About the Artist
Born in Mancos, Colorado, Jaye P. Morgan began her musical career at the early age of three while traveling and performing with her musical family. Then known as little Mary Morgan, she toured the country with "The Morgan Family", which consisted of five boys, two girls, and two very proud parents. By 1945, the family had settled full time in the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles and Mary Morgan resumed her normal classroom schedule but continued to perform with local bands and during school assemblies.
While attending high school she was given the nickname of "J.P. " in reference to the legendary financier John Pierpont Morgan and due in part to her role as class treasurer. In 1950, she landed a spot as female vocalist with the Frank DeVol Orchestra and performed with the band for three years while perfecting her craft and gaining additional exposure. DeVol liked the idea of the lofty name and convinced her to permanently become known as "Jaye P. Morgan". She soon was making records under Frank DeVol's direction for a small label known as Derby Records. She had two hits in 1953 on Derby Records, "Just A Gigolo" followed by "Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries." Jaye P.'s recording of "Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries" was her very first recording to bring her national exposure and greater things were about to unfold.
Jaye P. moved to New York in 1954 to become a regular on the CBS daytime variety program "The Robert Q. Lewis Show" and was the featured vocalist on "Stop The Music" hosted by Bert Parks. Soon thereafter, she was quickly signed to a recording deal with RCA Victor and in 1955 Jaye P. had five hit singles all in one year, including "That's All I Want From You" (#5 on the charts), "The Longest Walk" (#6), "Danger! Heartbreak Ahead" (#12), "If You Don't Want My Love" (#12), and "Pepper-Hot Baby" (#14).
She went on to record many more popular songs during that decade, including "Chee-Chee-oo-Chee" with Perry Como, "Mutual Admiration Society" with country singer Eddy Arnold, and "My Bewildered Heart", "Not One Goodbye," "Sweet Lips," "Play For Keeps," "Johnny Casanova," "Just Love Me," "I Thought It Was Over," "You, You Romeo," "Take A Chance," and "Stardust," among many others.
Her success as a recording artist also made her a star on the newly-evolving medium of television, where she was a regular performer on "The Perry Como Show," "The Jackie Gleason Show," "The Pat Boone Show," "The Ed Sullivan Show," "The Steve Allen Show" and "The Vic Damone Show" among other top musical variety programs and specials.
By 1956 Jaye P. even had her own television show, appropriately named "The Jaye P. Morgan Show." The show was a summer replacement for Eddie Fisher's "Coke Time" on NBC and Jaye P. was joined in her performances by her brothers, Charlie, Bob, Dick and Duke.
By this time Jaye P. Morgan was a national hit and her popularity demanded an ever-increasing schedule of personal appearances in the top nightclubs and performing venues in this country. During the late 1950's, she and her brothers performed a regular schedule on the nightclub circuit as "Jaye P. Morgan & The Morgan Brothers."
Starting in 1959, Jaye P. began recording for MGM Records and scored hits with "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" and "Miss You" in early 1959, and followed up with "I Walk the Line" in 1960. Soon branching out into acting, she made her legitimate musical theatrical debut in 1960 with a stock version of "Annie Get Your Gun," quickly followed in 1961 with a production of "Guys and Dolls" with co-stars Alan King and Tony Martin.
As she relocated to the west coast, Jaye P. began acting more on television programs during the 1960's, including appearances on "General Electric Theatre," "The Joey Bishop Show," "The Danny Thomas Show," "My Three Sons," "The Eleventh Hour," and "The Outsiders." She continued to enjoy lead roles in summer stock with such shows as "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," and co-sta
