5 out of 5 stars Hidden treasure.......2007-01-04

Long out of print and unavailable to those of us who live across the pond, this member of the fabled British blues explosion has sadly been a mere rumor to many of us with a passion for the genre. As I eagerly ripped open the package and read through producer Mike Vernon's nostalgic and glowing thoughts about the band and the product, I began to salivate in anticipation to hear from the unit that the erstwhile producer refered to as "... the most exciting of the bands on the circuit." As the circuit refered to included such renowned stalwarts as fellow Blue Horizon lablemates Fleetwwod Mac, Kim Simmond's hard driving Savoy Brown, and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (who at the time featured a young, pre-Rolling Stones, Mick Taylor) I was skeptical, but anxious to witness the product for myself.

Although the pecking order for one's own personal favorites among the tribes is a matter of personal choice, I can concur that the esteemed Mr. Vernon (who was as close as can be to all of the principals and a great many more) presents a valid entry into this point of contention. Having no desire to rate my family members, works of art, or beloved rock/blues bands against others of seemingly equal or superior footing, I'll add only that Chicken Shack could hold their own with anyone's band of bluesmen, at any time.

Discover for yourselves the powerful brush strokes of Stan Webb's lusty guitar and the piano and vocal styling's of the young Christine Perfect. Webb, like Peter Green, the aforementioned Simmonds, Eric Clapton, and a host of other British Blues greats is a glorious student the American urban blues scene. The influences of Albert and B.B. King, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy...lay the foundation for the then young bluesman's stinging, note-squeezing style. I felt like I'd found a hidden treasure when I plunked down a few well-spent dollars to mine this nugget. Hear for yourselves Christine McVee when she was Perfect (pun intended) and get a sense of the feeling behind all of those impassioned ballads that she later created with the more famous version of Fleetwood Mac. It was the blues, man, and it wasn't and isn't soley the property of the boys.

I urge you to part with a few of your hard-earned bucks and add this little treasure to your own private chest. Just another piece of the puzzle, but a piece that neatly fits in it's place.

3 out of 5 stars Christine is perfect but Stan sings like a duck.......2006-12-28

I may reduce this cd on my ipod to the tracks that Christine Perfect sings. Stan Webb's voice is as annoying as Chris Farlow's. Sometimes his guitar salvages a track, but then he comes back to sing again. Not enough Christine Perfect to salvage the release, but it sure is good to hear her before her California dreaming became a reality.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the price.......2006-12-07

I was reluctant to cough up $35, but I am very satisfied with my purchase. These cds are further proof the Brits grasped and appreciated our indigenous blues masters better than most stateside whiteboy blues bands. I say "further" proof because bands such as the Bluesbreakers and early Fleetwood Mac proved the same thing. Stan Webb is up there with the very best of the young blues guitar players of the time and it is really cool to hear Christine Perfect [McVie] add so much to some of these sessions. The remastering of these recordings is excellent. Much thanks to Mike Vernon. Note: Cd 3 veers off into rock which is not nearly as stellar as the music on the previous 2 cds.

5 out of 5 stars Some Other Time.......2006-03-29

For my money -- and it WAS my own $$ that bought these, despite already owning these tracks in inferior CBS Germany & BGO pressings or self-made LP dubs -- Chicken Shack were quite possibly the best British blues band, ever, competing for the title with Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. Certainly when they were hitting on all cylinders they bowed to no one.

As Mike Vernon says in the extensive liners, "I wish to go on record as having always thought that the Shack were deserving of far greater acclaim than they actually managed to realise. That they were unable to come up with anything to match either "Black Magic Woman" or "Albatross" in terms of sales is a failure -- if indeed it could be considered to be such -- due to the greater street credibility of Fleetwood Mac rather than Stan's apparent inability to write a so-called hit song."

And this boxed set finally presents the evidence. After years of shameful industry neglect -- hence the homemade LP dubs -- it's a privilege indeed to be able to fork out a few shekels for the COMPLETE Blue Horizon sessions: four LPs (in their original running order, minus the goofball narration on #2[!]) plus four singles (one unreleased) making a sizable legacy, 3 hrs & 17 minutes of unadulterated rapture. Vernon mentions a couple half-finished tracks, and 2 or 3 others tragically erased in the days when tape was a major expense for the struggling label, but what's here is the cream de la creme, and should make amends for the long winter. Come into the shack and get warm with the blues.
