixes a pastoral vocal with tripped out gutar and slamming brass?
It goes on an on,obscure but ridiculously high quality music made with nothing other in mind than expression and creation.
One can scratch the ol' noggin and wonder what happened to acts like Zakkarias (Out-Tim Buckleys Tim Buckley)Clark Hutchinson (I too "wanna be stoned for the rest of my natural life"!)Khan (Steve Hillage..)and Egg who display the most ridiculously synchopated over the top playing on the set.
Also featured are a host of middle level Brit underground names like the truly wonderful Caravan (who couldn't love "Hello,Hello"?)the almost funky Keef Hartley and the ornate sound of Camel.
I'm lucky to own lots of this stuff in it's original form, but much of it is new to me and I'm glad to have it all in one place.
I'm not a nostalgist by any means (Ed Harcourt,Be Good Tanyas,Radiohead are current favourites)but nor do I think the magnificent hairy bands of the past need to wallow in obscurity.
Great Compilation of Decca/Deram Underground Scene 1967-75.......2003-05-05
I picked this up after reading about it in "Ice" magazine. This is a 3 cd import set which spotlights the underground scene at Decca records from 1967-75. The cuts are remastered and the sound is excellent. Many of the tracks are new to cd for the first time and the set includes 1 impressive previously unissued cut from Pete Brown which features Jeff Beck and Jack Bruce. The set also includes an impressive 48 page booklet with pictures of the bands, albums, and concert posters as well as a brief history of each band featured on the set.
The music ranges from jazzier work by the Johnny Almond Music Machine and Egg to blues rock from Ten Years After, Savoy Brown and Black Cat Bones. The Moody Blues are featured with two cuts from their psychedelic period including "Legend Of A Mind" which gave the set its name. Heavy material from the likes of Leafhound, T2, Clark-Hutchinson and early Thin Lizzy is also featured. "Freelance Friend" makes a case for Leafhound being one of the great lost heavy bands of the period. While the Thin Lizzy cuts "Whisky In A Jar" (covered by Metallica) and especially "The Rise And Dear Demise of the Funky Nomadic Tribes" feature the Hendrix derived playing of original guitarist Eric Bell. "Free To Be Stoned" from Clark-Hutchinson features some great guitar playing and sounds like an outtake from the Edgar Broughton Band. The End a band produced by Rolling Stone Bill Wyman is included with the great psychedelic track "Introspection - Part One". Future King Crimson members are present on the cut "Suite No. One" by Giles, Giles and Fripp. Progressive rock is not short changed as cuts from the underrated Camel, Curved Air with Sonja Kristina, and the Canterbury's Caravan are well chosen. Darryl Way's superior violin playing is featured in cuts by Curved Air and his own band Darryl Way's Wolf. Aardvark who released only one album sounds like they should have been bigger with the bombastic progressive rock track "Once Upon A Hill/Put That In Your Pipe And Smoke It". East of Eden mixes jazz, rock and folk on their two cuts including the non-lp single "Jig-A-Jig" and Granny's Intentions sound a bit like Jethro Tull. "The Witch" by the German band the Rattles is a single that combines their early R&B derived material with a more progressive vision. Guitarist Steve Hillage of Gong fame is featured on a psychedelic cut from his rare Khan album.
The great part about the set is that the tracks by the bands that are more obscure are for the most part just as good as the tracks from more well-known bands. It is also interesting that many of the bands featured here attempt to mix different genres of music. This set illustrates why this time period was arguably the most adventerous in the history of rock music. I highly recommend this set and if you become more interested in some of the bands featured here so much the better! I now wish they would compile an underground compilation box set for the Vertigo and Harvest labels.

Album Description
Kim Weston was one of Motown's most underrated songbirds, despite turning out classics such as 'Helpless' & 'Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)', she really didn't achieve the superstardom that she richly deserved. This double CD features many firsts, UK run stereo versions, first ever airings and a brace of alternative takes. 48 total tracks. Univesal. 2005.
Customer Reviews:
LEGENDARY MOTOWN DIVA~BRAVO KIM WESTON!!!.......2007-06-07
"A Thrill A Moment" is what this great legendary Motown Diva is for the lucky listener of this peerless collection of classic performances! Kim Weston technically is the greatest singer from the classic Motown Years but for some strange reason was not properly promoted although she is the duet partner with Marvin Gaye in the timeless classic "It Takes Two" which should have made Kim Weston a household name but maybe being married to the Vice President of Motown Records was a drawback as big ego's must have been raging when her husband decided to leave Barry Gordy and Motown Records...this great singer went on to record many classic recordings but seemed to be blackballed from the industry and her great work received no airplay. Without radio support a singer becomes lost and this was even true in the great musical sixties as Kim kept on recording masterworks that even to this day have not been released on compact disc and this is a sad commentary for the music industry which should have build it's house on talent and today would have been much stronger and probably would not have suffered major closures such as Tower Records...but thankfully from the British we have this incredible and brilliant double-disc delight with Kim Weston in prime form from her classic Motown days! Filled with many of the greatest burning tracks from those tremendous and wondrous Motown years, this is a magical musical feast for fans of this great fiery singer and fans of the Classic Sixties Motown years so do not miss out while this incredible Import Collection of masterful performances is available...soulful singing just does not get better than this and thank you Kim Weston!!! You are a truly incredible singer and performer and please come out wherever you are...talent like yours is needed today more than ever!!!
thrill a moment.......2007-05-09
kim weston was another of the mighty female vocal titans that got maligned when diana ross came through the hitsville door. though she wasn't a musician in the respects of a brenda holloway, she was a massively talented vocalist with a great range.
most of the tracks on this disc were not released until their inclusion on this collection. but time has righted the wrong and here is kim weston, alternately brassy, silky and smoky in good material like 'it should have been me', 'thrill a moment' and 'go ahead and laugh'. these three songs stick out in particular because of the background personnel. the supremes do back up on it should have (and diana is doing her damnedest to be heard), and i would swear ashford and simpson are helping her out on the other tracks. ashford's distinctive falsetto is very apparent. but it's good. and weston stands up to each setting like an r and b brunhilde.
Kim Weston.......2006-02-24
Kim was, is and will always be my favorite female singer. A fan for decades, I was extremely pleased with this anthology, which shows her inimitable honey-toned voice off to best advantage. Sure, not all of her Motown highlights are there, but the tracks included (and there are many) are nothing short of remarkable -- like the lady herself!
A MOTOWN MUST-HAVE.......2005-11-19
In a word, sublime. Kim Weston was Motown's greatest female singer and, if used properly, could have had a career like her contemporaries, Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick. Motown aficionados will want it for one track alone, YOUR WONDERFUL SWEET, SWEET LOVE. Yes, this is the same song that was an unsuccessful single from the Supremes' joyous FLOY JOY album in 1972. Kim's version was recorded in 1966 and, despite having hit written all over it, was never even released! Shameful, as the song is a knockout. Another unreleased gem is ANY GIRL IN LOVE (KNOWS WHAT I'M GOING THROUGH) which seems to have the same track as the Supremes' version from their I HEAR A SYMPHONY album. Of the 48 tracks, only 9 are repeated from Kim's GREATEST HITS & RARE CLASSICS collection.
Finally It's Happened for Kim!.......2005-11-08
All I can really say to get started, is to say FINALLY Kim Weston gets her due. After many other of her 2nd tier comrades for the Detroit label have been properly anthologized, she gets this great collection that avoids excellently duplication from her previous single disc compilations. Another blessing is the absolute lack of Marvin Gaye Duets! not to say I hate those, but it is great to see Mrs. Weston presented as the great SOLOIST she is.
Ok to actually get to the music. oh-mi0god what Music. I'm really starting to believe the rumours that her relationship with husband Mickey Stevenson did not help her release schedule. She went through 5 releases between 1963 thru 1965 that did not chart, despite excellent quality of each. The fact that there is such copious music of great quality that wasn't released is amazing. Early tracks like " I Know His Name(Only His Name)" which was also recorded at a much faster pace by The Velvelettes is given a tough Brill Building treatment not unlike Little Eva's "Keep Your Hands Off My Baby." It seems that from the start Motown did not know how to really market her, since all the recordings on the 2nd disc cover some pastiche of 1963-64 music."When We Get Together" seems like a lost Ruby & The Romantics album track(like their "Daydreaming"). "Build Him Up" seems like your typical Holland-Dozier-Holland girl group classic from 1963, but it displays some of Kim Weston's finest gospel belting towards the fade. Also throughout both discs you note that Mrs. Weston was handed more "adult" songs lyrically in comparison to her label mates. Also remarkable is the fact that so many of her songs weren't immediately passed to someone else for covering, if at all.
This set shows yet again how much female talent was wasted at Motown. In Mrs. Weston's case you cannot directly blame the Supremes however, since she signed a year ahead of any real success by that group. Given the tracks that dominate disc one she would have had one of the finer Motown Dance albums ever in 1965 had an actual album been planned. Beautiful tracks like "You Can Do It" and "I Don't Know If I'm Coming Or Going" are pure Motown graced with the warmth and sincerity not normally found in most dance music("You Can Do it" is particularly touching, one can see it as someone grieving even the death of a love one and learning how to live again...maybe I'm reading a bit too deeply, but that's how much emotion is dripping out of the song). I actually prefer Kim's version of "Hurt a Little Everyday" for it's lack of overdramatic histrionics musically (Not necessarily vocally) of Brenda Holloway's version. I can't exactly tell if The "Come and Get These Memories" track is the same used for "The Supremes A-Go-Go" in 1966, they seem similar. Also it's great not to have to listen to hissing, droning or poorly mixed bootleg tracks like "Any Girl In Love (Knows What I'm Going Through)," "Absent Minded Lover " and the outstanding "You Hit Me Where It Hurt Me" you can't really appreciate the greatness of that particular track until you've heard it in the Stereo mix heard here.
again the British Tamla Motown people give the people what they want, I dunno what to ask for next, I'm pretty sure they are digging for an all out Elgins or Tammi Terrell set.
