5 out of 5 stars Bach and Handel Treats.......2000-08-04

The unfortunate thingÑif anything can be said to the contrary about this collectionÑis that is an older recording. As far as authenticity, what was available in the days of Bach and Handel to perform their music, and what they may have had in mind as the formidable way of presenting it to the publicÑas well as to the heavensÑmay be quite different things. Viewed in this way, authenticity may be an abstraction we are not here priviledged to comment on.

I have marveled for years, even when these were two separate LP's, of the power and dimensionality conveyed by the way these works are performed. I still switch from one to another piece as which is my favorite. In this respect, the experience is a hermenutic delight. Any lover or respecter of Bach or Handel would not go wrong by including this collection in their musical library.

When I use the word "treats" in the title, I mean just that: it is a collection of works that one would be hard pressed to find performed together on any available recording. And so I use the metaphor "treat," as if I were given a morsel and then devoured it; and another, and devoured that one, each with a fullness of pleasure and delight, and with soul filling satisfaction.

These indivdual recordings are for the most part masterpieces in and of themselves, and to be able to listen to them as they are performed flawlessly, and in a manner that invites the Spirit of GodÑby saying they are a "treat"Ñis to merely to treat them minimally.

3 out of 5 stars Fine recording, but doesn't work for me........1999-05-07

I love several of J.S. Bach's cantatas, and enjoy hearing them in a variety of ways--period performances, orchestral arrangements, etc. Therefore I'm not one to insist on authenticity. Nevertheless, the chorus here sounds too big for the Bach. Also, the program needs more variety for straight through listening. Chorus after (massive) chorus doesn't work for me.

Now that William Bolcom's Songs of Innocence and of Experience on Naxos is beginning to get him the attention he deserves as a composer, a collection like this is particularly welcome and useful. Bolcom's First Symphony (1957) is a collection of teenage hijinks somewhat reminiscent of Shostakovich's First Symphony. It imitates an amazing range of music and composers, including a major tribute to Ives in the finale, yet somehow hangs together. The Third Symphony, from two decades later (1979), is larger-scale, serious, and more challenging in content, yet still a thoroughly rewarding and accessible piece. Seattle Slew (1986) is just plain fun, and a reminder that Bolcom has always been involved in American popular music as a major part of his activities. The recordings are among the latest in the Louisville series (1990-91), so they sound excellent, and Smith and his ensemble give brilliant, committed performances. Definitely worth hearing! --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Bolcom as Symphonist (and Jokester).......2005-05-08

The following is taken from the First Edition Music website, in order to explain this new label: "The Santa Fe Music Group recently acquired the rights to the Louisville Orchestra's landmark First Edition Records and launches the new First Edition Music line that now numbers 38 compact disc titles. Culled from the First Edition archive of over 400 modern works, nearly all were originally produced by legendary Columbia Masterworks director Howard Scott (presently consulting on the reissues)." Like many old, established and extremely valuable labels, First Edition as we knew it apparently is no more, but the Santa Fe Music Group has stepped in to fill the breach and to keep many of those treasured First Edition issues available. They, and the Louisville Orchestra, were so very extraordinarily valuable over the years in producing premières and performances of new works by mostly American composers. I've known and loved these Bolcom performances for ten or more years. I tend to buy CDs of Bolcom's music because although his output is highly variable he always has something interesting to say, and he is capable of saying it in well-crafted and often lovely music. (The recent 2 CD set of his 'Songs of Innocence and of Experience' has been a runaway best-seller.) His is an eclectic style and that is certainly in evidence here. The First Symphony, written at the Aspen Music Festival when he was 19 and studying with Darius Milhaud, borrows styles from all over but manages to be, nonetheless, a coherent whole. And it's good fun, too, although it is over too soon - it's only 17 minutes long.

The Third Symphony is altogether more serious. It attempts, in an impressionistic way, to limn the journey from birth to death. Alto flute, English horn and bassoon have a Greek chorus-like role in the symphony. The first movement is called 'Alpha,' the last 'Omega.' There is a definite Classical feel to the symphony. This performance, recorded in 1992, is marked by crisp ensemble and adroit solo work.

'Seattle Slew,' written for the Pacific Northwest Ballet, trades on the fame of 1977 Triple Crown Winner, Seattle Slew. A three-movement romp, the movements are called 'Derby Dressage' (Bolcom calls it a 'bar scene' with a Runyonesque crowd), 'Preakness Promenade' (where the patrons are 'sophisticated and snobby') and 'Belmont Bourée' (with 'race-goers [who] are rather preppie'). The whole thing is written in regular rhythms and square melodies but still somehow manages to be high-spirited, largely because all three movements incorporate ragtime and tango elements.

This is a worthy reissue. If you missed the first time round, now's your chance to have it a mid-price.

5 out of 5 stars Deacon John's New Orleans R&B Tribute Jumps All Day Long.......2003-10-20

Deacon John Moore is a veteran of the New Orleans music scene including a period when he was one of the regulars in the studio band at the legendary Cosimo's studio. More recently he has worked as a guitarist, vocalist and bandleader. A few years back, there was cd of him performing live at JazzFest doing fiery renditions of songs associated with B.B. King, Elmore James and others. He has a new recording, "Deacon John's Jump Blues, Music From the Film" (Vetter Communications)? that is also accompanied by a dvd of a live concert and a documentary film. This project has him perform a number of classic numbers with the assistance of pianists Davell Crawford, Dr. John, Henry Butler and Allen Toussaint, bassists Chris Severin and Deacon John's brother Charles Moore, drummers Herlin Riley and Shannon Powell, saxophonist Amadee Castanell and legendary arranger Wardell Querzegue. There are featured spots for the Zion Harmonizers and vocalist Teedy Boutté. From the opening notes of Ray Charles' aptly named "Jumpin' in the Morning," where Deacon John's ebullient vocal captures the sound of the classic fifties' Genius to the closing solo piano feature for Davell Crawford, "Nobody Knows You When Your Down and Out" (which Deacon John sings strongly on the second track)? this is a joyous celebration of the New Orleans musica. Deacon John's spirited covers of The Spiders "I Didn't Want to Do It", Smiley Lewis' Someday and a medley of "Hook Line and Slinker" with "Go On Fool," and Jimmy Liggins' "Going Back to New Orleans" are sung with conviction and joy. Even more impressive is his tribute to Johnny Adams, singing the Tan Canary's "A Losing Battle" (written by Dr. John)?. With Teedy Boutté he does a medley of Shirley and Lee songs ("Let the Good Times Roll" and "Feel So Good")? and then she does a marvelous rendition of "Piece of My Heart" based on the classic original Erma Franklin recording. The Zion Harmonizers contribute a stirring "Jesus is on the Main Line" and Dr. John does a lovely solo rendition of "Tipitina." This music is wonderful as Querzegue has produced wonderful arrangements for this session, the studio bands are terrific with special kudos directed at the rhythm sections and the vocalists show their love for the music with these performances. The only possible quibble might be the relatively short playing time but I have repeatedly listened to this since I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY, Deacon John talents is for all to see and hear!.......2003-09-04

After 40 years of Great sounds, Deacon John's music is here for all the world to hear. New Orleans has kept this Great music MAN far too long, so let him go BIG EASY, so that he can perform his great sounds.

5 out of 5 stars Deacon John needs to be heard...........2003-08-27

This CD flows so well - each song is filled with great lyrics and music. I love every track - it is the type of CD that is great to listen to alone or for a party. Deacon John's Jump Blues will never sound dated or dull it sucks you in and impresses you everytime it plays! This CD is a must have for all ages!

5 out of 5 stars Experience the real New Orleans.......2003-07-13

As a couple, one a native of Louisiana and the other having lived there for several years in the 70's, but now living in Florida, we felt as if we were back in the Big Easy on the streets of the French Quarter checking out the music clubs, or sampling the city's rich mix of jazz , blues, gospel, etc. at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. The quality of the recording is superb. We recommned the DVD, too. It's great fun and well produced.

5 out of 5 stars the melody unit returns!.......2005-12-14

After a few years off, The Melody Unit returns with another great cd. At first listen, you may be slightly underwhelmed at the straight-up pop songs (as opposed to their dreamier releases in the past). But, the songs draw you in...they're irresistably catchy and slightly whimsical. Kevin Kelly's songwriting is totally in form. Pick this cd up!

5 out of 5 stars Another feast for Handelians.......2003-12-25

Here's another astonishing piece for all Handelians. Many of Handel's great pieces have sadly been neglected - just like many of Richard Strauss' operas which have only recently received attention from people like Botstein, Korsten and Sinopoli (deceased). Thankfully, Gardiner and his team took the trouble to record this astonishing masterpiece. I simply love this piece - Saul!! The Monteverdi choir is the best in the world - listen to their stunning virtuosity here. Thank you, Gardiner!!

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent music.......2003-09-14

Saul is one of those lesser known works by Handel. I certainly prefer Solomon, the Messiah or Israel in Egypt. Nevertheless, there is plenty of glorious music in Saul. The Monteverdi sings with their customary virtuosity. Casting of solo parts is superb. A bit on the pricey side but this is an investment that will yield rich dividends over a long period of time. Instead of listening to the Messiah all the time, or Solomon or Jephtha, why not be more daring and explore this lesser known work by Handel?
