Customer Reviews:
A great album!.......2007-06-27
Described by some as having a more "psychedelic sound," I think this is one of The Cult's best albums. The songs have a somewhat esoteric and ethereal thing about them. My favourite? "The Phoenix." It has such a driven feeling to it. "Brother Wolf, Sister Moon" is haunting and austere. Ian Astbury's performances are always excellent, and the musicianship is right on par.
There was more to the 80's than U2..........2006-07-03
As a longtime U2 fan, I believed that there was precious little else in the mid-80's. But this CD proved me wrong. While this is clearly an 80's production with all the sheen of the era, these songs are far stronger and diverse in scope. Not a bad song on the disc either. "She Sells Sanctuary" was the biggest hit (and still gets airplay!), but in reality most of the songs are even better.
Buy this CD, and forget about all the weak, contrived crap the 80's usually gave us. And give your U2 CD's a rest...
As the wall gets taller as you get smaller yeayah!.......2006-05-20
Watching Jimmy Kimmel Live recently reminded me of this album and the Cult (They performed "She sells sanctuary" on his show about a week ago.) In 1987, a buddy of mine had seen them backing up Billy Idol in support of the "Electric" album. My friend couldn't stop talking about how great this band was (they apparently destroyed the set after their "set" and had a remake of Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild"), well the next day, my friend bought "Electric" and forced me to listen, and frankly, I have been hooked ever since.
"Love" is a "modern rock" classic (note, I said "Modern" Rock classic, and not "Rock" classic, fans of Zepplin, the Doors, the Stones etc, need not apply to this genre of music, 'modern' rock is a space reserved for the likes of The Cure, The Smithereens, U2 (pre-"Joshua Tree"), Jesus and the Mary Chain, Siouxxe and the Banshees, etc...) in that vein, Love helped define an era of modern rock music, in fact "She Sells Sanctuary" literally powered the summer of 1985.
If you're looking for an album to have a serious retrospect of modern rock from the 1980's, your collection needs to start with Love. It's a sure-fire can't miss album that still sounds fresh today... Love rules!
Rare Peak for a Band and Its Era.......2006-04-22
The Cult may be little more than a footnote now, but for a brief time in the mid-1980s (specifically the time it took to record, release and support this album) the genre-confused British rock band looked set to rival acts like U2 in quality, if not necessarily mass-market sucess, and add some much-needed gems to what was already a rapidly-declining contemporary music scene. LOVE, alas, was to be the only such highlight in the group's career, but it was and remains an extremely bright one.
Having cut its teeth as a better-than-average (though still largely undistinguished) Goth band with the negligible 1984 LP DREAMTIME, the Cult retained a bit of Goth's droning mordancy and eye-linered melodrama for the follow-up while abandoning its diffidence, monotony and silliness. Musically, LOVE is a bracing and ceaselessly inventive marriage of psychedelic swirl and new wave kick, with elliptical hippie lyrics from lead singer Ian Astbury on top and alternating gotta-dance/gotta-drink beats on the bottom to help maintain this delicate balance of styles throughout. The opening smash of "Nirvana" - a song far better than anything the as-yet-unformed band of that name would ever record - sets the pace, with Billy Duffy's glistening guitar work echoing against Astbury's arch calls for dancefloor salvation. "Big Neon Glitter" pairs post-U2 martial drums with effects-laden guitars - and the best scream on the album - to create a tune at once doomy and finger-popping. The title track slithers along sinuously, and things slow down even more for "Brother Wolf, Sister Moon," a mini-epic whose naive ruminations on Native American mythology somehow manage (like just about everything else on LOVE) to work. "Rain" is a rouser, an unstoppable up-on-your-feet single with the whole band - and its vision - in top form. "Phoenix" opens with an extended tribute to Jimi Hendrix from Duffy, whose wah-wahing skills prove impressive indeed. "Hollow Man" may be the album's weakest song, but it's still far from bad. The flower power sentimentality of "Revolution" is a lot more effective, though - Astbury's moving lyrics sit beautifully upon their meditation cushion of crystalline guitar strokes and chorus vocals. "She Sells Sanctuary," another single, provides a final and very welcome foot in the rump before "Black Angel" brings things to a close with one of the more effectively lugubrious seafaring tales you're likely to hear on a hard rock album.
LOVE stands among the eighties' finest musical moments, and at the absolute peak of the Cult's desultory and ambiguous career. With their next album, ELECTRIC, Astbury, Duffy and their changing cast of cohorts would take yet another sudden turn - into the terrain of heavy metal wannabes - leaving this singularly excellent and eclectic collection of songs to remain for all time a sort of genre unto itself - as well as a tantalizing promise of what might have been. Classic!
"Like the heat from a thousand suns...".......2006-04-11
"Love" was the first stylistic change for the Cult and the band's breakthrough record in Europe, spawning a series of superb singles and being one of those albums that truthfully deserved the success it had (although in America, it would take another album before any real success manifested).
So what makes "Love" so good? It really is a sense of synthesis of both the band's gothic roots, punk aesthetic, and '70s psychedelia-- the album presents the darkness of gothic but without the bleakness that can often come along with it ("Nirvana"), the sense of space and looseness of the best of psychedelia ("Revolution") and the sense of anger and immediacy of punk ("Phoenix"). Along the way, the band presents their pinnacle acheivements in the gothic/new wave arena (moody ballad "Brother Wolf; Sister Moon" and single "She Sells Sanctuary") anda rock masterpiece that points the way for what would be to come ("Rain"), and throughout the band's performances are top notch with both singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy beginning to really develop the sense of swagger that would be brought way out on their next album ("Electric"). Truthfully, there's not a bad cut on the album.
It can be argued, perhaps honestly, that The Cult never did anything as good as "Love", certainly it is the best of their early work. Highly recommended.

BIASED.......2007-02-04
Charles Manson is absolutely insane. He doesn't know what he is saying or doing, and he has no conscience at all. However, buried under all that chaos is a genius with extraordinary talent. You don't blame someone with mental retardation for who they are. It is simply not their fault or choice. Manson may not be retarded, but he's most definitely a paranoid schizophrenic. I don't believe he was always insane. I think all the dope and LSD he did brought out his latent mental illness. There is no doubt a crazy man is singing these songs. This is before he lost all sanity and still had some grip on reality, although obviously not entirely. Be biased if you will, but the simple fact remains. He has a beautiful voice and plays the guitar wonderfully. He is not a good man at all. I agree he is a pitiful disgrace to humanity. As for the music on this CD, it is a gateway into the mind of a madman. A madman with genuine talent, regardless what any of you Manson hater's say.
So bad it's good.......2006-09-24
From my understanding, this is essentially a demo Charlie recorded before his time of infamy. The music alternates between hippie folk rock and trance jams (droning sitar/violin). Every now and then, he actually comes close to getting it "right" because a few of the tracks on here are admittedly catchy. You can tell that he's at least trying, though whether he actually suceeds is subjective. Personally, I'd say "no" but in a way that's half of this album's charm. If you have a sick sense of humor (ie: you think "Manos: the hands of fate" is a *comedy*] then you will probably like this. Otherwise, stay away.
A KILLER CLASSIC!!!.......2006-07-05
First of all, this is my opinion about the recording and the songs. I will not talk about the killer and the madman of course he is. That's another story. But I think he had ability for songwriting. Let's not forget that he co-wrote the songs with Dennis Wilson, who's more time in the music business than Manson. This gives the album an interesting turn. The lyrics are completely twisted and senseless but the music is very good for me. Sad to say that the record became a classic for the insanity that went behind the man who created it, but it's true. I like "Ego", "Look at your game, girl" (though I prefer Guns N'Roses version), and "Mechanical Man". It's amazing to listen to this album and imagine that is sung by a killer! It's unbelievable! But it's thrilling as well!
I gotta go along with "MEWZIK" on this one!.......2006-06-03
Did "MEWZIK" say something about, they should cut off Manson's hands and vocal cords, considering what he had his people do to others who had even more talent (i.e., Sharon Tate)... OK, I'll go along with that. Anyone else in favor, let's get together and suggest that to the authorities. From what little I've previewed of this CD, that beast had little or no talent...and it's on an audio CD???? Hell, if I'd known that it was THAT easy to release an audio CD of that low of quality and talent...I myself would have done so a long time ago!!
If you're not in your right mind, you might actually enjoy this CD. If you are in your right mind...you'll probably agree with "MEWZIK" and myself.
Oh well...for what that was worth...That and about $1.48 might get you a cheap cup of coffee these days...

First EP from this Austin, Texas band makes with the happy.......2007-04-27
Tired of dark, heavy indie rock about brakeups and breakdowns? "Raised by Wolves" is the perfect alternative for you. This 5 song EP makes with the happy without ever losing a beat. The title track sets the tone with it's fast drum beat and jangly guitar. Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist, Ramesh Srivasta knows how to write hooks and melodies guaranteed to keep you humming for days, and his lyrics, though often about brakeups and breakdowns are uplifting and confident. While they have garnered many comparisons to '80's acts like the Smiths (most probably because the second track, The Start of Something, sounds like it could easily be a Smith's B-side) more recent releases have shown Voxtrot are exploring and creating their own sound. This is an excellent introduction to a band that will soon be getting national attention. Finally, if you get a chance to see them live, don't miss it. I was fortunate enough to catch them at a small club, a day after they opened for Elefant in San Francisco. They were brilliant and did an incredible cover of "Love Vigilantes" by New Order.
my new addiction.......2006-06-09
i saw this band open for elefant. they were actually better than elefant. their energy is so apparent on stage not to mention in their songs. all the songs are amazing and different and upbeat with wondrous and witty lyrics. they are reminiscent of the smiths, belle & sebastian and new order, amongst other great bands. i haven't been taken with a band like this in 5 years. they are definitely worth checking out.
Shake your booty and hold your mama's hand!.......2006-04-30
This band is band of the new century for me! Great, catchy, fun, HAPPY; if you like good feeling smiths, cure etc you'll probably like these guys. I'm into new 80s stuff like the killers, bravery, hot hot heat, editors, etc... but I really, absolutely, positively LOVE these guys's style!!!!!! It's a change from the dark dancy, but you still wanna get down! If they combined their last two cds, it would have made for a great album!!!! Have a listen; i promise, you wont be sad.
Makes Me Smile........2006-03-19
I absolutely love this stuff. The Start of Something and Raised by Wolves are so uplifting that it even makes me want get up and dance, and not a whole lot of music can do that. It's just so catchy. Also there are some slower songs like Long Haul and Wrecking Force that are interesting. I think this band has the potential to become the next big thing, but still, that might take away some of their charm if they were to be superstars, I think they are better off being themselves.
this thing is great.......2006-03-17
ok, so i'm not actually a kid, i just had to click it because i don't have an account and whatnot. yes.
so, this band is phenomenal. i got the first song through the indiefeed alternative/modern rock channel and was hooked instantly. i bought the song 'raised by wolves' on itunes and still couldn't believe they were so incredible. they are! like everyone else, i wish they would come out with a full lenght, but no. however, there is another ep coming out on april 4th!!! get ready! if you like good music, get this! seriously!!!!!!

A real must for Cult fans.......2000-10-13
This CD includes a mix of well worn Cult classics such as Love Removal Machine and Lil Devil, together with some of the bands best 'B' sides, in Zap City and Love Trooper. The influence of Rick Rubin from the 'Electric' period on these 'b' sides is obvious and how they never made the album will remain a mystery. The real gems though on this CD are the recordings from the Manor sessions prior to the Electric album and prior to Rick Rubin taking charge. Groove Co offers a glimpse into what could have been with funky vocals from Astbury and a sound not like anything they have produced before or since. 'Conquistador' shows Duffy at his majestic best and proves that record companies should not interfere in what music is released, could have been a great album. Oh yeah, 'Wolf childs blues', grab a bottle of jack and lay back, enjoy!

excercises in cinematic confusion for the emotionaly excused.......2006-01-15
it sounds like the machines have risen and taken over on this album. cracked, distorted frequencies collide head on with rampant bursts of primal noise. spooky ambient interludes only add to the confusion. just sit back, and try to enjoy this ride. it may not make sense, but that is part of the thrill.
For Love of Loops.......2000-06-07
You can imagine these guys hunkered down in a filthy apartment in a terrifying post-apocalyptic metropolis, recording tape loops of street noise and decaying instruments for a gruesome anthropological document. From the initial shattering violence of a car horn and sampled heavy-metal guitar grind on the title track, you can tell you're in for something aurally unforgiving. The range of source material in their loop library is dizzying, drawing from any genre you can think of and any culture you've heard of-- in addition to ice cream trucks and spanish radio stations. "Clown Party" is a forty-minute mush that twists and bends relentlessly; the only way I can describe it is that it captures the experience of a telepath on a crowded subway, unable to tune out the thoughts of the hundred people around him. Love God is a terrifying album, much less accesible than 1994's "Burn or Bury," a collection of collaborations with vocalists from as varied sources as Mr. Bungle, The Geraldine Fibbers, and Jets to Brazil. But its manic repetition rewards repeated listening and seems infinitely rich. Summary: It's the soundtrack to a protracted and post-modern armageddon, attended by panhandlers, squatters, truckers, and your high-school AV club.
