Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Raphael Saadiq has never been one to walk the safe, highly traveled R&B roads. While his compositions, dating back to his days leading the successful trio Tony Toni Tone, have always been of the smoothly palatable R&B variety, they have certainly been somewhat unorthodox, and there has always been a Prince-like unpredictability to Saadiq's career. As Ray Ray opens with a perfectly true-to-form audio "trailer," which fades into the groove-funk introduction to the lead character, "Ray Ray Theme." A wandering guitar enhances the ethereally beautiful ballad "I Know Shuggie Otis," and, on "Detroit Girl," Saadiq breaks with his Ray Ray character and throws in music that recalls the decades in between the '70s and early 2000s. Saadiq also cleverly brings together all of his musical projects, as Tony Toni Tone and Lucy Pearl join together on the catchy "Rifle Love." Raphael Saadiq is always willing to take chances, and usually, as on the captivating Ray Ray, his efforts bear sweet fruit. Sony. 2005.

A Musical Treat.......2006-01-08
"The true mission of the violin is to imitate the accents of the human voice, a noble mission that has earned for the violin the glory of being called the king of instruments." ~ Charles-Auguste De Bériot ~
Yehudi Menuhin and Stéphane Grapelli together had made some of the most beautiful music ever-recorded. And I believe that this is one of the many successful albums they recorded together. In this recording, both violinists have showed their excellent musicianship and interpretative eloquence as well, making it one of my most cherished CDs from my collection.
These are the main ingredients of a perfectly-made CD for your listening pleasure: mix violins, piano, bass and drums together, combine two terrific violinists, season with the best melodies in the 20s, 30s and 40s from Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. Add the musical talents of Nelson Riddle, Max Harris, Martin Taylor, Eddie Tripp, Alan Clare and the rest of the studio musicians. Now all you have to do is to sit back, relax and savor these stunning melodies coming from your CD player. Listen to it in full-volume and fill your music room with the sheer beauty of these classics.
One of my favorite musical instruments is violin. With its four strings, it gives a whole wide range of musical versatility and I simply love the fascinating sound it produces.
My personal highlights are the best tunes from Jerome Kern - "The Way You Look Tonight" (Nelson Riddle arranged this particular track and conducted the Woodwind and Brass section), "A Fine Romance," "Pick Yourself Up," "Why Do I Love You?" and "All The Things You Are."
My choices from Irving Berlin's gems are - "Isn't It A Lovely Day?" featuring the great artistry of Nelson Riddle in arranging and conducting, "Cheek To Cheek" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."
The Cole Porter repertoire represented his musical sophistication in "Night And Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Just One Of Those Things."
The choice cuts from the talented and creative team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart are "My Funny Valentine" and "Thou Swell."
Listening to this CD is so delectable and equivalent to having my favorite dessert - be it Tiramisu, New York Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Soufflé, Créme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate-Coated Strawberries! ;)
A musical treat.

Joy To The World........a joy indeed!.......2007-03-16
This wonderful CD has everything to celebrate the great joy of the Christmas season. Recorded in the early 1970's it still sounds as fresh and timeless as it did way back then.
The orchestrations are majestic and imaginative without being mushy or too symphonic in structure. The addition of the chorus in most of the carols is an added bonus. The singers and orchestra blend wonderfully without either dominating the other too much. The programme of selected songs is excellent and with some lovely orchestra only tracks the CD is not tiring to listen to creating a well balanced programme.
Maestro Eugene Ormandy conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra with great zeal and a passion for the music that is felt by the listener. The chorus master is the very talented Robert Page and the carols are arranged and orchestrated by the great Arthur Harris.
The sound quality is excellent and the CD has been beautifully remastered without any loss of crispness or dynamics. The stereo balance and instrument placement sound superb with the singers centre stage.
This is a remarkably good CD from the RCA Gold Seal range and is a must for lovers of really good seasonal music played with love and passion for the joys of the Christmas season.
Thank you for taking the trouble to read my review and I wish one and all much enjoyment from this lovely CD.
Happy listening!
If you like classical Christmas music, this is for you.......2007-01-13
A truly great collection of classical Christmas music. Highly recommended.
"Joy To The World . . . The Lord Has Come . . . And Heaven And Nature Sing".......2006-12-15
For those of you who, like me, love traditional and old-fashioned Christmas carols with a chorus and a full orchestra, this album is just a perfect listen this Yuletide season. It's always been a delight listening to this classic Christmas CD, "Joy to the World with Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra and Chorus." It creates a nostalgic feeling and an atmosphere of an old-fashioned Christmas that reminds me so much of the past Christmas celebrations I had with my late parents. This is the kind of Christmas music they so loved.
The Philadelphia Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of Robert Page performed ten of the nineteen tracks and The Philadelphia Orchestra performed the rest of the tracks without the Chorus under the baton of one of the most respected names in conducting and orchestration, Eugene Ormandy. Arthur Harris beautifully and traditionally arranged all the songs. This is one of the greatest Christmas albums ever recorded and a worthy addition to your Christmas collection.
The true essence of Christmas is captured by the artful blend of voices from the chorus combined with the sublime orchestration from the first carol, "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" to the last piece, Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah."
Each and every track is a highlight and sacredly performed. My top favorites are "Silent Night," Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," Tchaikovsky's "Waltz of the Flowers" from "The Nutcracker," "Angels We Have Heard On High," "Away In A Manger," "What Child Is This? (Greensleeves), and "Joy To The World."
"Joy to the world
The Lord has come
Let earth receive her King
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing."
Joyfully recommended!
Christmas music done in Ormady's rich "Philadelphia Sound".......2004-12-04
"Joy to the World" has Eugene Ormandy with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Chorus providing a rich selection of Christmas songs, both classical and traditional, arranged by Arthur Harris. It is the former that are most impressive, although there are fewer of them, starting with Mendelssohn's "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and Tchaikovsky's "Waltz of the Flowers" from "The Nutcracker," then ending with Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desire," and the "Pastoral Symphony" and "Hallelujan Chorus" from Handel's "Messiah."
Eugene Ormandy (born Jenö Blau in Budapest) was one of the most famous of the popular American conductors of the 20th century, known best for his long time relationship with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Originally gaining public notice with the orchestra when he served as a last-minute replacement for an ill Arturo Toscanini in 1931, Ormandy would serve as Musical Director in Phialdelphia from 1938 until 1980. Under his baton the Philadelphia Orchestra became known for its warm tones, textured romantic "Philadelphia Sound," which is well represented on this Christmas album. I always thought Ormandy's interpretation of Rachmaninoff was particularly strong, although I do not know enough about classical music to articulate a coherent defense of that position beyond noting that when Vladimir Horowitz played Rachmaninoff's Third Concerto on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his Carnegie Hall debut, he picked Ormandy as the conductor of the orchestra that night.
There is over an hour's worth of music here for you to enjoy if you like more of the classical approach to your Christmas music. But Ormandy's work is always marked by an ability to bring out the emotions of music being played by a symphonic orchestra. That is why the standout tracks here are "The Little Drummer Boy," "I Wonder as I Wander," and "What Child Is This?" You would not normally think of these songs as working as well song by a chorus that by a single individual, but this album will get you to rethink your position. In terms of choirs at Christmas I still have a preference for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Ray Conniff Singers (I embrace the extremes), but in terms of listening to an orchestra play Christmas music, this is as good as it gets.
A Timeless Christmas Classic.......2003-12-08
I'm a lover of traditional Christmas music and I've acquired about 20 CDs of it. There's nothing my family likes better in December than putting on some good Christmas music and getting in the mood for the season, hearing once again the old favorites you've known since childhood. Of all the Christmas music CDs I've tried, I have two desert-island favorites, the two I always reach for first. This is one of them. I think it's one of the greatest recordings of traditional Christmas music ever made. The arrangements (by Arthur Harris) are joyous, beautiful, and soul-stirring; the performances are heartfelt and magnificent. If you can listen to this CD and not feel filled by the Christmas spirit, you must be (a) named Ebeneezer Scrooge, or (b) deaf. This one is a timeless Christmas classic, not to be missed. Warmest recommendation.

Writer/director Robert Altman's predilection for complex character studies has focused a jaundiced eye on everything from Nashville to the fashion industry. Here the director explores the interactions of a contemporary ballet troupe, set to a diverse pop/classical score that's anything but predictable. The dominant theme that runs throughout is the American songbook staple "My Funny Valentine," given four distinctly different idiomatic turns here by Elvis Costello, Chet Baker, the Kronos Quartet, and the piano/cello duet of Marvin Laird and Clay Ruede. The remaining source tracks range from the expected classical roots (Bach and Saint-Saens) to Twin Peaks vocal icon Julee Cruise and the world music of Light Rain, but it's left to veteran songwriter/composer/arranger Van Dyke Parks to weave those disparate influences together in his orchestral score, a task the included excerpts argue he's accomplished with typical wit and considerable charm. --Jerry McCulley

Good CD.......2007-01-09
If you have seen the movie, this CD includes all the songs from all the dances in the movie. I'm a dance teacher, and this CD has been used in my classes many, many times.
Could have been great.......2005-02-14
This CD follows the all-to-common practice of presenting a dozen of the "most marketable" pieces, leaving off the more unique music. Where is the great electronic composition from the beginning, the wonderful practice piano music, and the other instrumental selections? A complete soundtrack, given courage and dedication by the CD producers, would be more unique, engrossing, and worth owning than this selection.
where is the electronic song.......2004-11-04
The sound track is great... but where is the song at the beggining of the movie? That strange electronic song? If anyone knows who did that song please email me! Thomasology@yahoo.com
"My Funny Valentine takes center stage ~ Rodgers & Hart".......2004-03-03
From director Robert Altman we have the ultimate ballet film "The Company", featuring Nerve Campbell, Malcolm McDowell, James Franco, Barbara Robertson, William Dick and actual members of Joffrey Ballet. Very effective camera work captures the poise and brilliance of the ensemble during their key ballet performances.
One of my all time favorite songs by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart "MY FUNNY VALENTINE", is presented in four different performances ~ in this order we have Elvis Costello, Chet Baker (a classic interpretation by a very talented young artist at the peak of his career), Marvin Laird (piano) and Clay Ruede (cello), Kronos Quartet ~ brings to the fold popular and classical performers ~ each approaching this standard cue with all melodic magic they can muster.
Stand outs in my book is "CURTAIN CALLS" and "BLUE SNAKE & ZEBRAS", both composed by Van Dyke Parks with extraordinary orchestration and counter parts ~ "THE WORLD SPINS", from composers Angelo Badalmenti and David K. Lynch, performed by Julee Cruise is intoxicating and thrlling, with no hangover ~ let's mention "MENUETT" (J.S. Bach) and "APPALACHIA WALTZ" (Mark O'Connor), performed by the one and only renown cello player who is recognized world wide, Yo-Yo Ma ~ "RABEKIN" (Russ Guthier), wonderful cue that rings so true for the film, a meaningful fantasy instrumental, blending Middle Eastern rhythms from world fusion group, Light Rain...gotta love it!

Music from Humphrey Bogar Movies.......2007-06-27
I was disappointed. I thought I would be getting a CD of full length themes from his movies but the CD is exactly what it says. It is from the actual films, in sections and pieces. I can't say it was misrepresented so I guess I was at fault. But I am sorry I bought it.
Simply the original.......2007-06-19
As the previous reviewer rightly pointed out, these are the original recordings from the era the films were made. And yes, the sound is completely different from what we are used to hear when we are turning the CD player on: it's mono, it's partially unsteady and some of the pieces suddenly fade. BUT, it's the REAL thing and it transports the charms and the charisma, inherent to the original ONLY.
Those who prefer the flawless technical perfection of a re-recording better should save their money. But for those who love the movies and their genuine sound, should be perfectly pleased with this release.
not the stuff dreams are made of.......2007-01-03
most of the tracks on this cd are available elsewhere, but what prompts me to give this a low review is the quality of the recording. some of them sound like they were taped off of a tv set showing a warbly print. you can do better elsewhere.

Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Album Description
From recent press clips: - All Access Magazine voted Wilson "Best Songwriter" in 2003, an honor that thrilled Wilson. "It was so wonderful to think that people get really close and listen to the words," Wilson says. "It's more exciting than saying best band or best singer. Songwriting is what makes the music industry so special. People find a song they want to listen to over and over. I fall in love with songs all the time." - For the first track, "Black Coffee At Sunrise," Wilson read an article about Hank Williams, Sr. that stated how he would tour America in big Cadillacs, traveling from gig to gig, running them into the ground. Then they would buy a new one. They'd have a convoy. "This was pre-Elvis. I was thinking that Hank would be up all night trying to get to the next gig in his big Cadillac. Those Fifties Caddys with the giant fins and huge trunks would hold all their gear. I wrote this song, just thinking about what it would be like to tour with Hank." - "Cruisin' The Coast" is an instrumental guitar song that captures the amazing experience of driving the Pacific Coast Highway on the California coastline. - Wilson's guitar style and songwriting chops are entirely his own, a joyful and invigorating mix of blues-infused rock that is reminiscent of Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore, without ever sounding derivative or falling into cliches. As a songwriter, Wilson is a fine storyteller and gifted wordsmith, crafting solid songs that compliment his guitar style without intruding. An enormous and impressive debut, Brad Wilson, the album, does an admirable job introducing Brad Wilson, the artist, a little known, but nevertheless major talent, with a bright future ahead of him.

Unsung Guitar Hero.......2006-06-19
If this doesn't make you hit the road and get at ticket, then you are musically dead from the neck up. This man is huge, and why he is not more visible on the guitar screen is beyond me.
I have his work with STONE, and when I saw this was out via Vintage Guitar magazine review, I thought to myself, "Self, you need to hurry and get this".
He does it all, with style, flare, and downright guts. You feel the sweat from the speakers.
Five of Five stars!
Hey Brad, come to Corpus Christi, and Rock the House!

Full Throttle Solid Rockin' Blues.......2004-12-16
From the energetic opening track 'Black Coffee' all the way to the easy rocking 'Southern Cali Girl', this CD really showcases Brad's writing and performing skills. Influences from 50's rockabilly to contemporary straight ahead blues make this a very enjoyable CD. The blend of fine harmonies and blistering leads makes for a very balanced listening experience! This is a must have for anyone's library!

Michael Mann's warts-'n'-all biopic of three-time heavyweight boxing champ Muhammad Ali spans the most triumphant and turbulent decade of the legend's career. But like many a film marketing plan, its first soundtrack release seemed more concerned with selling CDs to those less familiar with Ali--and oddly, Mann's powerful film itself--than with accurately documenting the film's true musical soul. This second volume corrects that misstep, collecting much of Lisa Gerrard's and previous collaborator and former Dead Can Dance sideman Pieter Bourke's atmospheric, largely electronic underscore as well as an eclectic, less obviously pop-conscious slate of songs and music by Chicago bluseman Mighty Joe Young, nouveau R&B drum/bass/vocal merchants Dungeon East and Whild Peach, trans-genre cellist Martin Tillman, and Malian vocal legend Salif Keita. It's a release that variously seems better attuned to the director's own adventurous tastes in film scoring, more emblematic of Ali's own complex character and international legacy--and, more importantly, an ambience-rich document of the film's true musical and artistic spirit. --Jerry McCulley

Magic moments.......2005-08-05
As usual, Michael Mann proves to have very good taste when it comes to the soundtrack for his movies. Forget about the 1st ALI CD that was released, this one is the real soundtrack for the movie. I agree that I really miss Salif Keita's "Tomorrow" but the other song featured here measures up to it. NOW YOU MUST LISTEN TO THE FIRST TRACK CAREFULLY. This piece of music is heard during the first fight in the movie, and though this is a shorter version on the CD, it is a genuine gem. The drums are totally mad and make you wonder how many hands the drummer had. Also when the bass guitar comes in, followed by the Hammond organ, it simply drives me mad to the point I sometimes listen to this track up to 10 times in a row when I drive to work.
almost there.......2002-04-23
I am excited to buy this CD to get the music of Lisa Gerrard and Pieter Bourke - the real musical stars of this film - for their excellent, emotional and heavily memorable score. However I am sorry that the Serif Keita track "Tomorrow" - which is easily the most pivitol musical scene in the film, was not included on this collection and was rather fed to the "less carings" on the "STAR" soundtrack #1. I would have loved to have its compliment here, where all the other emotional tracks have been comiled. But otherwise I am glad to see thios music worthy of its own release... because it IS. This is the real soundtrack to the film, ya'll. Don't miss it.
Ali Score.......2002-03-13
This is the soundtrack that should have been released instead of the first CD. Although at least you don't have to put up with any R. Kelly tracks this time. As a bonus you get Lisa Gerrard and Pieter Bourke's excellent score, the only downside is you don't get the track See The Sun featured on the first release. A definite purchase.

Album Description
The liner notes alone are worth the price of admission. It's clear that Jamie Klimek and his Mirrors are as gleefully damaged or as bubbly brutal as anything that came out of 70's CLE - if all bands were like this, the world would be much better off. Klimek sounds like the backwash from a McDonald's Milkshake - unhealthy & sweet (that's a compliment). We're as excited as pie here. Finally, this record is getting a proper release and hopefully it won't put us out of business; the last label to put this out back in 1989 went under within a week of the release date, having shipped a precious few copies of the albumjust another nail in the series of nails that have kept the Mirrors and their Cleveland brethren 6 feet under ground all these years. ROIR's "Remodeled Coffin" comes complete w/ 13 bonus tracks culled from the "Nail" sessions and from sessions for a never-released second LP.
The lone review for Mirrors' Another Nail in the Coffin (Resonance, 1989): "Premier power poppers
tumbling all bright and shiny out of the speakers, the Mirrors snap and shimmer through wrapped-up bundles of clever pop ditties, without holding back or playing suave and mature, ripping into hooks and harmonies as energetically as 19 year-olds
and while occasionally dizzying and confusing, the Mirrors' pell-mell approach
can also take one's breath away." - CMJ, Nov. `91

Customer Reviews:
great work from Jim Steinman.......2006-06-16
Jim Steinman, known for his operatic-style rock music (Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler, etc.) has shown a more classic style of him in this one-of-a-kind musical. He takes several styles from the Civil War era and twists them with modern musical treatments.
You can hear many bits and pieces of music used in this album that Steinman uses much later in some of his rock songs, such as the intro to Making Love Out of Nothing at All, chorale phrases from The Future Ain't What it Used to Be and many others.
If you are a Steinman fan, this is a must!! Ray Earl Fox does a great job with the lyrics and they compliment the music to a tee.
Loved it so much I got the rights!.......2004-05-26
Upon hearing this musical I loved it so much I went out and got the rights to direct it onstage this October in Cincinnati! I was always a fan of Jim Steinman's music, but I now also have a great respect for the lyrics of Ray Fox. Fox is a wordsmith much in the tradition of Stephen Sondheim, with intricate wordplay and quick patter. I would suspect that it was his early work with Fox on this project that led Steinman himself into developing into a world class, phrase twisting. lyricist himself. And of course you have Steinman's great ear for melody, but with a much different feel than his Rock music. A great lost treasure of American theater (come see it in October!)
The Confidence Man.......2004-04-02
One of the undiscovered classics of the century. I hope to produce the first Australian production in November 2005. This show has a long and winding history, but I'll leave all that to the liner notes. Ray Errol Fox is one of the greatest lyricists of all time. I have never seen another talent like him - expect for Rupert Holmes - and these are the men I hold among my chief inspiration. Jim Steinman, the composer, whom many of you will remember from Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell has actually re-used many of these tunes in his subsequent projects. If you want the original version of his closing song from Pandora's Box, listen to Track One. "Milady" and "Something of this Masquerade may Follow" were re-used for TANZ DER VAMPIRE. Thank God this was finally released. It's a beautiful, heroic and courageous, discovered-at-last masterpiece of American musical theater.
The Confidence Man.......2004-03-07
When a friend gave me "The Confidence Man" as a Christmas gift, he advised me that I would be in for a treat. I was somewhat skeptical since I had never heard of it, but since it was based on a Herman Melville novel, I was intrigued. And it had music by Jim Steinman. I liked the story, of course, and the music, but it was the lyrics (by Ray Eroll Fox) that captivated me. They are witty, literate and consistently surprising. I find something new to admire every time I listen. Anyone into American musical theater shouldn't be without this one!
