When Grammy-winning Buena Vista Social club lead vocalist Ibrahim Ferrer died in August 2005 at the age of 78, he was within a few weeks of accomplishing a lifelong ambition: to record an album of suave, sexy, elegant Cuban boleros. The first acknowledged tune of the genre, "Tristezas," was composed in Santiago by Pepe Sánchez during the late 1800s. The form was descended from a Spanish waltz-like dance of the same name, which in turn evolved from the French contradanse and, even earlier on, from English rural styles. Strangely, Ferrer had repeatedly been told that his voice was not sufficiently "manly" for these leisurely, achingly romantic ballads. But judging by the present tracks--and despite the inevitable depredations of age, which only give his interpretations an added, rueful vulnerability--this is demonstrably untrue. The singer's reedy tenor, in some cases rescued from high-quality demos with instrumentals recorded posthumously, touches places in a listener's soul that no power-popster with an umpteen-octave range and mud-slides of melisma could remotely approach. Ferrer is joined by BVSC band-mates Rubén González (piano) and Omara Portuondo (vocals) on one tune each and is accompanied by the soulfully rinky-tink piano of Roberto Fonseca, Orlando "Cachaíto" López's sinuous, resonant acoustic bass and Manuel Galbán's sensitive guitar, with Ramses Rodrigues and Emilio del Monte manning trap drums and percussion. Overall, Mi Sueño ("My Dream") has a late-night feeling, as though captured amid an after-hours jam in a smoky, malt-scented Havana nightclub, long after sleeves have been pushed up and chairs piled on the tables. --Christina Roden

Album Description

Mi Sueno is essential listening. Ferrer brings warmth, ease, humor and poignancy to his vocals, where romance is looked back on fondly and still longed for passionately. Featuring "Uno" and "Perfidia," Mi Sueno is a dream everyone can share.

5 out of 5 stars True Cuban Music... .......2007-07-03

Just amazing, I play it over and over! For me it serves as a bridge that brings to reality a cuba that was experienced by a generation that is slowly passing like the Maestro Ibrahim Ferrer. I grew up with this style/era of music in thanks to my grandparents. It allows me to be a part of them and bring to them a little piece of the Cuba they left behind.

5 out of 5 stars The Cuban Nat King Cole.......2007-05-31

Mi Sueno is the kind of CD that you can put on and play over and over again for hours. Ibrahim sings each song with such conviction you feel every note and you know he has been in love and was deeply in love when he sang these songs. Rest in peace Ibrahim! You were indeed God's gift to us while you were on this earth.

5 out of 5 stars Soulful.......2007-04-26

I have quite a few of Ibrahim Ferrer's recorded music and found his boleros (slower songs) quite pleasing and emotional. I would pick the boleros he sang out of all the Buena Vista recordings and put them on my MP3 player because I liked the soulful emotion he envoked when he sang. It's hard to describe in words, sometimes an artist interpretation of a song really touches the soul, Ibrahim was one of these unique artists. I was very pleased to see that there is finally a release of just slow songs, about love and relationships, even if you don't understand the Spanish language, I think you will hear his Cuban soul and warmth penetrate your senses. I must say that in his earlier recordings ( from the original Buena Vista recordings) the tone and clarity of his voice was prime. In this CD, one can hear the aging of his voice a bit, but don't let that deter you from adding this CD to your collection, for such a soulfoul voice only comes about once in a decade or two, and Ibrahim's expressive qualities were as eminently apparent in his earlier years as they were in his late years. This is a good selection of songs, some were very popular, such as "Perfidia," and "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas," others less recognizable, but all suitable for both listening and slow dancing.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, thank you, thank you..........2007-04-26

I was absolutely crushed when I heard of Ferrer's death back in 2005, and the recent release of Mi Sueno was more than I could have asked for to bring his music back into my life.

I take issue with the previous reviewer who stated that Ibrahim did not have much of a voice (unless having a "voice" nowadays only means how loud someone can sing, which seems to be the case when watching contestants on American Idol). I'm sure it wasn't meant in a negative way--after all, those are words I would use to describe the inimitable Billie Holiday--but there is nothing lacking in his vocal strength or technique. Even in the last years of his life, he could still carry a note so meltingly beautiful and full of emotion without sounding strained. The most wonderful quality about his singing is the brightness of his tone yet the ability to convey bittersweet sadness at the same time. I don't have to understand Spanish to know what the songs are about.

Roberto Fonseca brings a wonderful modern sound to the album, and while I miss the virtuosic Ruben Gonzalez, I'm glad that this was my introduction to another talented Cuban pianist who I will be looking out for in the future.

4 out of 5 stars Inimitable grace........2007-04-24

When those magnificent Cuban veterans Buena Vista Social Club exploded on to the scene, their singer Ibrahim Ferrer was the life and soul of the party.

It wasn't so much his voice - he really didn't have much of one - but more what he did with it: his timing, and the irrepressible glee with which he delivered his frequently saucy lyrics.

"Mi sueno" means "my dream", and that is literally what this posthumous new album meant for him: he had always wanted to record a collection of boleros - meltingly romantic traditional songs - and that is what he spent his last weeks recording.
Luckily, his death didn't prevent that dream being realised, as he'd left a cache of high-definition demos.
So here we are: sensitively backed by his superb group on piano, bass, guitar, and drums, and at one point poignantly joined by fellow veteran Omara Portuondo, Ibrahim calls to us from beyond the grave with inimitable grace.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice and soothing.......2007-02-01

We play this CD when we're feeling mellow, or when we're trying to put our 2-year-old daughter to bed. I could swear the third track is part of the soundtrack to "The Third Man."

4 out of 5 stars Barrios Defined.......2006-07-07

I should have written this years ago when I first got this recording. I host a half-hour program of music for guitar called Silver Moonbeams on WHRO FM 90.3 in Norfolk VA. I have all the Barrios recordings, and this is simply the best. Antigoni Goni knows and loves this music. Her timing and phrasing are superb. Her touch on the instrument is light and just right. In short, in my opinion, this is the very finest Barrios recording available. Many guitarists are competent, a few are brilliant and just a handful play music for the Gods. Antigoni Goni is definitely in the latter category.

5 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Barrios.......2005-03-30

I got this and David Russell's Barrios CD about the same time. The Penguin Guide to CDs gives this CD a three star - outstanding - rating; they also rate John Williams' Barrios recordings highly, but don't mention the David Russell Barrios recording.

This is Volume 1 of a projected series of Barrios' guitar music. It is my first time hearing Antigoni Goni who is excellent, leading me to want to hear her other recordings as well as live in recital.

There isn't too much overlap between her and Russell in Barrios, making getting both CDs worth it if you like Barrios.

Excellent recording quality.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2003-07-25

Playing Barrios requires more than just excellent technique. The performer has to capture the darkness in the light passages, like a yearning in moments of gaiety..Also, capture the light in the dark passages, as a ray of optimissim in moments of sorrow. Ms Goni captures all these emotions profoundly in this highly recommended CD.

The programme features rarely heard gems like Humouresque, Pepita, and the magical Tu y Yo. Her expressive phrasing often breathes new life into the often played works such as Maxixe, Junto a Tu Corazon, Vals no4.

Romantic guitar music, with Latin American folkloric influence

5 out of 5 stars Barrrio's belongs in every classical music lovers collection.......2006-09-05

This volume is played with the same mastery of Barrio's as Volume 1 from Naxos. As much as i liked volume 1 this collection is from his later period and contains nothing but masterpieces is even better. While he is famous for the Cathedral each piece on this disc is completey different and moving. I must thank Naxos for releasing these disc because I never would have heard of Barrio's.
According to the notes Barrio's is considered by many to be the best composr of music for guitar.
I would go even further by saying Barrio's belongs in every classical music collection not just people who like guitar music. He is a master and creates powerfully beautiful works.

Amazon.com essential recording

Gidon Kremer, who plays the standard violin repertoire so well, has remained a restless explorer of music. Here is his first album of Piazzolla arrangements, introduced by a moving and perceptive assessment of Piazzolla by composer John Adams. Kremer has completely steeped himself in the spirit of the tango, and of Piazzolla's transformation of this music into concert works. The selection (mostly larger-scale Piazzolla works), the varied arrangements, and the compelling quality of the playing make this one of the best albums of this music not involving the composer's own performances. And if you love it, you'll be glad to know that Kremer's second Piazzolla album is also available. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully captivating music by the tango master.......2005-10-25

I was introduced to the music of Astor Piazzolla by the more than great violinist Gidon Kremer when he played a virtuosic tango as an encore. Whenever a rich new vein of wonderful music is opened to me, well, it makes for a bright and happy day. Not long after I picked up this CD and I can recommend it to you highly. This is more than just tango dance music, these are serious and contemplative compositions that use the Tango as the vehicle just as the classical and especially Baroque composers used their dance music for instrumental compositions. The music is full of mood, sensuality, rhythm, lush harmonies, dissonance, love, and pain. It is a music of contrasts and never gets too fussy or complicated. It wears its heart on its sleeve and draws us in because it is so charming.

Each piece has its own varied ensemble and the musicians in that ensemble also arrange the music for that track. Kremer leads from the violin in all of them, after all it is his album and his hommage to Piazzolla. However, the instruments used depend on the musical materials and mood of the piece. The piano is used quite a bit, and at times there are wind instruments. The bandoneón is required in tango, as well. It is a kind of concertina that was developed and made in Germany, but adopted in Argentina for the Tango. It has a wonderfully reedy sound and is played with buttons on each side of the bellows. Depending on the model, the note can change or stay the same whether you are pulling the bellows out or pushing them in, but in all of them there are two voices always at the octave and gives the bandoneón its characteristic sound.

The only composition not by Piazzolla is a very interesting tango included as a tribute to the master entitled "El sol sueño" by Jerzy Peterbushsky.

This is good music and a very enjoyable change of pace.

4 out of 5 stars When styles mix.......2005-09-07

I bought this record following a live performance by Gidon Kremer et al. at the Verbier Festival. The mixture of classical music with a dose of jazz on a Latin base produces an interesting result that is quite surprising at first. However, the more one hears, the more the result grows on the listener, just as at the live show where the audience, somewhat stunned at the outset, gave a standing ovation at the end.

Overall, the mélange is pleasant, chill listening to be appreciated by fans of any of the three styles of music.

4 out of 5 stars Explains It All To Those Wounded in Love.......2005-01-16

Ever have a moment where you loved someone so much you hated him?

Ever have a relationship you could not get out of your mouth, your mind, your heart, your system, but that you knew was over and done with forever and ever, and you'd never even see the other again?

Ever feel so happy you wanted to cry? No, sob? Wrenching, wracking sobs? From happiness, now.

Yes?

Have I got a CD for you: Hommage a Piazzolla, featuring Gidon Kremer.

Like many, I suspect, I have a mixed relationship to tango. When I put on a tango CD, I fear I'll be hearing something that sets my teeth to jangling and makes me want to slap someone in the face.

This isn't that. You could listen to most of this while sitting perfectly still, on a window sill, in fact, with the lights down low in your apartment, as you stare out at the rain-slicked city at night. A drink sits on a nearby table, unfinished...you have no will to finish it.

(It's hard not to imagine these things while listening to this music; really, it's all so poetic, cinematic, irresistable.)

At some point, though, you're probably not going to be able to sit still any more, and you'll have to put that rose in your teeth and cut a few moves.

Tango often sounds, to we non-Argentinians, like a parody of itself.

This CD does not.

Rather, when I put it on, not at all sure what to expect, I had one of those epiphanies that art can give you.

I had been brooding over a vexed relationship, one I did not understand, but knew was hurting me, not with any immediacy, but like a sore tooth that could stand to go a few more months before you get over your fear of the dentist to get it fixed.

What bugged me most of all was that I did not understand what was hurting. Rationally, I had no reason to feel troubled.

I put on this CD, with the relationship way in the back of my mind, and I just, immediately thought, "That's it. This music is explaining it all; this music is articulating everything."

Not bad.

This kind of music, music that allows in the true bittersweet of life, the unsolvable, the passion, is all too rare. If music that addresses those qualities is what you crave, this CD might be just what you need.

5 out of 5 stars Great sex music! Comes from the heart!.......2004-07-21

The music and perforamance are so sensually played and achingly beautiful, the hairs on my neck and arms stand up on end. Listen to the opening track and tell me this is not great sex music. Yes, tango is a very sensual art form and this CD is great for those very intimate moments. Of course, sex aside, the music is nothing short of a miracle unto itself. That I was to discover this CD just last year meant I was without it for 7 years since it was released. My life is richer for this and other Piazzolla works done by Kremer.
This CD has become one of those "island" CDs that you would take if you wer so to become deserted on one. You should be so lucky!

5 out of 5 stars Piazzolla's Unofficial Interpreter.......2001-04-12

I first became aware of this CD several years ago as its melancholy strains wafted through the air of a bookstore through which I was browsing. My ears perked up...Piazzolla!!! Upon inquiry, I was shown the CD and I immediately purchased a copy. I couldn't wait to get home and listen to it at elevated volume. What a recording!! Kremer has captured and distilled the essence of Piazzolla's music. Every song is a masterpiece and nearly all of my favorite mid-period Piazzolla compositions are contained within. A special treat is the magnum opus which closes the set, a 12-minute rendering of Le Grand Tango with just Kremer's violin and the restrained passion of Vadim Sakharov's piano to lead your mind into another musical dimension. Gidon Kremer has since recorded a number of Piazzolla-related CDs and in so doing has set himself up as the unofficial interpreter of El Maestro's music. If you like Piazzolla, you are sure to enjoy this CD. I give it my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars If you only purchase one Soda Stereo CD..........2007-02-28

...you'd be doing yourself a tremendous disservice, but that's beside the point. Of their entire output, this is the disc with which to start.

Then again, I'm biased. I bought the CD when it first came out, and it was the first CD of theirs I owned. I don't think I listened to much else for about a month after that, and it's still in heavy rotation ten years later.

In the other reviews, you'll see comparisons to a number of other bands that influenced Soda Stereo, and whose sounds echo faintly here. But this isn't just imitation; the band have made their influences their own to a degree that you have to listen hard sometimes to pick them up. It's a fuller, more mature work than a lot of their earlier recordings (where the outside influences are much more pronounced).

That said, the one disc that I'd compare this to is Radiohead's "OK Computer," in terms of its complexity and originality. Where it differs, though, is in the outlook of the bands' respective front men, and how that effects the music. "Suen~o Stereo" doesn't have the icy, alienated detachment that informs so much of Radiohead's work. Everything about this--Gustavo Cerati's music and lyrics, as well as his playing and that of Charly Alberti and Zeta Bosio--is engaged, and engaging, from the driven "Ella Uso Mi Cabeza Como Un Revolver" (quite a mouthful for a non-Spanish speaker like me) and "Paseando Por Roma" to the Eno-esque atmospherics that dominate the disc's second half.

Forget for a minute that this is Rock En Espan~ol, and never mind if you don't speak Spanish. This is an album that transcends language, and transcends time: it sounds as fresh, and sometimes as startling, now as it did when it came out, and there aren't too many albums of which you can say that.

5 out of 5 stars Soda Stereo decided to leave with a bang!!.......2004-11-30

Once again this band has outdone itself. They broke up in 1997, but decided to leave us with this great album, Sueno Stereo. I always said that Soda Stereo was ahead of its time, and this album is evidence of that. Even 10 years after this recording, this album still sounds like it may been recorded yesterday because it sounds so fresh and modern, unlike anything you've heard before. I highly recommend everyone, whether you're a Soda fan or not, to purchase this album. You will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars No pasa de moda..........2004-11-17

5 out of 5 stars Soda en su maximo.......2004-06-13

5 out of 5 stars Exelente Sueño De Soda.......2004-05-24

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music performed by real Maestro.......2004-06-23

It's a real pleasure to enjoy such a deep, thoughtful performance as Norbert Kraft delivers. In his hands guitar speaks like a live creature and even the simplest pieces included in this CD sound dramatically touching and charming.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2003-09-24

This is a beautiful CD to listen to. The music is very relaxing. It reminds me of the the beautiful recital music I listened to in my college years...very professionally and well done.

I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Essential listening.......2001-08-23

Norbert's playing is without doubt breathtaking in every sense. For all those classical guitar lovers out there, I would recommended buying this CD. The phrasing, dynamics, tonal variation and articulation are very well conveyed in all his pieces. For those studying the Segovia edition of the Sor studies and Tarrega's concert pieces suchas Recuerdos Alhmabra, this would be extremely beneficial.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Spanish Studies for Guitar.......2001-02-02

If early music lessons have caused you to view "studies" or "exercises" with disdain, a CD like this one could come as a real eye-opener. These compositions by Sor, Aguado, and Tarrega show that the concept of a beautiful teaching work is not an oxymoron, but, rather, can and does constitute beautiful solo guitar performances.

If you want to find out if you'll enjoy this collection of guitar transcriptions, listen to track 7, the "Military Tap" by Mariano Mores. If you can resist the ingenuity of the arrangement and the verve of the performance, this disc is not for you. For further evidence, try track 13, Astor Piazzolla's "Midnight in Buenos Aires," an amazing example of Villadangos's imagination as an arranger. This guitarist, who comes from Buenos Aires himself, has obviously absorbed the tango tradition and idiom completely. You might think guitar solo arrangements would be disappointing, lacking the inherent color of the typical tango band. Not so in this exhilarating collection, which also juxtaposes internationally known tango composers like Piazzolla and Carlos Gardel with others much less well known. Villadangos also supplies his own helpful program notes for this completely satisfying, memorable recital. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST guitar cds ever!.......2006-12-27

This is by far one of the best guitar CDs and the best performance I have ever heard. So far I have 3 cds from Villadangos and they are all brilliant. Strongly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars OLE.......2004-06-07

This is a wonderful album of acoustic guitar music. I've always loved the Tango and the so-called "classical" guitar. This album brings them together delightfully. The album transports me to a smoke-filled Argentinean nightclub where the Tango is danced very passionately. I agree with the review to this album; tract 13 is wonderful.
If you are into the Tango or guitar music or just want to be transported, in your mind, to a different time and place, buy this disc.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant!.......2007-02-02

I have both Russell and Williams and just finished giving Williams a five star review as well. Yep: I cannot help you by pointing to one or the other as being better in any way. Williams is very direct and tackles each piece effortlessly, and in particular executes the tambora technique better than Russell, (or at least, it's recorded better). Russell meanwhile (as many point out) has a peculiar ability to inject more mood and/or feeling into a given piece - not just the (boring) drama of slower numbers either, but also the excitement and energy of faster numbers. Because of this it's really well worth your while to pick up EVERYTHING Russell has recorded: I've yet to encounter something I didn't like a LOT.

I particularly enjoy the Danza Paraguaya tunes featured here, but prefer Williams for Cueca, and for his inclusion of Maxixa and Aconquija... in short: you've got to get both to fully appreciate the genius of Barrios!

5 out of 5 stars 6 Stars.......2007-01-11

This is some of the most difficult guitar music ever written. David Russell makes these pieces sound like they were of average difficulty and his spontaneity is incredible. Much more spontaneous than Williams. Williams takes some liberty when making chord changes, etc. and it almost becomes redundant and boring. Russell does none of that. All of the pieces are flowing and absolutely beautiful. The feeling of the pieces comes shining through. There is so much going on in this music which makes it so interesting and Russell overlooks nothing. Much of these compositions sound like there are two guitars as you will see when you listen to this. There is no guitar composition like a Barrios composition. Amazing.

3 out of 5 stars Alexander-Sergei Ramirez.......2006-08-25

I think I've listen 5-6 different versions for many of Barrios works. From all of them, the one that stands out is the CD from Alexander-Sergei Ramirez.

5 out of 5 stars damned fine Barrios.......2005-05-31

This is one of the first CDs that I listened to when getting into classical guitar and classical music in general and I couldn't think of a better one for a Barrios lover. Russell's rubato is sparing and tasteful (if you want to hear excessive rubato check out Norbert Kraft) and his tremolo technique is well-honed. He absolutely KILLS "En Sueno en la Floresta" and his "Ultima Cancion" is very moving. And he makes the Waltz Op. 8 No. 4 sound like 2 guitars playing.

This album will always be compared to John Williams's and in the end I think Russell's is better; Williams's reputation for being to mechanistic is well-earned in my opinion and his "Ultima Cancion" doesn't quite do it for me like Russell's does. It's a shame that Julian Bream never extensively recorded this music, it would be interesting to hear what he could do with it.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2006-09-29

The song entitled "The Prayer" sung by Andrea and Celin Dion is one of the most magnificent creative pieces I've ever heard. The combination of soft confidence, prayerful intelligence, and at times powerful orchestra and voice combine to offer a physical and spiritual experience. I am not a "religious" person, but this song transcends all beliefs.

While I enjoy many of the other songs on this album, the entire recording is worth purchasing simply for access to The Prayer.

Highly recommended. What a voice! Such passion!
Great romantic music! Great for making-out to!

I just think consumers should know this is the same CD as Sogno (polydor 1999) with maybe some cuts in Spanish.

.....Bocelli doesn't do dance remixes, which REALLY pisses me off!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-01-05

I bought this CD and Bocelli's "Romanza" CD and like this one a lot more.. I like all the duets, Dulce Pontes in "El Mar Y Tu" is dramatic and entertaining as well as most of the songs on here. Eros Ramazzotti is one of my favorites too, although he is more italian pop.. To the point, buy this CD-- you won't be disappointed.
