About the Artist
The first time you see Get Back Loretta perform live you get the sense that you might be witnessing something profoundly important in the progression of rock music. Best described as an amalgam of Radiohead, Ben Folds Five, Hot Hot Heat, and the Beatles, this San Diego band's unpretentious nature is evident in a cutting edge sound that is both upbeat and refreshingly soulful. After just a year as a group, Get Back Loretta's engaging stage presence, prolific songwriting abilities, unique personalities, and powerful vocals have already begun to attract the attention of industry insiders. They have made an appearance on FoX RoX (Fox's underground music show), discussed their future goals on the local FM 94/9 Sunday interview with Anya Marina, and rocked the Troubadour with indie giant Circa Survive. In a recent review of the Get Back Loretta EP in the magazine San Diego CityBeat, Troy Johnson wrote, "I thought I had discovered the best unknown band in San Diego
Best out-of-nowhere goodness I've heard
" While we tend to agree with his assessment, the current success the band enjoys has its concrete genesis in the prior experiences of its members.
Formed in September 2004, Get Back Loretta is comprised of Steven Bradford (lead vocals/acoustic guitar/bass,) Kevin Martin (piano, vocals,) Isaac Cass (drums,) Ben Johnston (rhythm guitar,) and Dalton Harmon (lead guitar). Steven Bradford, cousin of Rancid's Lars Frederickson, always knew that he wanted to be a musician and a star in his own right. After a successful stint with Waiting for Autumn - a band that received an all-important nod from the Alternative Press just weeks before it broke up due to creative differences - Steven decided it was time to get out of the screamo scene. What he really wanted was to revitalize the music of the great bands of the 60s and 70s. For the task, Bradford commissioned long time friend Ben Johnston to play the role of tasteful guitar-smith. In search of a tight drummer, Steven enlisted Isaac Cass, whom he had met during a tour with Underoath. Isaac's youthful charm and expert drum chops would be instrumental to the band's aura. Still needing more core members, Steven called upon his talented friend Kevin Martin from Jack the Original. They quickly connected as a songwriting duo and the four began to collaborate. They were very pleased with their findings, but there was still an element missing. Kevin immediately thought of his long time friend Dalton Harmon, who had been exposed early on to the musical stylings of Jimi Hendrix, BB King, John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters. He began to play during one of their rehearsals, and nearly blew the rest of the band out of the water with his piercing blues licks and diamond in the rough talent. The band unanimously voted that Dalton join the band and Get Back Loretta was now complete.
The band's desire to be heard was evident from the very beginning. Two weeks after coming together in front of a sizable crowd at the Epicentre, GBL brought the house down. The band earned instant respect and admiration from its new fans for playing great music with a panache that proved they truly believed in what they were doing. With the release of its self-titled EP in 2005, the band is looking to expand on its growing fanbase. Great reviews from the press, airplay on local alternative stations 91X and 94/9, and brisk sales in San Diego music stores certainly have not hurt. While public recognition threatens to rob many new bands of their commitment to great music, Get Back Loretta is determined to keep its focus on the quality and innovation of its particular style. It is the down-to-earth sincerity of this homegrown success that keeps it charging ahead.
Product Description
Get Back Loretta's first release is a 6 song EP that showcases the diversity of the band's musical influences. "Ninety Five" may be one of the band's best songs to date. The acoustic rendition of "Pretty Song" is frequently cited as an example of GBL's ability to write a good song. While their first release may not truly capture the band's live sound, it certainly portends great things for the future.
