The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

A great duo!.......2007-03-21

Keith Grimwood and his tall friend Ezra Idlet have been performing for over 30 years as Trout Fishing in America. They write the songs which they perform and they are truly an entertaining pair. Audiences will identify with the universal experiences in "My Hair Had a Party Last Night" and "I've Got a Friend (and He Won't Be Quiet)". My personal favorite is the song entitled "Bob And Bob" which is about two identical snowflakes (thus repudiating Keith's elementary school teacher who taught that no two snowflakes are alike.) Their songs have wide appeal and children will enjoy them as well as adults. These are two very creative and entertaining musicians who are lots of fun whether they are appearing in person or on a CD.

I've followed Keith and Ezra for years and years - seen many of their shows and own all their recordings. Before now, as great as their albums have been, I never felt they captured the magic of their live performances.

"My Best Day" changes all of that. I have no idea how he did it, but somehow Fred Bogert has managed to bottle the excitement and exuberance of this performance and made it available to all of us on demand with this album. Amazing job.

You should still take your kids to see a live performance if you get a chance. The whole family will come out smiling.

"My Best Day" is the latest CD album of children's music to be released by the Grammy Award nominated group, Trout Fishing In America (otherwise known as guitarist Ezra Idelt and bassist Keith Grimwood, who have been playing together and making music to delight and entertain children for more than 30 years). This simply outstanding and highly recommended contribution to family and community library music collections for young listeners was recorded before a live audience in an event sponsored by the Arkansas Educational Television Network where Ezra Idelt and Keith Grimwood were joined by multi-instrumentalist performer and Trout record producer Fred Bogert. This is recording of a live concert they did in Conway, Ar.
Live concerts are absolutely what they do best.
If you are anywhere close to where they are performing-GO SEE THEM. We have driven 15 hours, walked three miles in the snow and braved 100 degree Texas heat to see them live.
I don't care if you are 4 or 40 -you'll have a great time.. They'll have you quacking like a duck, spinning around by your seat, craving Mexican condiments, putting up your Little Bunny Foo Foo ears, wishing you could juggle, saying tongue twisters, hugging your kids to sleep and counting in roman numerals (I am going to make my youngest a T-Shirt that says "I can count to 18 in Roman numberals and I'm only VI)."

So Grammy gods, are you listening.. this is a another great CD...

Fred Bogart plays with Keith and Ezra and adds a wonderful dimension to the music- a fullness and richness that enhances the fun.
"Fill It Up" is especially gorgeous with his guitar playing adding to an already lovely song. And who can imagine "Murrel's" without his jazzy piano?

Listening to the CD, it is obvious that the audience is having a blast-laughing, clapping, singing along. Don't forget later, you'll be able to buy the concert DVD and SEE that the audience is having a blast). The intros to the songs are very funny and get a great responses. I especially love the intro to "Day Care Blues". You'll have to buy it to see what Keith says.

There are two new songs on the CD which show that they haven't lost their touch. The songs are as funny and clever as their previous offerings. Of course, this just tantalizes us a little bit- an offering of completely new material would be wonderful. Or how about a dual kids/adult release?

Do not let the fact that some of the songs are on previous releases deter you from buying this- they have many new takes on the old favorites. "Day Care Blues" particulary stands out in this regard- it is a wonderful rendition. You can feel that kid's pain. "Sailing" is also a lot of fun with an audience and "Simon Says" is a quintessential audience participation song. We were having a great time getting very dizzy.

As usual, I am giving a shout-out to their wonderful musicianship. I defy you to listen to "Beans and Weenies" and tell me that's just three guys playing. Ezra's guitar playing rocks on "Day Care Blues" and Keith's voice sounds particularly nice on "Something Sweet".

So, all in all, a nice selection of songs. A nice way to catch a Trout concert and a fun time was had by all.

This has indeed been nominated for a Grammy. Congrats to the guys- they deserve it.

BRILLANT ALBUM, EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS HER OLDER ALBUMS.......2006-08-15

I've never written a review before for Amazon, as life is too short and there are too many albums and not enough time, but when I heard this album and saw the cutout in the barcode I knew I had to testify for Rickie.
Ugly Man/Countdown is the best 1-2 punch she's ever come up with to open an album. The former starts with the band sounding like an old jazz trio before it breaks wide open with great chord changes and amazing harmonies. The second track is very Steely Danish, with a Pretzel Logic-like bop backbeat and again great jazzy chord changes and harmonies. To let us know that she knows, she mentions Countdown to Ecstasy several times in the song; which is the name of the second Steely Dan album. Rickie is outdoing herself here, using everything AND the kitchen sink, totally in control of her vision and her songwriting mastery, and her experience has only helped her refine and develop these new songs with seemingly endless harmonic twists and turns that never seemed forced and will leave you breathless. She is a sorceress...
Takes You There is a great pop song, and everything from this track to the end of the album is great and flows well together. The song Evening is an incredible piano/voice only type song that she likes to do that will blow you away. She also throws in some hard-rocking blues and mixes this with jazz, pop and other elements, sometimes within the same song.
To sum it up, maybe this music is TOO good for the current market. She matches and even outdoes herself in scope and emotion. The production and sound and playing of the album is excellent all the way. Her vocals and harmonies resonate with warmth and nothing but love. She has sold well at other points in her career, but I can't totally understand why anyone who's really into music couldn't see that this is a classic album and wouldn't want to buy it. If you like this one, I recommend THE MAGAZINE as one to get (maybe not her best, but my favourite and best in my opinion). A keeper for life...

she continues to stay true to her talent, her creativity, her vision, her UNIQUENESS. i admire her because she is one of a kind and listens to the beat of her own drum. the instrumentation is fresh, fun and pretty damn fantastic. her voice is mature and childlike at the same time. she's cool and unique!
i boughty her albums from the debut through flying cowboys and enjoyed them all. then i bought pop pop and didn't like it. saw her in concert after releasing girl at her volcanoe and loved everything about the evening. (the volcano album, in my opinion is choice.) saw her a few years later after ghosty head came out, again in seattle but at a much smaller venue, and was disappointed by her detachment from the crowd. also, there were no seats at this place, everyone stood jamm-packed, which got tiring very quickly. I left before the concert was over. consequently, i didn't buy that album, although i liked some of the new stuff. recently, decided to check out this latest album, which i sampled in a store when it first came out but wasn't impressed. it sounded like the same old stuff. however, now a couple years later, or so, i bought it and am falling in love with rickie all over again. i even went online to buy it's like this and naked songs. for me, she's refreshing, especially when compared to all the pop and r&b that's being pumped out now and sounds so ordinary. plus, i like how she has the balls to speak/sing out politically.

Six years after Ghostyhead, her last album of original material, Rickie Lee Jones was motivated to return by the need to comment on the political situation in America from her viewpoint as an outsider from within Washington DC. Whilst some of the songs are lyrically explicit and therefore tied to the time in which they appeared, thankfully they are musically strong enough to outlast such limitations. Her debut album, Rickie Lee Jones, did not have especially fashionable new sounds on it, but equally has not dated, and fits as easily into today's listening experiences as this one does and will continue to do.
As always the best musicians around have been employed to create a blend of jazz, blues, soul and folk that adds up to a homogenous and idiosyncratic whole. The album sees her re-united in the Village studio in West Los Angeles with producer David Kalish, a close friend who had worked with her on Pirates in 1981, and he brought in Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) to co-produce. It features contributions from master-guitarist Bill Frisell, whose trio appear on two tracks, and Pete Thomas (drummer with Elvis Costello) among a stellar cast.
"I think I'm a great writer," Rickie Lee Jones has said, "and an important character in American art", and I would not argue. In Martin Scorsese's documentary No Direction Home there is a shot of Dylan standing beside a wall-poster proclaiming "Protest against the rising tide of conformity", which caused me to wonder who could stand beside such a poster today. Question answered.

Uneven, but still very good.......2005-07-14

I would describe myself as a fan, but not rabidly so. Ms. Jones is kinda hit or miss on many albums. This one is probably the strongest since her cover song CD, It's Like This. The first two tracks, Ugly Man and Second Chance, are arranged beautifully in a pseudo-jazz style. Smooth piano and wind instruments blend nicely with Rickie's slurred vocals. The next track, Bitchenostrophy, reminds me a lot of Stan Getz during the samba period, which I love. The vocals here, however, are slurred and slowed to the point of sleepiness. Things pick back up with a fun horn arrangement in Little Mystery, but I don't like the discordance of Lap Dog. Tell Somebody is a clap along politcal statement/protest song with a great little organ solo. Sailor Song and A Tree On Allenford are almost throw-aways as far as I'm concerned. It Takes You There is pleasant enough, and Mink Coat at the Bus Stop starts great as a blues tune, but the middle bar slips into some kind of blah lazy arrangement that disrupts the blues flow. The last two songs are not my favorites either. Overall, this is a pretty good CD, with Ugly Man and Little Mystery taking honors for my favorites of the bunch.

A Hidden Jewel of Everlasting Streetlight and Sadness.......2005-05-25

Depth, musical dimension, eyes glistening, often wet with tears and misty demurements, poetry, cool..... and unfortunately almost totally ignored..yes blame the music biz..the vocals are kinda hidden in a sonic mesmerization/jazz like drift, where the cloaked moon is wedded to the waters on the Puget Sound and the ferry boat dreamers drink absinthe...

The song that sounds really wimpy is "Bitchnostrophy" , like an outtake from the 60"s movie, "A Man and a Woman"...However,lyrically this cd is brilliant, and quiet out there..it's arresting and politically in your face..the Patriot Act, the first election of Bush, the folly of our times...irony, pathos, there is nothing funny here... My favorites are Sailor Song and Tree on Allenford... I saw Rickie in concert a year ago when she sang most of these songs...like Dylan, when the light hit her she looked 30, the next time 95....Don't pass this one up...

As she did for the period dramaThe Cider House Rules, English composer Rachel Portman imbues Vance with an American sense of time and place. Bookended by the bluesy jazz of Fats Waller, Mugsy Spanier, and Duke Ellington, Portman's elegant orchestral score is rich in powerful brass and string-driven melody and emotional nuances. Portman once again displays a strong affinity for the plaintive resolve and emotionally longing colors of Aaron Copland's most familiar works, and there are moments here that subtly evoke passages of that composer's Lincoln Portrait. It's a fine irony of modern film that one of Copland's spiritual heirs and most effective practitioners of his essentially male American musical ethos is a soft-spoken Englishwoman. --Jerry McCulley

A soundtrack as wonderful as the movie!.......2005-08-17

When I first saw the picture, the music was one of the two bigger impacts it had on me (cinematography being the other). I had one of those experiences where as soon as the credits were finished I was already planning on purchasing the soundtrack. Problem is the average CD store did not hold it. Lucky for all of us there is Amazon.com!
The music composed by Rachel Portman is nothing short of wonderful! Very American in its orchestration and has often reminded me of the score to JFK (John Williams) & The Natural (Randy Newman/ironically another Redford film). From the scenes where Damon's on the golf course and the camera performs its classic Hitchcock maneuver, to the humorous driving sound as Theron's character takes on the city councilmen, this score proves to be one that must be cherished by all movie music goers.
This is a soundtrack that can inspire people with imagination and heighten the experience of outdoor activities. I myself have played this score while hiking back home and it has performed beautifully. When I play this in my free time it has allowed me to drift away from troubles and distress.
As for the tracks that aren't Portman's composition, they are equally enjoyable. The sound of Muggsy Spanier, Ellington, & Fats Waller are just pure boogie, woogie, oogie know what I mean? Makes you wanna swing.
It's a good soundtrack, one that I am lucky to have in my horde. If you can get it, I highly recommend it.

Why is this soundtrack so hard to find?.......2004-02-18

It goes without saying that a good score can either brilliantly enhance or possibly downright destroy a movie. With the film "The Legend of Bagger Vance" you have a beautiful story accented by beautiful scenery and beautiful period sets and costumes. Anything less than a beautiful score could lessen the appeal and, ultimately, the certain quality that could make this good movie great. Rachel Portman has developed a reputation for making okay movies unforgettable. Any less of a score could have ruined "The Cider House Rules" or even more so "Chocolat". Ms. Portman's score is a perfect example of how image and sound should come together to create something beautiful. In addition to the evocative and nostalgic opening fanfare-like theme, Ms. Portman welds together at least three other prominent themes, as well as a virtual abundance of recurring motifs. But, unlike her recent score CD for "The Human Stain", this album contains a much more varied mix of music that, most times, leaves the listener simply wanting more, but at the same time feeling totally satisfied. Unfortunately, if this review has successfully whet your appetite for this album, all you have to do now is find a copy for a reasonable amount of money. This soundtrack is highly reccommended, but good luck finding it.

Great soundtrack, very relaxing and emotional. Very pleased with the cd music, but disappointed in what I had to pay for it. Also, the seller represented it as NEW and it was not. It had been resealed!

This soundtrack was worthy of an oscar........2002-11-07

When I saw this film I remember thinking, "what an extraordinary soundtrack" and I immediately went out and got the cd. And now a few years later it almost always is in my cd player. I love, love, love soundtracks and this is a homerun to me. I don't remember what the competititon was for the oscars that year but I wish it would have won. I don't even remember if it got a nomination. If you like Randy Newman's work, Aaron Copeland and maybe Hans Zimmer, you will like this cd. She did a really wonderful job. I wish I knew more about the composer.

This is my favorite CD.......2001-11-04

I purchased this CD to find a music selection for my daughter's skating routine. I had previously purchased "Cider House Rules" soundtrack and thoroughly enjoyed it, so we purchased this after listening to the samples on Amazon.com. This soundtrack has to be the best one I have heard! I watched the movie after I had listened to the CD, and I must say that Rachel Portman's music brings the movie to a whole new emotional level. I, too, wonder why this was not nominated for an Oscar. Rachel Portman has that special gift to communicate through her music. I look forward to purchasing more of her works.

Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

If there's a precious tone to Michael Feinstein's interpretations of the American songbook, it probably stems from a fervent dedication to preserving the original context of his material. This is, after all, a musician who spent many of his formative years in personal service to the late Ira Gershwin. This collection further underscores that commitment, with the lush sound of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (augmented by the piano trio of Alan Broadbent, who also provides all but one of the arrangements here) adding considerable dramatic resonance to Feinstein's performances.

While singers from Sinatra and Streisand to Fitzgerald and Bennett have imbued many of these songs with considerable dollops of jazz, blues, and their own strong personas, Feinstein mines melancholy jewels like "Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year," "How Deep Is the Ocean," and "By Myself" for all their introspective emotion. "Somewhere" pays tribute to Bernstein with glorious, unabashed melodrama, while "Laura" (one of the most recorded songs of all time) gets recast in something approaching its original intent via an arrangement written for this recording by composer David Raksin. Feinstein himself penned the album's notes, paying careful tribute to each composer represented and noting that all were Jews, yet their music came to represent a richly American spectrum that included black and white and encompassed jazz, the theater, and even classics in its scope. There's a lesson herein, and one that spans more than mere history and musical archaeology. --Jerry McCulley

Musical Wit in an Orchestral Setting.......2004-01-04

The one problem a record collector encounters when he has an album too many of one artist, is the tendency of the artist to sing the same songs in succeeding albums/settings. Feinstein, who I consider as the leading proponent in reviving the American Popular Song standards to its unfettered glory is backed by a philharmonic orchestra in this album with the musical direction of conductor Alan Broadbent. And yes, he sang some songs that were sung in sparse and acoustic settings in his previous albums. As usual, just like any cabaret singer who never really sings the same song twice (listen to the grand old dames of cabaret like Julie Wilson and Mabel Mercer), Feinstein delights in the varied ways he can see a song in different contexts. Having said that, I thought he was a bit overly cautious in exploring his rich bari-tenor (sorry for this oxymoron but that is the word to apply to his voice) in soaring the vocal lines of Kern's The Folks Who Live on the Hill. Other than that, he was at his wittiest and conversational (not to mention just plain beautiful) voice when singing I Won't Send Roses and he can revisit the Bernstein/Sondheim Somewhere without evoking the famous version of uber diva Barbra Streisand. If you like good crooning vocals in a grand and orchestral setting, this is the album to listen or give as a gift -- you/they won't regret it.

A Cabaret Singer Grows Up.......2003-03-14

Like Coward, Mr. Feinstein seems to understand the power of popular, romantic song when flung into the void of an apparently cold universe by an all too human, understated voice...I first heard Michael Feinstein sing and play the piano umpteen years ago in the mad, bad '80s. At that time, I found his choice of material from the great 20th Century American composers refreshing & interesting, his skills as a pianist were good, and his diction to be above average. Yet his voice at that time was a bit weak--there was too much bravura nonsense, too much vibrato and he may have been too young for some of the songs that he sang at the time.

Well, we've both matured, (I hope), and Mr. Feinstein has delivered a remarkably smooth, yet heartfelt performance on this album. I'm particularly impressed by his vocal smoothness and emotional restraint, especially on "Love is Here to Stay", "How Deep Is the Ocean", "Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year" & "I Won't Send Roses". Mr. Feinstein appears to really understand the depth of feeling that these words and music evoke in him and us. The vibrato is there when needed, but the ripeness of a mature singer is beginning to be heard on his recordings and the Israeli Philharmonic simply gives his singing wings. The only song that doesn't seem to fit is "Stormy Weather"--I kept hearing Lena Horne in my mind's ear, rather than a polished cabaret singer. I hope that Feinstein continues to grow in vocal power and subtlety as he does here. A lovely album for sophisticated romantics.

This cd is about average, it could have been better.......2002-08-18

First I would like to say i'm a Michael fan. I own all his catalog. Even though i'm a fan there are some things about this cd that I find in bad taste. Please let me explain!

I know it is hard to always be creative. There are just so many ideas to go around and then you have to start duplicating others. This is known as copying what others have done.

For this cd I felt like some of the arrangements were too long. For example, Laura as it was performed hear is a six minute song. It really should have been done in two minutes. I'm an engineer and I edited this version of Laura to run two minutes and it is just perfect. Sometimes less is really more. Also, I felt that some of the other songs didn't really have top notch arrangements attached to them. If the arrangements would have been better I whould have had no choice but to bring out the 5 star rating for this project.

To talk a little bit about the voice of Michael is my pleasure. His voice seems to be getting better with age. I have always liked Michael's voice and will continue to do so.

I will give this cd a favorable recommendation!

Feinstein has outdone himself with this collection!! He is in fine fettle with songs that only He can do justice! His interpretations and stylings are beyond compare and trust you will not be disappointed with this recording!! Feinstein is simply fabulously fantastic!

If there is one thing you can say about Michael Feinstein it's that he knows how to put over a song. His new cd is absolutely magnificent, these are the only words to describe it.

Hymns in the Anglican Tradition Beautifully Performed.......2007-01-24

This is one more example of hymns in the Anglican Tradition, sung by the always excellent choir of King's College, Cambridge. It is a splendid example of the sonorous sound of men and boys, accompanied by a classic English organ and, for the quieter hymns, the gentle sound of harp. All the familiar hymns and hymn tunes are here. You will not regret adding this CD to your collection.

Very inspiring music.......2005-07-06

I always enjoy listening to this Cd and particularly because of the orchestra and mellifluous choir. I especially enjoy: A Mighty Fortress, Come Down, O Love Divine, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, and Thine Be The Glory. Some of the selections are soft such as "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears." Still, it is a fabulous selection and one of my favorites.

Great English Hymns.......2005-02-10

This was one of my Christmas gifts and I really looked forward to listening to it. I had just visited King's College, Cambridge back in August and really liked it--you should try to make it out there if possible.

Anyway, this CD was great to listen to. Some hymns are scored for orchestral accompaniment, choir and organ, while the majority of tracks are just for choir and organ.

Recorded in the King's College Chapel (the front cover has a great shot of the ceiling's trademark "fan" stone carving), the hymns are pure English sound--boys' treble voices along with men's changed voices singing with a pure, clean, straight tone. It's very sweet-sounding.

The hymns chosen are also great; "Be Thou My Vision," an Irish classic, appears along with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," and "Morning Has Broken" (later recorded by Cat Stevens).

The singing isn't especially elaborate--they're just simple hymns. They're orchestrated very well, however, and they sound great.

Religious people may prefer these recordings more in general--these are Christian hymns after all--but I think it's a great recording and is worth listening too, especially if you enjoy that English sound!

Buy this CD!.......2004-09-20

Having heard Kings College Choir twice, in the flesh, at Kings, this CD is a wonderful example of what you might hear. If you can't make it to Cambridge, buy this CD. It contains many of the old favorites and also some hymns that are not found on other English hymn CD's.

English Choirs.......2002-12-18

Having visited many Cathedrals throughout the UK and listened to the enchanting voices of the boys choirs, I was disappointed with this particular rendering from Kings. Perhaps I am biased in that I enjoy the organ background or no background but the use of a full blown orchestra, in my opinion, tended to overwhelm and was totally unnecessary and somewhat grandoise choice on the part of Stephen Cleobury. Apart from that, much of the music was excellent. In comparison with other CD's from Kings, this was disappointing.

Ethel Deserved Better Than This.......2001-06-22

There may indeed be no business like show business. RCA was a major backer of this musical, and fully expected to record the original cast album. Decca, Merman's recording label, wouldn't allow her to appear. The solution the two compnaies decided on was an original cast album on RCA featuring Dinah Shore doing Merman's numbers, and this mediocre studio album.

Decca was never a winner when it came to modern recording techniques. Merman's voice has no echo or reverb to enhance her performance. The arrangements are by Gordon Jenkins, which fit Ethel's style like it was a dress bought in a bargain basement. It is a shame that in the later years of her life, Ethel didn't choose to revisit this score and re-record it, as she did with Annie Get Your Gun twice.

Some Enchanted Evening is enchanting!.......2002-07-26

This album takes you on a stroll down memory lane, enchanting all the way. It is relaxing and soothing listening, and will be great background music for a candlelit dinner for two, an evening party with a mix of ages and backgrounds, or just to sing with while you get some work done. The orchestration is excellent and the performances wonderfully smooth. A hit for everyone!
