Caravan In Its Heyday.......2007-01-23
Caravan was likely the most creative band to come out of the Canterbury UK music scene in the 1960s and 70's. I've been a fan of them for more years than I want to think about. I recently found out about this live performance and grabbed it when I had the chance. I was not disappointed, in fact I was amazed by this high energy performance. Recorded in 1974 (not too long after Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night was released), right before a North America tour, this concert captures Caravan at their best. From the opening notes of Memory Lain, Hugh/Headloss through Hoedown this CD is a work of joy. And the interaction between the band and the audience is also quite fun, especially on the encore song, Hoedown.
I'd forgotten for example what a great great song Virgin On the Ridiculous was (played it a handful of times when I was a college radio DJ long ago). And I discovered The Love In Your Eye (an awesome 15 minute long piece). The eight or nine minute A Hunting We Shall go (featuring 3 or 4 minutes of Dave Sinclair's haunting organ) is exquisite. And of course Caravan's opus on this live CD is For Richard. Another beautiful long song, of course Caravan was known for quite a few long songs in their heyday (Nine Feet Underground comes to mind among others).
This concert was originally recorded with the intent of providing US radio stations with live Caravan in conjunction with their 1974 US tour. However, only some of it saw the light of day until this 2002 release.
If you're a Caravan fan (or even if you're not and want to know what "all the fuss is about,"), buy this CD if you haven't already. It captures Caravan at their peak.

Worth the price, though high, for Space Truckin alone plus.........2004-02-19
This reissue, from Japan, of the Classic 1974 Deep Purple Mark III release is pricey, no doubt, but well worth it for Space Truckin', previously unheard. The interpolation of both "High Ball Shooter" and "Child In Time", though very briefly for both, proves the band keeps in touch with their past. The band rocks, and although purists would contend that the truly "classic" versions are from Machine Head and Made In Japan (with Ian Gillan, Mark II lineup, which they are) the combination of Hughes and Coverdale does a fine job covering the song; along with Blackmore's guitar, Lord's organ, and Paice's drums. It provides a nice "showcase" for all of the band. As well as the other tracks, the inclusion of this previously unheard of (outside of Japan, probably) track is absolute genius. For the "true" Deep Purple fan, no version of "Space Truckin'", or any of the other classic Purple hits, is "too long". It's a flat out, straight ahead, "jam" for the most part. The only, and I mean the only, criticism I have is that the booklet inside the double cd, gatefold, cover and packaging, is that there wasn't an "English" translation of the notes in the booklet. The only parts I could "make out" were the names "Deep Purple"; Elf, Rainbow, and the song titles. Thank God the lyrics were in English. Other than that, it's worth the price. [As a point of reference for newer Deep Purple fans, High Ball Shooter is found in the original on the Stormbringer release and Child In Time, of course, is on In Rock, Made In Japan, and other releases]. Deep Purple will, along with Black Sabbath, and others of the times, forever freakin' rock!. [Got to keep it "polite" you know, or they won't publish it.]
space trucking as a bonus track.......2003-09-04
I have bought another japanese cd version in 1990 without space trucking on the bonus track. This double cd set is including long 30 minutes track "Space trucking". The other songs remain the same. Mark III line up with Coverdale and Hughes was on the roar at that time. Need I say more?

Customer Reviews:
The Great KING CRIMSON.......2005-10-29
Thirteen years after I snapped this box set up on its initial release, I still listen to it on a regular basis. These performances sound so good, it is hard to believe that they were recorded way back in '73-'74 ... They certainly blow away any other live recordings I know of from any band prior to 1975.
Some may object to the inclusion of several versions of certain tracks, such as Easy Money, but for the most part each version is so distinctive as to warrant its inclusion. The two versions of "Fracture," for example, really illustrate the band's philosophy of never playing a song - even a meticulously composed and arranged piece - the same way twice.
This collection also includes several "blows," as they used to refer to the group improvisations which became a King Crimson trademark during the early-mid 70's. Some of these, such as "Providence" and "We'll Let You Know," would be included on KC studio albums of the period. It's a treat to be able to hear them in their original context.
If you are a fan of the "Lark's Tongues / Starless / Red" period King Crimson, then you MUST HAVE THIS. Progressive Rock was never any better.
Oh yeah, the packaging is top-notch, and the book contains a plethora of information: commentary by all four members, extensive Robert Fripp diaries, period reviews ... just a wealth of interesting info.

it's much cheaper from the source.......2005-10-20
Yes, this is a terrific set, if you happen to be a fan of the 1973-74 lineup of King Crimson. What needs to be said has already been said by other reviews here.
However, people are asking way to much money for this as a used item. Robert Fripp has gained control of all KC past masters, and this set is available at the official KC website for a more reasonable price, and brand new at that.
Best of the '73-'74 band, who said live albums suck?.......2004-06-25
By turns delicate, furious, jazzy, introspective, and monstrous. The power of the band that was hinted at on L.T.I.A., Red and Starless and Bible Black really comes through on this monster box-set. Almost every song is served better by the live recording. The playing is more direct, heavy, heady, and emotional. The solos are more evocative not to mention incredible. John Wettons' vocals are more impassioned.
Excellent guitar playing by Fripp. The man absolutely smokes when he wants to. He plays beautiful melody lines, funky chordal improv, ripping solos, and sometimes atonal free-rock guitar skronk. The rythym section of John Wetton on bass and Bill Bruford's drums is huge, creative and loud. David Cross on violin, mellotron and electric piano is really suprising. I've always thought him something of a lightweight, but his playing is quite good throughout and very creative on the improvised pieces.
Ah, the improvs, they're the real treat with this boxed set. For the first time you get to hear the '73 - '74 Crimson really stretch out into uncharted territory. I read that Crimson were an incredible improvising band but since few of their improvs ever made it to their albums, I'd had to take the reviewers word for it.
The improvs are astonishing in their variety. Daniel Dust is quite pleasant and mellow, sounding almost like an exceptionally melodic acoustic outing by the Grateful Dead?!?, (except with violin and a certain crim sensibility) Other improvs sound like Stravinsky, as played by Slayer while being directed by Sun Ra. Elements of classical, free rock, jazz, space, metal, whatever... You get to hear how good this band really was at walking a tightrope without a net, amazing band.
If you like the '73, '74 band , you'll love this CD boxed set. When I first bought it back in '92 I played it for two weeks straight. Buy it before it goes out of print again, you won't be sorry.
Still Available.......2004-04-22
I thought I should add that this item still is in print and lists for $63. Check out www.disciplineglobalmobile.com for any hard to find KC live material.
Classic collection captures KC over span of performances.......2003-11-03
Featuring the classic 1973 - 1974 line up featuring John Wetton, Robert Fripp, Bill Brufford and David Cross, this 4 CD set focuses on the quartet at their peak. Since the quartet only had two albums out at the time, to some fans this might seem like overkill but with variations in performance (and a couple of earlier classic Crimson tracks sneaking in periodically during the performances), this great overview allows fans to hear the power of this edition of KC.
The Great Deceiver is a glimpse of a great band in top form. While some of the improvs are acquired taste (and might not be of interest to all fans), the bulk of the material covered here is powerful and well played. It's a pity that this great boxed set is no longer in print as it's an example of what boxed sets should be about; more than a snapshot of a band during various phase of its life. This captures the 73-74 edition of KC in the prime of its life.
